BATTLEFORD–The Battleford Fire Department is working to bring in more firefighters as more senior firefighters are getting closer to retirement.
Fire Chief Larry Gabruch gave an update on the fire department’s activities at a recent Town of Battleford council meeting.
The fire department provides services to the RM of Battle River as well as the town of Battleford.
Gabruch said the fire department could benefit from having more younger members come on board for the future.
Currently, the fire department has 21 members, which is what it’s had for the last two or three years.
“We have never had a greater roster than 24,” Gabruch said. “We still have concerns. We’re an experienced department, which is great to have. The trouble is that time moves on. A lot of our department is going to be hitting the retirement phase, certainly, within the next five years. We’re going to have to re-double our efforts to entice community members to become part-time volunteer

Battleford Fire Department needs younger firefighters
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250212004115-a6ef3998c16bf3041f770380d4f0e230/v1/2eb91139e6d1b965ff89e81bbfcb3db3.jpeg)
firemen, in the right age-category.”
He noted that the fire department has learned over the years that it’s not best to try to recruit members from families with young children.
“You want to try and get them shortly thereafter, which usually puts them in that mid-30s as an optimum demographic age to target,” Gabruch said. “It’s as important that these individuals appear to be rooted in our community. There is a large time and money investment in training and bringing new firemen on. We’ve been very fortunate. The only ones that
we have lost recently have moved on to full-time careers in Alberta. We’re proud of that, that we’ve contributed to that.
“But it’s a society problem in the sense that it’s very difficult to find people to serve,” he added. “A lot of community groups are slowly shrinking in size. The social media and other things preoccupy their time. It’s a distraction, but at the end of the day it requires people like yourself and people like we have on our fire department that make our communities thrive, and prosper, and be safe.”
Gabruch also gave an up-
date on the fire department’s annual report at the meeting.
“2024 was a great year,” he said. “Our call log, our call load, decreased by approximately 25 per cent over our 10-year average, which is always a good thing in what we do.”
“In our own community in 2024, vehicle accidents would be the only one that was marginally above the 10-year running average,” Gabruch noted.
Mayor Ames Leslie, who is also a part-time firefighter, said it’s difficult to look for trends when assessing statistics on fire department calls
for service.
“There are really no trends,” he said. “Sometimes it is because you don’t have as much inclement weather. Sometimes it’s because for the months, the drivers are a little more careful [to prevent vehicle collisions]. We have a little bit more fire prevention in our community resulting in less residential or commercial fires. We very much have grown as a fire department to have more prevention, and more community awareness, [such as] less carbon monoxide calls. That trend is down.”
Leslie said those are the good things in the bigger picture.
“I don’t necessarily look at a trend year-over-year of less calls, because, as the fire chief already said, in January we’re above what our 10-year average would be for January...,” Leslie said. “That’s how quickly the trend can reverse when it comes to fire protection services.
“But I’m just very grateful that we have 21 paid on-call men and women who are willing to volunteer their time to protect our community and the RM. A considerable thanks goes out to them for making that choice,” the mayor added.

Town council passes new ‘Earned Days Off’ policy
By Angela Brown SaskToday.ca
BATTLEFORD – Battleford town council approved a new policy that would allow out-of-scope management to receive a day off a month, 12 days a year, for after-hours work they do to attend council and other meetings, and take care of projects after hours.
CAO Todd Francis discussed the earned days off (EDO) policy proposal at Monday’s council meeting.
“It’s there for them to take the time. There’s no cash value to it, and there’s no carryover [to the next year],” Francis said.
He said their supervisor would be responsible for determining when they can take the days, when their department can handle it.
“If they [management members] want to take five
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250212004115-a6ef3998c16bf3041f770380d4f0e230/v1/11f5f59c26b8de6046603b072ad6e2e9.jpeg)
vacation days, and they’ve accrued two EDOs, and they want to take seven [days off], have at it,” Francis said. “It’s up to them.”
Councillor Judy Pruden was at first hesitant about
the policy, then supported it once she heard there were controls in place, to make sure management had approval for when they took their EDO days.
The EDO policy replaces
what was before known as an informal understanding that management would receive an in-lieu day off for working council meetings.
The new policy formalizes the agreement and makes the details all-encompassing, so management can have their in-lieu day off when they perform work-related business outside of normal work hours.
Art Notes: The first skiff
By Holly Hildebrand Battlefords Art Club
The first skiff of snow was falling as I sat down to write and I immediately thought of how the seasons, perhaps the weather and temperature in general, have such an effect on how I look at the world and definitely how I approach my art practice. I’m quite sure I am quite the only one. Even if you are not a painter or sculptor or think of yourself as an “artist”, we are affected by our environment. The foods we eat, the clothes we wear, how we choose to decorate our home or yards.
When I look at my sketch books and artwork, I can often tell by the colors or subject when I created each piece. Lots of earthly warm tones in fall, bright greens in spring and summer with sparks of floral bits in winter, of ten bright and rich colors made clearer from the snow, I think. My color palette choices are definite ly personal all the time but tend to follow the flow of seasonal influence in subtle ways.
I invite you to pay attention to what you create throughout the seasons, no matter what you create. In the words of American poet, Mary Oliver, “Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it” Contact Battlefords Art Club at battlefordsartclub@gmail.com

“It’s time in lieu,” Mayor Ames Leslie said. “Right now the managers get a day [a month] in lieu of council meetings they attend. What this one is doing is it’s taking that, and recognizing that our leaders, our management team, work hours in excess of eight hours sometimes. This time inlieu is just going to com-

pensate them a little bit for the extra work that they put in to make our community what it is.”
The mayor noted that management is receiving a day a month now time in-lieu. This is just clarifying a much broader range of tasks that can constitute their overtime hours, and putting it into a policy. Before it was just an agreement, not written in formal policy.
“It’s the same amount off per year they are already getting. It’s just recognizing that all the extra things they do are contributing to that day off a month they are given,” Leslie said. He believes the EDO management team policy will be a good way to reward management for their extra efforts.
“I think any way you can recognize the hard work of your employees–whether that is your management or normal employees–I think it just goes a long way,” Leslie said. “When anybody works in excess of what their scheduled hours are, sometimes it’s just nice to have somebody say: ‘Thank you for that.’ This is just one of those ways.”

Rekindling connections: The power of Valentine’s Day dates
By Matthias J. Johnson Editor
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the air buzzes with the sweet scent of flowers, chocolates, and affection. For many, this day represents an opportunity to express love in grand gestures, but perhaps we should also take a moment to reflect on a deeper, often overlooked aspect of the holiday: the importance of reconnecting with our loved ones.
In our fast-paced lives, it’s all too easy to let relationships take a backseat. The demands of work, responsibilities, and daily stressors can unintentionally create distance, even with those we hold closest to our hearts.
Valentine’s Day offers a perfect occasion to pause, to reflect, and to actively choose connection once again.
Imagine transforming a typical Valentine’s Day dinner into a meaningful date that serves to nourish your relationship. Consider planning a day that accommodates not just romantic partners, but also family members and friends who enrich our lives. This year, let us broaden the definition
By R.H. Wood North Battleford
Mr. Trump, a man who must never sleep, or even nap after dinner, is full of ideas which he expounds without organized forethought especially on tariffs. In my opinion he is full of good intentions but has difficulty explaining himself – he needs an interpreter or an explainer by his side at all times to clarify what he really means. He is guilty of “verbose prolixity”, a phrase I have conjured up for him and as a gift for mankind. This classic tautology of similar words means that
of love beyond the traditional romantic context and embrace the idea of reconnecting with the wide spectrum of relationships we cherish.
One way to create memorable experiences is by revisiting shared interests or discovering new activities together. Whether it’s cooking a meal together, going for a hike, or attending a local event, these shared experiences can reignite the spark that initially brought us together. Such activities allow for authentic conversations, laughter, and the joy of simply being present with one another.
Furthermore, consider sending a heartfelt note or message to those you haven’t spoken to in a while. It can be a simple appreciation of the moments shared or an expression of regret for lost time. The beauty of Valentine’s Day lies in its simplicity – love, in all its forms, deserves recognition and celebration. A small gesture can go a long way in rekindling those flickering connections.
Another important aspect of reconnecting is to be intentional about quality time. In the age of screens, we
often find ourselves sitting together yet separated by the distractions of our devices. This Valentine’s Day, challenge yourself and your loved ones to put away the phones and engage in conversations. Listen actively, share stories, and reminisce about fond memories. Such moments of connection are invaluable; they remind us of our shared history and the bonds built over time.
In addition to personal connections, let us also consider our community. Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to reach out beyond our immediate circles. Volunteering for a local charity, inviting a neighbor for a meal, or simply checking in on someone who may be feeling isolated can amplify the spirit of love. Acts of kindness serve as a reminder that love is not confined to romantic rela-
tionships, but is a force that can uplift and connect us all. Finally, remember that reconnecting doesn’t have to happen solely on Valentine’s Day. While the day serves as a wonderful reminder to prioritize our relationships, cultivating these connections requires ongoing effort. Make it a habit to schedule regular catch-ups, family dinners, or outings that reinforce the bonds that matter
most. This Valentine’s Day, let’s take a collective step toward deepening our connections with those we care about. By embracing the essence of love in all its forms, we not only nourish our relationships but also foster a sense of community that enriches our lives. In the end, love is a journey, not just a destination—one worth celebrating every single day.

During the Second World War Britain had strings of stoutly constructed buildings of varying size and complexity which were used as lookout posts for German invaders. There were 28,000 of them, each perhaps half a mile apart strung around the country. Our U.S. border being 5,500 miles long means we would need 5,000 -10,000. Surprisingly, these look-outs were called “pill boxes” and ours would of course be checking for Fentanyl pill smugglers and illegal immigrants. Uniforms and still popu -

Sproull receives 15 years in prison for ‘monstrous behaviour’

BATTLEFORD–The judge in the trial of a man facing child pornography charges relating to his residence in Marshall where a home-based daycare used to operate pronounced his sentencing decision at the Court of King’s Bench in Battleford on Monday.
Justice Grant Currie sentenced Joseph Sproull to 15 years in prison.
Less credit for time served, Sproull has 14 years and 236 days left to serve.
Currie described Sproull’s actions in committing his offences as “monstrous behaviour.”
He noted, according to the Criminal Code, sexual offences against children are among “the most serious of offences.”
In addition to his time in prison, Sproull must also provide a DNA sample, and will be required to comply with the Sex Offender Information Registration Act.
He was ordered not to communicate with the victims while he is in custody.
Sproull must also forfeit his cellphone, which contains hundreds of child pornography images.
He must also pay a victim surcharge or work off the charge after he completes his sentence.
Sproull was previously found guilty on all eight charges–possessing and dis-
tributing child pornography, making child pornography x 2, as well as sexual assault x 2 and sexual interference x 2.
The two charges of sexual interference were stayed by the Crown for sentencing because a person can’t be convicted of both sexual assault and sexual interference at the same time, since the two offences have similar elements, known as the Kienapple Principle in law.
A publication ban is in effect on identifying the victims and complainants in the case.
Crown prosecutor Andrew Clements previously recommended a sentence of 18.5 years in totality for the charges given the gravity of the offences, while defence attorney Brian Pfefferle instead suggested a total of six years in custody would be appropriate as a global sentence.
Following court, Clements said he was pleased with the judge’s sentence of 15 years in jail.
“I’m very happy about the decision,” he told reporters.
“I think that’s an appropriate sentence. We were hoping for a sentence around that time period. So, we’re [the Crown] very happy with 15 years. He is now in the highest category of sentences [for this type of case] in this province.”
The judge had said in court a longer sentence was needed for both denunciation and deterrence in the case.
“It’s obviously, making

sure the public is aware–any future offenders–that this is the type of sentence [meted out],” Clements said. “For this particular offender, it was mostly to speak to how severe the charges were, how severe the facts were and to put them into a category that makes them stand out from other offenders.”
Clements spoke to some members of both of the victims’ families who said they were pleased with the sentence.
“This has been a long process from the start–from the RCMP, from the ICE [Integrated Child Exploitation Unit] Unit investigating it–to get to where we are today, especially with some of the delays we’ve faced,” he said. “So, I think it’s a very good result for everyone involved. It’s a very good result for the province. I’m very grateful for the work that went into it, from the investigators onward, so that we could get to where we are today.”
Clements added that while every victim would hope that Sproull could be in jail for the rest of his life, that isn’t realistic in Canada.
“Knowing what type of sentence he can get, I think they [the families] are happy with the result,” Clements said. “This was the type of sentence we were hoping for, so I think that everyone is happy, or as happy as you can be, under the circumstances, knowing that he is going to spend 15 years in custody.”

Battleford Humane Society’s Tales of Hope Gala raisesfunds for new shelter, uniting community in support of animal welfare
By Matthias J. Johnson Editor
The Battleford Humane Society proudly held its most significant annual fundraising event on February 8th, marking a night filled with excitement and purpose.
Titled the “Tales of Hope Gala,” this prestigious event brought together a remarkable gathering of over 100 attendees, all dressed in their finest suits and ties, uniting their efforts to uplift and support the numerous needs of the animals in their care. Among the focal points of this year’s fundraising initiatives was the critical need for a new building, which represents a significant step forward in the Humane Society’s commitment to animal welfare.
The gala took place at the elegant “Dekker Center for the Performing Arts,” a venue that perfectly matched the occasion’s grandeur. The atmosphere was electric as animals were gracefully paraded down the opulent red carpet, where they were introduced to the audience and lovingly auctioned off in hopes of finding their forever homes. This moving display highlighted the importance of each animal’s journey while also provid -
ing attendees an opportunity to make a difference in their lives.
In addition to the live auctions, the event featured a captivating silent auction, enticing bidders with a wide array of highend prizes that appealed to many guests. The eclectic mix included everything from luxurious items to unique experiences, ensuring that there was something for everyone. All proceeds from these auctions, along with other donations collected throughout the night, were directed entirely toward the care, health, and overall well-being of the animals at the shelter.
The previous year’s Tales of Hope Gala set a high standard, with the generosity of community sponsors resulting in over $39,000 raised, a remarkable testament to the compassion and dedication of the local community. This impressive amount showcased the collective will to address the pressing needs of the Humane Society, especially as the new building project continues to push forward.
Among the organization’s most urgent priorities is the construction of the much-anticipated new building, which will significantly increase the space available for the animals. The new facility
will more than double the existing shelter’s size and has been in development for over a decade. With the project nearing completion, there is palpable excitement as the anticipated opening is scheduled for this coming summer.
David Gubbe, the Board President, expressed his gratitude and awe during the event, stating, “The level of funding that was required to achieve this has been quite remarkable. We have not relied on any grants from senior levels of government; rather, our steadfast support comes entirely from the dedicated community of North Battleford.” His words underscored the vital role that community involvement plays in empowering the organization to continue its mission.
The newly constructed building promises to feature ample kennels, a state-of-the-art ventilation system, improved working and walking spaces, as well as expansive outdoor areas for the animals to run and enjoy themselves. Each of these enhancements is designed with the welfare of the animals in mind, aiming to create a nurturing and comfortable environment for them.
Concluding the evening, Gubbe shared heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the Humane Society,

stating, “On behalf of the Humane Society I would like to express how much I appreciate the support of our sponsors and donors. I would also like to thank the volunteers who are there every step of the way setting things up”.
The success of the Tales of Hope Gala not only highlights the unwavering commitment of the Battle -
ford community to animal welfare but also sets the stage for a brighter future for countless shelter animals. As the Humane Society continues to advance toward its goal of constructing a new facility, the generosity and enthusiasm displayed during the event serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a commu -
nity comes together for a common cause. With the anticipated opening of the new shelter just around the corner, there is a renewed sense of hope and excitement for the animals that will soon benefit from an improved living environment, ensuring they receive the love, care, and attention they so desperately need.

Gardening memories
By Ginnie Hartley Saskatchewan Perennial Society
Full disclosure–I was born in England, so when I talk about my childhood garden, I mean the whole thing–not just the veggie part. In England, the vegetable part is called … the vegetable garden! But the entirety is just “the garden”–flowers, cauliflowers, grass, roses, apples–the whole kit and caboodle. A “yard” in England is a piece of land next to a house, not necessarily for growing things. There–now that’s straightened out, let’s head out to my childhood garden.
I grew up in Surrey in the south of England. My dad was a very keen gardener; my mum not so much. We had a big garden and many of my childhood memories involve carefully picking the weeds out of the crazy paving and using enormous shears to cut the grass around the flower beds.
Dad’s pride and joy (actually one of many) was his herbaceous border (he called it his “herby border”) which ran along one side of the driveway. Not being a very keen gardener myself, I’m guessing at some of the flowers but I know there were many dahlias which
Dad would religiously lift every autumn and bury in the compost pile to over-winter. I remember the huge blooms, bright yellow ones with long whispery tendrils, small purple ones that looked like Christmas decorations. There were tall delphiniums (delphinia?!) at the back of the bed and all along the edge were low growing flowers, maybe primroses and crocus.
One year Mum ordered daffodil bulbs which we planted all over the place to surprise Dad in the spring. I seem to remember that we had to point them out to him so he could be suitably grateful–he thought everything that happened in the garden happened because of him!
The rose garden–four large beds in a separate hedged area with a birdbath in the centre. I don’t remember being involved in the life cycle of the roses–I think they were too precious. But I do remember the smell in the summer and the beautiful deep red, velvety petals.
There was a greenhouse where Dad would potter for ages, carefully building wooden trays for his seedlings. My job was to help with transplanting the little seedlings and I was awarded a small flower bed of my own, probably to encourage my innate gardening instinct
which sadly never really blossomed.
And then there was the grass–a lot of it and some of it very difficult to mow. Whoever initially designed the garden decided that some hills and valleys would make for an interesting perspective–that person obviously never wielded an ancient push mower. We had a grass tennis court–another of Dad’s prides and joys. Before his friends came over to play tennis, it was my job to scour the court for “whiskers”–the long, tough stalks of grass that the mower had decided not to deal with. I can picture myself lying on the grass so that I got a worm’s eye view of where the damn whiskers were so I could pull them out. Heaven forbid that a tennis ball should bounce awkwardly after landing on a whisker. The tennis court was surrounded by nets to stop errant balls from escaping and these had to be looped up every night. When this task was forgotten, there were sometimes hedgehogs caught in the netting which had to be freed. A large pair of leather gloves was kept in the greenhouse for this and luckily, I was too young to take part, as the hedgehogs were not usually very keen participants in the ritual. We had a large section of

the garden given over to fruits and vegetables. My parents were very thrifty and we grew most of what we ate. I remember helping to cover the red currant bushes with netting to keep the birds from eating the fruit. There were apple trees, gooseberries, raspberries and all kinds of vegetables which required lots of digging. At one time we also had chickens of which I was terrified. And my pet graveyard was right at the back of the garden–memorials to various hamsters, budgies and fish.
It was a large garden and it kept my Dad very busy on weekends when he was not working in London. We did have a gardener to do the heavy work but there were four of us children and we were all roped in to help.
The garden always looked lovely, summer and winter. When I was a child, there was always snow in the winter and one year my brother (a teenager at the time) sculpted a luscious, naked, snow lady on the front lawn much to my mother’s horror. She didn’t last long (the snow lady, not my mother).

Sadly my Dad died at the age of 60, just as he was looking forward to retirement years spent in his beloved garden. My Mum had to sell the house as it and the garden were too much for us–but the memories are still there as well as old photographs; me in a snow suit under the Japanese maple, Mum drinking a cup of tea on the lawn, my sister sunbathing. And always my Dad, looking proudly on. This column is provided courtesy of the Saskatchewan Perennial Society (SPS; saskperennial@hotmail. com). Saskatoon Public Schools
PRESS RELEASE - The recent layoff of 80 educational assistants (EAs) at Saskatoon Public Schools has raised significant concerns amongst school support staff and their union, CUPE 8443.
“The layoffs at Saskatoon Public Schools will hurt all students – but will disproportionately impact Indigenous students,” said Dene Nicholson, president of CUPE 8443. “The current situation is devastating to our students and our staff.”
This travesty at Saskatoon Public Schools stems from the federal government’s mishandling of applications for funds through Jordan’s Principle. This Government of Canada funding tool is designed to narrow the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.
380-8890
Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day this Friday even if one is by themselves there are many that are. As a group, if weather permitting (not too frigid) go out and enjoy the friendship of one another .. whether it be coffee or an extravagant meal. May the students, teachers, and other school staff enjoy the much-deserved February winter break. Students during this break still do their extracurricular activities so most parents don’t get a break from being the chauffeur!
Government officials have recently reported that there is a backlog of over 140,000 applications. Saskatchewan has the highest number of unprocessed applications with more than 33,000 claims pending. School divisions in both Alberta and Manitoba have both announced layoffs due to delays in funding. Several Indigenous governments and provinces have announced they will be stepping in to provide stop gap funding to services usually funding through Jordan’s Principle.
“CUPE is calling for the provincial government to follow the lead of Newfoundland and Labrador and step in with immediate funding to address the shortfalls from the federal backlog,” said Kent Peterson, president of CUPE
Saskatchewan. “This will limit the destructive cascade of harm and disruption to classrooms and our kids, and to our members.”
While immediate action is needed, CUPE is demanding that the next provincial budget has a significant investment in front line supports for education.
“From the perspective of CUPE 8443, Saskatoon Public Schools’ reliance on Jordan’s Principle funding has been necessary to address gaps created by provincial underfunding. This ongoing underfunding represents a setback in the critical process of reconciliation,” said Nicholson. “The upcoming provincial budget must rectify this situation and provide sustainable funding for classroom supports.”
