How the list comes together IN THE SPRING, Business Report sent announcements and emails to all companies on our recent Top 100 lists as well as to those identified as possible qualifiers and those suggested by readers. We also placed notices on our websites, asking companies to post their information or submit it to us. We followed up with emails, phone calls and research to confirm the data. In some cases we looked at related industry performance reports and other business compilations to estimate revenue. Some companies declined to reveal their numbers, so we relied on public information and sources to make reasonable estimates. Those companies are denoted in the list’s footnotes. Companies were ranked according to their reported or estimated revenue for the most recently completed fiscal year, which in most cases was the calendar year 2016. We thank all the participating Top 100 companies in preparing this year’s list.

Sharing our own WE AREN’T AMONG the Top 100 private companies, although we’d like to be. But because we ask for your numbers, we will share ours. DAY LIFE

in the A of a TOP 100 PRIVATE COMPANY IT TAKES A VILLAGE From accounting to selling zucchini, the companies on our annual Top 100 list cover a wide spectrum of products and services offered, as well as industry sectors. Despite these differences, each share the bond of success being defined by the contributions from each member of their respective team. Photographers Collin Ritchie and Don Kadair spent a day with three companies on this year’s list—Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry, Manda Fine Meats and DEMCO—to chronicle the people who work together to make each business a success.

Scott Berg serves as Baton Rouge market president and has become the public face of Lee Michaels in recent years, serving on several community and philanthropic boards.

The company, founded by Lee Michael Berg, has expanded from one Baton Rouge store to eight locations in six cities and is currently run by Scott Berg and his two brothers.

The assistant merchandise manager evaluates gemstones that will become part of the Lee Michaels line of jewelry and the company, as members of the American Gem Society, has qualified professions for insurance valuations and other gemological services.

LEE MICHAELS FINE JEWELRY

Designer Mariella Brochard produces the company’s catalogues and promotional material.

WHAT BEGAN WITH one Baton Rouge store in 1978 has grown into one of the largest independent jewelry stores in the country. Founded by Lee Michael Berg and his wife, Brenda—and now run by his three sons, Scott, Ryan and Chad—Lee Michaels and its signature red box accented with a black ribbon and bow has become the symbol for fine jewelry in the Baton Rouge community. Over the past 35-plus years, the company has expanded into New Orleans, Lafayette, Shreveport, Jackson, Mississippi, and San Antonio. In recent years, Lee Michaels has been reinvesting in its existing markets, relocating or remodeling seven of the company’s eight stores. The returns have paid off, with the company posting $54.6 million in revenues in 2016, up slightly from the previous year and good enough to move up three spots to No. 76 on this year’s Top 100 list. MANDA FINE MEATS

PH OTO E SSAY

Workers begin rolling the sausage links onto bars, or sticks, as they prepare to send the product to the smokehouse.

THE FLAVOR MAY say it all, but it’s dialect is a combination of Sicilian and Cajun influences created in 1947 by brothers Vincent, John and Bennie Manda. Starting what was then called the Manda Brothers Provisions Company, the three sold flavored smoked sausages, andouille, boudin, hog head cheese and deli meats. Today, Manda Fine Meats is owned and operated by three of Vincent Manda’s grandsons, with Bobby Yarborough serving as the company’s CEO since 1997. Under Yarborough’s leadership, the Manda family business has expanded and thrived. Today, the company has some 175 employees and its products are sold in 15 states. While its core market remains along the Gulf Coast, company officials say they are looking to further expand their market presence. Though 2016 was a down year in terms of revenue, slipping 3.9% to $43.9 million, Manda has posted steady gains in recent years. Even so, the company climbed two spots to No. 83 in this year’s Top 100 rankings. PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLLIN RICHIE

The process of making sausage begins by weighing the raw products by batch size.

Each “stick” of rolled sausage is placed on a cart that’s rolled into the smokehouse for cooking.

DEMCO DEMCO, WHICH began as a nonprofit membership corporation in 1938 serving some 750 members in three parishes, has grown to become the largest electric cooperative in the state, providing power for 102,000 members in seven southeast Louisiana parishes— Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and East and West Feliciana. Being one of the nation’s fastest growing cooperatives doesn’t come without its challenges—especially from Mother Nature. Twice in the past five years, including last summer’s record-setting flood, severe weather left wide swaths of its customers without power, forcing repair crews into dangerous action. Corporate growth is evident on the bottom line, with DEMCO posting $207.3 million in revenue in 2016, up slightly from the previous year, and enough to move the company up one spot to No. 26 on this year’s Top 100 list. Ups & downs LEGAL INSIGHT:

Early Stage Financing: Raising capital for the valuation-challenged Entrepreneurs take great pride in building an enterprise from the ground up. Even owners of privately held businesses, however, need not always go it alone. With appropriate terms and timing, early stage financing can give them the boost they need to take their organizations to the next level. Valuing an early stage business is often key to its finding and attracting investors and lenders. However, for startup companies, particularly those in emerging industries, valuation can present a significant challenge. Many lack objective performance data and/ or revenue usually needed to secure traditional equity and/or debt financing. However, there are a range of innovative investment structures that can enable a startup to obtain financing on the basis of at least a salable valuation, or to obtain financing even when the question of valuation is deferred until the startup is more mature. At Jones Walker LLP, our experienced business and finance lawyers can help business owners and entrepreneurs assess their financing needs and develop and implement an effective capitalraising strategy.

We don’t just practice in this community

WE’RE A PART OF IT

In 1937, Jones Walker LLP began as a small law firm in New Orleans. We’re now one of the largest firms in the U.S., serving a broad range of industries, from energy and healthcare to banking and construction. Our Baton Rouge office opened in 1980 and has grown to more than 40 attorneys. While we’ve certainly changed over the years, what hasn’t changed is our steadfast commitment to companies and organizations in Baton Rouge–and helping our clients meet their legal challenges, whether they are large corporations in highly regulated industries or entrepreneurs. Perhaps that’s why The BTI Consulting Group, which conducts hundreds of in-house counsel interviews to identify the top client service firms in the nation, named Jones Walker to its 2017 Client Service A-Team.

RALPH’S MARKET

STUART & COMPANY GENERAL CONTRACTORS

Ralph’s Market is a local family-owned grocery store with two locations in Gonzales. A father-and-son team, Emerson and Ralph Singletary, opened the supermarket in 1984, and in 2000 it was acquired by another father-and-son duo, Elmore and Ronnie Trosclair. Today the supermarket is owned and operated by Ronnie Trosclair and his sons. At its height, Ralph’s had four locations: The two still operating in Gonzales, another at Jones Creek and a fourth in St. Tammany Parish.

This Baton Rouge-based construction company has been on the brink of Top 100 since 2014 when it ranked No. 105, with nearly $27 million in revenue. Stuart & Company General Contractors got its start in 2003 with CEO and President Christopher Stuart at the helm. Among the company’s notable construction projects are Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge, the Westside LTC College Campus, Fairwood Branch Library, and the fire stations in Port Allen and Prairieville.

What our Top 100 executives have to say Quote to live by CEOs often turn to books from other CEOs for inspiration and lessons on how to grow and manage their business. And the executives surveyed for Top 100 are no different, but Will Kiser, vice president of operations for Hargrove and Associates, took it a step further, offering a go-to quote from his favorite book:

“Great CEOs face the pain. They deal with the sleepless nights, the cold sweats, and… ‘the torture.’ Whenever I meet a successful CEO, I ask them how they did it. Mediocre CEOs point to their brilliant strategic moves or their intuitive business sense or a variety of other self-congratulatory explanations. The great CEOs tend to be remarkably consistent in their answers. They all say, ‘I DIDN’T QUIT.’” —BEN HOROWITZ, entrepreneur and author, The Hard Thing About Hard Things

ANSWERING THE MILLENNIAL QUESTION Baby boomers may still control the Baton Rouge business landscape but millennials—and their unique value set—are the dominant demographic in the workforce. So we asked Top 100 executives how their businesses are adapting to this wave of new-thinking employees.

“We have had success with making clear goals along with accountability. (Millennials) have been taught at an early age that everyone is a winner, but they are clever enough to figure out that is not reality. Always set a positive role model and do not be afraid to apologize when you make a mistake. Admitting a mistake is not weakness, but courageous.” —DANIEL KAIS, president, Sigma Engineers and Constructors Inc.

“Definitely more electronic means of communications. It is hard to get them on the phone, but they will respond to a text immediately. I don’t quite get that though.” —TREY BEALL, president, Gulf Coast Office Products

“We’ve created an open and spacious environment in our new building. We’ve also provided many informal common areas which encourages people to gather throughout the day.” —LAURIE LIPSEY ARONSON, president and CEO, Lipsey’s

“Millennials are a generation that want things now and on their terms. I am a boomer and think and plan for the longer term. I am not sure who is right; but it is a fact that my future staff and my clients will be millennials (and later generations). My firm is continuously trying to exploit the values and benefits of both perspectives.” —BUDDY RAGLAND, principal, Coleman Partners Architects

Does quality of life matter? Baton Rouge officials have been talking for nearly two decades about the region’s quality of life and its role in the region’s ability to attract and retain young, educated workers. The challenge has been building on the Capital Region’s strengths—strong family dynamics, friendliness, food, and some of the best hunting and fishing in the world—while also providing at least some of the other attributes desired by younger workers willing to travel to find what they want. So how has Baton Rouge done? Based on our executive feedback it’s a mixed bag.

“Baton Rouge has come a long way. I have been here my entire life and the changes are unbelievable. Others, no doubt, see things much differently than I do, so we need to keep trying to lift everyone up so they can have the time and money to appreciate the quality of life here.” —A.E. KAISER III, president, Acme Refrigeration of Baton Rouge

“Louisiana, as a whole, is lagging in entertainment options when compared to major cities like Dallas, Houston or Austin. However, the familyoriented community and friendly atmosphere are our marketable assets.”

—TUPAC DE LA CRUZ, founder and operations manager, Roofing Solutions

“Yes, it’s huge. As a community we are competing at every level globally whether we like it or not. Investing in education, and improving our sense of place is our best—and maybe only—way to compete. Admittedly, these are long term, complex goals. And in my opinion, we aren’t doing very well as a community demanding improvement in either area…. Traffic, poverty, urban sprawl, under educated population, poor health are all symptoms driven by an undereducated population that shows little care for our sense of place. It’s a circular problem.” —BUDDY RAGLAND, principal, Coleman Partners Architects

ADVICE FOR THAT YOUNG BUSINESS PERSON OR ENTREPRENEUR “Your personal faith journey and your career should always be in alignment. Do not be afraid to take the least-travelled path and be prepared to fight for with what you believe. If you have no faith, you will end up with all the money but no family or employees that respect you and you will live an empty life.”

—DANIEL KAIS, president, Sigma Engineers and Constructors Inc.

“Make connections and network early in your career. You never know when paths will cross again—the industrial community is surprisingly small. Cultivating relationships with your colleagues, peers and clients is invaluable. You’ll be amazed by the things you learn from staying engaged with your teammates.” —WILL KISER, vice president of operations, Hargrove and Associates

O N B E I N G A LEAD E R

What is the most pressing issue facing Baton Rouge? Traffic, crime, education, community relations and a lack of leadership were nearuniversal answers given by our executive panel. In other words, they’re view is no different from the rest of Baton Rouge. Yet this quote summarizes the view best:

“Lack of leadership and quality of elected officials. If we had even good leadership, we could fix our education and infrastructure issues. People would follow and trust a good leader. Few high-caliber candidates want the job or can win an election. All we can do is recruit the best talent available and support them. The business community has only had limited success (bringing about change) in recent years.” —ANDY DUPUY, CEO, Brown & Root Industrial Services

What I wanted to be when I grew up… No doubt, the leaders of Baton Rouge Top 100 private companies are successful, but that doesn’t mean the job they have today is what they envisioned coming out of high school or college.

“I was in wildlife management and thought I wanted to save the environment until figuring out that I may have to go to school for 10-12 years. I switched majors to get out of college so I could get a paycheck. I was tired of working in bars during school.”

“Before graduating from Emory, I got an interview with Universal Studios in Orlando— prior to it opening. I was given an opportunity to move there, but I met my (future) husband and decided to stay in Atlanta.” —LAURIE LIPSEY ARONSON, president and CEO, Lipsey’s

—TREY BEALL, president, Gulf Coast Office Products

“I wanted to pursue a career in ARCHEOLOGY, but there was no real opportunity to make a good living in Baton Rouge. Now one of my hobbies is amateur archeology.”

“I wanted to be an FBI agent, but when I finished college the agency was only accepting lawyers.” —ERNEST SEALS, president, Franklin Press

—ANDY DUPUY, CEO, Brown & Root Industrial Services

“I’ll be honest, as a senior in college I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do when I grew up!”

—DAVID BONDY, founder and CEO, LUBA Casualty Insurance Company
