CHEER LEGACY ATHLETICS: From North Battleford to the World
By Chris L. Istace Since 2012, Cheer Legacy Athletics has been providing youth in The Battlefords region an opportunity to participate in one of the country’s fastest growing sports. Back then, seven kids signed on for cheerleading lessons, combining the athleticism of gymnastics and acrobatics with the performance aspect and musical expression of dance. They practiced in the mezzanine of the North Battleford Civic Centre. Almost six years later, owner and head coach Lesia Rathje has opened a standalone facility custom built to fit their needs. The business moved into the 771 109th Street location in July. There are currently about 100 cheerleaders in the competitive program alongside approximately 50 in other programming, such as their famous Parkour program. “We are the fastest growing minor sports organization in The Battlefords and one of the main reasons this is possible is because of the on-going investments back into the program over the past six years. Everything from new equipment, coaches training and of course our brand new facility.” said Rathje. Cheer Legacy Athletics currently hosts nine coaches
and eight junior coaches. While the junior coaches are current members of older teams aged 11 to 14 years, the main instructors have deep knowledge and experience in cheerleading. “All of our staff are not only fully certified in our sport, but they have all been in the sport for years themselves. Our staff has over 50 years of combined experience in the sport and this year, 88 per cent of our staff is on our Worlds team,” said Rathje, who has 13 years of experience herself, beginning when she was a teenager in Saskatoon. She is a Level 5 certified coach through the Saskatchewan Cheerleading Association as well as through the International Cheer Union. Cheer Legacy Athletics Level 5 team, Dynasty, is attempting to qualify for The Cheerleading Worlds scheduled for April of 2018 in Orlando, Fla. Leading up to Worlds, they will compete at multiple events throughout Canada to earn a bid to the championship. “We have a group of 15 athletes that are working toward receiving a bid to the Worlds in Orlando,” said Rathje. “If we do receive a bid (for the Worlds), we would be the first minor youth sports organization from the North Battleford re-
gion to have a team compete at the international level.” Cheer Legacy Athletics provides training at all five levels that the sport offers, which incorporates stunting, dance and tumbling. They also offer camps, day programming, parkour, birthday parties and other services. Confidence and comfort to meet your needs By Chris L. Istace At Battlefords Hearing Centers, assessing and improving your ability to hear is just part of the service. Every customer also gets an individualized relationship with an experienced hearing clinician; someone with whom you can develop a friendly rapport, ensuring they meet all of your needs in a comfortable, neighborly atmosphere. “This is so important because hearing loss is a type of disability that can be embarrassing to some people. It seems okay to get glasses. People get glasses all the time and upgrade them like they’re getting a new pair of shoes. Hearing loss is something you can’t see and it has some stigma to it,” said Battlefords Hearing clinician and owner Chantelle Emery. “When someone has a hearing issue, I can understand those issues and help them overcome them. It’s important to gain the trust of the client because if they can’t trust you, they’re not going to trust the service you can provide for them.” Emery is a former resident of Swift Current, Sask., where she owns an established hearing clinic. She saw a need for hearing services in North Battleford and opened Battlefords Hearing Center in April of 2015, bringing with her experience in special education, American sign language, deaf studies, hearing loss, client rehabilitation, counselling and audiology studies following six years of post secondary training. Emery also provides earwax removal services using four methods of treatment and has worked with a variety of clients with special needs. Her past social
service work with 13 years of experience in the medical sector has developed her abilities to help people requiring behavioural therapy, augmentative communication, multiple disorders, dementia and other cognitive disabling diagnoses. The company has seen immense growth over the past two and a half years. Emery is seeing between two and six new patients per day and saw business explode by more than 300 per cent after she moved to the city last year. Members of the area’s business community and The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce noticed. Battlefords Hearing Centers was a finalist for 2017’s Best New Business BBEX Award, which Emery considers a great honor and huge accomplishment. “Normally, a hearing clinic wouldn’t get that kind of acknowledgement because most people don’t want to go to a hearing clinic and there’s a negative connotation with hearing loss,” she said. “I turned 30 this year, so I’m young and established. It’s been great working in North Battleford because the opportunity for growth here is so huge.” Battlefords Hearing Centers has an extensive history in the hearing clinic industry through an association with Swift Hearing Centers, which has been operating at various locations throughout western and southern Saskatchewan for three decades. Besides North Battleford, the local operation has satellite clinics in Meadow Lake and Unity. “It’s been amazing how we’ve been seeing so many clients. This motivated me to initiate clinics in

Meadow Lake and Unity, where I go twice a month. We’re fully booked each time,” Emery said, adding that a second clinician is currently in training and working reception at the company, which will allow for further growth. Swift Hearing Centers also has ties to Swift Current, Shaunavon, Assiniboia, Herbert, Leader, Maple Creek and Gravelbourg. This history and affiliation with other facilities allows Battlefords Hearing Centers to provide extensive knowledge of hearing aids and assistive listening devices. They will know what type of product you will require for your specific needs and what manufacturer provides the best options available. Battlefords Hearing Centers provides a wide array of products and services fitting each client’s individual needs. Their services include affordable hearing evaluations and consultations; everyday listening products; advanced hearing aid technology for every lifestyle and budget; a 60-day confidence guarantee; a hearing aid rental/lease program; financing and payment plans; services for BAC, NIHB and WCB/ WSIB clients; lifetime batteries; hearing aid repairs and accessories and more. For more information on Battlefords Hearing Centers, or to book an appointment, call (833) 4455700 or email them at battlefordshearing@gmail. com. The company also has a website containing a thorough explanation of their products and services. It can be found at battlefordshearing.com.

306-445-4199 Serving the world for North Battleford By Chris L. Istace Since entering the local market in 2012, ILTA Grain’s North Battleford operation has become a key component in its chain of Saskatchewan and Manitoba locations. In early 2016, the company opened its administration and regional office just north of the city. The facility centralized ILTA’s grain buying, inland logistics, processing, safety training and other functions. It also included a new, onsite truck maintenance facility to service its fleet of tractors, Super B trailers and container trailers. The move came just a month after ILTA Grain announced its first shipment of railcars from an expanded rail plant near North Battleford. The company is now able to load and ship 50 cars at a time, opening the opportunity to secure more locally produced grains, pulse crops and oilseeds for world distribution. This expansion integrated cleaning and processing infrastructure that incorporates advanced techniques and equipment, further improving the quality of their product to the end user. “We have had tremendous growth through our facility expansions over the last couple of years. We have increased our volumes and quality of the products we produce to serve our customers’ growing needs,” said ILTA Grain’s processing
manager Ryan Haase. “The Battlefords has been instrumental in our success with a strong customer base, strong labor pool and exceptional access to trades and other goods and services in the area.” ILTA Grain exports grains to markets throughout the world. It specializes in pulse crops such as lentils, peas, beans and chickpeas, but also works in grains/oilseeds and other specialty crops. Outside of North Battleford, the company operates at six other locations, including Swift Current, Cutknife, Saskatoon and Regina, Sask., and Portage la Prairie and Miami, Man. ILTA has garnered special recognition for its North Battleford enterprise, where it currently employs about 45 people. The company was named 2017’s BBEX Business of the Year at the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce’s 24th annual Battlefords Business Excellence Awards gala in early October. “It was a great honor to accept the BBEX award and it’s a testament to the tireless work of our em-
ployees, tremendous support from the local growers and our overseas customers,” Haase said. ILTA Grains takes a hands-on approach to serving their clientele, from dealing with their suppliers on the farms to distributing those products around the world. The company prides itself on maintaining control through the entire route. After sourcing the grains, oilseeds and pulses from area producers, ILTA processes and cleans it on-site, then ships it to the customer, allowing them to protect their high standards for product and service during every step. “We have extensive experience in procuring and trading various grains and our experienced team understands global trade and logistics,” said Haase. “We have strong customer service at the grower and export levels.” For more information on ILTA Grain and the services they provide, visit their website at iltagrain. com. Fortress Windows and Doors is proud to announce the addition of new members to their sales team. Jeremy Cockrill has come on board in a sales and customer service role. Cockrill arrived from British Columbia last April, shortly after the departure of long-time Fortress employee Andy Benson, and is excited about the opportunities that The Battlefords have to offer. Long-time Fortress team member Adam Voeltz has been promoted to a sales and customer service role. Voeltz has more than 20 years experience in the window manufacturing division of Fortress and has extensive technical knowledge of the product lines. Sheena Connolly also joined Fortress in early 2017 and provides customer service over the phone and in person at the company’s showroom. The leadership remains the same, however. Kevin Driedger is the owner and president of the company. “Even though there are new faces, the heart of Fortress has not changed,” said Driedger. “The professional and knowledgeable manufacturing and installation teams continue to build products and find solutions for customers. Fortress remains committed to doing business honestly, offering products that make homes more comfortable and exceed customer expectations.” These deeply engrained characteristics have helped the business maintain a consistent presence in The Battlefords for almost five decades, previously under the banner of Alumi-Glass. Fortress Windows and Doors – located at 2492 98th Street – provides customers locally-made products that meet the highest standards set out for Saskatchewan’s wide-ranging weather conditions. Fortress windows use Canadian-made PVC and glass developed for the Canadian Prairie climate. Built right in North Battleford, the windows meet strict quality controls and are regularly audited by the independent organization, QAI Laboratories, to ensure the manufacturing processes meet Energy Star standards. Fortress-made entrance doors are prefinished and come with a Polytex coating, eliminating the
need for paint and extensive maintenance. The door slabs are filled with high R-value polyurethane foam insulation and there are a wide selection of panels and glass inserts to meet your own individual taste. Every Fortress-made door is hung inside strong frames that are wrapped with an Ektacron vinyl finish. Backing up the product and service are 17 employees, many with a long association with Fortress. The team has been one of the key factors in the company’s success through the years. “We have a committed team that takes quality seriously and is focused on satisfying every customer,” said Cockrill. We take details very seriously. When dealing with renovations – specifically in our case; windows and doors – eighths and sixteenths of an inch can make a difference. It may be cheaper to order windows from a hardware store or large supplier, but there is no replacement for a professional coming to your home, seeking to understand your needs and your budget, then making a recommendation based on each customer’s unique situation.” Representatives from Fortress Windows and Doors can be contacted at (306) 445-8867 or via email at sales@fortresswindows.ca. The company also has a growing online presence with their website, fortresswindows.ca. Here, customers can get an explanation of Fortress’s selection of products, an outline of warranty information and request a quote.
