27-year-old Hafford hockey player survives massive heart attack

Began to feel ill on the ice

SASKTODAY.ca

A 27-year-old man is recovering from a massive heart attack suffered after playing in a Sask West Hockey League game.

According to a statement by the Hafford Hawks posted on the SWHL website, Devin Gerun, is expected to recover and is working with a cardiologist after ending up in the Coronary Care Unit at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

The statement indicated that on Sunday, Feb. 19, the Edam/Hafford provincial team was playing in Leroy when Hafford forward Gerun started to feel unwell. He was taken to the dressing room by head coach Greg Gryzbowski during the first overtime, where Gryzbowski called 911.

Fortunately, EMT’s and an ambulance were stationed at the rink and Gerun, accompanied by Gryzbowski, was transported to the Humboldt hospital.

“It was at the hospital in Humboldt where Devin’s condition worsened, and he experienced a massive heart attack,” says the statement. “Devin received

great care from the medical team in Humboldt and they were able to stabilize him enough to be transferred to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon where he received life-saving medical treatment.”

The statement goes on to say, “Devin will continue to work closely with his cardiologist, Dr. Orvold, as he begins his road to recovery, and his condition continues to improve day by day. Dr. Orvold is optimistic that Devin will have

a successful recovery and continue to live a full life.”

Gerun and his family have expressed thanks to everyone involved in his care and saving his life: EMS, Humboldt Emergency, and RUH CCU.

The Hafford Hawks statement says, “Devin wants the public to understand the reality that heart disease can affect anyone at any age, but with routine screening and early intervention can prevent serious life changing health challenges.”

N.B. liquor permit tops $1.4 million

The auction of 35 Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority retail liquor permits has netted a multi-million-dollar windfall for the province’s coffers.

The province reports that bids totalled $45,077,800 for the auction, which was conducted online at the McDougall Auctions website.

By 4:40 p.m. on Feb. 23, bids for the North Battleford permit had topped $1.41 million.

The provincial auction process began Feb. 6 and the permits were auctioned off in six groupings over periods of ten days each. The final auction for the sixth and final group of six retail permits was completed on the afternoon of Feb. 24.

As for the price tags of the winning bids submitted, it ranged from a low of $450,000 in Carlyle to $3,270,000 in La Ronge. The La Ronge permit auction drew considerable attention as the municipal government had been one of those putting in a bid, but the town

has confirmed their bid was not successful.

The majority of winning bids in the auction came in at over a million dollars. The average winning bid price for the 35 bids was $1,287,937.14.

“We are pleased to see these auctions come to a successful conclusion,” said Minister Responsible for SLGA Lori Carr in a statement. “The incredible amount of interest means that we will have additional revenue to put toward the high-quality public services we all enjoy.”

Police recover Gretzky collection worth $100K

Police have recovered almost $100,000 worth of stolen Wayne Gretzky hockey memorabilia and charged a man after they raided a Shellbrook home Feb. 18.

RCMP say that they executed a search warrant at a home on the 400 block of 2nd Avenue East in Shellbrook and recovered the stolen items. They charged Derek Herzog, 41, from Shellbrook with possession of stolen property obtained by crime over $5,000.

“We began investigating this theft nearly a year ago and given the prevalence of online ‘buy and sell’ sales, we didn’t know for sure if any of the stolen memorabilia items would be recovered,” said S/Sgt. Shannon Haggarty, Shellbrook/Ahtahkakoop RCMP Detachment Commander.

“This is an excellent example of how investigations take time to complete. It was continued, dedicated efforts on the part of RCMP investigators that resulted in charges laid and ultimately, items recovered from multiple different theft investigations.”

Police recovered threequarters of the stolen items and other stolen items including a snowmobile, a trailer and pick-up truck.

worth of Wayne Gretzky hockey memorabilia were stolen from a home in the Shellbrook RCMP Detach-

ment area. Police began investigating after getting the report in early April 2022.

The owners of the stolen property have all been informed of the recovery of the stolen items. RCMP say that there are still some memorabilia items outstanding at this time and they don’t have the specifics and say they continue to investigate.

Shellbrook/Ahtahkakoop RCMP thank the Community Safety Officer in Shellbrook for their assistance with this investigation.

Herzog will make his first appearance in Shellbrook court on April 4.

Battlefords Citizens on Patrol Program

Alert action by Battlefords Citizens on Patrol Program team members was recently key to the recovery of a stolen vehicle.

Battlefords Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) team spotted a suspected stolen vehicle Friday, Feb. 24, and alerted North Battleford’s Community Safety Officers (CSOs). The truck was confirmed as stolen and the recovery and investigation immediately turned over to the RCMP.

Prior to leaving on the nightly patrol, the five COPP teams and CSO pair were briefed by the RCMP detachment watch commander on issues of which to be aware. The briefing included the description of a stolen Ford half-ton truck. COPP members were also alerted to a social media post which included further descriptions of the stolen truck. The suspected stolen truck was observed about 90 minutes into the patrol; from time of theft to time of recovery was less than three hours.

sale highlights humane society’s need for foster homes

Council honours Dani Williams for impact on youth

Dani Williams, executive director for Concern for Youth, was presented with a token of the town of Battleford’s appreciation following her delegation to the council at their Feb. 21 meeting.

Williams presented the organization’s new strategic plan, updated council on CFY’s recent programming and announced her recent resignation following a four-year tenure.

“It makes me a little emotional, a little sad because I put so much time into it (Concern for Youth), but new opportunities, new things are coming,” Williams said to council.

An overview of their 2022 fiscal year, which runs from April to March, shows that between their mentorship and programming, staff have spent 2,779 hours of direct time with youth, with an average of 278 hours a month.

Battlefords Humane Society has been hit hard this winter, and with more than 130 animals in their care, the organization is desperately searching the community for foster homes and adoptees.

Brandon Corbeil, the humane society’s temporary and assistant manager, says the shelter usually sees a spike in spring but is now overcrowded months ahead of normal.

“We’re really concerned that once spring hits and that intake increases, if we’re not able to empty cages, that is a huge concern for us,” Corbeil said to the NewsOptimist, noting that the shelter is low-kill and focuses on sales and outsourcing to other foster homes or rescues before

considering euthanasia.

“I’ve noticed a lot more surrenders over the last six months than we’ve ever seen in the building. The stray intake is out of hand. I’m sending out five or six animals daily in adoptions and bringing in seven or eight that same day.”

To try to open more kennels before the spring influx, the society is holding its first-ever, building-wide sale with every animal in its care now 50 per cent off.

“This year we’ve just been so swarmed with the intakes, we’re over capacitated in both dogs and cats, and when we’re over capacitated, disease and sickness are at an alltime high. It’s just super hard to keep it under control.”

The sale runs until Monday, March 6.

Corbeil says there are more ways to help the shelter, whether through donations or volunteering, for those unable to adopt or foster an animal.

“We are always looking for dogwalkers, especially now that it’s getting nicer. Dogwalkers really, really help us, in the mornings especially,” he said, adding, “Donations are always appreciated, and they always help,”

The shelter is also asking the public to bear with them during their sale as they’re short-staffed and expect to fall behind in some areas as they try to make room for the oncoming spring influx.

“We’re really hoping this is going to empty our cages and allow us to be able to take in some more intakes and help out the community even more.”

“The girls are doing amazing things, the youth engagement position has been amazing since we’ve started it ... it has been a very vital piece in our connection with youth,” Williams said.

Williams also unveiled the organization’s new strategic plan, which she describes as “simplistic but updated,” and details CFY’s goals, vision, and values, which include: accountable; collaborative; inclusive; empowerment; responsive; creative; community; connection.

“It’s really empowering kids with voice and choice and figuring out what they want to see … what is the point of us as adults bringing things the youth don’t want to attend?”

Williams noted that several youths are engaging with youth readiness programs, which include building resumés and taking the babysitting course offered through Battlefords Indian Metis Friendship Centre.

January saw an uptick in drop-in programs for the organization, including an LGBTQIA+ group. Youth have had the opportunity to join a Crossfit program, are interested in learning ASL and are planning to take a writing workshop to learn how to express themselves through stories.

“Yes, we’re having fun, but we’re still learning,” Williams said.

In the last four years, CFY has had 173 referrals to their organization, with 63 coming since April 2022 and 18 youths celebrating successful closures.

“I have seen so many youth in the last four years grow and achieve goals, and see them when they first came to us, compared to when they closed or moved away. They are actually shocked with the things they were able to achieve,” Williams said.

“I’m so proud of the program. I’m so proud of the programming that we’ve done. I’m excited to see where it goes.”

“The amazing work that you’re doing is just fantastic. I’m sure you’re going to be missed,” Councillor Boutin-Jervais said, adding, “Congratulations on the four years … that’s pretty amazing.”

“To hear that 18 youth don’t need you anymore is amazing. So, thank you for all that you do,” Councillor Judy Pruden said.

Mayor Ames Leslie also commented, saying, “... you have completely changed the face of Concern for Youth, not just the name, but for the Battlefords in general. You’ve given our kids an outlet to express themselves, which I think today’s society takes for granted.”

And to highlight her last town council meeting, Councillor Kevin Russell gave Williams a token of the town’s appreciation, honouring her and what she’s done for the Battlefords.

“I don’t think we necessarily listen to our kids. Thanks for creating a safe haven for kids to express themselves.”

Letter Focus on love, not complaints

Dear Editor

My heart wept when I read the front page article in the Feb. 16 News-Optimist, “Drag queen event at Dekker Centre sparks community controversy.”

For someone who believes in a God of Love, and in the commandment Jesus Christ himself set forth, “Love your neighbour as yourself,” , it makes me shudder when other so-called Christians come forward only to be hurtful and discriminatory.

Jesus accepted those his society rejected – adulterers, tax collectors, people of races other than his own. If he were here in our day and time, I have no doubt he would accept members of the LGBTQ community.

For decades, I have puzzled as to why certain “Christian” groups pick and chose certain classes of “sinners” to rally against. Even supposing dressing as a drag queen is a sin – which, to be clear, I do not believe it is – why the focused outcry against that particular “sin?”

Dressing up does not even violate any of the 10 commandments. Why not rise up and protest, instead, lies and falsehoods which do break one of the commandments?

What about not respecting the Sabbath? How many of those people who phoned or emailed the Dekker Centre to make their righteous protest stop at Walmart or a grocery store on a Sunday to pick up a few things?

The Christian faith teaches that we are all sinners, we all fall far short of being perfect human beings. It also teaches love, a love that is patient and kind, a love that does not dishonour others, a love that accepts people as they are.

If you too are a Christian, how about focusing on sharing that love, instead of complaining about things you do not like and which do not hurt anyone.

Olivia and Noah top Saskatchewan’s baby names for 2022

Submitted by Saskatchewan Health

In a list of the top 20 baby names for 2022 was released by eHealth Saskatchewan last week, Olivia was the most popular name for baby girls for the eighth year in a row.

The second most popular girl name was Amelia, marking a dramatic come-back from eighth place in 2021.

Noah was the most popular name for baby boys for the second year in a row year, just edging out long-time favourite Liam.

As of data published Feb. 13, 2023, there were 60 baby girls named Olivia, followed by Amelia, Emma, Ava, Lily and Sophia. There were 58 baby boys named Noah in 2022, followed by Liam, Leo and then tied in the next two spots are Jack and Lucas, and Benjamin and Theodore.

Some new names made the top 20 list. Mia is back on the girls’ list, this time at number 15 - only debuting on the top 20 list once before in the last 10 years, back in 2013. Walker is at number 12 and Beau is at number 16 on the list of boy names.

The girls’ list saw some drop-offs from 2021. Baby girl names that did not carry over to the 2022 top 20 list were Harper, Aria, Avery and Nova. More than one-third

of the most popular baby boy names from 2021 didn’t reappear on the 2022 top 20 list: Grayson, Jackson, Henry, Brooks, Bennett, Emmett and Rhett.

Check out the Top 20 Baby Names over the last 10 years.

There were 12,802 live births registered in Saskatchewan as of Feb. 13, 2023. The final count is anticipated to be completed in March. The number of live births registered in 2021 was 14,559. This does not include Saskatchewan mothers who gave birth outside of the province.

Correction

The News-Optimist incorrectly identified the amount of two donations made by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 70 in last week’s paper.

The 2537 Army Cadet Corps received a $2,000 donation from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 70 and the 43 Air Cadet Squadron also received a $2,000 donation.

We’re sure the Legion would have liked to have been able to provide the $10,000 donations the News-Optimist erroneously reported.

Openness and Transparency

Since there are a number of past and present government questionables still echoing I wondered if there might be a difference between an “Enquiry” and “Inquiry” beyond pronunciation. Surprisethey are really the same words, but “inquiry” is a slight variant of the word “enquiry” and thus lacks the irreproachable weight of the word “Enquiry” which dominates by being most true to its Latin origin. It therefore seems that many of the governmental “inquiries” lack a measure of significance and value despite complexity and costs. Perhaps an enquiry is needed into past inquiries.

If one takes time to study the bent of the chairpersons and members of these inquisitions, one can quite readily prognosticate the outcomes. Cynics, my-

WoodPile The

self not being one, might regard these dramatic exercises as wasteful, not really prime time T.V. viewing and not worth staying up late at night over. It is well known that all governmental inquiries are totally non-partisan despite suspect weighting so that appropriate clear decisions are reached without any risk of a Scottish “non proven” impasse. This verdict is

not available in other U.K. or colonial courts but is extremely useful and fair and deserves adoption elsewhere. It is the hidebound requirement for clear unequivocal decisions that in my opinion can lead to a miscarriage of justice which is so extremely difficult to revise and further clarify as time lapses and memories fail. “Not proven” essentially means “not guilty” but the suspicion of guilt unfortunately often remains. That is surely better than judgement error.

Recent inquiries include SNC Lavalin, WE and E.M.A., all of which involved our prime minister, government ministers and officials and caused resignations. Judge Rouleau’s decision in the E.M.A. inquiry was cautiously shrouded and could easily have been termed a “non-proven” verdict. These inquiries should not be allowed to fade from

memory. Let us also not forget the ArriveCAN app or questions over contracts to consultant firms such as McKinsey. Not much is heard about the excessively costly still ongoing boondoggle over federal government renumeration. (Phoenix pay system).

Heading the news at this time are questions about foreign influence and involvement in the last two federal elections. Calls are being made for a public inquiry with all party representation.

The NDP want explanations about rumours of the health minister influencing and meddling with the drug pricing independent regulatory body (PMPRB). The next step is for all the winning bidders to begin the process to apply for the retail store permits and be officially licensed to operate.

According to the prov-

requirements, secure locations and hire staff, among others. The bidders have 18 months to obtain their permit and open up.

The 35 retail permits were offered for bid to replace 34 publicly-owned

NWC embraces ‘Better Together!’ to support community

SASKTODAY.ca

North West College is getting onboard with the Better Together! Campaign in the Battlefords

Better Together! was initiated by Pastor Deb McNabb in response to a series of suicides in the Battlefords which deeply impacted the community. Through this experience, and with the support of Allysa Woodrow they created the Better Together T-Shirt Project. According to North West College, their vision was to connect generations by having them wear and share the message, “We truly are better together. Connected communities are healthy communities.”

Community members wore Better Together Tshirts and look for a matching logo on Tuesdays as a way to connect and engage with each other. The project began with 300 students

and seniors and has expanded to more than 25,000 shirts worn across the country.

According to campaign organizers, the outcomes are mutual understanding, improved feelings of well-being, decreased loneliness, satisfaction from sharing knowledge and experience, and enhanced social cohesion.

North West College has worked with McNabb and her team to create a BesTEES T-shirt design that reflects instruction at the college. The design incorporates a heart, pencil and eraser to emulate the education sector. On Tuesdays it is worn by all instructors and staff of NWC.

“I am challenging all Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions that are passionate about making a difference in their respective communities to take up this initiative, too” says Dr. Eli Ahlquist, president and CEO of North West College.

“The important message that Better Together shares is something we are excited to be a part of,

ensuring our students and staff can increase personal connections while on campus, will provide a positive and engaging learning environment.”

Numerous organizations across the country, including government branches and sports teams have all

joined in this campaign. “I genuinely appreciate North West College and their willingness to be leaders in carrying our message forward” says McNabb. “I felt their heartbeat — to be a community where everyone feels safe, seen, heard, supported, significant and

cared for. I thank the college for wearing and sharing our BesTEES and for being ambassadors of our very important message!”

For more information on the Better Together! initiative visit the campaign website: www.bettertogethersk.ca.

The BUHF is reminding supporters to purchase their tickets early so the buyer can be entered into several draws, including:13 cash draws every month; the early bird prize of $1,000, which must be purchased before April 6,; the previous purchaser prize of $1,000 for those who have purchased within the last three years, which must be purchased by April 14 at 5 p.m.; and the 50/50 enhancement draw.

Going small

Battlefords Art Club

I have a soft deadline for the novel I’m writing — April 1, it should land in my agent’s inbox. A novel is a big thing, but what I remember most clearly from novels are the small moments, the precise images, even a single sentence. Maybe that’s why I’ve been going small in my visual art, giving myself tiny spaces to fill. My weekly planner has become a playground for my creativity, in addition to being the place where I record my intentions, plans, and reflections.

Confronted by a day’s column that I didn’t know how to fill, I pulled out an old National Geographic from the library’s sale table, a glue stick, and a pair of scissors. I made a collage so small, my hand can almost fully eclipse it, leaving only a few centimetres at the very top exposed. This collage isn’t separable from the planner. I’m not going to remove and display it. I made it for one purpose: to delight myself.

Other Battlefords Art Club members are also reaping the rewards of going small. Pam Beaver has been creating alcohol ink cubes and tons of cards, while Rita Young has been using the Zentangle method, where abstract art is traditionally completed in pen on a 3.5-inch square surface. She’ll even be teaching an Easter-themed Zentangle class on Tuesday, March 21, at 1 p.m. at the Don Ross Centre Art Classroom. You can register by phone at 306-445-5636 or by email to ritabob1@hotmail. com. Cost is $20.

The next time you’re facing a blank page, I encourage you to go small! There’s permission in having a tiny pocket for creativity.

Festival Fanfare

Music begins March 13

Three adjudicators, who are experts in their fields will be supporting Battlefords area music students at the 2023 Battlefords Kiwanis Music Festival. Opening the festival for band, instruments, and strings classes is Daryl McKinnon. McKinnon is currently the director of the Moose Jaw Adult Concert Band.

Marcia McLean is adjudicator for vocal, choral, spoken word, and musical theatre classes. McLean is currently the artistic director of the Swift Current Oratorio Choir and an adult chamber choir, Prairie Spirit.

Piano adjudicator Maria Medlow, is originally from Argentina. Medlow grew up playing the violin and piano. Upon moving to Canada , she was accepted at the Senior Academy at Mount Royal Conservatory. She completed her ARCT certification in both violin and piano and moved to complete her music performance studies at the University of Calgary.

The 2023 Battlefords Kiwanis Music Festival is scheduled to run from March 13 to 25.

“When I heard [Goodman’s drummer] Gene Krupa, I knew I wanted to become a musician. At four years old, I was banging on my mom’s pots and pans in our second floor apartment in Worcester, Mass. I never

had a desire to play vibes. Drums were my thing. I was going to school at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Second semester, freshman year, I had to have a secondary instrument. I was already taking a little keyboard so I could do arranging. I had fooled around with my brother’s vibes at home. So, I took vibes for the class. By the end of the semester, I was practicing on the vibes five hours a day. I left school at the end of the semester and went on the road. That was the end of the drums.” - Harry Sheppard (1928 -2022), jazz vibraphonist who gigged with Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Goodman, Barbra Streisand and Bob Chadwick

Meota and District News: Films hosted March 6

Sorry to not have had much in the way of news last weekend but we had no Wi-Fi in the Edam Manor from Friday to Wednesday morning, Feb.22.

Mark your calendar for the Rabbit Lake Snowmobile Rally March 4 and watch for posters for more information.

A local World Day of Prayer service will be hosted/organized by Meota United Anglican Church at Meota Do Drop Inn, Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m. (previously published time was incorrect)

Bridge was played in the Pioneer Hall Feb. 21, with three tables in play. Top score went to Donna Scherman and Albert Blais. Second were Barb Mitchell and Dave Creegan. Feb 23 found two and a half tables with top score tied and going to Catriona Winterholt and Donna Scherman and Jean Lawes and Fraser Glen.

Canasta was played Feb. 24 with top score going to Gwen Lacerte and Marion Ottas. Second were Lorna Pearson and Dave Sayers and third, Arlene Walker and Gordon Cline.

Feb. 18 was Free Fishing Day so there were more fishermen out on the lake than usual.

While the snowbirds in

Yuma, Ariz. are not getting drifting snow they have been getting drifting sand. Not sure that would be very nice either. We expect our coldest weather may be behind us, and if not any more should not last long. We are noticing that the days are getting longer, with sunrises and sunsets, adding interest to each one.

The United/Anglican Church services for March, April and May begin at 11:30 a.m. each Sunday.

Hyman sing at the Turtleford Good Shepherd Church March 12 is at 3:30 p.m. with a potluck lunch to follow.

Films will be shown at the Do Drop In on Monday, March 6 at 1:30 p.m.

The first, “Brown Enough,” follows four people of Southeast Asian descent and their life experiences with racial discrimination, especially by those of their ethnicity unaware of the effect their language has. The feature film is “Kingdom of the Polar Bears.” As the Arctic changes faster than ever, a team of polar bear guides follow the bears on the sea ice of Hudson Bay. They will document the secret world of bears, a mysterious and disappearing realm that is the bears’ key to survival. Life on the ice is a critical time for the bears.

The manor presented

Jack Stewart with a decorated birthday cake at noon Saturday and sang Happy Birthday to him. It was a nice surprise and we all joined in sharing the good chocolate cake, after.

I have a new phone number with my move from Meota to Edam — 306-397-7778, but my address and email remain the same. Looking for someone to take over this little task, of gathering local information for the paper. There are still folks that don’t have Wi-Fi and so still like to read local news in the paper and see the odd picture.

Meota Curling Club

Week 12 Recap

(By Derek Welford)

Game of the week was the Wanda Weber and Evan Schmidt matchup Thursday night. With two ends left to play, Schmidt found himself down 8-5 and needing a spark to get going. The Brightsand native didn’t have to look far as it was in his front end. A rousing speech by assistant team captain Darrell McCarthy at the break followed by two great shots by second Damon Schaefer was just what the team needed, as Schmidt was able to manufacture a fivepoint score. Limiting Weber to one in the final end, Schmidt held on to a 10-9 dramatic comeback win which also featured the

season debut of Al Doom in place of Lloyd Malenfant.

The clock struck midnight on Derek Welford’s improbable Cinderella run as his team’s undefeated season came to an end. Zane Lacousiere required only six ends as his team annihilated the Welford rink, 9-1.

The Meota curling rink will be accepting tenders to extend the scoreboards after Kirsten Bru took out the Dean Menssa team 131.

Kyle Doom rallied his team of Kyla Custer, Jordan Sitter and Breanne Stevenson to come back from

an early deficit to win 6-4 against the Randy Orchison team.

Class was in session Tuesday on sheet two as Randy Sharp taught his brother Colin Sharp a thing or two with an 8-1 curling clinic, as Randy Sharp avenged his January loss.

Huguette Johnson was promoted to skip duties and brought in Don and Martina Johnson in substitution of Pat and Brenda Mohr Tuesday night in a matchup with the Gil Cadrin rink. The power of four Johnsons combined on one curling team was not enough to overpower the Cadrin-Cole team, as

Wild’s Window

they fell 8-3. Even though he was missing Robert St. Amant, Pat Becotte orchestrated an 8-6 win over Terry Tait to get back into the win column. Player of the week can be found on the Kyle Doom rink, as Jordan Sitter’s impact and contribution to his team is more then deserving of the weekly honour. In his first year in the league, his curling prowess has transformed from a beginner to a seasoned veteran in the matter of weeks and is one of the leading candidates for rookie of the year.

I have always felt an affinity towards squirrels. This squirrel here, for instance, climbed the tallest tree closest to it just to shriek and immediately climb back down. Its simplistic lifestyle and limitless energy are something to marvel at. | Photo and text by Blake Feist

Saskatchewan’s Economic Growth Continues

The value of Saskatchewan’s wholesale trade increased by 24.1 per cent between December 2021 and December 2022, the highest increase among provinces. Manufacturing sales rose 25.5 per cent in the same period, ranking second among the provinces. Saskatchewan continues to lead the nation in several of the country’s key economic indicators. Our government remains committed to attracting investment, increasing the value of our exports and expanding our international markets to ensure this growth continues.

Unity News: March madness for sports, activity

Correspondent

February flew by in Unity with no lack of things to do. March will start off with a bang as several activities are lined up this weekend.

Before I continue, hello, Jeannie L., and thank you for all your positive words and thoughts shared on this column. It is nice to know people outside of Unity enjoy reading about everything that takes place in our town.

March 4, the UCHS girls will host their annual pink game basketball event aimed at raising funds and awareness for breast cancer. The event will include a dedicated pink game with the Warriors playing Rosetown as well as a bake sale and other fundraising efforts.

March 4, the Unity Curling Club hosts a fundraising dance featuring Danny and The Dusters. This would have been the dance held in conjunction with the oilperson’s bonspiel, however the structural issue that forced season’s end now has the UCC executive looking to build funds for the cost of repairs.

March 5, the Unity Skating Club will host their annual ice carnival “One Hit Wonders,” which is sure to entertain as both the littlest and experienced skating stars showcase their talent.

March 6 the annual Celebrate Unity event takes place, for the first time inperson in a few years. Jake Vaadland is the entertainer for this event.

Probably the biggest challenge for Unity’s Parks and Recreation Department has been the discovery of a structural issue on the curling rink side. “We have another group of engineers assessing it Feb. 13 week,” says Culture and Recreation Director Lisa Feser.

There has been no negative response to new ‘off-limits’ areas of the rink. Feser says, “So far, so good. Signage is up and seems to be working most of the time,” says Feser.

Those who participated in the free, fun, Family Day activity at the museum Feb. 20 were grateful for volunteers and organizers.

Sunday brunches continue each week until April. The museum welcomed more than 1.700 visitors in 2022 and 72 volunteers contributed 3,957 hours.

At Unity Composite High School, it’s March madness for basketball teams as senior teams compete at conferences March 10 weekend.

Congratulations to UCHS student and athlete, Thomas Snell, who competed for Team Rivers West at the 50th anniversary of Saskatchewan Winter Games. The event also saw UCHS alum, Alexis Elder, serve as female alpine ski coach and UCHS student, Chenae Bowker, compete as an athlete in alpine skiing, winning a bronze medal.

UCHS junior curlers competed at their district event, held in Wilkie Feb. 27-28, but results were not yet known at press time.

UCHS senior curlers head to their regional competitions this weekend; girls in Langham and boys in Rosthern.

At Unity Public School, efforts raised more than $1.000 for Telemiracle, so students earned the right to torture Mrs. Brown and Mr. Gieni. Date and torture methods are still be finalized.

Seniors’ centres will be participating in some St. Patrick’s Day fun so be sure to watch for posters or their social media pages for updates on their green shenanigans.

Unity has another centurian as Richard Lorne Swarbrick celebrated his

100th birthday in February and writer Helena Long wrote a story about him in Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald and SASKTODAY.ca.

Unity KidSport benefited once again from the eighth year of donations from Nutrien Ag in Unity as a result of their fertilizer fundraiser. A cheque for $2,540 was received.

“Over the years Nutrien

has given back to Unity KidSport from the sale of lawn fertilizer to ensure all kids can play,” explains Unity KidSport committee member, Nicole Headrick. Headrick notes that they have some exciting ideas planned for spring. Unity KidSport committee is always looking for new members.

In responses to an in-

terview with Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald and SASKTODAY.ca, Patrick Boyle, spokesperson for the Sask. Water Agency, talked about specifics from the February released preliminary runoff forecast on the areas of Kerrobert, Luseland, Macklin, Unity, and Wilkie.

“These areas range from near normal spring

runoff potential to below normal runoff potential,” Boyle says.

“Winter precipitation so far looks better than average in these areas. However, spring runoff is also affected by soil moisture prior to freeze-up, how much snow we have during winter, and how fast the melt could be.”

Mayfair and District News

Heartfelt condolences to Bev (Darrell) Pollard on the passing of her 65-yearold sister, Jan Valliere, from Tolfield, Alta. She passed away the middle of February and is survived by a daughter, grandchildren and many siblings. A local name people in our area recognize is Bernadette (Orest) Demyon from Hatherleigh, who is also a sister to Jan.

Dog sled racing is still big in the north, as Larry and Linda Liddell of Rabbit Lake can attest. They have been watching the mushers and husky dogs race. Apparently if the day’s temperature is too warm, they will race at night as the dogs prefer

the cold. Their youngest daughter Kaylie (Mitch) and family reside in La Ronge.

My second oldest son Greg and his wife Kelly from Saskatoon were holidaying in Hawaii for 10 days, returning with sun tans. Hawaii is expensive but still popular. Her parents were in Hawaii at the same time, so they vacationed somewhat together.

One of my acquaintances who doesn’t want to reveal her name wasn’t overly happy with being bussed from Calgary to Regina the other day when a West Jet flight was cancelled. It was a long bus ride arriving at 1 a.m. It has been stated by frequent travellers that airlines in Saskatchewan are proving to become more unpredict-

able and untrustworthy.

Oldest grandson to Cathy and Randy Aumack of Rabbit Lake flew by himself from Edmonton to Mesa, Ariz. (near Phoenix) to visit his grandparents during the February school break. Fourteen-year-old Liam’s days in the desert were occupied by shopping in nearby Algodones, Mexico, touring the lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and other vegetable crops, touring the local Yuma historic prison and the Imperial Dam. In California they were fortunate to see a wild donkey. There are many closed gold mines in the area that hold a lot of interesting history. Liam was fortunate to travel to Mexico with his parents Russell and Brenda and his two younger brothers dur-

ing Christmas holidays. Are we all anxiously waiting for pussy willows to eventually arrive?

March has arrived so those small buds should appear in approximately six weeks. The winter blahs will slowly diminish and lift up everyone’s spirits. Rabbit Lake hosts their snowmobile rally this weekend on well groomed trails this Saturday. Come out and enjoy the day.

The older you get studies have proven you become quieter. Life humbles you more deeply as you age so they say. The biggest one for most is one realizes how much nonsense you’ve wasted your time on. Have a great month of green as St. Patrick’s Day is approaching.

Time to declutter, discard, decide what is essential

Many of us have the potential to become fullfledged hoarders. Television programs where folks with stuffed homes must decide what to keep or sell, what to donate and what to trash make me feel that our house isn’t that cluttered after all.

It has been my experience that we do accumulate more things or stuff than we use repeatedly or are essential for our lives. Likewise, our spiritual lives can become cluttered with our favourite sins, wrong attitudes and actions that need to be recognized, confessed and trashed to give room for what is essential to our faith. Therefore, the church season of lent can

N

eighbourly

Advice According to Ed

be a spiritual cleaning and refreshing of our souls for those willing.

The season of lent is a time of self-reflection where we declutter our spiritual life. It is an invitation to fast and come to terms with our lifestyle as it reflects being a Christian. It must always begin with a recognition that

we do sin and fall short of obeying the fullness of God’s law despite our best intentions. Romans

3:2223 states, “There is no difference for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” God’s law makes us conscious of our sins. However, God’s word gives us hope beyond our sins, for the blood of Jesus

purifies us from all sin.

Ash Wednesday (Feb. 22.) begins the church season of lent. Lent’s first day signals that in 46 days, we will celebrate Easter Sunday.

Lent is referred to as 40 days in length as a parallel to Jesus spending 40 days and nights in the desert fasting and praying after his baptism. Because we do not count Sundays as part of Lent, the result is the 40 days of Lent.

There are many ways to speak of the season of lent. Traditionally, it has been a time of fasting, prayer, repentance, selfdenial and solemness in the awareness of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for the forgiveness

of our sins.

Ash Wednesday, traditionally, features the marking with ashes on the forehead in the form of a cross. The ashes used are the remains of the burning of the palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. Ashes represent our mortality.

Ashes remain from what is consumed by fire. When the ashes are applied to a person’s forehead, it is with the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall return.” Alternately, “Repent and believe the gospel” may be said when applying the ashes.

We may ignore the reality of our sins and our ultimate death in our daily

life. Sadly, we also deny the gospel; the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are hesitant to admit our humble ancestry. Genesis

2:7 says, “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the bread of life.” “All are from the dust, and to dust all return.” Ecclesiastes 3:20.

In Lent, we focus on God’s love for us as sinners. “Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for our sins. If we confess our sins, Jesus is faithful and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9, 2:1-2
