EXPERIENCE

48 hours

in Baton Rouge By Allyson Guay

There is something for everyone in this beautiful city. Whether here on business or to take in a game, these are a few can’t-miss sights in the Capital City.

1. Old Governor’s Mansion

The Old Governor’s Mansion was built in 1930 under the governorship of the infamous Huey P. Long and served as the official residence to nine Louisiana governors and their families until 1962. It’s now a historic house museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop by for a tour and see memorabilia, antiques and history of past Louisiana governors. 502 North Blvd. | 225.387.2464

2. Pentagon Barracks

Originally the site of a dirt fort erected by the British in 1779, the Pentagon Barracks was won and lost by the Spanish, French, and the British. During its use as a military post, many public figures served or visited, including Robert E. Lee, George Custer, Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln. The four, two-story brick buildings were built in 1825, and the fort remained a U.S. military post until 1861 when it was seized by the state of Louisiana, who turned the operation of the arsenal over to the Confederacy. After the Civil War, in 1884, the General Assembly of Louisiana passed a resolution allocating the full usage of the buildings and grounds of the Pentagon Barracks to Louisiana State University. Today the Pentagon Barracks houses a museum, the offices of the lieutenant governor and private apartments for state legislators. 702 River Road | 225.342.1866

3. Capitol Park Museum

The Capitol Park Museum encourages exploration of the most vibrant state in America from the American Indians to the colonists to agriculture and music. Experience the passion, adventure and discovery that built the Bayou State. Exhibits on slave markets, resistance, revolt and Jim Crow provide a glimpse into the unimaginable plight of people of color who contributed to the cultural fabric of Louisiana. Exhibits also include a rare Civil War submarine and artifacts from steamboats, including trophy antlers won by the Robert E. Lee in the Great Steamboat Race of 1870. 660 N. 4th St. | 225.342.5428

4. LSU campus

Stroll the oak-shaded campus, visit the legendary “Death Valley” Tiger Stadium and stop to visit Mike the Tiger’s 15,000-square-foot enclosure, with creature comforts like a waterfall and wading pool, right next to LSU Tiger Stadium. W. Stadium Dr. | LSU Campus | 225.578.0628

5. Louisiana State capitol buildings, old and new

OLD: The old State Capitol sits on a hill overlooking the Mississippi River. Completed in 1849, the castle-like fortress is now being restored to its original grandeur. It houses both traditional and state-of-the-art interactive exhibits and multimedia film presentations. 100 North Boulevard | 225.342.0500 NEW: Alhough it was built in 1932 by Gov. Huey P. Long, locals still refer to it as new. The tallest capitol in the U.S., the Louisiana State Capitol building is 450 feet high with 34 floors. The observation deck is on the 27th floor overlooking the city of Baton Rouge, and the views of the gardens are spectacular. In 1935, the building was the site of Long’s assassination. Senator Long is buried on the grounds with a statue facing the Capitol. 900 North Third St. | 225.342.7317 12

While there is no shortage of eateries in the area, a few have stood the test of time. Visit these Baton Rouge landmarks and taste the history.

Poor Boy Lloyd’s

With live music, daily specials, plate lunches and, of course, poboys, this downtown joint should be on your list. In downtown Baton Rouge since 1967, Poor Boy Lloyd’s is where the locals go for homestyle Cajun, Creole and Southern favorites. 201 Florida St. 225.387.2271 DAVID GALL EN

Chicken Shack

The Delpit family’s Chicken Shack has been a central part of the Baton Rouge community since 1937 at its flagship Acadian Thruway location. The “knuckle-suckin’ good” fried chicken has a well-guarded secret recipe and for good reason. Be sure to try the boudin balls and real southern sides. 413 N. Acadian Thruway 225.383.0940

Located on the LSU campus, The Chimes Restaurant and Tap Room has been a Baton Rouge tradition for over 25 years. It’s traditional Louisiana fare with one of the most extensive beer and liquor selections available. Above the restaurant sits the large rooftop bar with televisions and a birdseye view. 3357 Highland Road 225.383.1754

Coffee Call

It’s the New Orleans style coffeehouse where locals go for cafe au laits, hot chocolates and incredible beignets. Coffee Call has been a gathering place for friends and family for more than 30 years. The family business and Baton Rouge staple has been serving up the same magical beignet recipe since 1976. 3132 College Dr. | 225. 925.9493

Time seems to stand still at Pinetta’s, an intimate hideaway with red and white checkered tablecloths and dim candlelight, transporting diners to a cozy European tavern. Traditional Italian, German and Turkish recipes have been lovingly prepared since 1962. 3056 Perkins Road 225.387.9134

HOUMAS HOUSE ESTATE

THE WATERMARK HOTEL

After a day of exploring south Louisiana, continue your cultural immersion even as you lay your head on the pillow for a well-deserved rest.

A downtown icon

Looking for a stay that’s both traditional and eclectic? The Watermark is part of the Autograph Collection Hotels. The building in the heart of downtown Baton Rouge dates back a century, when intrepid financiers built the skyscraper as the headquarters of Louisiana Trust & Savings Bank. Much of that era remains in the modern-day art deco designed luxury hotel, in hand-painted ceiling murals, carved marble walls and staircases, and old bank vaults converted into dramatic meeting and dining spaces. For dining, enjoy southern classics at The Gregory or grab deli favorites at Milford’s on Third. watermarkbr.com

A gilded mansion

ST. FRANCISVILLE INN

Located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, The Houmas House Estate allows visitors to experience life on a sugarcane plantation in the 1800s. Guests can stay overnight at The Inn at Houmas House, a collection of quaint cottages that sit among an alley of ancient oak trees and lush gardens. Each room is decorated with Old World furnishings and offers its own porch to enjoy the view. Breakfast for two and a guided tour of the mansion are included as part of the package. Refreshment and dining experiences include Latil’s Landing Restaurant, The Carriage House Restaurant, Café Burnside, The Turtle Bar and The Wine Cellars of Houmas House. houmashouse.com

A night at the inn

For decades, visitors from across the country and Europe have ventured to historic St. Francisville and enjoyed a stay at the St. Francisville Inn. Before retiring for the evening, enjoy an evening in The Saint—a craft cocktail bar that features small plates and high-end wines from around the world, Japanese whiskies, Scottish gins, and a wide variety of American bourbons and Mexican tequilas. Choose your spot for breakfast: in the main dining room, the breakfast room, the sunroom or the courtyard, weather permitting. If you’re there on a Sunday, you’ll be lucky enough to experience the Plantation Buffet. stfrancisvilleinn.com

A day in the park

Baton Rouge’s award-winning recreational department (BREC) manages dozens of parks throughout the city. Plan a picnic, bring the kids, and spend some family time immersed in the sunshine and fresh air. If you’ve got a canine friend with you, head to one of our dog parks—one in the Garden District, another on Burbank Drive, and one on Harrell’s Ferry Road.

Tailgating

If you’re in town for an LSU or Southern University home game, don’t miss out on the excitement of tailgating on campus. Many locals tailgate on campus during the day, then head home or to local restaurants to watch the game. So pack a lunch, bring a chair, pick a spot, and enjoy the fun of cheering on the Tigers and the Jaguars on Game Day.

Special events

By the same token, check your calendar so as not to miss other free seasonal events, such as 4th of July (fireworks on the river); Mardi Gras (parades); and a slew of festivals throughout the year, including White Light Night in November and Festival of Lights in December.

The chef finishes the pies by sprinkling a unique blend of romano and mozzarella cheeses and an array of traditional toppings like pepperoni, salami or any of our house-smoked meats. If you’re craving something besides pizza, City Slice specializes in items like our baby back ribs, our “almost famous” smoked wings, and our pork fries topped with BBQ pork, bacon, queso, slaw, and BBQ sauce.
