Baton Rouge (bat’n’roozh): French for “red stick,” a reference to a cypress pole stained with animal blood that marked the boundary between the Houma Tribe and the Bayou Goula hunting grounds. It was one of the first things French explorer Sieur d’Iberville saw as he led an expedition party up the Mississippi River near Scott’s Bluff. WELCOME TO LOUISIANA’S CAPITAL CITY! From sun-kissed evenings under canopies of century-old oaks to late nights spent dancing under the stars, there’s plenty to see and do, with an authenticity and culture that runs as deep as the South. While 2020 was an unprecedented year, Baton Rouge continued to add new dining options and outdoor spaces with safety and cleanliness top of mind and here to stay. From unique local restaurants to interactive culinary experiences where you can eat and play safely, we provide a mixture of Creole, Cajun and everything in between that sets us apart. Downtown Baton Rouge, Mid City and Scotlandville, one of the oldest and most famous African American neighborhoods in the area, are in the midst of a cultural revitalization. With the opening of exciting restaurants, new nightlife options and a vibrant arts scene, these areas have seen a surge of energy that is better experienced than explained. Dance the night away at one of our live music venues, sip a cocktail overlooking the Mississippi River, take a picture in front of one of our many public art works or murals or simply stroll along the riverfront or one of the city’s many green spaces. We’re always saying “y’all come back now” and we are ready to welcome you as soon as you’re ready to travel. Discover us virtually prior to your visit on VisitBatonRouge.com and then plan to see us in person for an affordable trip that will leave you looking to return for more. Whether you’re here for the ultimate college football experience at Louisiana State University and Southern University this fall or taking in some of the many cultural and historic attractions, there’s plenty to keep you sticking around for more. You’ll be hard-pressed to find two bands better than LSU’s Golden Band from Tigerland and Southern University’s famed “Human Jukebox.” The staff at Visit Baton Rouge is here to help you make memorable moments during your stay. Visit our website (www.visitbatonrouge.com), like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram for more information. IT IS MY GREAT HONOR to welcome you to Baton Rouge, Louisiana’s Capital City and a place many of us are proud to call home. Named by French explorers as “the Red Stick City,” Baton Rouge is where Louisiana’s capital, flagship university, and unique Cajun and Creole cultures all come together in one nine-parish region. Baton Rouge is the fifth largest city on the Mississippi River and home to Louisiana’s largest parish. Baton Rouge represents more than 200 years of history. Many artifacts and contemporary items can be viewed at our museums and other local venues, including the Old Governor’s Mansion, Capitol Park Museum, LSU Museum of Art, Southern Museum of Art, and the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. Baton Rouge is also home to two major universities, Louisiana State University and Southern University, as well as Baton Rouge Community College, one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the nation. It is always a great time to visit as we are glad to host a number of free family-friendly events throughout the year. While you’re here, take advantage of our outstanding cultural attractions and remember to visit one or several of the restaurants located throughout the Baton Rouge area. With such a variety of cuisines to offer, there is something for everyone. On behalf of all the citizens who live and work in this great city, welcome and have a great stay!

SOUTHERN STYLE

Baton Rouge A capital city with small-town charm

The Capito l grou nds at the edge of dow ntow n Baton Roug e.

The Baton Rouge skyline.

NESTLED ON THE BANKS of the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge is unique. As a capital city, it is Louisiana’s political hub and home to the state’s flagship university. But as a traditional Southern city, it is also dotted by antebellum landmarks and marked by a rich Cajun and Creole history. In its 203-year history, it has flown the flags of France, England and Spain, and has absorbed bits and pieces of those cultures to create its own special character. Where else but in Baton Rouge can a visitor take a museum tour and a swamp tour on the same day? Visit a sugarcane plantation and a World War II Navy destroyer on the same afternoon? Watch a football game at Tiger Stadium or cheer on the Jaguars at Southern University in the same weekend? Depending on when you visit, you might choose to time-travel to the Medieval Age at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival—or share in the Christmas tradition, Lighting of the Bonfires, on the levee along River Road between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate here!

Coffee Call

EN DAVID GALL

Gino’s has been a favorite staple of the Baton Rouge community for over 50 years. Established in 1966 by the Marino family and still family owned and operated, Gino’s specializes in traditional southern Italian food, prepared Mediterranean style, fresh delicious seafood and top-quality steaks. Try the signature dish, Arancini and the house specialty Laurence Bread is something to write home about. Enjoy the atmosphere with etched-glass reminiscent of Italy, a cozy fireplace, copper tabletops and romantic candlelight as you experience truly outstanding Italian dishes. 4542 Bennington Ave. | 70808 | 225.927.7156

Chicken Shack

The Delpit family’s Chicken Shack has been a central part of the Baton Rouge community since 1937 at its flagship Acadian Thruway location. The “knuckle-suckin’ good” fried chicken has a well-guarded secret recipe and for good reason. Be sure to try the boudin balls and real southern sides. 413 N. Acadian Thruway | 70806 | 225.383.0940

Since 1964, Frank’s has been serving up traditional Southern dishes just like Grandma used to make. The best buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy, homemade apple butter, country ham and more. With two locations equipped with full-service smokehouses, Frank’s provides in-house smoked turkey, sausage, boudin, ham and more. Stop in for breakfast or try a fried seafood plate, red beans and rice with homemade sausage, chicken fried steak and all the southern sides you crave. 8353 Airline Hwy. | 70815 | 225.926.5977

With live music, daily specials, plate lunches and, of course, po-boys, this downtown joint should be on your list. In downtown Baton Rouge since 1967, Poor Boy Lloyd’s is where the locals go for homestyle Cajun, Creole and Southern favorites. 201 Florida St. | 70801 | 225.387.2271

EXPERIENCE

Out and about

Especially now, visitors are encouraged to spend time in the great outdoors. And in Baton Rouge, there are plenty of opportunities to “take it outside” as you get to know the capital city. Keep a mask with you, wash your hands often, and practice social distancing with others.

The Botanic Garden at Independence Park

The Botanic Garden at Independence Park is a great way to relax–surrounded by the beautiful colors and sweet fragrances of flowers, no less!

BREC Extreme Sports Parks

There’s a definite “thrill” factor at several BREC parks, including Perkins Road Park, which boasts a Velodrome , a rock wall, and a BMX track.

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

PHOTO BY CC LOCKWOOD, PROVIDED BY BREC BATON ROUGE ZOO

It’s one of Baton Rouge’s best-kept secrets—Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center. Take a stroll through the swamp and keep an eye out for foxes and barred owls. If you’re a birdwatcher, be sure to bring your binoculars.

LSU Lakes

If you’ve got a canoe, paddle board or kayak, head to the Highland Road Park (launch) or the LSU Lakes and get your paddle on.

BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo

Especially for families with young children, nothing beats a visit to the zoo! 14

PLAY

Free time Baton Rouge offers so much to do— and some don’t cost a thing!

River song

Walk along the levee downtown and take in a view of the Mississippi River. At River Road and Florida Boulevard, check out the artist Po Shu Wang’s “Sing the River” sculpture, which plays music that corresponds to the tidal movement of the river.

Sweet ride

For a scenic bike ride, visit Comite River Park or Hooper Road Park. You can also ride the levee bike path downtown, which offers easy access to many of the city’s tourist destinations.

Enjoy the view

Louisiana’s State Capitol building downtown is the tallest in the country at 34 stories high. Go to the 27th floor Observation Deck for a free (and incredible) view of the city.

All lit up

Some of the city’s most popular festivals are back, including the 4th of July Fireworks on the River), Festival of Lights in December, and Red Stick Revelry on New Year’s Eve.

Listen to the music

Check out the Sunday in the Park concerts, which are scheduled for April and May downtown.

A day in the park

Baton Rouge’s award-winning recreational department (BREC) manages dozens of local parks throughout the city. Plan a picnic, bring the kids, and spend some family time immersed in the sunshine and fresh air. If you’ve got a canine friend with you, head to one of Baton Rouge’s dog parks—in the Garden District, on Burbank Drive, in Baker, Zachary, and on Harrell’s Ferry Road. 16
