Serving the Battlefords since 1908

Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill has been found violation of the Members’ Conflict of Interest Act in connection to his association with Fortress Windows and Doors.

In a ruling from Conflict of Interest Commissioner Maurice Herauf issued this week, it was found Cockrill violated s.15(5) of the Act through his involvement with Fortress Windows and Doors from June 23, 2021

to December 14, 2021.

In his ruling Herauf stated Cockrill “has an interest” in Fortress within the meaning on a.15(3) of the Act due to Fortress being owned by his in-laws, and that he has participated in government contracts Fortress had with Battlefords Housing Authority and SaskTel. He also determined Cockrill did not come into compliance in the 90-day time period from March 22, 2021 to June 22, 2021. Herauf also recommended that the only penalty imposed on Cock-

rill be a reprimand. He pointed out that Cockrill acted appropriately and sought the advice of his office on disclosure, but no specific advice was sought or provided to him respecting his continued employment at Fortress. Herauf also pointed out that he did not consider Cockrill’s breach of the Act to have been intentional or deliberate.

In a separate ruling Herauf did not find Cockrill in violation over shares he held in Helium Evolution or Royal Helium.

The holidays are a joyous occasion to many families, but families in crisis will be facing different circumstances this Christmas season.

Debbie Kovalsky, executive director of Battlefords Interval House, wants to remind women who are dealing with abuse at home that they can always contact the Battlefords Interval House if they need to escape a violent situation during the holidays, just like other times in the year.

“Anybody who has experienced interpersonal violence, intimate partner violence, can give us a call. [Victims of] intimate partner violence are who we’re serving,” she said.

The non-profit organiza-

tion offers single women and women with children housing at its location in North Battleford. The facility has the capacity to accommodate 19 residents. It has both family rooms and single rooms.

“We do have two sin-

gle rooms and four family rooms,” Kovalsky said. “If we have larger families, they take up more than one room.”

Battlefords Interval House offers a 24-hour emergency safe shelter and support for women and those with ac-

companying children leaving circumstances of violence and abuse.

Kovalsky noted while calls are usually high during the Christmas season, in the weeks leading up to the holidays, numbers have actually tapered off a bit this year.

“Our calls have been reduced this year compared to other years,” Kovalsky said.

“But I don’t believe that’s because the domestic violence or interpersonal violence is actually improving. I think there’s other factors that maybe have causing the numbers to be a little bit lower right now, because I do believe that once the holidays start, we’ll find our numbers climb back up. You know, a lot of festivities occur, and that’s when a lot of things can happen.”

She related that sometimes over the holidays, families get together, and a lot of people mix in some substance use, and that can cause some of the issues to intensify. Financial tensions are another reason violence can increase closer to the holidays.

“[We] usually get busy so that all the beds are full around Christmas,” Kovalsky said.

Crime statistics shared by Saskatchewan RCMP earlier this year indicate that calls for police service to intimate partner and family violence incidents have increased by 13 per cent over the past five years across the jurisdiction, with regional increases of 19 per cent in the Central District, 14 per cent in the North

Town of Battleford welcomes newly elected council

Garden enthusiast will be missed by Battleford residents

Sympathy goes out to Elaine Poirier and family on the passing of 91-year-old Henri Poirier on Nov. 25. Henri and his wife Elaine had done a lot of planting to fill garden plots with bedding plants each year. They also had done the big planter pots on Battleford’s main street. They watered and cared for them all summer and had done the fall clean-up. When Henri was able to operate a lawn mower, he spent a lot of time mowing many grassy areas in the Battlefords near Battl-

West Place. Henri and Elaine lived in Battleford West Place for a few years. Due to ill health, he moved into a senior home in North Battleford where he passed away. The funeral was held on Dec. 2 at St. Vital Church in Battleford. Interment was at the Town of Battleford Cemetery. A reception was held at St. Vital Hall after the funeral.

Old man winter did come in full force with well below temperatures for a few days to mild up later. Dress warmly and make sure you don’t forget to plug in your vehicle for easy starting. Just take care, there are slippery

areas on the streets and highways. The highway department have been kept busy fixing up the highways and slippery areas.

My husband Stanley and I wish one and all a very Merry Christmas and New Year to come.

I have enjoyed doing all the news write-ups on the Baljennie area for over 40 years. Many thanks to all those who have helped me with some news items. Merry Christmas to all my readers.

The holiday season and Christmas season have come in fast. It’s time to get started early on all your

celebrations. The custom of of sending Christmas cards originated in England in 1843, where the first known Christmas cards were designed by John Calcott Horsley. It has been carried on all through the years. Even in the past few years, Christmas cards have been given. With a postal strike on, there will be fewer cards sent. May this season be a time of friendship, cheer, and memories that last throughout the New Year. May your home be filled with the warmth of Christmas and the best wishes for your happiness in the New Year. Happy and Merry Christmas to all.

Battlefords Interval House offers support to women in crisis during holidays

Continued from page 1 District, and seven per cent in South District over the same period.

Battlefords Interval House provided safe housing to 63 women and 66 children in 2023. It also supported 1,542 women seeking help through crisis calls to the shelter.

While staying in the shelter, women in crisis receive safe accommodations, food and clothing, and emotional support, advocacy support and education.

Donations needed

Women and families residing at Battlefords Interval House will be able to enjoy a quiet Christmas this year, with a hot meal to celebrate the holidays.

“We always host a Christmas dinner at Christmas, for sure,” Kovalsky said.

“There’s a very generous couple in our community who come as Miss Santa and Mrs. Claus every Christmas Eve and bring gifts for the families that are in here, and spend some time with the children. That’s always a real pleasure to have them. They’re so generous to do that out of their goodness of their heart. So we appreciate that... We have activities for the kids to do all the time, and also with grants from the Town of Battleford and from the City of North Battleford, the Sask Lotteries Grants gave us swim passes, so clients can go swimming as well at any time that they would like to go.”

Interval House encourages people to donate needed supplies to help women and children staying at the shelter.

“[Donations] have decreased this year because of the Canada Post strike,” Kovalsky said. “There’s many people who give to us every December. So we know who these people are, because it’s every December. Of course, we’re missing those donations this year just because of the strike. It’s unsure whether we’ll see them after the strike or not, but you know, we’re hopeful that they won’t forget us even after the strike.”

People in the community can donate to the women’s shelter to show their support.

Christmas stocking stuffers, like shampoo, body wash and lip balm for example, are good gift ideas. They can also give pyjamas for women, children and youth sizes, sweat pants,

Town of Battleford held its official swearing-in ceremony for the new council Monday night, following the election on Nov. 13 and the vote recount on Dec. 11.

“It was a long day coming,” Mayor Ames Leslie said of the swearing-in ceremony, following council.

“We had initially planned this almost a month ago now. It’s good to finally have the council-elect in place and get down to business, and try and make up for the lost month. It was an imperative time to spend on the budget, and now we are going to catch up.”

Two new councillors–Mark Coleman and Clayton Lazar–are joining the elected incumbents, and Leslie who was acclaimed as mayor, for the new council, and are learning more about their duties on council to familiarize themselves.

“Unfortunately, part of the onboarding [training] piece before this meeting never happened because we had the recount,” Leslie said. “So, they are going to have a compressed onboarding time because we need to get budgets done and budget approved by the turn of the calendar, or shortly thereafter. Tonight, in the last seven

years, we would have been approving budget [for 2025], and we haven’t even started discussing budgets yet.”

He said the new councillors will be learning about the process of council on the job as a result.

“We’ll definitely have some one-off discussions to onboard them, and answer some questions, and catch them up to speed on the policies and the code of ethics, and the expectations of them. But they are definitely going to learn in a compressed time than what we had hoped.”

New councillor Clayton Lazar narrowly defeated incumbent David George by one vote, both in the Nov. 13 election, and the recount on Dec. 11 as requested by George because of the extremely tight race for the seat.

Following council’s meeting Monday, Lazar said he was glad the recount took place.

“It just proved that our system worked,” he said. “And, David was really good about it. David is a neighbour of mine, so he and I had a good chat at the initial court hearing that got adjourned. David has always been a good person and a good friend of mine, and I just want to thank him for his service, and I did that day.”

running shoes, and winter boots and jackets, as well as sheets, blankets and towels, and pillows. Gift cards are also appreciated.

People can also make a monetary donation.

“If anybody is struggling at all in a situation, please call,” noted Kovalsky. “That’s why we’re here. We can certainly help them figure out what they would like to do, either moving forward or if they just need the break from the situation. Either way, we’re here for them and anybody else who maybe is wondering about somebody’s safety or their neighbour, or a friend. If you’re unsure, we have great resource on our website. Things that you can be watching for and how you can help or call as well.”

Numero Fifty-One

Ostensibly Mr. Trump was in Paris for the opening and rededication of Notre Dame cathedral now largely restored to its former beauty and magnificence. In truth however, he was there to have a quick meeting with Prince William about his suggestion to add Canada to his collection of states i.e. numero 51. No doubt William said that he would have to discuss this with Papa and that he would get back to him. I am sure that this not entirely new thought and the budget fiasco will dominate

your post-Christmas rotisserie relaxation calmed by GST free low-cal mulled wine. Two major considerations will determine how this takeover could come to fruition.

The first suggestion is to divide this country into desirable and less desirable areas. No doubt Mr. Trump will want the best bits while we will be stuck with the likes of Saskatchewan (too difficult

to spell) and Quebec. The bits he doesn’t want could be auctioned off – imagine the language problems in Quebec if China took over.

No, Canada should be kept whole, and America is the only country realistically able to achieve this. Unfortunately, they will have to buy us out as simple annexation is out of the question because of our parlous economic situation. The opening bid would have to be at least equivalent to our national debt which would leave us debt free and without the annual debt service charge. Think how appealing this suggestion would be to Mr. Trump at this time.

His tariff threat has already substantially reduced the Canadian dollar value and even higher tariffs will reduce its value more – a 50-cent exchange rate would be very attractive to Mr. Trump as the cost of buying Canada would be an irresistible deal.

We now turn to the Fall Economic Statement set to be cunningly delivered on December 16th. i.e. the day before Parliament goes into recess for five weeks thus precluding debate. Unable to face up to a 51% debt excess in her promised “guardrail” budget, Chrystia chose to resign after the Prime Minister offered her a different

Gordon

cabinet position – remember Jody Wilson Raybould. Mr. Trudeau was not present when the document was tabled in the House on Monday afternoon. He was with the Governor General at Rideau Hall having his childhood babysitter Dominic LeBlanc sworn in as the new Finance Minister. This was followed by immediate calls for his resignation. This country is in financial and political chaos. I blame our elected representatives who have allowed this clearly unqualified charismatic incompetent Prime Minister more or less free rein for nearly ten years. Monday’s Cloverdale/

Langley B.C. by-election resounding Conservative win is another nail in the Liberal party coffin. We lived through many strikes in Britain. I always felt sorry for strikers driven to withdraw their labour and receive no wages. Many took ten years or more to recoup their financial losses. The current mail strike has caused hardship but imagine the mess this country would be in if the dock and rail strikes had not been settled by government intervention. In this case the Labour Relations Board has stepped in, not the government. This has silenced Mr. Singh.

One year at new location for post office

Community hub includes post office, library, community centre and village office

Sometimes we take things for granted since they’ve evolved. Meota is no exception, but anniversaries are worth celebrating.

Meota’s post office is already celebrating its oneyear anniversary of the new location. The Village of Meota stepped up to facilitate the move. There are 340 boxes that residents can access with their keys. It’s open for Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. with the lobby open 24/7 so residents can access their boxes anytime. Even during the Canada Post strike our post office was open. Postmaster Pam Ray is not in the same union as the postal workers so she’s still at work every day, with little to do. I happened to connect with her and we discussed the overall impact a post office has on a town or village.

The post office is in many ways the hub of the community. Meota was lucky to have had a location that fit the bill. Not only is there a spacious lobby with a window, dropbox and a wicket, but there’s also an equally spacious workroom in the back. It’s organized, bright, safe and clean for the postmaster to work in and the public to access. It’s in a convenient location, wheelchair accessible and has ample parking. Hopefully, the postal strike will end soon, and our post office will resume its key role in our community.

Meota’s library is right next door. Librarian Brenda Zurowski keeps our library open at times that are most suited to residents. It’s closed Sundays, Mondays and Fridays, but she’s there four other days of the week. Check out the poster on the door for the hours. I’ve enjoyed being able to select a book that’s available locally, but I also really appreciate the fact that Brenda will find and bring in whatever book you’re interested in reading. There’s a great selection of children’s books, which is invaluable in a growing family. Every time I take out a book it tells me how much I’ve saved by not having to buy the book.

The Village Office is also in the hub. Kim Frolek, Meota’s chief administrative officer is so efficient that for December, she has been able to scale back office hours to Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. The Village of Meota has a website which can be referred to anytime you need information on anything from businesses to hall rentals. The hall hosts any number of special events as well as day-to-day events. Whether that be Walk Walk,

adult co-ed pickleball or craft sales. The Market on Saturday was a great example of community involvement that everyone can enjoy.

The Meota Lake Shore Lions Club has their Lions Den at the Community Complex. (They are presently sharing their space with a group of ladies who like to quilt.) The Lions are a huge asset to the community. They are instrumental in raising funds for almost any endeavour that

the community needs support for. They’ve put on a ham and turkey bingo on Monday evening. Timing couldn’t be more perfect, because some lucky individuals were able to win their Christmas dinner.

Last but not least is Meota’s best-kept secret. It’s the Meota’s Fitness Centre. Not every village has a fitness centre and that’s part of why Meota is exceptional.

Meota and District Recre-

ation Association (ADRA) organize community events and programs. I have touched base with them and it’s been decided that we will be doing a separate article on ADRA

and especially the fitness centre. Outdoor winter activities are in full swing. The rink is flooded, the cross-country ski trail is cleared and the

first ice fishing shacks have appeared. Curling is in full swing and if you are brave enough you can slide down the embankment at Memorial Hill.

Curling News

A new chapter has begun in the long and storied history of the Meota Grand Slam of Curling, where each game tells a story , each more impressive than the last.

The 2024-2025 season officially kicked off Tuesday night with the customary first stone of the season cast by the reigning Silver Broom winning Kirsten Bru rink. No easy test to get back into the groove as Bru was against fan favorite, recently acclaimed councilor of Turtle River and voice of Langemeade, Zane Lacousiere. Lacousiere got the early jump scoring 3 in the first three ends , but it was all Bru after that scoring 10 unanswered to win 10-3 in 7 ends.

Game of the week was Gil Cadrin and Don Johnson in the late draw Tuesday which came down to the final throw

in a back and forth affair.

With Johnson leading 7-4 heading into the final frame , curling club patrons started to the exit to get a head start on traffic. Those that stayed beared witness to the new reeve’s comeback resulting in a 3 point score to tie the game with a soft takeout and stick.

After being eliminated from the Silver Broom championship last year to the hands of the Caleb Gansauge team , Colin Sharp and company avenged last season’s loss with a shutout win.

It was 5-3 up until the 6th end before Derek Welford scored 4 points to win 9-3 over Randy Iverson on Tuesday night in their season opening matchup.

Haunted by years of early Silver Broom exits, the Evan Schmidt team is back with notable and experienced curler Scott Shephard, whose winning pedigree will hope-

fully be enough to convert their regular season success into playoff achievements. Appears to be some early season chemistry , as Schmidt doubled up on Pat Becotte 12-6 in a game where no end had less then 3 points scored. It was quite the contrary in the Randy Sharp and Wanda Weber matchup where Sharp took a slow and meticulous approach scoring 7 singles to win 7-2 in an 8 end game. Fans and curling media will have to wait till next week to see Dale Johnson’s new and improved hip in action. Doctor’s touted the off season surgery a success and prognosticate immediate improvements on his out turn take outs. Unfortunately a last minute game postponement will keep the suspense brewing for another week as the Pat Mohr and Colin Mack rinks will have to meet another time.
