How the list comes together IN THE SPRING, Business Report sent announcements and emails to all companies on our recent Top 100 lists as well as to those identified as possible qualifiers and those suggested by readers. We also placed notices on our websites, asking companies to post their information or submit it to us. We followed up with emails, phone calls and research to confirm the data. In some cases we looked at related industry performance reports and other business compilations to estimate revenue. Some companies declined to reveal their numbers, so we relied on public information and sources to make reasonable estimates. Those companies are denoted in the list’s footnotes. Companies were ranked according to their reported or estimated revenue for the most recently completed fiscal year, which in most cases was the calendar year 2016. We thank all the participating Top 100 companies in preparing this year’s list.

WHAT BEGAN WITH one Baton Rouge store in 1978 has grown into one of the largest independent jewelry stores in the country. Founded by Lee Michael Berg and his wife, Brenda—and now run by his three sons, Scott, Ryan and Chad—Lee Michaels and its signature red box accented with a black ribbon and bow has become the symbol for fine jewelry in the Baton Rouge community. Over the past 35-plus years, the company has expanded into New Orleans, Lafayette, Shreveport, Jackson, Mississippi, and San Antonio. In recent years, Lee Michaels has been reinvesting in its existing markets, relocating or remodeling seven of the company’s eight stores. The returns have paid off, with the company posting $54.6 million in revenues in 2016, up slightly from the previous year and good enough to move up three spots to No. 76 on this year’s Top 100 list. THE FLAVOR MAY say it all, but it’s dialect is a combination of Sicilian and Cajun influences created in 1947 by brothers Vincent, John and Bennie Manda. Starting what was then called the Manda Brothers Provisions Company, the three sold flavored smoked sausages, andouille, boudin, hog head cheese and deli meats. Today, Manda Fine Meats is owned and operated by three of Vincent Manda’s grandsons, with Bobby Yarborough serving as the company’s CEO since 1997. Under Yarborough’s leadership, the Manda family business has expanded and thrived. Today, the company has some 175 employees and its products are sold in 15 states. While its core market remains along the Gulf Coast, company officials say they are looking to further expand their market presence. Though 2016 was a down year in terms of revenue, slipping 3.9% to $43.9 million, Manda has posted steady gains in recent years. DEMCO DEMCO, WHICH began as a nonprofit membership corporation in 1938 serving some 750 members in three parishes, has grown to become the largest electric cooperative in the state, providing power for 102,000 members in seven southeast Louisiana parishes— Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and East and West Feliciana. Being one of the nation’s fastest growing cooperatives doesn’t come without its challenges—especially from Mother Nature. Twice in the past five years, including last summer’s record-setting flood, severe weather left wide swaths of its customers without power, forcing repair crews into dangerous action. Corporate growth is evident on the bottom line, with DEMCO posting $207.3 million in revenue in 2016, up slightly from the previous year, and enough to move the company up one spot to No. 26 on this year’s Top 100 list. A father-and-son team, Emerson and Ralph Singletary, opened the supermarket in 1984, and in 2000 it was acquired by another father-and-son duo, Elmore and Ronnie Trosclair. Today the supermarket is owned and operated by Ronnie Trosclair and his sons. At its height, Ralph’s had four locations: The two still operating in Gonzales, another at Jones Creek and a fourth in St. Tammany Parish.

This Baton Rouge-based construction company has been on the brink of Top 100 since 2014 when it ranked No. 105, with nearly $27 million in revenue. Stuart & Company General Contractors got its start in 2003 with CEO and President Christopher Stuart at the helm. Among the company’s notable construction projects are Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge, the Westside LTC College Campus, Fairwood Branch Library, and the fire stations in Port Allen and Prairieville.

The company has a 20-year history with clients including ExxonMobil, Motiva, Shell, Marathon and Honeywell.

Established in 1978, architecture and engineering firm CSRS has become a leader in the delivery of public and private infrastructure projects, including Baton Rouge’s Green Light Plan and the Nicholson Gateway project. In 2016, Tim Barfield was named president of CSRS, succeeding founding member Michael Songy. Revenues were up 6% from 2015 to 2016.
