In the year and a half since it came out, the iPhone 4s specs have been beaten by Android “superphones” in nearly every way: Screen size, processor power, and wireless Internet speeds. But while most of the reasons why someone might want an iPhone were hard to explain using numbers, one of them wasn’t: battery life. Because while the iPhone 4 boasted 6 hours of web-browsing time, the HTC Thunderbolt — one of the super-est of the superphones – clocked in at roughly two and a half. Despite increasing in performance, the new iPhone 4S also managed to improve on the battery life. Here’s how Apple manages it:

Smaller size An enormous (but vibrant) AMOLED display, like on Google and Samsung’s Nexus S, uses an enormous amount of power. And Android smartphone screens have reached up into the 5-inch range (on the Samsung Galaxy Note) and beyond: The original 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab was technically able to make phone calls. The iPhone, in contrast, has stayed at the same 3.5 inch screen size since its creation, which is also one of the reasons it’s able to offer Retina Display capability.
The iPhone 4S now offers HSPA+ “4G” wireless Internet speeds, which — as one of the slides in Apple’s presentation showed — are equivalent to those of some HSPA+ 4G Android superphones. It doesn’t use a much faster 4G LTE connection, though, and those connections are among the big reasons why Android superphones have terrible battery life. Moreover, as Anand Lal Shimpi of Anandtech explains, a 4G wireless radio means a bigger battery and bigger chassis … which also helps to explain Android superphones’ big screens. Less RAM RAM is different from the flash memory used as storage by the iPhone 4S and other smartphones. Like on a desktop or laptop computer, it’s the iPhone’s short-term memory: The programs it’s currently running (and the websites that it has open) are all

loaded into RAM, so that it can switch back and forth between them more quickly. It’s like keeping something foremost in your mind, instead of having to take a moment to remember it. The problem is, in exchange for being faster RAMuses more battery power. And RAM has to be turned on all the time, in essence, so a device that has more RAM also has lower battery life. The iPhone 4S has the same 512 MB of RAM that the iPhone 4 does, while Android super phones have up to 1 GB (1024 MB). Just like with 4G LTE connection speeds, this makes them much faster … and makes them burn out much faster as well.
