By John Cairns SASKTODAY.ca Premier Scott Moe has announced a $500 affordability tax credit will go to all Saskatchewan residents over age 18 this fall.Moe announced the affordability measure in a video released on social media Monday afternoon. The premier said the province’s finances are improving much faster than expected due to higher resource prices, moving their budget position from a deficit to a surplus. That’s good news, said Premier Moe. But it “also means the cost of almost everything you buy has gone“Youup.”own the resources and you should benefit when those resource prices are high,” Moe said. “So, this fall we will be sending a $500 affordability tax credit cheque to everyone in Saskatchewan aged 18 and over, to help with those rising costs.” In a statement, NDP Finance Critic Trent Wotherspoon made it known he thought the government waited too late to make the announcement. “They should have offered this relief months ago as we’ve been calling for, in addition to scrapping their new taxes, utility increases and fee hikes,” Wotherspoon said. “While other provincial governments acted to provide affordability relief, the Sask. Party has waited until right before their byelection call. This money belongs to the people of Saskatchewan, not the Sask. Party. The Sask. Party will consistently put their political interests above the wellbeing of the people of Saskatchewan – as they have done with these ‘buy’– election bucks.”

The evening’s guest speaker was Professor Dwayne Brenna of Saska toon, author of Long Way Home.Guests coming from furthest away were the family of Nat Bates, one of the last surviving members of the Indian Head Rock ets, being inducted this year.Between the years 1947 and 1955, the small town of Indian Head held some of the largest baseball tour neys ever held in Canada. For most of those years the town was the home of the semi-professional Indian Head Rockets, brought north from the United States by mayor Jim Robi son. It is estimated that up to 500 Black players found their way up to Canada during the fifties, which for many meant higher pay and less prejudice on the part of the Canadian pub lic.In his acceptance speech, Bates acknowl edged the 37 years of work by Jane Shury and her late husband in organizing the hall of fame events. “It’s not easy putting on an affair like this. It takes a lot of work. With [Jane Shury] and our volunteers, this is a beautiful experi ence for all of us, especial ly the honourees. I think it’s appropriate to give Jane a standing ovation,” said Bates. He also acknowledged the Indian Head group of supporters who for two years had been in touch with him in reference to the upcoming induction event and the individuals who had been pushing for 10 years to have the Rock ers
“There’sinducted.more to base ball than the people play ing the games,” he said. Looking back, Bates said, “In the 1950s there was a lot of unrest, in America especially. Ra cial tension was quite high, especially in the southern states, and when we came up from California to Medicine Hat, initially, and then to Indian Head, I just want to express my appre ciation for each and every one of the Canadians.” He continued, “You see, I’m 91 years of age and most of you weren’t born when I was here at Indian Head. But the hospitality, the generosity and the re spect for all the Black play ers was unparalleled com pared to the United States. All of the Canadians were extremely polite and I just want to thank all of you; … from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful welcome and the apprecia tion that you gave all of us as baseball players coming to Canada.Theevening closed with a message from Shury who thanked the inductees for what they have contribut ed to Saskatchewan’s rich baseball“Therehistory.aremany teams and individuals out there who have contributed. That’s why the Saskatche wan Baseball Hall of Fame is here.”

This situation is now critical for all of us, and needs to be addressed urgently. We deserve much, much better. Keltie Paul The Battlefords By John Cairns SASKTODAY.ca For the past week, Canada has seen a collective freakout reaction to Lisa LaFlamme’s dismissal. CTV has been inundated with complaints from people accusing Bell executives of ageism, sexism, misogyny and worse over this decision. We are seeing stories about how LaFlamme was fired because she allowed her hair to go grey on air. We are now seeing stories about how this sends a terrible message to young women who want to go into journalism. Never mind that — it sends a terrible mes sage to men wanting to go into journalism, too, espe cially TV Honestly, news.ifwhat happened to LaFlamme discour ages people from pursuing this lousy, unstable, low-pay TV news career path for a living, and they decide to do something better with their lives, maybe this will have done them all a public service. Heck, there are already lots of stories about how there is a shortage of males going into TV news. It’s true, most males have finally seen the light and are refusing to go into the business, opting for more money and stable career paths which don’t involve the public humiliation LaFlamme endured last week. Maybe women might finally come to the same conclusion, too. I hope so, because it would serve management right. A career in “PR” looks pretty good right now. It seems like there are lots of places in Canada that could use good public relations people to do their crisis com munications for them. Such as Bell, for example. This whole mess that transpired this past week is a textbook case of how not to run a news organization, or your PR. Unfortunately, this purge of LaFlamme seems typical for TV news in this country. For the past several years we have seen countless instances of media talent in this country being shoved aside or shown the door. What happened to LaFlamme is callous, but there is nothing new about this. There have been many callous departures from various TV opera tions in the past few years, with conglomerates Rogers and Bell being the worst offenders. Rogers found a way to toss overboard such names as Gord Martineau at Citytv in Toronto, or Bob McCown at Prime Time Sports. (There was also Don Cherry, but that was kind of a different situation.) Global has also had purges of their own. I read about how anchor Jamie Orchard was canned at Global Mon treal, but at least she was given a chance to say goodbye to her viewers on the air, unlike LaFlamme. Lately, the true master of the media purges has been Bell. They have conducted plenty of local-level blood baths in recent years, tossing out Carol Anne Meehan at CTV Ottawa, tossing out weather guys Tom Brown and Anwar Knight at CTV Toronto, and most notoriously wiping out local sportscasts and sportscasters across the country.Lastyear, Bell went on their most notorious blood bath yet where they blew out their radio newsrooms in major cities, closed down three entire TSN all-sports radio stations, and canned high-profile talent at TSN including Dan O’Toole, Natasha Staniszewski and even tually parted ways with Rod Black. At some point, they even parted ways with Ben Mulroney. So, when I first heard that LaFlamme was out at CTV, I had a “surprised but not surprised” type of reac tion. After what happened to TSN last year, nothing could shock me any more. This seemed like just another typical stupid move that I have come to expect in “Tele vision Land.” My point here is that these purges have been com monplace. It has always produced a level of outrage from the public and claims from viewers that they will never watch again. Then people calm down, and we get used to the new personalities, only for these same companies to conduct more periodic purges every year or so. The sense now is that this particular axing went too far. This time, the target was way too high profile, it made far less business sense (anchor of the number one newscast in Canada), and the way this was handled came off as more cold-hearted than usual. LaFlamme deserved a dignified departure after all those years on the air. Instead, she announced her

The main controversy revolves around claims of a double standard, with lots of people pointing out that LaFlamme’s predecessor Lloyd Robertson got to stay on until he was 77 yearsWell, old.let’s talk about Lloyd for a moment. Back when Lloyd was doing the news, you didn’t have nearly the pressures on the Canadian media business that you do now. Back in the old days, if you wanted to get your news, you waited until 10 or 11 p.m. to watch Peter Mansbridge or Lloyd Robertson. Now all you need to do is look at your mobile device when you get a notification. That’s it. TV news is currently under existential threat from the internet and countless other competing news services, including streaming services. That’s part of why Robertson lasted as long as he did, because it wasn’t the same media environment. His nightly newscasts still had clout. But he had other prob lems to deal with. A cou ple of decades or so ago, Robertson had to fend off competition for his anchor job from Keith Morrison, who is now with NBC. I read the accounts from back in the day about how Morrison was supposed to be angling for Robertson’s job, and how Robertson had to go to the president of CTV to put a stop to all of this nonsense, resulting in Morrison being fired from CTV claimpromptedcontroversialCBC,“PrimewasdayhappenedMorrison’sNews.firingonthesamethatPamelaWallinfiredasco-anchorofTimeNews”onwhichwasalsoamovewhichpeopletoalso“sexism”andsoon.Anyway,palacein

A few weeks ago, a 46-inch-long semicompleted model cabin cruiser was left at our front door. This was the result of a chance conversation between Mr. Joe Fransoo of Meota and my wife who assured him that I was eminently capable of completing the model. Efforts to find its original owner have proved to no avail. After much consideration, I decided that it would be a travesty to attempt any work on it. The boat is very traditional in its format and structural design and it is my imagination that it was made by someone from the U.K. probably older in years with very skilled hands. To my mind, it is a piece of history and should remain untouched. For anyone interested in viewing it or laying claim to it, it is now in the heritage museum in Unity. In 2005, Frank Oatway, a retired farmer from the Unity area, completed an extensive list of oneroomed schools within a 40-mile radius. His list shows some 280 locations where today there are 140 markers. trigue has been part of the TV news business in this country for a long time. As we have seen, it has been equal opportunity palace intrigue. Women and men have been getting the knife pretty much in equal num bers as far as I can tell. But maybe now the pendulum has swung to the point where TV news anchors no longer carry the sort of sway they used to have back in Lloyd’s day. Staff Charity begins at home. The phrase translates to having one’s first responsi bility for the needs of one’s own family and friends. That’s no different for the Associated Canadian Trav ellersVolunteergroup.
Dament explains the ACT, an an acronym for Associated Canadian Trav ellers, is one of a number of non-profit local clubs that has a lottery licence and they work bingos at Car ousel Bingo to raise money for the community. Over at the Royal Ca nadian Legion Branch No. 70, similar sentiments are echoed to that of Ptol emy. The legion for many people of generations past played a central part of so cial and event life of the community.Yetlike many of the legions across the nation, today memberships are a fraction of what they were in the past and so too is the money. President Gordon Brown states the concern ing message, “It’s groups like this that help us stay in existence.”Anything brought into the legion is reinvested immediately back into the community. Whether it is through grants to schools, the Remembrance Day contest or working along side the army and air ca dets in town, it is a com munity working together to preserve its heritage while educating the youth and fu ture of the country. It’s that investment back into the local area that makes membership worth it for 15-year ACT member Don“ToDament.seeyoung people benefiting from our dona tions makes us feel great.”

Battlefords Art Club I attended a Plein Air workshop put on by the Chapel Gallery on Aug. 13. Thanks to Leah Garven for arranging this excel lent workshop with accom plished Saskatchewan art ist Grant McConnell. You can look him up online and view some of his works. It was my first Plein Air (painting outdoors) work shop. He gave us some valuable tips, a couple of demonstrations and indi vidual feedback. We painted with our own materials and were allowed to paint our own subject. We were on the Saskatchewan River’s north side and, therefore, had incredible landscapes to choose from. The pro cess was to establish our subject to paint, then do a preliminary sketch. I did an underpainting and then gave it a few more top coats. I chose to paint with watercolour and also high light with markers. Ninety per cent of my work was done outside, however, a few touch-ups were done at home. Some historical plein air painters spent time contemplating the landscape outdoors and then did all of their paint ingOurindoors.Western World is still hanging in the Cha pel Gallery featuring art created by Kathy Smith, Rosemarie Stadnyk, Grace Gerein, Lorraine Voegeli, and Jean Dunn. This week end, Aug. 26-28 at the Alex Dillabough Center in Bat tleford, Ev Gardiner and Pam Beaver will be dis playing and selling their art. Come out and support our local artists, everyone!

MeotaPaddleLakefrontandSail Submitted by Trudy Janssens — The late Lawrance Lassard would be pleased. In 1964 he had a vision. He sold the land on the water’s edge to the community so everyone could enjoy the experience of the lake. There are a few people in Meota who recall the high days of sailing from Meota. Dan Pollard recently described his experiences as a child watching literally hundreds of sailboats launch out of the Battlefords Sailing Club, which is now been rebranded as Meota Lakefront Paddle and Sail or MLPS. Jackfish Lake is suitable for recreational sailing. Lessons were offered and provincial regattas were hosted. Sailing is like life. Sometimes the wind goes out of your sails. There is no guarantee that there will even be a wind. Other times it will be so exciting that you can hardly hang on.Today there are many aspects to the experience that are being offered by Meota Lakefront Paddle and Sail. It’s gone from strictly sailing to all nonmotorized water sports. When I took over as com modore a previous member told me to take the organi zation in a new direction. He asked me what my vi sion was for the club. The answer to that has gradu ally been unfolding. First of all, the facility in Meota was in desperate need of some TLC. During CO VID lockdowns the entire property suffered from neglect. Last year the pro cess of addressing all sorts of building and grounds maintenance was started. Volunteers from Meota, North Battleford and sur

Kayakers were less inclined to go out on the water alone. As a re sult many new friendships whereEventsforged.were planned to promote stand up paddle boarding and kayaking. During those two events new people were drawn to all the activity on the beach. Tours were given and one-to-one promotion of all the advantages for members resulted in sever al new families signing up. As of August, MLPS has a total of 86 members when you include all the chil dren in the headcount. By becoming a member, all 86 members have insurance coverage for water sports at sanctioned events under the Saskatchewan Sailing Association.Sask.Sailing Asso ciation has also agreed to come to Meota the first week of July 2023 to teach sailing. Registrations for sailing lessons are already being accepted by Patrick Eckerman. man306@gmail.compatrickeckerSailboatsthathavebeen sitting idle for years are be ing brought back to life. I (at age 71) went out for my very first sail this week. Thankfully the winds were very light and my son even came out to “rescue” us from the calm waters. The new MLPS board include young members who have the skills to fa cilitate easier methods for registration and payment. MLPS now has an online membership application form. Fees can be e-trans ferred. A new website is being launched, where several members can keep it up, instead of having to rely on one webmaster. Photographs and notifica tions are being shared on Facebook, as well as di rect communications with members by text and email. It’s exciting to see so many from the community getting involved and hope fully soon more people who come to the regional park will be able to recognize the value of being a member. Kayak and SUP storage, use of the club’s equipment and use of the spacious grounds and clubhouse are all benefits that make the reasonable membership fee extremely attractive. Coffee row on Wednes day mornings at the Do Drop In continues to be popular as does the lineup of vehicles at the local café every morning. The golf course also is a busy place these warm days. The bridge players in the city had two and a half tables Thursday, with top score going to Vern Iverson and David Sharpe. Second were Catriona Winterholt and Donna Sherman. The Aug. 18 seniors’ golfing had 20 entrants taking part. There was a tie for first place between Ken Buchinski, Bernie Gregoire, Marcelle Duhaime and Juliette Tebay and the foursome of Terrance Desilva, Calvin Arnold, Annette Duhaime and Lynn Boucher. The latter team prevailed with a score of 37 after a count back. The consolation team with a respectable score of 44 was Dennis Tebay, Albert Huys, Elizabeth Buchinski and Janice Morton. Again, the Saskatchewan weather favoured them and they all had a good experience and pleasant social time together.Canasta was played at the Do Drop In on Friday, with four tables in play. Top score went to Vivianne Lesko and David Sayers. Second were Janice Morton and Vern Iverson and third were Linda Ard and Bob Lesko. The St. Walburg Blue berry Festival starts off Friday evening with their popular ethnic supper and old-time dance at the St. Walburg Parish Cen tre. Saturday starts out with their outdoor pan cake breakfast, followed by outdoors markets, live entertainment, show and shine display, blueberry pie treats at various sites, kids’ activities and ending the day with their famous dinner and talent night at the Elks Hall. They are selling advance tickets for this latter event. When I watch the big and small camper trail ers pass over those ‘speed bumps,’ I can imagine how they worry about the con tents inside. How benefi cial it would be to have an entry into the park from the corner by the golf course. No bumps whatever and no traffic hazards. I still think it would be better all around.Another concern I have seen unfolding is that golf carts and various other small motorized vehicles are not stopping at the stop signs. These signs are not designed with only cars in mind. Our streets also don’t seem big enough to take care of the various ve hicles that park right on the street so everyone else has to manage around them.

Joseph A. Sayers began with a small collection of items from his parents, some of which originated at the Red River Settlement. | Bresaylor Heritage Museum photos

Bresaylor Happenings Museum
After Joseph A. Sayers retired, he started a small collection of historic items from his parents. Some of the items had been brought to the Bresaylor settlement from the Red River settlement in 1882. Joe purchased the Alex Lennie house and opened a museum. He continued to collect many more artifacts donated by other Bresaylor families.Joebought the Pool ele vator agent’s house located across the street from the museum. During the sum mer when he ran the muse um, he lived in this house, which is now the museum office. Most days in the summer he could be found telling stories at the camp ground or giving a tour of the museum. He returned to British Columbia for the winterAroundmonths.this time, the Pool committee devel oped a campground in the schoolyard of the former Federal School. A monu ment, playground, well and other camping ameni ties were constructed. The campground was enjoyed by travellers and the local community. When the Pool committee disbanded, the campground was handed over to the museum board Velma Foster became curator of the museum in 1983 and spearheaded many museum projects.

founded by Joseph Sayers remains strong who ran it for a few years before closing it. Before he died in De cember 1982, Joe made known his wishes that the museum be turned over to a committee and run as a local project. A meeting was held on April 14, 1983, to organize the Bresaylor Museum Association to oversee and run the mu seum. Later that month on April 26, a history book committee was formed and the compiling of local his tory began. In 1992, the Bresaylor History Book was launched. The Lennie house was declared a heri tage building, and by 1985, after extensive renovations, the museum reopened to theThepublic.Bresaylor museum has been involved in a number of projects over the years. When the Pool committee disbanded, they also handed over the main tenance of the Bresaylor cemetery to the museum. The board compiled re cords of unmarked graves and constructed a sign with names of the people buried at the cemetery. The up keep of the cemetery was later turned over to the RM of Paynton.Inthemid 1980s, an oat crop project was started on a plot of land just west of the museum. Oats were planted in the spring us ing antique equipment, then harvested in the fall with a binder, horse-drawn wagons and threshing ma chines. This continued un til well into the 1990s. Every year the quilting group makes a quilt which is raffled off at the annual potluck. The museum’s latest project was started last summer when photographs were taken of 200 of our 2,500 artifacts, with plans to create a virtual museum. Over the years, nu merous volunteers have worked on the museum’s projects. Although there are too many names to mention in this article, one individual I would like to mention is Velma Foster. Velma became curator of the museum in 1983 and has spearheaded the many museum projects. Using her artistic talent, she has kept the displays well or ganized over the years and researched a lot of material in the Bresaylor History Book. Velma was also in strumental in starting an annual newsletter for mu seum patrons. In 2021, she received a well-deserved volunteer recognition award from Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation in the cul ture-historical preservation category. Without her dedi cation, the museum would notTheexist.Bresaylor Heritage Museum is open by ap pointment only until Aug. 31. Please phone Enola at 306-893-8002 or Bob at 306-895-2075 to arrange a guided tour by one of our volunteer staff. Check out the Bresaylor Heritage Mu seum Facebook page for more information.

Close to 40 people travelled in vehicles to visit the many sites that had been staked out and followed a map and tour write-up.Toured was the Tom bowka Doukobor vil lage site (1900-06). Other stops were: Pine Grove Big Ravine; MacPherson farm site (cement house built in 1912); a stone house built in 1905, now owned by the Walker family and still used to house Walker’s labourers; Thistledale School site (1914-65); Quaker meet ing house built in 1915, which is still usable today; Halcyonia district’s first post office on Hunchak land; Walker family farm, Pope (McDermid) family land where the two-storey house was moved to Bor den and is now owned by Tumbachs; Hoffnungsfeld School where William Diefenbaker (John’s fa ther) was the first teacher in 1906, then in 1963 Clear Spring School closed and was moved beside it, King George school closed and all the students came to the renamed Great Deere Consolidated School, which closed in 1976; Cle arspring School site; Great Deere Mennonite Breth ern Church, now privately owned, and cemetery (still used); and site of Great Deere store and garage. The tour visited Halcyonia School where John Diefenbaker was a student and where I (Lorraine) attended school for seven years. This school houses many photos of families, houses, barns and farms in the area going back to the early 1900s. My grandparents, Charles and Jennie Orchard, homesteaded one mile from the school and built a cement block house in 1910. My parents, Gordon and Kathleen Orchard, and family lived in the yard and then into the big house in the 1940s. It was family owned until 2002. We passed the site of Turtle Lake School built in 1907, closed in 1958 and then was moved to Bor den where it became part of the Borden Museum. We passed the Redberry puffed wheat plant, King George School still stand ing and Murray Dyck farm, which was once the site of a North West Mounted Po liceThejail.last stop was at the Diefenbaker Cairn, site of the original home of John Diefenbaker, former prime minister of Canada. As we travelled back into Borden This stone house was built in 1905 by the Clarke fam ily and is now owned by the Walker family and still in use to house their farm workers. | Photos submitted by Lorraine Olinyk

I love attending any music venue so didn’t want to miss out on one of Canada’s top bands from 40 years ago. This was at the Saskatoon Exhibition Aug. 13 when Trooper, originally from Winni peg, performed, but with only two of the original founding members. They still sound identical to way back, when they were pumping out many great hits. The concert drew a standing ovation leading to more tunes to keep the crowd cheering. At 10:30 p.m. Chilliwack from Brit ish Columbia rocked in the Kicking Horse Saloon with the crowd sitting at pic nic tables scattered on the grassy area. It was a great eveningInfour days, I attended two funerals and a memo ry get together for a farm neighbour. Julian Goyan’s service was last Thurs day. He was a neighbour. Doreen Monsebroten (nee Sander), a high school pal from North Battleford COCJ high school was also remembered. Fiftysix-year-old Esther (Eric) Huard, my farm neighbour who passed away last No vember was the other ser vice attended. These aren’t the best occasions for vis iting people, but I saw and talked a lot in those few days. There was a great turn out at all of the above. Congratulations to for mer Mayfair resident Gail Adamus on been a greatgrandmother again. Nursery near Parkside on Highway 40 will be host ing the last event of the season Sunday, Sept. 18. I’ve been to this before and glorious autumn colours become a magnet to one’s eyes. This is such a peace ful beautiful place to visit. People travel for miles to come for the musical en tertainment, craft vendors and the apple and rhubarb pies that are sold from the small concession. Even the walk on the grounds or a tractor-pulled wagon ride can be fun for people of all ages.A tour for Logan Huard, who grew up on a farm near Whitkow, was a highlight for him this summer. It was only a 10day trip, but filled it with many sights from France, Belgium and Switzerland. Apparently, the return air flight from Saskatoon to Paris was only $1,300. Compare this to domes tic flying within Canada, which is more expensive. Why is this? Logan is the son to Clark Huard and his grandmother is Madeleine who lives in a senior care home in North Battleford. A friend, Genevieve Works from Ruddell, is moving to Lashburn/ Maidstone country soon and still has quite a few of her paintings for sale. She is a self-taught artist whose paintings range from sce A helicopter spraying a farmer’s field three miles east of Maymont early Wednesday evening Aug.17.

PIPER: Our beloved Mother / Grandmother Marguerite Piper entered into God’s Kingdom on August 22, 2022 with Family Members at her side. Marg was born on May 25, 1927 at the Family Farm in Richard Saskatchewan. Gram Marg discovered the Secret to Happiness at a very young age was to give, she loved to help People and did so her entire life. It was her passion. It is not how much a person gives, but how much Love a person puts into giving, and there was lots of Love in Gram’s giving. Gram attended Richard school and later moved to North Battleford and attended the Separate schools. Once Marg moved to North Battleford she met a handsome, young man, Lawrence Piper and were married on July 25, 1945. Marg and Lawrence were truly a match made in Heaven. Marg and Lawrence went on to have 5 children; Ron (Pipe), Lynn, Brenda, Janice, and Karen who were all raised in North Battleford and at the Family Cottage, on the creek in Cochin that was built May 24th, 1946. The newer cabin was later constructed in 1981-82. Gram loved the lake, spending every summer there from May to September for many years. The Pipers had many special Celebrations at the Family cottage and were Amazing Hosts. Gram was also employed as a Sales Clerk for Craig Brothers Retail store for 27 years, worked at Eaton’s for 7 years, and assisted Lawrence in running the family business Piper Equipment. Grams Hobbies were sewing, volunteering, playing cards, and helping people. Gram was a Volunteer for the North Battleford CWL, joining in 1953, was also a life Member, a BUH volunteer for several years, was a BUH Auxiliary treasurer for 17 years, assisted with the Canadian Cancer Society, past member of Red Cross, and helped out with Brownies and Girl Guides. A Member of the Parkview Manor Condo Association in 2004, and on various Board Committees. Gram was very strong in her Faith, a Member of the St Joseph Calasanctius Church Choir at the 11:00 am Mass for over 30 years. Assisted with The Pastoral Care of Hope, a new life member, and Action Now Seniors Membership. Gram Loved her Rosary, and loved to pray. She Prayed every day. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Gram loved to travel and see the world; went to Hawaii 17 times, anchorage Alaska, Asian tour of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, All across Canada and the USA. One of Grams favorite Celebrations with her Family was her 40th Wedding Anniversary, July 25, 1985 with Lawrence; who was unwell at the time, her Family and close friends attending. Marg is survived by surviving Family Members including, children Lynn (Henry) Dechant and Family, Jan (Lionel) Mercier and Family, Karen (Darryl) Foulston and Family, Daughter in law Heather Piper and family. And many Lifelong Friends. Marg joins her Husband Lawrence; son Ron, “Pipe” and daughter Brenda (Jim) Lindsay in Heaven; Survived by their children. 14 Grandchildren and spouses, 30 Great-Grandchildren spouses, and 4 Great-Great Grandchildren. Marg wanted her Family to remember her for “The help she has given, and the Love for allALWAYS!” The Family would also like to give their heartfelt appreciation to the Staff and residents at Villa Pascal for their Loving care for the past 10 months. John 14:1-2 Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? Vigil of Prayer will be held Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. and A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. both held at St. Joseph Calasanctius Roman Catholic Church with Rev. By Raymond Maher Gold, glorious gold, will deliver financial security if have more of it than the ring on finger. Today we say that if you’re coming to British Columbia, bring cash as things are expensive here. This leads me to ask, is there another province or territory in Canada that isn’t costly these days? Most of us would welcome a stack of gold bars weigh ing the standard 12.4 ki lograms each as a reserve for the rapid evaporation of our money. Buying lottery tickets has mainly been undependable for gaining fiscal security in my expe rience. Here in British Colum bia, the high regard for gold is a vital ingredient of our history. For example, reports that pacer gold was found in gravel bars on the Fraser River in 1858 brought thousands of gold seekers to that river and be yond it. It was like being in a vast, long lineup for lot tery tickets for a big jack pot prize today. But today, we tap our credit cards for a chance to make ourselves rich, while those arriving in the gold rush were gam bling for gold with their lives. They, too, like us, were seeking financial se curity.Ofthe 30,000 or so gold seekers who poured into British Columbia, most went home no more pros perous than when they came. However, many did stay and build their futures here. But, heroically, they did this without anything but themselves as the in vestment and guarantee of their future. In two historical fiction novels, I write of the moti vation of those searching the treacherous Fraser Riv er by canoe for gold and the need of the gold hunt ers to trust their partners with their lives. Gold only gives financial security to thoseBothliving.novels highlight the raw and daring ad venture of the day-by-day struggle to find gold and sufficient food and shelter. Both books mix non-stop action with humour and the developing treasure of trust and respect between theThepartners.Deadly Five (pub lished in 2020) and its sequel, The Second Five (published in 2022), trans port readers to the Fraser River Gold Rush, where five fictional characters search for gold over two years. The Deadly Five is the first search and The Second Five is the second quest for gold. The answers to gaining financial security today, as in every age, are challeng ing and wearisome. The folks who prospered most during the gold rush were often those who sold the miners supplies, food and entertainment. The same issues of today were evi dent in 1858. Then, people Raymond Maher has written two fictional books against the background of the Fraser River gold rush that began in 1858. | Courtesy Raymond Maher
