2019 AIABR BOARD KEVIN ALFORD, AIA President FRITZ EMBAUGH, AIA Vice President/President-Elect ALYCE DIETZ, AIA Treasurer

From the President WELCOME TO THE 12th annual publication of The Baton Rouge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIABR) Rose Awards. We are excited to share these notable AIABR member projects with you. This awards program recognizes and celebrates design excellence by local architects in the categories of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Renovation/ Addition, Master Planning/Urban Design, Residential, and Exquisite Detail. Winning projects fall under four categories of awards: The Rose Award for outstanding design and function, the Silver Rose Awards which are further distinguished from the Rose Award winning projects, Gold Rose Awards for exemplary design excellence, and the Members’ Choice Award, as voted on by the AIABR membership. In addition, Frank Duke presented two East Baton Rouge Planning Commission Awards. This year 28 projects were submitted to the jurors with 11 winning projects from eight different firms, judged by an amazing panel from the West Virginia area. Our 2019 distinguished panel included Head Juror Ed Tucker, FAIA, President and Principal of Edward Tucker Architects in Huntington, W.Va.; Jody Driggs, AIA, Principal of Silling Architects in Charleston, W.Va., and Jaime Ryan, AIA of Omni Associates Architects in Fairmont, W.Va. AIABR thanks the owners of these projects who invested in our community with the pursuit of design excellence, and the talented local firms who helped get them there. Please take a moment to browse the entries and winners included within for a visual overview of their design success and to recognize the potential of what our members can do for you. We would also like to recognize our sponsors, without whom this publication would not be possible. Special thanks to Salas O’Brien, JCW Productions, Lettermans, The Lemoine Company, and many others for all of your generous support. We hope you enjoy the publication, and please visit our website, AIABR. com, to learn more about our members, our chapter, and our upcoming future events.

We are pleased to present in the following pages all of the project entries for 2019, highlighting the award-winning entries. The Rose Awards: Excellence in Design program is an annual competition hosted by American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge, in which members can submit projects of outstanding architectural design in various categories. Cambria Hotel New Orleans ROSE

HOLLY & SMITH ARCHITECTS, APAC CATEGORY: Architecture

LOCATED ON THE site of a former parking lot in the historic Warehouse District, this new hotel sits comfortably in its dynamic neighborhood, surrounded by a mix of historic buildings, converted warehouses, and modern commercial and residential structures. The seven-story, 162-room hotel was designed to relate to its historic context, and respect the textures, rhythms, and massing of the neighboring buildings. With a nod to historic warehouse design, the simple palette of brick, steel, and glass rendered in a contemporary manner lends the structure a timeless but distinctive appearance.

IWD Agency ROSE

RITTER MAHER ARCHITECTS, LLC CATEGORY: Interior Architecture

IWD AGENCY, an e-commerce development agency, was modified to capitalize on the juxtaposition of existing, nostalgic materials and crisp, contemporary materials for both tactile comfort and a more rugged atmosphere to promote creativity in the workplace. It was the intention of the client to represent their company and firm personality through this duality. By focusing on simplicity, natural light can now pervade the space successfully, bathing each office and workspace in a constructive, bright glow to promote productivity.

Rocca Pizzeria ROSE

RITTER MAHER ARCHITECTS, LLC CATEGORY: Interior Architecture

WORKING WITH A modest budget, an existing Southern cuisine restaurant was completely transformed to a cultured Neapolitan pizzeria. The client’s vision was to create a chic design that reflected the unique, up-andcoming Mid City area of Baton Rouge. Minor exterior renovations included painting, building the exterior, and installing new storefront windows to allow for ample light, creating a connection between the restaurant and the pedestrians along the street. The full interior remodel included adding a bar, a dough prep room, cooler room, and redesigned kitchen for the full functionality of a pizzeria.

Balhoff Residence ROSE

COCKFIELD JACKSON ARCHITECTS CATEGORY: Residential

THIS PROJECT IS a new 8,700-square-foot 4-bedroom residence located on University Lake in Baton Rouge, and serves as a gathering and entertainment hub for a large extended family. In accordance with the owner’s requirements, the residence is designed in the traditional New Orleans Garden District two-story gallery Greek Revival architectural style, and maximizes lake views at all family gathering and entertainment areas. In order to achieve maximum lake views from the primary family room/breakfast/kitchen areas, these rooms were placed in an ancillary wing located on the left side of the dominant two-story portion of the residence, thus allowing expansive glass exposures and lake views at the ancillary wing without compromising the historically correct window arrangement used at the front façade of the home’s two-story mass.

The Fold House ROSE

MEMBER’S CHOICE

HOLLY & SMITH ARCHITECTS, APAC CATEGORY: Residential

THE RESIDENCE is located on approximately 13 acres of forested land adjacent to a creek that ties into the Natalbany River and is situated djacent to a ridge on the high point of the site. The programmatic elements are organized in a way that maximizes views over the wetland flood plain, through to the creek at the edge of the site and around the existing trees along the ridgeline. The theme of the home is centered around the use of folded planes to manipulate change and transformation of mass and form. These folds wrap around a series of programmatic pods revealing contrasting materials and openings for access, views, and natural light.

EBR Career & Technical Education Center SILVER

EBR Planning Commission Award

DOMAIN ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY: Architecture

THE EAST BATON ROUGE Career & Technical Education Center is a first in the parish school system, serving as a hub for all technical- and industrial-focused coursework and training. The design concept was for the facility to not only be a passive vessel for education, but to be an active participant in that education. All mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems in the building are on display. The building itself becomes a real-life diagram of concepts being taught in the labs and classrooms.

Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors SILVER

RHH ARCHITECTS, APAC CATEGORY: Architecture

LOCATED IN A vibrant downtown area, the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors regulates and upholds the integrity of the construction industry in Louisiana. As such, many of the reasons for visiting this facility (paying fees, filing applications, giving depositions, attending hearings) can feel like negative experiences. The challenge to the architects was to create an environment that transforms these visits into positive, inspiring experiences. By creating a transparent and welcoming facility, the architects have provided an uplifting and dignified place that leaves both contractors and staff with a strong sense of pride in their industry.

David E. Roberts Center for Economic Development SILVER

WHLC ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY: Renovations and Additions

THIS EXPANSION and renovation for the Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) provided a much-needed transformation to this 1950s-era building in downtown Baton Rouge. Working closely with BRAC leadership, WHLC developed a new institutional identity for the building’s exterior and interior. As a key resource to promote the region’s economy, the newly expanded facility serves as a strategic marketing image for a progressive business community. Multiple meeting spaces and a new 50-seat boardroom provide amenities for a dynamic staff, existing regional companies and business recruitment programs.

Cambria Hotel Nashville

GOLD

HOLLY & SMITH ARCHITECTS, APAC CATEGORY: Architecture

THIS NEW HOTEL is located in the heart of downtown Nashvile within walking distance of the city’s attractions and entertainment. The flagship property is among the largest in the new chain. The building design includes a five-story base containing four levels of parking, building services, and a white-box space for a future restaurant tenant on the ground floor. A stepped tower rises an additional 14 stories and contains 255 guest rooms and suites.

LSU Patrick F. Taylor Hall, College of Engineering

GOLD

COLEMAN PARTNERS ARCHITECTURE LLC AND PERKINS & WILL CATEGORY: Interior Architecture

THE NEW DESIGN for LSU’s 462,000-square-foot College of Engineering addresses evolving curriculum needs, increasing outreach and recruitment, and the evolution of engineering education. Its aesthetic approach makes modernist statements yet maintains the stylistic character congruent with the historic identity woven into the rest of the campus. The conversion of exterior courtyards into interior “collaborative engineering workshops“ brings natural light into the core of the building. These newly created flexible public spaces connect learning zones, auditoriums, laboratories, and faculty and staff areas with building services. The design trends of transparency and collaboration are integrated throughout the addition and expansion to engage disciplines and promote engineering on display.

BUILDING IDEAS:

The Making of Architecture NOV. 6 – DEC. 9, 2019

THE GALLERY AT MANSHIP THEATRE

The process of architecture is mysterious. Each architect has his or her own approach to the initial spark that becomes a project. The various and inherent constraints of any project, such as the owner’s needs, budget, code requirements and gravity, as well as the architect’s aesthetic interests and the process of construction itself provide endless opportunities to shape architecture. The projects in this exhibit were chosen for their design excellence by an independent jury including some of the most respected architects in the Maryland area. These entries are a part of the American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge Rose Awards held in July each year and are exemplary examples by AIA Baton Rouge architects. 2 0 1 9 R O S E A W A R D S . a i a b r. c o m . 1 1
