Recycling made easy. How to do it, where it all goes, garden waste calendar and useful tips‌

Recycling is easy!

Recycling in Bath and North East Somerset is easy when you follow these simple steps: 1 Recycle as much as you can using your weekly collections • Food bin for food waste recycling • Green box for recycling • Blue bag for cardboard recycling 2 Compost as much as you can at home or use our fortnightly garden waste collection service (for a charge). 3 Book a bulky waste collection for larger unwanted things such as furniture, or take them to one of our three Recycling Centres. Even better still, reduce what you throw away and reuse things if you can, before recycling (see back cover).

Recycling is easy!

Why recycle?

2

• As waste rots in landfill sites, it produces greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. • It is becoming increasingly expensive to send our waste to landfill so we can save money by recycling. • It saves the amount of raw materials (such as trees and oil), energy and water used to make things from new. Last year we recycled 52% of your waste in Bath and North East Somerset but we can recycle lots more!

Find out your collection day at our homepage www.bathnes.gov.uk and enter your postcode or street name.

Food bin Food waste recycling

You can recycle all your cooked and uncooked food waste every week using your kitchen caddy and outside food waste bin. Your food waste will be composted and used on agricultural land.

• Plastic including food wrapping and bags (even if made from degradable plastic). Please put these in your rubbish • Cardboard (please put in your blue bag for recycling instead) • Liquids and cooking oils

Advice on using your food bin • Line your kitchen caddy with a compostable liner or newspaper.

• Empty your caddy into your food waste bin before it gets too full, and rinse these bins regularly to keep them clean. (Loose food gets stuck so we can’t always empty your bin completely). • Make sure you keep your food waste bin locked by pulling the handle forward so it is secure from animals and birds.

Compostable liners Only use compostable liners with the seedling logo. See a list of local stockists at www.bathnes.gov.uk/foodwaste or contact Council Connect.

Confused about plastic? We’ve had feedback from residents who are confused about plastic recycling so please see the list below to check what we can and cannot currently collect. To save space on our vehicles please empty, wash, squash and then put the lids back on plastic bottles. When grouping materials in your green box, it is fine to mix cans and plastic together as they are separated by machine at our depot.

Collection of larger items (bulky waste)

We can collect larger household items such as furniture and fridges from the outside of your house but there is a charge for this. There is a discounted rate for those on certain benefits. Prices are on our website or contact Council Connect. You could also try getting rid of things for free to charities or on reuse websites such as www.freecycle.org

Rubbish • Use this collection only for items you can’t recycle. • Use black sacks or carrier bags (tied) or a conventional dustbin.

Please • Don’t overfill your sacks so we can lift them without splitting. • Wrap anything sharp like broken glass first, in plenty of newspaper to keep our crews safe.

How to put your recycling and rubbish out for collection • We collect your recycling and rubbish on the same day of the week but with different vehicles. • All collections are weekly except garden waste which is fortnightly. • Please put your containers out by 7am on your collection day (or after 8.30pm the night before) at the front edge of your property, where they can be easily seen by our crews. • Please remove containers from the kerbside on the day they are emptied. • We collect as normal on all bank holidays except over Christmas and New Year. • You can be fined for leaving your rubbish and / or recycling out at the wrong time or place. If you need help putting out your recycling and rubbish, please contact us to find out about assisted collections.
