In this issue
Welcome to Bath Spa University, and this very special edition of SPACE magazine, which has been written with you – our new students – in mind, to give you a flavour of all the exciting things that happen here. Bath Spa is a unique university, and I’m delighted that you have decided to join our community. We are here to help you grow your skills, capabilities and talents so you can make it in whatever area you choose. Creativity is at the heart of what we do here, but that isn’t just about putting on a performance or staging an art exhibition (although that is part of it). We encourage you all to be creative and enterprising, becoming imaginative problem solvers and innovators. We want to help you to be curious, to question, and to develop the skills to thrive in this rapidly changing world. I hope that you quickly feel at home here. We place great importance in fostering a sense of belonging amongst our students, creating a community within our stunning surroundings. There are a variety of ways you can get involved in University life alongside your course, and I encourage you all to visit the Students’ Union and find out about all they offer – from the Baking to Big Band societies, and Rugby to Rowing clubs (and a whole host of other things in between!), I’m sure you’ll find something that interests you. I’d also urge you all to explore your new city. One of the world’s most beautiful cities, Bath is a UNESCO listed site, with Roman and Georgian heritage, but it is also a vibrant, forward-looking place, renowned for being a hotbed of inventors, entrepreneurs, artisans and independent thinkers. This is a university like no other, and I very much look forward to seeing you thrive here over the coming years.

Bath in an afternoon There are plenty of places for you to discover in the beautiful city of Bath. Got a free afternoon to explore your surroundings? Here are a few of our favourite ways to while away the hours in this truly unique UNESCO Word Heritage Site. Make yourself at home! 1pm – Royal Crescent First stop - Royal Crescent, just grab a picnic and go! This world-famous landmark is made up of a row of 30 Grade I listed terraced houses arranged around a perfect lawn overlooking Royal Victoria Park. It’s among the greatest examples of Georgian architecture to be found in the United Kingdom – but don’t just take our word for it, see it for yourself!
2pm – Pulteney Bridge Head on over to Pulteney Bridge – a striking, sweeping horseshoe-shaped weir. Fun fact: This famous location features in a pivotal scene in Les Misérables! It’s one of the world’s most historic bridges and even has shops built into it. We think it looks incredible when viewed from Parade Gardens but why not go and find your favourite side. 3pm – Bath Abbey There’s nothing quite like a walk around Bath Abbey. Soaking up the special atmosphere and history of this iconic landmark is a must. Here, you’ll find war memorials dedicated to locals, monuments of notable people in the form of wall and floor plaques, and
commemorative stained glass. Breathtaking. 4pm – SouthGate Is there a better way to round off your afternoon than with a spot of retail therapy? You couldn’t come to Bath without paying a visit to SouthGate – a lively shopping centre that combines Georgian style buildings with modern shops, not to mention plenty of restaurants to quench your thirst and feed your appetite.

A word from Ryan Lucas, Students’ Union President
The Student Community Partnership The Student Community Partnership (or SCP) is a bridge between the University of Bath and its Students’ Union, Bath Spa University and its Students’ Union and Bath and North East Somerset Council. It supports student residents and permanent residents in coming together and living in the community of Bath. The SCP campaigns for neighbourly relations, safety, sustainability and other aspects of community awareness. Keep an eye out throughout the year for updates on the campaigns the SCP runs – like #NeverOK and Pack for Good – and how you can get involved.

We caught up with Ryan Lucas, Students’ Union (SU) President, to find out more about his role at the University and how he can help you. Ryan was first elected President in March 2017, he was then re-elected for a second year earlier this year. His main role at the University is to connect students and staff, ensuring that your student voices are heard. Ryan studied Religion, Philosophies and Ethics and took part in many extracurricular activities during his time as a Bath Spa student. He was Course Rep for three years, as well as Housing Rep and a Fresher’s Buddy. Ryan also worked in the SU shop between lectures! His willingness to get stuck in to life at Bath Spa University has given him an insight into the student experience as a whole, not just the academic side of student life. Words of wisdom We asked Ryan to tell us more about his Bath Spa journey and asked whether he has any words of wisdom for you, our new students. Here’s what he had to say! “Day-to-day my main job is to represent all Bath Spa students. Whether that’s Newton Park, Sion Hill, and everywhere in between, it’s down to me to make sure every student is being listened to and that the student experience is as good as it can be. “I never wanted to go to university, never saw the appeal of it. I came to Bath Spa for 10 minutes, spoke to one of the lecturers on my course and decided that
this was the place I wanted to come to. The course was one of the best things I’ve ever done, my lecturers allowed me to do everything I wanted to do. I had a placement too which meant I got to go to Glastonbury for a week and hang out with some really cool people which was amazing. “I never wanted to go to a city campus. For me, Bath Spa, being in the city but on the outskirts means you get the best of both worlds. Bath Spa is a community which means every student has the opportunity to get involved – whether that’s bonding with your housemates, joining up to a club or society and more, there are so many different platforms that you can get involved with to make sure you feel like part of the Bath Spa community. “The other thing to remember is that any struggle you have, there will always be someone to turn to. That’s the kind of experience you get at Bath Spa. It gives you that thing that no other university can give you. You’re not just a number on a piece of paper, you’re an individual. You matter. You count. Everyone wants to make sure you find what you want from university, it’s your opportunity to build your own story. These are some of the best years of your life and Bath Spa staff, fellow students, the SU, we all want to make sure you have the best experience. I’m very proud to have studied at Bath Spa and being President is just an added bonus!”

Local schools take part in The Great Science Share Students from twenty schools across the South West joined the third-annual Great Science Share hosted at Bath Spa University, an event which celebrates children’s science questions and investigations. The event, held at the University’s Newton Park campus in June, saw 100 pupils take part in an exciting STEM challenge - which included making gliders, steady hand games and filters for dirty water – and a table top science fair, where they had the chance to present science investigations they’ve carried out in their classrooms. The investigations included making marble runs, catapults, scribble bots, hovercrafts, testing the strength of eggs and Formula 1 margarine tubs. The Bath Spa Great Science Share is part of a national campaign, led by Manchester University in collaboration with BBC Terrific Scientific, which aims to inspire young people from across the UK and overseas to share their science learning with new audiences. The event also provided a platform to share outcomes from two Bath Spa research

projects: Teacher Assessment in Primary Science (TAPS) and Thinking Doing Talking Science. The TAPS project has worked with 60 schools across England, Wales and Northern Ireland over the past five years to develop resources that support teachers in teaching and assessing practical primary science – there have been 68,0000 downloads of the pyramid-shaped school self-evaluation tool so far. The Thinking Doing Talking Science project is a randomised control trial looking at the impact of developing higher order thinking skills. Sarah Earle, Senior Lecturer in Primary PGCE Science and TAPS project lead, said: “This is the first time Bath Spa University has been involved in the Great Science Share and it’s already proved a huge success. Not only has it given students the opportunity to demonstrate their own science investigations, but it has sparked curiosity and intrigue amongst them – which we hope will inspire them to pursue a career in the sciences.”
Former student rocks out with Foo Fighters Former Bath Spa Commercial Music student Jed Elliott recently appeared on stage stateside with his four-piece Brit rock band, The Struts, who supported the Foo Fighters with their latest string of US shows. Having already performed with The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses and The Who, The Struts were personally picked by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl after he saw them entertain crowds in his hometown of Washington, DC. The Foo Fighters played an instrumental role in The Struts’ musical evolution, they even covered the American band’s hits in their early years. When asked how he felt about supporting the Foo Fighters, Jed said: “It was an honour to be invited by Mr Dave Grohl.” Discussing the journey he took to reach this milestone, Jed continued: “I have a lot to thank the Commercial Music course for! After studying at Bath Spa University I had the opportunity to

join The Struts. We signed with Virgin EMI and toured extensively across the UK and France for a few years, leading to a support show with The Rolling Stones in Paris. This attracted the attention of management based in America and in 2015 we signed with Interscope Records and relocated to Los Angeles. “I feel that the course inspired me to improve as a musician but also equipped me with the skills to form relationships in the music industry, based on an understanding of the roles involved. I was able to have a solid idea of how to treat my band as a product, without inhibiting the creativity, and this proved invaluable when it came to management and record label discussions. I also developed production skills, became much more confident as a performer and fell even more in love with music.”
Original works of stunning art and design were on show this summer as our Sion Hill campus opened its doors to the public to celebrate the annual Bath School of Art and Design Undergraduate Degree Show. The work of graduating students was displayed across the campus for the nine-day exhibition. Selected items, designed and developed by those from the Contemporary Arts Practice, Creative Arts; Fashion Design, Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Photography, Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors, Three Dimensional Design, and Fashion and Textiles Design Skills courses were on display for all to enjoy. Professor Anita Taylor, Executive Dean of Bath School of Art and Design said: “The exhibition celebrated the many excellent and diverse creative accomplishments of our undergraduate students in art and design. The event provided a public platform to celebrate the significant achievements of this highly
talented group of emerging artists and designers. “The Degree Shows are a wonderful showcase for the talent, skills and creativity of each graduating student, who have worked hard to evolve and to realise their ideas through creative practice, and have formed firm foundations for their future careers or further study during their time at the University.” Final year Bath Spa University Fine Art student William Hughes exhibited five pieces of work at the Show. He added: “I chose to study at Bath Spa University because of the amazing range of facilities that are available including those for woodwork, metalwork and sculpture, which are all integral to my practice. Studying Fine Art has really allowed me to express myself through my work which I have found to be very therapeutic. Meeting people who are as creative and driven as me has been a particular highlight of my experience.”

70th year of The Bath Festival
Record number of Bath Spa University graduates in work or further study New figures show that a record 96.1% of Bath Spa University graduates* are in work or further study six months after graduating. This is an increase from 93.9% in the previous year and secures the University a place in the top 50 UK higher education institutions for graduate outcomes. The Higher Education Statistics Authority’s (HESA) yearly results, based on the ‘Destination of Leavers from Higher Education’ survey, rank Bath Spa in its highest position to date at number 41 in a list of the UK’s 152 higher education institutions. The results place the University 1.5% ahead of the sector average, and 1.1% ahead of its own HESA predicted performance indicator. Employability is embedded into every course at the University and we strive to be a leading educational institution in creativity, culture and enterprise. Our Careers Team offer a wide range of extracurricular skills-boosting opportunities to students including 50 free workshops each term and an online MyCareer advice portal. Working on a one-to-one basis, the Team supports students to build their confidence and knowledge, whatever their destination after graduating. Barrie Grey, Head of Careers and Employability at Bath Spa University said: “These figures highlight the ongoing

commitment we give to our students’ career journeys and the value that we have added to enhance the overall student experience. We are committed to ensuring our students graduate as engaged global citizens who are ready for the world of work. “From choosing a career, through to skills development, help with applications, interviews and finding jobs, or looking at postgraduate study, we help Bath Spa University students explore all possible options and follow their dreams – the opportunities are limitless.” All students have access to the University’s careers service which offers advice including how to make their CVs stand out, get the most out of LinkedIn and prepare for tasks such as those faced in assessment centres. Through their University experience, many Bath Spa students undertake placements, with a number having gained valuable work experience with international businesses such as Warner Brothers, Porsche, Intel, and establishments connected to their courses including local schools, art galleries, fashion houses and more. *Graduate cohort = UK domicile, full-time students studying for an undergraduate degree
More than 100 Bath Spa University students and staff played an essential part in delivering the 70th anniversary of The Bath Festival to a recordbreaking crowd of over 37,000 people. Across 17 days and 18 different shows, talented students from courses including BA (Hons) Commercial Music, BA (Hons) Music, BA (Hons) Film, TV and Digital Production, MA Arts Management, and BA (Hons) Business and Management (Festivals and Events), showcased what it means to be part of the Bath Spa community at this year’s multi-arts festival. As well as those who lent a helping hand on stage and behind-the-scenes, students from the University’s Film and TV, Creative Writing and Music and Performance courses joined together to create their first professional, industrystandard p romotional music video; Manifesto. From filming to singing, the theme of collaboration was key as the Bath Spa University Choir, formed by students from the music department, put on a show-stopping performance in Bath Abbey as part of the festival’s Party in the City. The Choir, led by Music Director Francis Faux, performed composer Thomas Hewitt Jones’ choral piece, Oculi Omnium. Hewitt Jones shared the performance on his official Facebook page saying it was a ‘lovely, vibrant choral sound...a gorgeous rendition’. Bath Spa University Music student and chorister, EmilyMay Eccles, also sang an excerpt of Grammy Awardwinner Christopher Tin’s, Calling All Dawns. Professor Andy Salmon, Executive Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at
Success at Spa
Bath Spa University, said: “This event represents an exciting intensification of the partnership between Bath Spa University and The Bath Festival, and the energy that has gone into making this year such a huge success is evident. “The performances, collaborations and hard work from students and staff really highlights the University’s manifesto for creativity and showcases the incredible talent that exists in this city. Everyone should be very proud of what they have achieved - the tone for next year’s Bath Festival has surely been set.” Throughout the fun-filled Festival, Bath Spa University students and staff welcomed a number of performers on stage. Bath Spa University ViceChancellor Professor Sue Rigby introduced acclaimed novelist Roddy Doyle and Students’ Union President Ryan Lucas introduced comedian and writer Robert Webb. Bath Spa University students also hosted Bath Introduces – an exciting opportunity for musicians and singersongwriters to enter a competition to play on the main stage at the Bath Rec as part of the Finale Weekend. In fact, some of our very own Commercial Music students made it to the final! Many of the University’s talented graduates also took part in Festival celebrations through SparkFest - an innovative programme of live theatre, music and dance which presented a fresh take on how young talent engages with the Bath community. With a jampacked series of events it was certainly a 70th celebration to remember!
Music student’s award-winning composition to be made into metal work of art Final year Bath Spa University BA Music student, Jake Garratt, has won a National Heritage Ironwork Group (NHIG) competition to have his original piece of classical music immortalised in the City as an iron bandstand. The volunteer-run NHIG approached Bath Spa University Music students to work on this exclusive collaboration. Jake’s composition entitled ‘The Hammer and Anvil’ has been selected to be brought to life as part of the charity’s £20,000 crowdfunded bandstand appeal. Each of the musical notes, keys and staves from his score will now be hand-forged into a new iron balustrade for Bath’s Parade Gardens. Local blacksmiths from Iron Art of Bath have started working on the installation, and treble clefs - which can be sponsored for £50 - were recently on display at a ‘forge in’ at the Upper Lambridge Street workshop during the 10th annual Larkhall Festival. Jake said: “I entered the competition because I thought it would be a fun project to work on. Composition is one of the areas I major in, and hope to have a career in, so it was great experience for me. “The brief required a short piece made of 14 bars and I felt I had time to
write that alongside my studies. I also needed to incorporate either a Bath, heritage, music or iron reference. My piece is inspired by an English folk melody about a blacksmith, so I opted for the music and iron connections. “I’m very pleased to have won the competition and it makes me feel happy to know my piece will be adorning the sides of a bandstand that will be erected in the Parade Gardens.” You can listen to Jake’s composition by visiting his SoundCloud. If you would like to make a donation towards the balustrade please visit the National Heritage Ironwork Group Localgiving page. Summer 2018 | SPACE | 13
Fashion forward: Designers of the future raise funds to host Bath Graduate Fashion Show Hot on the heels of appearing at London’s Graduate Fashion Week, earlier this summer Bath Spa University’s BA (Hons) Fashion Design graduates hosted their self-funded Bath Graduate Fashion Show comprised of final year collections, as well as projects from first and second year students. Held at the city’s 18th century Assembly Rooms, the Bath Graduate Fashion Show saw final year Fashion Design students rallying together to fundraise £8,000, which included donations made via the University’s crowd funding hub, Launch Pad. This was then
added to contributions made by first and second year students, bringing the total amount to £21,000. Graduating students also successfully applied for monetary support from the University’s Enterprise Showcase Fund which matches any funding already raised. All of this enabled the talented team to showcase their handiwork to an audience of fellow University students, staff, savvy fashionistas, local businesses, friends and family. Graduates’ work was exhibited on the catwalk by professional runway models (shown below). Louise Pickles, Course Leader of
Fashion at Bath Spa University, added: “This year’s collections have been more diverse than ever. Our students continue to push the boundaries of fashion by creating personal and innovative collections while maintaining highly professional product realisation. Thank you to all those who made this year’s event one to remember and well done to our next generation of talented fashion designers. Everyone should be very proud of what they have achieved, and we look forward to following their next steps into the fashion industry.”
Charlotte Weaver Charlotte’s collection was inspired by the BBC’s Blue Planet II series; her bold and brightly-coloured collection was designed in response to the pollution of the oceans and subsequent bleaching of coral. Charlotte is also one of just 10 finalists in a British Fashion Council and Stradivarius competition, the winner of which will be announced later this year. She has also been shortlisted for a design position at high street fashion retailer, River Island.
Jack Capstick Jack’s collection is inspired by the story of Cynthia Payne’s brothel that she ran from her south London home in the 1970’s. Jack’s modern reimagining of her story resulted in a collection that combines latex with sophisticated tailored menswear. Jack has also been announced as a finalist in a design competition for clothing brand Desigual, headquartered in Barcelona.
Jessica Purdie Jessica grew up on a farm in Perthshire and united her love for fashion and farming by turning feedbags into tops, skirts and dresses. Jessica gained permission from Harbro to use their original feedbag graphics and incorporated the checks, cows and sheep in her designs which were then embellished with thousands of rhinestones.

Hats off to Bath’s Children’s University graduates More than 60 local primary school children took part in their very first graduation ceremony this summer at Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus as part of a joint initiative with the Children’s University. National charity, Children’s University, works with Bath Spa University to encourage local children in Bath and North East Somerset to learn new skills and take part in enriching experiences outside of the classroom. Now in its second year, the collaboration between Bath Spa University and Weston All Saints Primary School (WASPS) saw pupils in Years 4-6 receive certificates in recognition of what they had achieved through the partnership over the last 18 months. Activities have included taking
part in Bath Spa University-led projects such as a Paper Nations writing scheme and an interactive quest for fun and facts held at the Roman Baths. This year, almost double the amount of children pulled on their gowns and caps to graduate, compared to the previous year. Visitors including parents, carers and teachers joined the children to witness the proud moment and Professor Kate Reynolds, Executive Dean of Bath Spa University’s Institute for Education, began the afternoon’s celebrations with an inspiring welcome speech. Professor Kate Reynolds said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the children and all WASPS visitors to Bath Spa University for our 2018 Children’s University Graduation Ceremony. Some of our young graduates managed to gain both Bronze and Silver
Awards in one year which really is testament to their love of learning, and demonstrates what can be achieved through fun and engaging activities outside the classroom. We look forward to welcoming many more young graduates to Bath Spa University as our Children’s University partnership grows along with their imagination.” Executive Headteacher at WASPS, Dr Anne Bull OBE, also shared the children’s accomplishments with the audience during the ceremony and Professor Stephen Ward, previous Dean of Education at Bath Spa University who has a long-standing association with the School, presented the children with their certificates.

Local Businesses join Bath Spa University to celebrate new Technology Network launch On Tuesday 12 June, local businesses, researchers and investors turned out to celebrate the inaugural launch of the South West Creative Technology Network (SWCTN), hosted by lead project partners Bath Spa University, University of the West of England (UWE) and Kaleider. The event, held during Creative Bath festivities in Queen Square in the centre of the city, saw Professor Kate Pullinger, Director of the Centre for Culture and Creative Industries at Bath Spa University, Jon Dovey, Professor of Screen Media at UWE, and Katie Keeler, Executive Producer at Kaleider, take to the stage to share insight into the exciting opportunities offered by the new £6.4m Government-backed three-year initiative to boost the South West’s creative technology sector. Local businesses including Visit Bath, Future Joinery Systems and Royds Withy King Solicitors, gained first-hand information about how the project could help them work collaboratively with universities and other South West 16 | SPACE | Summer 2018
organisations, to build better links with communities, and transform the way people engage with digital technology. Bath Spa University’s Kate Pullinger said: “It was fantastic to launch the South West Creative Technology Network to a local audience made up of businesses of all sizes. We are very much looking forward to bringing great minds from the South West creative industries, organisations and higher education together, to capture imaginations and develop new ways for those in the region and further afield to interact with technology.”
Funding comes via Research England’s Government-funded Connecting Capability Fund (CCF). The South West project is one of just 18 selected for support from across England, and the only one which includes a focus on the creative industries. £4.6m has been awarded to the networking project from the CCF, with universities and other partners contributing an additional £1.8m. The three-year project will focus on joint research, seed funding for new business ideas, consultancy and training, the creation of new companies and social enterprises, and public and community engagement.

Bath Spa’s Tim Vyner captures Street Child World Cup Tim Vyner, renowned British illustrator and Senior Lecturer in Illustration at Bath Spa University, stunningly captured the Street Child World Cup: The Future Depends On You in Moscow ahead of this year’s FIFA World Cup using a series of reportage illustrations – a visual journalism technique which records events by hand and in real time. Tim was commissioned by the UK charity, Street Child United, to digitally document this year’s tournament. The event saw more than 200 streetconnected children from across the globe take part in their own international football tournament, festival of arts and congress for their rights. The reportage illustrations, which are drawn on an iPad then animated with recorded audio to capture the essence of that exact moment in time, tell the stories of young boys and girls, representing 24 national teams, playing to change the negative perceptions and treatment of
street-connected children across the world. Off the pitch, the young people will make their voices heard, calling for the rights of millions of children surviving on the streets worldwide.
The artwork created from the Street Child United World Cup helped tell some of the amazing stories that unfolded at the event, including the opening and closing ceremonies, which saw Brazilian footballer Gilberto Silva take part in Q&As with each team, expressive drumming workshops and the Late Shows, a series of on stage evening performances,
choreographed by team members which highlighted the culture of their country in the form of music, dance or drama. Tim said: “Visual journalism is an exciting way to capture the passion, atmosphere and participation that has coursed its way through this fantastic event, and I’m thrilled that the illustrations have turned out so well. The Street Child United World Cup was incredibly vibrant from start to finish and it was fantastic to see sport and art changing the lives of so many people. “As our world grows increasingly fast-paced, it can be hard to find the time to stop, observe and record the changes happening around us. People consume news in real time, so the power of reportage illustration is in the immediacy of the images that are created and the feeling of the illustrator’s presence on location.”

Bath Spa University Manifesto
Multi Oscar-winner awards bursaries to Bath Spa University students Oscar-winning film producer, Lord David Puttnam, has awarded three Bath Spa University students a bursary under the new Puttnam Scholars’ scheme. The three undergraduate Film, TV and Digital Production students – James Hood, Michaela King and Ross Carr - will each receive a share of the £3500 prize, having impressed Lord Puttnam and the judging panel with their commitment to the course, their creativity, initiative and passion for film. The students will use the bursaries to help kick-start their careers in the creative industries, helping them establish themselves in the transition between graduation and employment. Lord Puttnam, a film producer who is passionate about education, has long believed that inspirational teaching, which harnesses young people’s creativity, intelligence and ambition, is the key to a more secure and imaginative future. He has been delivering lectures to Bath Spa students for three years, using his experience in film, education and politics to help 18 | SPACE | Summer 2018
shape the next generation of leaders in the creative industries. Launching the Puttnam Scholars’ scheme, he said: “I have been enormously impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment to learning that I’ve witnessed in a number of the students here at Bath Spa. I believe that outstanding commitment to creativity should be identified and encouraged, and I hope this bursary scheme will make a very real difference to the three students to whom, in recognition of their commitment, we’re making the award.” “Through the Studios we develop talent in collaboration with industry. We want to ensure that, throughout their studies, our students are given additional opportunities with and insight into the industry they want to work in. Lord Puttnam’s insightful and thoughtprovoking lectures have been a highlight of the year for staff and students,” added Dr Susan McMillan, Head of Film, Writing and Digital Production at Bath Spa.
Students from the University’s Film and TV, Creative Writing and Music and Performance courses recently joined together to create their first professional, industry-standard promotional music video; Manifesto. The film made its public debut when it aired on giant screens during The Bath Festival Grand Finale earlier this summer which saw acts including Paloma Faith, Alison Moyet, Robert Plant and Midge Ure take to the main stage. Manifesto features students from courses including Acting, Dance and Psychology, putting their own unique twist on original lyrics penned and recited by MA Creative Writing student, Danny Pandolfi. Danny, who is also a hip hop poet, was named as one of Rife Magazine’s most influential young Bristolians in 2017. The music for the film, which encapsulates the spirit of Bath Spa University, was composed by Silas Chandler, a current MA Composition student and BA Commercial Music graduate. The film was creatively produced and directed by the BAFTA Award winning creative team at Burrell, Durrent and Hifle (BDH) in partnership with the crew of Bath Spa University students. BDH, whose previous work includes producing music videos for Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams, gave students real insight into the inner-workings of creating a high-end production. Dr Susan McMillan who oversees the creative industries programme at Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus said: “At Bath Spa Studios we are now developing talent in collaboration with industry and this film really captures what we mean by creative – it was written by students, composed by students, performed by students and made by students working with one of the most successful creative companies in the region.” Check out the Manifesto video on the Bath Spa YouTube channel.

Students sing to win as The Voice UK comes to Bath Spa University Six Bath Spa students sang their hearts out at a University open mic night earlier this year to impress an audience of talent scouts from hit TV show, The Voice UK. The search for next year’s stars was held at Bath Spa University’s Michael Tippett Centre - home to a hive of music teaching activity and Bath’s only purpose-built concert hall. The vocalists took it in turns to belt out their chosen tracks in front of professionals from the singing show’s talent-spotting team. Each of the budding entertainers shares the same dream of being picked to audition live in front of a panel of celebrity coaches for the show’s upcoming eighth series.
The singers Suzanne Renaud-Betz Suzanne, 20, who is in her second year of studying for a BA in Commercial Music gave her own unique rendition of the Pokémon Theme. She said: “As part of my course we were challenged to change the genre of a song and I wanted to do something nobody else would. When I knew the talent scouts were going to be at the University I took it as a sign to take a leap of faith and make the most of the experience. I’m happy I did!” Ellie Martin Second year BA Drama student Ellie, 19, who performed a classic from Andrew Lloyd Webber hit stage musical, The Phantom of the Opera, said: “I made a new year’s resolution to say yes to every opportunity that came my way, so when I heard The Voice UK talent scouts were coming to University I just knew I had to be there.”
Rebecca Rees Third year BA Drama student Rebecca, 19, who sang the Queen classic Somebody To Love said: “I love to sing for fun but hadn’t really started thinking about it as a profession until I came to University. I’ve always enjoyed watching The Voice UK with my family and the possibility of appearing on the show really excites me.”
Eve Mortimer Eve, 21, has since graduated with a BA in Creative Art and Drama. She performed Riptide by Vance Joy and said: “I’ve been singing for a few years and enjoy participating in musical theatre through the University. I made a deal with my mum that I’d attend the open mic night and give it my all and I’m really glad I took part.”
Lauren Masterson Third year BSc Psychology student Lauren, 24, who sang You Were Meant for Me by American singer-songwriter Jewel, said: “I’ve always liked singing but I’ve never performed in public until now so this was nerve-wracking but fun. Studying at Bath Spa has opened my eyes to the possibility of making a career out of singing. This kind of thing doesn’t happen every day.”
Jasmine NesbittLarking Jasmine, 20, who also goes by the apt nickname ‘Jazz’ is in her final year of studying for a BA in Jazz Music. She sang famous gospel song Roll, Jordan, Roll and said: “I’m a keen vocalist and also enjoy teaching jazz music. I’ve made what was arguably one of the best decisions of my life which was to study jazz music at Bath Spa.” Summer 2018 | SPACE | 19
Our Development and Alumni Relations Team raised more than £550 at this year’s summer graduation ceremonies with their new #BathSpaGives donor pin badges. The badges symbolise all things Bath Spa University and feature Newton Park’s famous lakeloving swan, a lion which is modelled on those that can be found sitting proudly at the front of our Sion Hill campus, and Corsham Court’s peacock, complete with its patterned plumage.
Did you know? It’s been four years since the official opening of Commons at Newton Park campus. In summer 2014, the building was opened with a highlyanticipated unveiling of the University’s seven-metre high MediaWall - a space for staff and students to collaborate and experiment with large-scale digital media. Find out more on Twitter: @MediaWallBSU.
During this year’s summer graduation ceremonies, Emmy, Golden Globe, Tony, Academy and Oscar award-winning actor and Bath Spa University Chancellor, Jeremy Irons, accompanied by his pet dog Smudge, made a rousing speech in which he said: “Some say the arts are the icing on the Christmas cake of life: they are wrong. The arts are the brandy that infuses the cake and enriches the other ingredients.”

The Year in Pictures Inspired by a Charles Dickens’ classic, last winter, a team of 47 students from Bath Spa University’s BA Acting, BA Theatre Production and MA Creative Producing course brought Christmas cheer to the streets of Bath as they entertained locals with their rendition of A Christmas Carol.
From sheep shearing to the small screen! Bath Spa University MA Design: Fashion and Textiles student and full-time shepherdess Katie Allen took to the small screen earlier this year as she and her British woollen textiles company, Loopy Ewes, featured on BBC 2 show, Back to the Land with Kate Humble.
Hundreds of prospective teachers and their families came along to Newton Park earlier this year for our first ever Teacher Training Taster Day. Alongside talks addressing the big question “why teach?”, there were chances to make music, solve a murder mystery, teach a classroom of avatar children in a virtual classroom, meet two robots named Nao and Pepper, and much more!

Gumdrop: A smarter way to chew No, you’re not imagining those pink spheres dotted around our campuses, they are in fact Gumdrop points! What’s that we hear you say? Well, we’re glad you asked. Gumdrop points were introduced to all of our campuses in 2015 as a new way for students, staff and all chewing gum lovers to bin their bubble gum in an environmentally-friendly way that would also help to improve our waste and recycling system. You’ll find the eye-catching Gumdrop points attached to lots of our outdoor bins and at eye level on key routes around our campuses, such as outside our famous Michael Tippett Centre at Newton Park Campus. Once you’ve dropped your gum into the special containers, it’s then collected and recycled into a mouldable polymer known as ‘Gum-tec’. From here, it can then be made into frisbees, sports cones, wellington boots and more! So now you know, you can ditch your gum the smarter and more sustainable way.

Refill: A refreshing way to hydrate Great news! New mains-fed ‘Refill’ water coolers can now be found across the University. Bath Spa University is committed to reducing single use plastics on campus. Last year, we used 135,100 single-use plastic cups at Bath Spa. In the UK alone, the amount of single-use plastic wasted every year would fill the Royal Albert Hall one thousand times. We’re determined to help address the devastating impact plastic is having on our environment, so this summer we ditched plastic cups at water coolers across our campuses. Our new ‘Refill’ water stations are suitable for bottle refilling, and have a greater chilling capacity. All 35 of Bath Spa University’s publicly accessible water coolers have now been uploaded to the Refill app-based map.
