FROM THE PUBLISHER
A guide to investing in our community
ROLFE MCCOLLISTER JR. ON NOV. 15, Americans celebrated National Philanthropy Day. The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Greater Baton Rouge hosted a luncheon on Nov. 20 to celebrate and honor local philanthropists. inRegister magazine, which features charitable events throughout the year, was proud to be one of the sponsors for this event. You can find the 2015 National Philanthropy Day honorees featured on page 11. We salute them and all of those individuals and companies in the Capital Region who give generously to help others and build our community. The end of the year is a time when many will traditionally make donation decisions for the year—or budget for the next year. Last year, we introduced this unique publication concept of a “giving guide,” which we believed could be helpful to you, our readers, as you or your company planned your own philanthropy. This guide provides key information on many of the nonprofits in the Baton Rouge area and what they are doing. Inside, they share details on their mission, funding, projects, services, events and leadership.
We hope it will be helpful to you in deciding where to donate and invest either your money or your time. Louisiana has always been about the goodness and kindness of neighbors, friends and family—who help others not only in times of crisis but also with everyday needs. We are there for one another. Much of that help comes from the many nonprofits, charities and institutions of learning supported by the generosity of donors and volunteers—like you. These groups play a critical role in our community and improve the quality of life for us all—every day. Like you, we believe in giving back to support nonprofits and our community. We offer space in this guide to nonprofits at less than half our regular rates. That was one of the ways we could contribute to them—and provide valuable information to you from organizations that make the Capital Region a better place to live. There are 38 featured inside. Our company and our staff at Business Report, 225 and inRegister appreciate the generous people of the Capital Region and the wonderful nonprofits and charities who help so many. Thank you. We also want to thank our sponsors for this publication, Our Lady of the Lake Foundation and Capital Area United Way. We hope you find it helpful as you step forward and help others. Sincerely,

For Louisiana’s children, the opportunity of a lifetime
A
JOHN PAUL FUNES President & CEO Our Lady of the Lake Foundation
historical moment is quickly approaching for children’s health care in Louisiana. In 2016, a vision imagined by the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System will leap to life and forever change how we care for children throughout our state and beyond. As one of the largest providers of pediatric care in the state, the hospital’s vision is to build a freestanding Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital that will serve as a premier destination for high-quality, advanced medical care for children within a statewide network of pediatric health care excellence. The hospital will attract greater subspecialists in pediatric specialties, increasing our capabilities to offer advanced medical care and allowing more children to receive excellent care close to home. In addition it will further advance care and research for children with cancer and other advanced illnesses by continued strategic partnerships like that of our relationship with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Even before groundbreaking, we feel the impact and influence of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital throughout the state. The
hospital already extends beyond the physical walls of a building. We have been able to support community pediatricians throughout the state; provide specialty care in outreach clinics in Monroe, Gonzales, Hammond and Lafayette; and our pediatric transport team serves the most critically ill patients in Louisiana and surrounding states such as Mississippi and Texas. Your support of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital gives you the opportunity to affect change and have a profound impact on Louisiana’s children. A healthy child will grow into a healthy adult who will have the chance to contribute to a better Louisiana. The coming year is vital to the future and success of a freestanding children’s hospital. We won’t achieve any of our goals without you. Please join us as advocates and community leaders so we continue to grow support for what we can achieve for the children of Louisiana.
Moving the needle on our community’s pressing issues
T
DARRIN GOSS SR. President/CEO Capital Area United Way
hanks to you, Capital Area United Way is celebrating 90 years of mobilizing time, talent and treasure to impact the lives of family, friends and neighbors. We are an organization where the dollars raised are allocated to solving community issues. We recently looked at our business model, questioning the value of being an allocations-only organization versus becoming an impact organization—one that moves the needle on our community’s most pressing issues in education, income stability and healthy living. We do this through partnerships, collaboration and leveraging the dollars we raise, the relationships we hold and the volunteer expertise we bring to the table. We must increase our annual campaign to $16 million by the spring of 2019. We have the programs and service providers to meet needs, and now we need the funds to execute. We raise money, engage volunteers and produce advocates because we want to see everyone in our community reach their full potential. We are doing this through technology
that makes giving easier, involving retirees and engaging millennials. We are focused on partnering with our corporate partners to achieve socially responsible goals. Our Community Roadmap will provide the framework for how and in who we will invest moving forward. How we measure success will be published this spring when we unveil our funded programs and services. Capital Area United Way is focused on four bold goals: decreasing the number of people who are hungry, homeless and lack basic needs; increasing the number of children who start school ready; decreasing the number of working poor; and increasing the number of people with access to affordable and appropriate health care. We love the Capital Area and its people. We ask you to give, advocate and volunteer.

INTRODUCTION
A celebration of philanthropy PHILANTHROPY IS “the love of humankind,” and National Philanthropy Day® is the day that thousands of people around the world come together to both put that word into action and to recognize the change that word has brought to our communities. In short, NPD is a celebration of philanthropy—giving, volunteering and charitable engagement—that highlights the accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy—and all those involved in the philanthropic process—brings to our society. National Philanthropy Day® is both an official day and a grassroots movement to increase public interest and awareness of the importance of philanthropy, as well as knowledge on giving, volunteering and engagement at the charitable level. Every year, since 1986 when President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day®, communities have celebrated
by hosting events to recognize the activities of donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, and corporations engaged in philanthropy. While many people show interest in giving or getting involved, they often need a reminder about nonprofit needs and need to be inspired by stories of success. NPD spurs action by providing ways for people to connect with causes and each other—so they can be inspired by what others are doing and create their own ideas for philanthropic engagement. Turn the page to see this year’s NPD award recipients. The Association of Fundraising Professionals is founder of the NPD movement, and we work with organizations that support philanthropy and charitable engagement. Since its inception in 1960, AFP has been helping nonprofits and charities and supporting fundraising efforts around the world that have generated more than $1trillion.

Laiyla Washington was treated at Baton Rouge General’s Regional Burn Center.
Your Gift Can Make a Difference “In the spring of 2014, my daughter Laiyla was burned in a kitchen accident and suffered third-degree burns on her body and one side of her face. During the month that she was hospitalized at Baton Rouge General, she received an amazing amount of care and love and attention … which truly helped her heal. Our family will always be grateful.” – Shanrika Phillips Baton Rouge General’s Foundation makes a difference in the lives of those seeking health and healing in our community. During this holiday season, please consider making a tax-deductible gift to Baton Rouge General. Your gift will help us enhance the services and programs that directly and positively impact even our youngest patients like Laiyla, whose sweet smile is a reminder of how we touch lives and make a difference every day. Baton Rouge General’s Burn Center is one of only 126 burn centers in the country. Annually, the Center treats more than 90% of all inpatient burns in our region.

HOW WE PUT THIS PROGRAM TO WORK FOR YOU An important first step of the program is educating employers on obstacles of poverty. An educated management team will result in better recognition of issues and greater understanding on when intervention is necessary. Our Understanding your Workforce© six-hour professional development training program covers learned behaviors of economic class, causes of poverty, adverse childhood experiences and their effects on an adult, what it takes to get out of poverty, how family structure impacts the ability to succeed and more. In order to help employers maintain a reliable workforce, we need to delve into barriers that hinder their success. Our case managers/career counselors perform an in depth assessment to uncover these issues and work toward personal stability and becoming a qualified member of the employer’s workforce.
We build a better workforce.

EACH CHRISTMAS THROUGH our Adopt a Birthmother campaign, we have the opportunity to help birthmothers who have made the decision to forever change the life of their child and a St. Elizabeth Foundation family. We ask volunteers to help a birthmother have a Merry Christmas by being her family’s Santa. Your help to a birthmother at Christmas can make a difficult time more joyous. To adopt a birthmother this Christmas, call (225) 769-8888.
Donations help us to better serve the many women who wish to make the best life for their child but for many reasons—financial, emotional and familial—cannot parent. If we can meet their needs, our birthmothers will be well-informed about adoption, understand that it is a loving choice for their child, have the support they may not otherwise have access to, and have the opportunity to improve the quality of their lives.

We understand that there is stress on both sides, whether deciding how to handle an unplanned pregnancy or deciding to adopt. We know that the process is not alway easy, but that’s where we come in. OUR VISION IS that one day Louisiana will be a state which values its children, protects them from harm and does not tolerate their abuse and neglect. Our goal is to engage every citizen in Louisiana to take an active role in creating happy, healthy childhoods for our state’s children. From learning about child development through our Family Nurturing
Center, asking for help on our KIDLINE, learning how to protect children from sexual abuse through Stewards of Children or planting a Pinwheel during Child Abuse Prevention month, there is a role for everyone to play.
FUNDRAISING/EVENTS APRIL IS CHILD Abuse Prevention Month, and we kick it off with a luncheon that is free and open to the public. We promote awareness through our Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. In 2015 we planted Pinwheel gardens at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge, as well as other locations in Lafayette, New Orleans and Hammond. We distributed more
than 17,000 Pinwheels to 74 schools, Child Advocacy Centers and CASA centers. Kappa Delta’s national philanthropy is Prevent Child Abuse America; every year the LSU Kappa Delta Chapter hosts a jambalaya sale during the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Baton Rouge.

For 33 years, the Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana has been an effective force in the protection of Louisiana’s marine resources. Instrumental in many conservation victories, including the banning of gill nets in Louisiana waters and the establishment of gamefish status for redfish, CCA Louisiana works every day with policy makers at the State Capital and in Washington D.C. to ensure our coastal resources remain bountiful for generations to come. CCA furthers its mission through our prolific habitat program, building artificial reefs and marsh projects across the Louisiana coast. In addition, we are helping to build the next generation of conservationists through our youth outreach programs, designed to instill an ethic of coastal stewardship in kids throughout the “Sportsman’s Paradise.” Come share in Join CCA today!

No matter who you are, every last one of us deserves decent shelter. It provides us with the most basic of human needs. And since Habitat for Humanity builds quality homes for deserving families, it seemed like the perfect partnership for Jack in the Box. First, we must have a place to live in order to provide a place to grow. I’m proud of helping the city of Baton Rouge grow with this partnership, because we are helping more deserving families in need of decent shelter. As an LSU alum, it’s important to me to be able to give back to the community that has given so much to me. TODD KELLER Baton Rouge Franchise Operator Jack in the Box
Over 120,000 people in the Greater Baton Rouge area live in poverty housing. Families living in poverty housing struggle every day with problems like overcrowded living conditions, a home in disrepair, or paying rent that is almost half of their paycheck. These problems negatively affect a homeowner’s ability to live and grow, as well as their children’s chance at having a successful future. Our mission is about more than building houses with families living in poverty, we are building hope in our community and giving families the chance to invest in their future. Our program gives these families the opportunity to thrive and flourish in a manner that may not have been possible without Habitat.

GOALS EPISCOPAL IS COMMITTED to attracting engaged students who, by discovering more about themselves and the world around them, develop a responsibility to serve others while pursuing opportunities in academics, arts, athletics and spirituality. An inclusive student body with global perspectives broadens the scope of the Episcopal experience and
fosters a dynamic learning community.
