BREC has more than 180 parks including a unique mix of facilities, which mirror the history and rich natural resources in the region; including a state-of-the-art observatory, a swamp nature center and conservation areas, a performing arts theatre, an equestrian park, an art gallery, an arboretum, an accredited zoo, six golf courses and an extreme sports park with a 30,000-foot concrete skate park, rock-climbing wall, BMX track and velodrome. Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center If waterworks aren’t for you, but you’re still in need of some outdoor fun, try exploring the

Levee bike path A 4.31 mile stretch of the levee bike path extends from the end of the downtown promenade just north of the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge and continues south past Skip Bertman Drive at LSU to Farr Park. The 15-foot-wide path includes separate lanes for bicycles and walkers/joggers as well as lighting, seating and water fountains. The bike path links to the existing one-mile riverfront promenade in Downtown Baton Rouge. A trailhead with parking is located under the Mississippi River Bridge near the start of the levee path and another is located at Skip Bertman Drive.

This 4.15-acre park on University Lake features a sand beach and handicappedaccessible pier, offering a unique spot for leisure recreation for the entire family. Recent improvements to the park include a new pedestrian bridge, exercise station, benches and water fountain. Treasure hunt You can find them nearby in urban parks, deep in a patch of woods on the outskirts of town or even scattered across LSU’s campus. Just about anywhere around Baton Rouge, there’s a geocache to be found. Caches are small containers in which participants who find them leave their marks—by leaving a trinket for the next person who finds the cache or by signing a logbook rolled up inside. Geocaching is easy for novices, who can use a free smartphone app and GPS coordinates to find caches nearby. Garden stroll By May, the daylilies are in bloom at BREC’s Botanic Garden at Independence Park. They surround the garden’s sidewalks and benches in hues of fuchsia, bright red and banana yellow. The garden is alive with bumblebees buzzing happily around the flowers, dragonflies dancing between the leaves and birds chirping overhead in towering trees. There are about 250 flowers and plants here, including roses, crepe myrtles, Louisiana

irises and gingers. There’s also a butterfly garden and a sensory garden, where fragrant herbs and plants used for seasoning food grow. The garden is maintained with the help of volunteers, and although it’s been around for 25 years, its keepers see it as a work in progress—a peaceful sanctuary they are always trying to make better. brec.org

Think all of south Louisiana is low-lying swampland? Think again. The 6,500 acres that comprise Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area contain hills, bluffs, ravines and remote waterways, showcasing some of the state’s most remarkable vistas. Horseback is popular within the park, as are hiking and biking on the numerous trails maintained within the park. Hilltop Arboretum The LSU Hilltop Arboretum is a sanctuary in the middle of the city. These 14 acres were purchased as a retreat in 1929, and the grounds have been cultivated into a literal wonderland of tree canopies, bamboo groves

with members who can show you the ropes. Baton Rouge’s community parks are hotspots for geocaching, including Forest Community Park and Hartley/Vey Park. Those looking for more of an adventure can try the more densely wooded Frenchtown and Blackwater conservation areas, as well as Bluebonnet Swamp. In urban locations, items as small as film canisters might be taped to the underside of benches or the backs of street signs. In wooded areas, the caches might be in larger containers. Finds inside the containers can include virtually anything, from fake gold coins to flashlights. It’s caching custom that if you take an item from the cache, you leave something in return. But for many cachers, it’s not about the prize so much as it is about the puzzle of finding a cache. geocaching.com

Baton Rouge’s museums offer impressive collections of art, but installations can also be found on the city’s streets.

What did the future look like back in 1998? Several murals in the Riverfront Plaza in downtown Baton Rouge offer a glimpse. The Arts Council and Forum 35 asked middle school student artists back then to paint Baton Rouge in 2020—“A Vision of Opportunity with a World of Possibility.” Their depictions show the skyline dotted with flying cars, palm trees and futuristic architecture. They got at least one thing right—several of the buildings in their paintings are covered with colorful murals.

Museum of Public Art murals

The grounds of the museum use art to bring African-American history in the South to life. Outside the museum’s front entrance, a vintage Mercedes bus is painted to honor the 1953 Baton Rouge bus boycott. Under the overpass nearby, the pillars are painted with murals that show the numbers of free and enslaved colored people in Southern states during 1860. No spot is left untouched—even the cement ground in front of the museum is painted. 538 South Blvd.

Downtown sculptures Walk around downtown and you’ll spot several urban sculptures, from the historic statues surrounding the State Capitol to the large-scale bronze sculptures, including Frank Hayden’s 1979 sculpture “Head of Oliver Pollock,” and stainless steel “Crest” at the Galvez Plaza. In front of the Claiborne Building, you’ll also find painted steel flowers by artist Howard Kalish. Behind the State Capitol building, there’s an abstract steel sculpture by Merill Stigge.

They’ve proved just as popular as the haunted house with visitors and critics alike, who last year ranked The 13th Gate as having the nation’s best escape rooms. urrounded by Louisiana’s capital city and bounded on two sides by interstate highways, the Burden Museum & Gardens is an oasis of tranquility. Home to the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens, the LSU Rural Life Museum and Windrush Gardens, Burden is 440 acres that comprise forested green space, formal gardens and agricultural research plots. Once called Windrush Plantation, the property was acquired in the mid 1800s by the Burden family, who began donating the property to LSU in 1966 until the final parcel was given in the early 1990s. Steele Burden was the master planner for Windrush Gardens. He was a painter and sculptor and was best known as a landscape designer. He laid out the Windrush Gardens as well as the design for the Windrush Plantation, including lakes, roadways and allees. The LSU connection began in 1925 when LSU professor John Gray, an early authority on soybeans, established experimental plots on Windrush Plantation. Other College of Agriculture researchers soon followed. The Burden family eventually made a series of donations of land to LSU, with the property designated to be used for horticultural and agronomic research, for development of the Rural Life Museum and as a green area. Current research at the Botanic Gardens includes trials to evaluate the performance of landscape bedding plants and vegetables, with warm-season and cool-season plants rotated in approximately 5,000 square feet of raised beds. In addition, the Botanic Gardens is home to trials to evaluate various varieties of tomatoes, sweet potatoes, strawberries and many other commercial and home garden vegetables and fruits. The 3.5-acre Windrush Gardens was Steele Burden’s personal laboratory for garden design where he worked on expanding and refining his masterpiece from his 20s until his death in 1995. Windrush Gardens is accessed through the Rural Life Museum. In 1970 Steele began moving the first of many structures to the property to establish what is now the Rural Life Museum. The initial buildings came from Welham Plantation in St. James Parish. Majestic live oaks and ancient crape myrtles create a shady canopy over azaleas and camellias in the Windrush Gardens, evoking a sense of tranquility and peace. Launched by childhood friends who were tired of the corporate grind, Baton Rouge’s first and largest craft brewery turns out a tidy selection of flagship and seasonal selections, like its wildly popular Blonde Ale, Juke Joint IPA and Bayou Bengal Lager. The brewery and tap room, where you can find special small-batch selections, are situated in a funky warehouse located between downtown Baton Rouge and LSU. The engaging spot holds regular evening events like trivia night and weekly group yoga, which is held on the grounds outside the patio.

One of the country’s only estate bottled producers of spirits and rhum agricole, Cane Land Distilling in downtown Baton Rouge produces estate rum from sugarcane grown and processed by Alma Plantation sugar mill, which has been owned by Cane Land founder Walter Tharp’s family since the 19th century. Cane Land’s sleek tasting room is the perfect backdrop to sample the distillery’s impressive lineup, which includes estate rums and rhum agricole, an old school spirit with roots in the Caribbean made from just-pressed sugarcane. Chicken and Sausage Gumbo This thicker gumbo is a very popular dinner in my house. The browned flour replaces the traditional roux as a thickening and flavor agent. The gumbo freezes well. Makes 10-12 servings

1. Preheat oven to 400� F. Place flour on baking sheet; bake 20-30 minutes, stirring every 7 minutes, or until the flour is brown (color of pecan shells). This process works well in toaster oven. Set aside. 2. In large, heavy pot coated with nonstick cooking spray, sauté onion, garlic, green pepper and celery until tender. Add browned flour (the roux), stirring constantly. 3. Gradually add water, tomatoes, chicken, thyme, cayenne pepper. Bring to boil, lower heat, and simmer 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until chicken is tender. 4. While gumbo is cooking, brown sausage in skillet or in microwave oven. Add sausage, green onions, Worcestershire sauce to gumbo, cooking 10 more minutes. Skim any fat from surface of the gumbo. Serve over rice.

Orleans and Baton Rouge can lay claim on one of the more unusual public December holiday lighting displays. It’s here on the earthen levees containing the Mississippi River that local Christmas lights aren’t colored bulbs, but instead dozens of 30-feet-andhigher flaming pyramids of burning logs. The Christmas bonfires, as locals call them, are mostly teepee-shaped, but some can be odd shapes paying tribute to the river’s heritage— shapes ranging from miniature plantation homes to tiny replica paddlewheel steamships. Bonfires are built by families, friends and co-workers who visit, cook and mingle between the fires. However, ask the young and the young at heart who continue the bonfire tradition today, and the most common response is that the fires illuminate the way for Santa Claus (or Papa Noel, as the Cajuns say) flying his sleigh and eight reindeer to find the homes of local good girls and boys. The bonfires are up and down the river, but the highest concentration is in St. James Parish, in and around Gramercy, Lutcher and Paulina. The best viewing is by car along the east- and westbank River Roads (La. 44 and 13, respectively) and by walking along the levees.
