Great facility, great shows and lousy attendance. It was clear Moe McGuinty had a lot on his mind about the Dekker Centre’s finances in his final presentation to North Battleford City council Monday. “You hate to put it in a context of ‘use it or lose it,’” said McGuinty. “But

the attendance to these shows is not what was ever anticipated.” McGuinty, who is retiring this year as Dekker Centre general manager, reported the facility lost money in 2017. According to the audited statement submitted to council that night, prepared by Holm Raiche Oberg, the facility reported a deficit of revenue over expenses of $17,512 for the year ending Dec. 31. That compared

to a surplus of $44,678 in 2016. This is in spite of some belt-tightening at the Dekker Centre. McGuinty noted that expenses were lower than in 2016. But “our revenues were a little shy,” he said. Those dropped from $622,696 to $545,145 in 2017. Councillor Kent Lindgren, who serves on the Dekker Centre board, noted attendance was the reason behind the drop.

“Attendance has been down this year and that’s really where we’ve seen our revenue decrease,” said Lindgren. He urged the public to attend the “amazing” shows that are hosted. “Hopefully, people can still come out and support. Your attendance is support, but we want you to come out to everything.” There are some theories as to why attendance has been an issue. “That could be a prod-

uct of the economy, there’s a lot of factors at play when you’re in the entertainment business, there’s a lot of variables,” Mayor Ryan Bater said to reporters. McGuinty’s remarks at council indicated it has been an ongoing struggle for the Dekker Centre to live up to their mandate from the City to “provide a diverse program of live entertainment every year that we produce and bring in.” Continued on Page 3

Treaty 6 flag flies at City Hall By John Cairns Staff Reporter

At long last, the Treaty 6 flag is flying permanently at North Battleford City Hall. The flag-raising ceremony took place at 10 a.m. at City Hall June 21, and was attended by civic officials, Indigenous leaders, elders and veterans and a large gathering of onlookers there to witness the historic occasion. “I’m really proud to be part of this community today,” said Mayor Ryan Bater. “It’s because all of you came out today. This is an amazing crowd and we really wanted this to be something the community got behind, and I think we’ve achieved that. Today is a historic day, we will all remember this for a very long time.” The decision to fly the Treaty 6 flag permanently at City Hall was made last July in a resolution passed at City Hall. But the flag raising did not happen right away. Mayor Bater noted the City wanted to consult with Indigenous people first and had been working with the elders’ group of Battle River Treaty 6 on how to best commemorate the occasion. The decision was made to raise the flag at a ceremony on June 21, 2018,

to coincide with National Indigenous Peoples Day in North Battleford and across Canada. The annual celebrations include a wellattended pancake breakfast hosted by Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre, as well as live music from Indigenous entertainers. The entertainment program at the annual event at the parking lot on 12th Avenue and 102nd Street was halted briefly in the morning to allow people to attend the flag-raising at City Hall on the next block. “We wanted to do this in a respectful way and a way that engaged the community,” said Bater. Bater cited the importance of educating people about Treaty 6. “Before there was a city, or a town or a Saskatchewan, even before there was a Canada, this was the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples. People who lived here and through the signing of the treaty, agreed to share the land in a spirit of harmony and partnership. And for that we are forever grateful.” The Treaty 6 flag has been flown at City Hall before, but only on a temporary basis on a flagpole reserved for special occasions, events or civic proclamations. This time, a new flagpole has been mounted outside City Hall where the

flag will be flown permanently. The Treaty 6 flag has been placed on the pole nearest the entrance to the building, and flies alongside the flags of Saskatchewan, Canada and the City of North Battleford. “The flag that flies here today is a symbol of the future,” said Wayne Semaganis, chief of Little Pine First Nation. Semaganis called it a good step forward, as was a meeting held last week between the City of North Battleford, Town of Battleford and neighbouring chiefs. “As we move ahead, I am glad to see the leaders of Battleford and North Battleford meeting with the chiefs of the surrounding reserves, because there is a lot of housekeeping we have to do. There has been a lot of neglect in our relationship…. We’ve been excluded for far too long and it’s time that we step up as good neighbours, because basically that’s what treaty is, it’s a good neighbour policy to acknowledge how we’re going to live together, how we’re going to share the future.” The Treaty 6 flag goes up permanently at City Hall on Thursday morning. Among those at the flag raising were Mayor Ryan Bater and Chief Wayne Semaganis of Little Pine First Nation.

A Treaty 6 flag raising coincided with the National Indigenous People’s Day celebrations downtown organized by the Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre. People of all ages and cultures gathered to hear the entertainment on display and to share in feasting at the ever-popular free pancake breakfast, which produced the long lineups along 12th Avenue Thursday morning. Dekker Centre: seeking a profitable balance Continued from Front The Dekker Centre has had to adjust. McGuinty noted the 2018-19 program at the Dekker Centre isn’t as diverse as it used to be. There has been less drama, less dance, less classical music this year. “And that is a balance that we have to try and come to grips with. I mean, if nobody’s going to come, then, you know, at some point you have to pull the plug, which is a shame,” said McGuinty. “On the other hand, and I’ve said it before, you don’t want to change the name to the Dekker Centre Country and Western Saloon. So there’s a balanc-

ing there that we’ve had a very difficult six years trying to reach.” McGuinty also voiced the belief that more vocal promotion of the Dekker Centre by those who support it would go a long way. “We can all be a little more evangelical about saying ‘hey, get your ass off the couch, quit watching the hockey game, and go to a show.’” McGuinty expressed confidence that if that were to happen, in six months the Dekker Centre statements would be in the black again. It was not all doom and gloom in the Dekker report. McGuinty noted the Dekker Centre

McGuinty. “I can only say I know you’ll support my successor as enthusiastically as you supported me, so thank you very much.” In his concluding remarks, Mayor Bater thanked McGuinty on behalf of the people of North Battleford. “You’ve certainly made your mark in this community,” said Bater. “You took a facility that was a dream, an idea, it was a building, and you turned it into an enterprise that we’re all proud of. You’ve done a remarkable job over the last six years, and it’s hard to know what to say other than thank you, and you will be missed.”

did return $20,000 to the City in ticket fees and approximately $35,000 to local performing arts groups. “That is one of our mandates given to us by the City is to promote the local arts community,” said McGuinty. So “while we lost $17 (thousand), we put $50,000 back into the City. And I think that’s what we were supposed to do.” At the end of his presentation, McGuinty thanked council for their support during his time as the manager. “This will be the last time that you will see me making a presentation. Cleansing history is just wrong Dear Editor The recent move to change names of schools, buildings and paintings to cleanse history of references to what we today perceive as politically incorrect is just wrong. We wouldn’t be Canada if it wasn’t for John A Macdonald. We wouldn’t have the tales of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn without Mark Twain’s words. We wouldn’t have the wonderful painting, The Indian Church, without Emily Carr’s thoughtful outlook on the Indian culture of her day. These people were all good people, who contributed greatly to our society, in the context of their day. Yes, we now know we were misguided then, but we need to use these incidences as “teaching moments,” realize whitewashing history can’t correct those wrongs, and learn from it. Emily Carr’s painting title should be left as is. It’s her art. She was supportive and respectful of the native community. And she was known to cuss a lot, and I suspect the renaming of her painting would make her do just that. John A. Macdonald had his warts, as we all do, but overall was a visionary builder of our great nation. Put a plaque in the school telling everyone that today we realize he was misguided regarding the Indian reserve system. Don’t dishonour him by removing his name, but point out that his opinion was wrong then and we are moving, in our day, to correct those wrongs. And rewriting Mark Twain’s literature? We must teach those words were used at that time, it was the history of that day and, fortunately, we have now learned it is disrespectful. Changing words doesn’t erase the wrongs of the past. Use these incidences to teach and learn from. This move to renaming has the potential to be never ending. Where will it end? Changing Davin School in Regina to “Crescent” School? There is no history in that word. Are the people who make these decisions perfect in every way? I doubt it. This is political correctness run amok. Erasing history is time-consuming and expensive. For many reasons, It’s just wrong! Let’s make conscious decisions to make our world today better, not focus on rewriting the past. Backward cleansing is not productive. What is productive is present-day actions, and present-day words. Let’s do our best to make today great. Jean Walker Battleford, Sask.

Respect, kindness alive and well Dear Editor This past Saturday, we had the sad honour of driving in a funeral procession from Sallows and McDonald Funeral Home to the veterans’ section of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens following the funeral of the late David McDonald. From the moment we encountered our first stop sign and continuing through stop and yield signs and red lights, the drivers of every vehicle we met gave us the right-of-way even though the signs and lights gave the right-of-way to them. We were pleasantly astounded to observe the overwhelming number of other drivers we met pull their vehicles to the side of the road, stop, turn on their flashers and wait until the procession had passed. Courtesy and kindness are alive and well in the Battlefords.

Love your city I was fortunate to visit your city this week and particularly enjoyed your Allan Sapp Gallery and the healing garden behind it, as well as the Chapel Gallery and the labyrinth meditations down the stairs behind it. There could be far more opportunities for walking meditation. I appreciate the ones in your city. I’ve stopped to use them every time I pass through for nearly 15 years. Terri McKnight-Beaulac

An essential bucket list item Dear Editor We recently toured the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in Battleford and were amazed by the research, hard work and the love of baseball that was displayed. When you look through the entrance it’s, “Wow, this is amazing.” Making the tour even better was meeting Jane and Ina. These delightful and knowledgeable ladies knew so much about baseball history. This made our day extra special and we really appreciate it. Put this place on your bucket list. Head out to Battleford. Look for a place with a huge baseball bat in the front yard and you’re there. It won’t disappoint. Thanks to the late Dave Shury and to his wife Jane, who is continuing his dream, the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum lives on. Baseball rocks! I was sooo tired of safety seminars, then I slipped up As I tore off the thin layer of skin that had been peeled off an area about the size of a loonie off the top of my foot, I couldn’t help but think back to earlier that morning. I had specifically asked myself, “should I put on my work boots, or can I get away with just wearing my sandals?” Three guesses as to which choice I made. The wrong one. As the dermis (the subflooring of the skin, as it were) quickly turned bright, angry red, having never been meant to be exposed to the air, I hobbled to the front door of the cabin, calling my daughter to get my extensive first aid kit from my SUV. What an idiot, I thought, over and over again. Over the last 10 years, I have gone to more safety seminars, speeches and conferences than you can shake a stick at. I’ve sat through day-long conferences in Regina, Weyburn and Estevan. I’ve scribbled notes at safety stand downs. I’ve filled entire sections of papers with stories from the now-defunct South East Environment and Safety Seminar. I’ve attended almost every event Enform, now Energy Safety Canada, has held in southeast Saskatchewan since I moved here. It had gotten to the point where I was simply tired of hearing the message. I’d even moaned to a few people about the fact these events often bring someone who has been horribly disfigured or maimed because of their own lack of knowledge, lack of attention or that of others. There’s a small

From the top of the pile By Brian Zinchuk

brian.zinchuk@sasktel.net cadre of unfortunate souls who have endured these life-altering, and almost life-ending incidents, and now make a business of speaking at these safety events to warn others. Some have been burned, others electrocuted or chemically burned. One was even shot in the face by his son while hunting. I’d been to so many of them, I just didn’t want to hear it anymore. Yet here I was, building a wheelchair ramp for my step-dad, no less, hobbling to sit on the deck and administer first aid to myself. The wheelchair ramp is necessary because my step-dad had his lower right leg amputated six years ago due to an infection in his foot. He’s diabetic, and so am I. I quite literally nearly had a heart attack building a wheelchair ramp for my parents’ home six years ago. The heart attack came four weeks later. Now, he needed a ramp at the cabin, and I was building it. And in a weird circle of events, I now gave myself a prime spot for a poten-

tial infection, which, if it got away from me, could lead to an amputation for me! (Long-term diabetes is a leading cause of amputations, if not the top one, in this country). As I’ve learned from these seminars, it isn’t just the action that causes the injury, but the choices before, sometimes long before. In this case, I was installing the cement blocks to support the ramp. This meant digging out two inches of sod, replacing that with a similar amount of gravel, and tamping it before installing and levelling the block. Not a lot of gravel, mind you, just a few shovelfuls. I was using a small plastic wheelbarrow to move the sod and gravel. When I dumped the gravel, the wheelbarrow kicked back. The plastic channel holding the axle just caught the top of my exposed foot in my sandal, scraping off the epidermis, or top layer, of skin. I had packed my work boots. They were in the truck. I could have put them on. I thought about

it. I specifically chose not to. This, from a guy who rarely wears his wedding ring, should he end up on an oilfield site in the course of work on any particular day. This is the same guy that insisted everyone wear safety glasses building the cabin deck last summer, and gloves while handling wood. So here I am a week later. I’ve been applying topical antibiotic regularly. My wife, the emergency room nurse, has probably tired of me sticking my foot in her face twice a day, making sure it’s properly inspected. And while it seems to be healing, there is the constant worry that it could get away from me, like it did for my step-dad. In writing this, I realize I, too, am that guy who got injured, and is now preaching the safety message. Fortunately, my injury is just a booboo. I don’t want to think about what they’ve gone through every single day. Next time, I will wear my boots. — Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian. zinchuk@sasktel.net.

KG graduation a first for Education Minister By Josh Greschner Staff Reporter

The party was on at Ecole Monseigneur Blaise Morand Tuesday as the school hosted a graduation ceremony for its kindergarten students. In addition to parents in attendance were Light of Christ administrative staff, Director of Education Cory Rideout and board members. Minister of Education and Deputy Premier Gord Wyant was also in attendance, along with Battlefords MLA Herb Cox. Wyant gave a short speech, saying it was his first time at a kindergarten graduation, and congratulated students and parents. Students sang “Nous sommes tous comme des fleurs,” (we are all like flowers) and received certificates. Stations were at

tables around the gym featuring activities. Wyant was in North Battleford touring Light of Christ schools, including Holy Family Elementary School, Notre Dame Elementary School and St. Mary School, where he was also scheduled to attend a kindergarten graduation. The minister recently visited with Living Sky leadership, along with other school divisions in the province. After Scott Moe was elected premier by Saskatchewan Party members in January, Wyant, who also ran for the premiership, became minister of education and deputy premier. The 2018-19 provincial budget saw an increase of $30 million toward education. 2017-18 featured a $54 million decrease in education funding, which

was challenging for a number of the province’s school boards. Representatives from Light of Christ and Living Sky School Divisions expressed thankfulness regarding the provincial funding increase in 201819. This upcoming school year, the funding affects the two school divisions differently. A significant portion of school division budgets is based on student enrolment. Due to projected student enrolment, Light of Christ’s funding increased approximately $70,000 this school year, while Living Sky’s decreased by $653,000. Living Sky projected approximately 100 less students versus last year. As a result of the changes, Living Sky took measures such as reducing use of substitutes. Funding adjustments

withdrawn by the Crown. The men were both sentenced in North Battleford Provincial Court by Judge Brent Klause. Leask, who appeared by closed-circuit TV from Saskatoon, received a sixyear concurrent sentence less remand time credited at 1.5/1. This means he has five years and 134 days remaining to serve. Whitstone, who appeared in person in court, received a sentence of four and a half years minus six months of remand time, which leaves four years remaining on his jail term.

DNA orders and 10-year mandatory firearms prohibitions were also imposed on both individuals along with an order to not contact the victim. According to the facts outlined in court, the incidents took place at a residential location on 104th Street in North Battleford involving Leask, Whitstone and three other individuals. An altercation with the victim ensued Jan. 14 in which a baseball bat was involved, after which Leask and Whitstone departed.

occur later in the year, and actual student enrolments could cause funding to increase or decrease. Education critic, NDP

MLA Carla Beck, has argued a $30 million increase in 2018-19 isn’t enough to make up for previous decreases.

Wyant was elected trustee for the Saskatoon Public School Board in 2000 and was chair for two years.

They returned Jan. 15, and it was at that time the victim was shot in the leg with buckshot. According to the facts outlined by the Crown, it was Leask who fired the gun, while Whitstone’s role was described as being a party to the offence. Defence lawyer Tanner Daniels described Whitstone’s involvement as helping a friend out in his situation. Dakota Whitstone is the brother of Brydon Whitstone who was shot and killed by an RCMP member in an incident last October in North Battleford. That incident was investigated by Regina police service and was turned over to an independent observer appointed by the ministry of justice. Dakota’s mother was in court to support him during sentencing Wednesday. Defence lawyer Kevin Hill described the situation as one that spun out of control and described his client, Leask, as “apologetic,” and seeking to move on and get his life back on track. Both defence counsel also acknowledged addictions played a role in the case. The court date had originally been scheduled for the first day of Leask’s preliminary hearing. Prosecutor Brenda Korchinski indicated the Crown had been prepared to proceed and the victim had agreed to take the stand. However, a resolution was reached. Korchinski described the victim as “very relieved” that he did not need to testify. Judge Klause agreed to the joint submission of Crown and defence for sentencing, agreeing that the proposed sentence for both individuals was within the range.

has been made into the mental condition of a man charged with second-degree murder. Joshua Tucker appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court again Monday morning by closed-circuit TV. The second-degree murder charge stems from an incident in the Cochin area May 31. Monday, the Crown applied under section 671.11 of the Criminal Code, asking the judge to order an assessment of the mental condition of Tucker. Under this provision of the code, this assessment is to determine whether the accused was, at the time of the commission of the alleged offence, suffering from a mental disorder so as to be exempt from criminal responsibility by virtue of subsection 16(1) of the Criminal Code. The code states: “No person is criminally responsible for an act committed or an omission made while suffering from a mental disorder that rendered the person incapable of appreciating the nature and quality of the act or omission or of knowing that it was wrong.” Judge Bruce Bauer agreed to make the order. The assessment is expected to take place in the coming weeks. Tucker remains in custody. His next court date has been scheduled for July 23 at 11 a.m. by CCTV in North Battleford Provincial Court.

an offence, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of recognizance. He was acquitted on one count of possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition. The decision came down from Judge Brent Klause in North Battleford Provincial Court Friday morning. Moccasin was one of two men charged in connection to the robbery, which took place near Mosquito School in the early hours of Jan. 6. A vehicle was stolen from the scene and was then driven back to Battleford. Moccasin was later apprehended after hiding in the attic of a house on 33rd Street. Police recovered a sawed-off shotgun and a .22 calibre rifle from the vehicle. Klause ruled that the sawed-off shotgun was the firearm discharged at the robbery scene and that Moccasin had also been the driver of the stolen vehicle. Moccasin’s trial took place May 24 and 25 in provincial court. In making his ruling, Judge Klause said he had “no hesitation” accepting, in full, the evidence of the three Crown witnesses from the scene, who testified a robbery took place and that a Chrysler 300 had been stolen. Judge Klause did not accept much of the account of another Crown witness called on the final day of the trial. Her testimony had contradicted the accounts of the other three Crown witnesses on the stand, and Klause noted she seemed to be “endeavouring to help out the accused.” Sentencing of Moccasin has been scheduled for Aug. 24 at 9:30 a.m. The judge has ordered the preparation of a presentence report.

Guilty pleas in connection to January shooting By John Cairns Staff Reporter

Two individuals have entered guilty pleas in connection to incidents from Jan. 14 and 15 of this year. Tim Leask, 45, and Dakota Whitstone, 25, of North Battleford, entered guilty pleas June 20 to assault with a weapon (a baseball bat) and discharging a firearm with intent to wound. All other charges, which included counts of aggravated assault, assault using a weapon and pointing a shotgun, were

City signs collective agreement with CUPE By John Cairns Staff Reporter

The City of North Battleford has signed a new collective agreement with CUPE 287. That is the union representing the vast majority of City workers. The authorization to ratify the agreement was passed unanimously at council Monday. After that, representatives from CUPE local 287 and city officials including Mayor Ryan Bater signed the agreement. The collective agreement expired March 31,

2017. This new agreement runs from April 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2019. Among the highlights of the agreement, outlined by Director of Human Resources Trish McConnell is the change to a December end-date, instead of the end of March as was the case before. This change brings North Battleford in line with the majority of other cities in Saskatchewan. Also included in the collective agreement is the development of a joint position description review committee to review and sign off any changes on

qualifications and primary duties of CUPE job descriptions in job postings, as well as a development of a training policy that will come back to council for review and implementation. “It was months of work together to come to the agreement,” said Bater of the process. He noted both sides seem happy with the outcome. “We both have a common goal in serving the people of North Battleford. We’re glad to have an agreement to allow that to happen.”

Wage increase negotiated in CUPE deal with NWSD Staff

Members of CUPE 4797 have ratified a new collective agreement with the Northwest School Division, based in Meadow Lake. Both the board of education and the local’s bargaining committee signed the deal June 15 The new contract includes a wage increase of 3.75 per cent over three years, improvements to vacation entitlement for caretakers and a number of improvements in language. “Our members are the backbone of the education system and we are pleased our local was able to reach a deal with Northwest School Division,” said Denis Ouellette, president of CUPE Local 4797. The local represents 125 members working as caretakers, bus drivers, library technicians, administrative assistants and educational assistants.

Northwest School Division encompasses a large area of the Northwest including schools in Paradise

Hill, St. Walburg, Turtleford, Glaslyn, Edam, Maidstone, Hillmond, Neilburg and Lashburn.

Husky oil spill case adjourned to Sept. By Josh Greschner Staff Reporter

The matters regarding the Husky oil spill in July 2016 have been adjourned to the fall. Counsel for Husky and federal and provincial Crowns phoned into Saskatchewan provincial court in Lloydminster at 10 a.m. June 21, agreeing on a new court date of Thursday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. Disclosure material has been provided to Husky, according to Carol Carlson of the federal Crown. Brad Gilmour, representing Husky, is reviewing it. This was the second Shown here is the aerial photo of the formalized neighbourhoods and their names which was circulated to councillors at Monday’s council meeting. Council approved the formalized neighbourhoods and their names Monday night. Photo submitted

New neighbourhood names designated By John Cairns Staff Reporter

The long process to formalize neighbourhoods in North Battleford has been completed. Council has voted in favour of approving the new neighbourhoods and their names at Monday’s council meeting. The designations include 10 names that already exist either formally or informally: Killdeer Park, Fairview Heights, Maher Park, McIntosh Park, Centennial Park, College Heights, Deanscroft, Parson’s Industrial Park,

Riverview and Downtown. The new neighbourhood names include Kinsmen Park, Sapp Valley, Paciwin, and Yellow Sky. Kinsmen Park is an obvious choice, referencing the park located in the westside neighbourhood. The latter three names are Indigenous-based, with Sapp Valley being a nod to Allen Sapp, the renowned artist; Paciwin, which is the Cree name of John B. Tootoosis, and Yellow Sky, referencing Chief Yellow Sky. The latter name will be used to refer to the southeast quadrant area.

Administration engaged an elder group organized by Battle River Treaty 6 to assist in the naming of the neighbourhoods. The elder group plans to hold a pipe ceremony near Gold Eagle Casino July 6. The process of naming the neighbourhood has been a long one. Mayor Ryan Bater acknowledged the work of their planning and development team in the process. The plan now is to begin to let the public know about the new neighbourhoods and their names. “The rollout of this will be publicized quite heavily in the coming weeks,” said Bater.

court appearance for Husky in this particular case. Matthew Miazga, representing the provincial Crown, had told reporters in March such adjournments were likely, given the quantity of material. In 2016, approximately 225,000 litres of oil from a Husky pipeline near Maidstone spilled into the North Saskatchewan River. Cleanup efforts continued into 2017. Charges against Husky came in March, and are against two entities, parent company Husky Energy Inc. and Husky Oil Operations Ltd. Each entity faces eight

counts under the federal Fisheries Act and one count each under the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act. Husky Oil Operations Ltd. is also charged with one count under the provincial Environmental Management and Protection Act. Penalties could cost the oil company millions of dollars. Miazga confirmed to the News-Optimist in March the penalty for the provincial offences carries a maximum of $1 million per day for the offence. Federal penalties could be more.

detachment commander of Biggar RCMP. “I would also like to thank the citizens of Biggar and surrounding area for their diligence in reporting information to police. The partnership between Biggar RCMP and our local Rural Crime Watch was extremely valuable in this investigation.” Biggar RCMP responded to information that Stehr was in the RM of Biggar Monday, June 18. A vehicle identified as Stehr’s was located and members activated their emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle failed to stop for police and a pursuit was initiated. Officers from Biggar, Unity and Kindersley/Kerrobert responded and became involved in the pursuit. Following the brief pursuit, officers located the suspect vehicle approximately 1.5 kilometres west of Landis, near Highway 14. The driver was quickly located in a nearby wooded area and was arrested by Biggar RCMP without incident. As a result of this incident Stehr is facing more

charges: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime (less than $5,000), operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, possession of break-in instruments and three counts of failure to comply with a condition of an undertaking. Stehr made his first court appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court June 20. The outstanding warrants from the previous incident were brought forward at this time. He was in court again June 21. The previous incident referenced June 20, occurred between Sept. 17, 2017 and March of this year. Warrants for Stehr’s arrest were issued in March citing the following offences: motor vehicle theft; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; unauthorized use of credit card data; dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; resisting and obstruction of an officer; two counts of failing to comply with a probation order; three counts of failure to attend court; and two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Long list of charges against Paradise Hill man Staff

Biggar RCMP have charged 31-year-old Travis Stehr of Paradise Hill following an assault that occurred June 4 in the RM of Biggar. Stehr is charged with assault with a weapon and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, both criminal code offences. Stehr has also been wanted on charges stemming from incidents that occurred between September 2017 and March of this year. Warrants for Stehr’s arrest were issued in March and RCMP are crediting the public for having a significant role in his apprehension. “I would like to thank the media for helping to bring attention to this investigation,” said Sgt. Colin Sawrenko,

to play on the U15 team. The athletes compete at their respective high schools and with the Battlefords Volleyball Club. Jana Friedenstab has coached the girls, and has

been involved with their development since about Grade 6. Friedenstab said the girls had to go through two different tryout camps, and Neufeld and Cooke played last year. The boys

Volleyball has proven to be especially popular among girls, while boys “seem to drop out of the sport,” Friedenstab said. BVC directs efforts toward developing boys. Competing for the province, Friedenstab said, is important. “Not a lot of kids get this opportunity,” said Friedenstab, who has played on a provincial team. “It’s pretty big that we have this many kids from our community participating in this kind of program.”

Businesses that

Kerr’s Cleaners

North Battleford downtown looked pretty different in the 1940s to how it looks now. One business that has stood the test of time? Kerr’s Cleaners, which was opened in 1946 by Chic Kerr on his return from the war and was bought by Battleford native Cassandra Germsheid and Jesse Crozier of Biggar in 2016. The couple operate the business with the help of Germsheid’s parents, Scott and Jayne Foster. “Mr. Kerr was all about customer service and we still have customers now that remember him and speak of him fondly,” says Germsheid. “He also kept his business strong by offering alteration and laundry services as well as dry cleaning – he was really ahead of his time.” She and Crozier are now keen to continue that legacy, broadening the scope of the business still further with linen and uniform rentals and a wet-wash option as an alternative to dry cleaning. “Some people don’t like the smell of dry-cleaning chemicals and it is a greener option so it’s something we can offer our

customers if they’d prefer,” Germsheid says. “However, dry-cleaning is still the best option for some fabrics and situations. We’ve quickly become experts in fabrics and stain removals so can offer advice to customers on the best options for them.” Kerr’s carefully handles any item you need cleaned, from hats and some leather items to feather duvets and wedding dresses. It also offers alterations and repairs. “We’ve often been able to save something that people thought they’d have to get rid of, whether it’s because of a stain or damage to the fabric. These can sometimes be items with a lot of sentimental value – like afghans made by someone’s grandmother. And then sometimes it’s just a case of making your life easier by sewing on a button or fixing a hem,” says Germsheid. Speaking of making your life easier, Kerr’s will also pick up and drop off your items, free of charge (within city limits), whether it’s a single suit or a bale of blankets. Germsheid says it all comes back to Mr Kerr’s desire to serve his community. “He and his wife were both well known for that, and it’s something we’d like to continue. Right now we’re doing small sponsorships and over time, we’d like to get even more involved,” she says. “It’s all about participating and supporting. Jesse and I have four children, and it’s important to us that they learn to value community, too.” Kerr’s Cleaners is at 1152-100th Street, North Battleford. The Shellbrook Hotel

In 1909, shortly after the railway arrived, George Stalker and his partner Howard Hudson spared no expense building the grand, three-storey Shellbrook Hotel on the corner of Railway Avenue and Main Street, directly across from the train station. Originally from Portage la Prairie, Man., Stalker came to Prince Albert in 1896 where he worked for a time in the harness-making business before getting into the hotel business. He and W. E. Gladstone took over the Queen’s Hotel in Prince Albert; he later acquired the Royal Hotel in that city. In 1905, Stalker in partnership with Hudson, built a three-storey hotel in Kinistino. Stalker assumed sole ownership of the Shellbrook Hotel in 1915, and eventually disposed of all his other hotel interests. He died in 1931 at age 56, and his widow, Anne Stalker, continued to run the hotel until 1941, when she sold it to Mr. and Mrs. James E. Bowles of Netherhill.

Railway and Main By Joan Champ

joanchamp@shaw.ca In March of 1935, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix reported that the 30-room Shellbrook Hotel was operated on the American plan, meaning meals were included in the room rate. “Mrs. Stalker and her assistants do everything to make the hotel a real home away from home,” the newspaper stated. Prime Minister W.L. Mackenzie King clearly thought so when he stayed at the Shellbrook Hotel during the May 1945 federal election campaign. By that time, the hotel was owned and operated by George Laycock. “After dinner I went to my room and prepared the outline of a speech,” King wrote

A

in his diary. “It was like old times to look out of the window and to see motor cars ranged on both sides of the road. ... I rested a few minutes on my back then went on to the hall, shaking hands with many people on the way.” Just as he was exiting the Shellbrook Hotel, King encountered four-year-old Bobbie George. The Regina Leader-Post reported the prime minister smiled down at Bobbie and shook his hand. King then took the little boy’s arms and waved them to the small crowd on the Shellbrook street corner, saying, “I want you all to go home and tell your parents to vote for Mackenzie King,”

making Bobbie one of the youngest campaigners for the prime minister. Lou and Donna Dupuis bought the Shellbrook Hotel from Floyd and Evelyn Folden in 1978. Over the next two years, they added a steak pit and remodeled the guest rooms. The couple undertook a major expansion in 1990, building a 52- by 20-foot addition to accommodate a banquet room downstairs,

a cocktail lounge on the main floor, and three more guest rooms. Dupuis told the Shellbrook Chronicle that year the expansion was a necessary investment in the hotel. “With the government pricing liquor out of sight, we just had to diversify with more rooms and in the food area,” he said. “When we first bought the hotel, a beer was 85 cents – now it is $2.40.”

In 2015, the Dupuis made more extensive changes to the exterior and interior of the Shellbrook Hotel. The building’s red brick exterior was covered with smooth, brown stucco, and the hotel’s restaurant was changed from Luigi’s Steak Pit & Ribs to The Railhouse. There’s lots of variety on the menu along with traditional bar fare, including steaks, sandwiches and wings. 18065TT0 18065TT1

Parking and security changes at BUH Submitted

Sask. Health Authority

Patients and visitors, along with staff and physicians, will notice changes coming to both parking and building access at Battlefords Union Hospital effective Tuesday, July 3. “The improvements are the result of review, planning and collaboration among numerous members of the BUH health care team and patient advisors. Patients have asked for improved parking and access,” said Mitchel Smith, Saskatchewan Health Authority

NBeezwax

facilities maintenance manager at BUH. “We thank our patient advisors for their input, and BUH staff and physicians for their work and support in getting these improvements in place.” Patient parking stalls will soon be available at the front of the hospital, with the lot being designated for patient parking only, including stalls reserved for chemotherapy, dialysis and maternity patients. Two ‘Patient Unloading/ Loading Zones’ are being provided adjacent to the access ramps. The area was previ-

ously primarily for parking by staff and physicians. Parking will also no longer be permitted along the entrance/exit laneway beneath the hospital’s main entrance canopy. The size and number of stalls designated for persons with limited mobility will be increased. These are located in the parking area west of the hospital’s main entrance. The northern 75 per cent of the main parking lot on the west side of the hospital has been designated for patient and visitor parking only. Patients and visitors

can park in the southern 25 per cent of the main west lot, as can employees. Signage will clearly identify these areas. Other changes include rehabilitation of pedestrian walkways leading to and from the hospital entrance, plus line painting and improved lighting and signage. As part of site improvements, access to the hospital will be controlled and monitored each night beginning at 8 p.m. The exterior main doors to the hospital will remain unlocked, while the interior main entry doors will be secured.

Those accessing the hospital during these hours will use a buzzer and speaker system located in the main entrance foyer. The buzzer and speaker will be manned by the security personnel located inside the hospital lobby. Patients needing care will be promptly permitted into the hospital. Visitors allowed in after 8 p.m. will follow existing processes and policies. A second security person was introduced in February this year to support patient and visitor flow during overnight hours. “This additional change

to after-hours access is the latest in a series of initiatives that have been implemented at BUH,” said Shelly Horsman, Saskatchewan Health Authority’s director of Acute Care for Battlefords Union Hospital. “Door security systems throughout the hospital have been upgraded, along with video and camera surveillance. Coupled with the additional improvements outside the hospital and in the adjacent parking lots, BUH is aiming to enhance safety and security for patients, providers and the public.”

Staff North Battleford Comprehensive High School student Ahmed Ali has earned a $1,000 RBC bursary at graduation to help him pursue engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in the fall. According to an RBC press release, the bursary program celebrates graduating high school students who are inspirational in their dedication to community, fellow students and academics. “Ahmed is not only able to balance school, work, athletics and volunteer work, but as a new Cana-

dian, he also thrives in his new environment, as he is originally from Pakistan,” the release states. “He quickly embraced the country and rose up to the challenges of living in a new culture, facing new hardships and establishing himself in a new environment.” Ahmed earned an 84 per cent average in high school and has been on the honour roll for the past two years. He is an International Baccalaureate student with a goal to become a mechanical engineer. He speaks fluent Urdu and flawless English, and works diligently to keep up

with his studies, the release states. Ahmed has been on the NBCHS badminton team for five years. When he is not working or at school, he is on the court. The Serafina meeting with the public in the Meota Community Complex June 21 went well. Questions were answered as put forth. A goodly number of people attended, as this project is drawing interest from the local population. The next Meota East SAGD Thermal Project is being set up on 16-46-16 W3, east of the 13-mile corner, north of the city. A water line will run crosscountry to the North Saskatchewan River. The new Spiritwood Pharmacy opened in the corner location where the former Shop-Easy grocery store was located. It is larger with better working conditions for staff and more room for customers to move about. It is exciting to enter this modern facility after being used to the crowded store next door to the local hotel, where Gary von Holwede has been for 20 years. Some stock that wasn’t moved to the new store is still available in the old one. The original store was built by Everett

Konsmo in 1946 and was operated by them for many years. Next pharmacist was Ray Meier who sold to Roy Folkerson in 1977. He ran it until 1983. Happy Birthday greetings go out to Gladys Lehma. She turned 96 June 18. Her family gathered on the patio at River Heights Lodge for Chinese supper. Her children are Betty Desmarais, Louise Kok and Les and Doug Lehman. I watched a robin the other morning picking away at the sandbags in front of the four-plex. When it had several pieces in his beak, he flew off. He must be building another nest and that stuff would stick nicely with mud. Doreen Baynes is in Rose Gill Lodge in Rabbit Lake and celebrated her 84th birthday June 20. There was birthday cake in the afternoon for everyone and cake again for the evening gathering. She

was happy to have family and friends visit and received many phone calls, one from relatives in Australia. We are enjoying seeing and hearing a pair of ringed-turtle doves in the village, that have been coming for several years. In my bird book they are listed as in California and Florida, so seem out of place here. It is the only dove with the black crescent band on a back of its neck. Duplicate bridge was played in Meota June 19 and top score went to Robert Iverson and Linda Ard. Second went to Bernard and Lucille Gregoire, third to Margaret Dyck and Maureen Campbell. In the Pioneer Hall in the city June 21, top score went to Jean Lawes and Fraser Glen, second to Donna Scherman and Catriona Winterholt and third to Maureen Campbell and Mary Phelps. There were 24 players out making for a busy, fun evening. The new sidewalk by the new building on 2nd Avenue is looking pretty nice and is making the old section south of it look

pretty awful. In fact it is so weathered it is almost too rough to walk on. The family of Guy and Yolande Houle held a special family gathering at the home of their son Jerry and Karen at Big Shell Lake June 16 and 17 to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. When they moved to Spiritwood in 1958 they had three boys, Rupert, Roland and Jerry, another four children were born in Spiritwood, Anita, Larry, Michelle and Norman

(deceased). Their family has grown to include 14 grandchildren and 10 greats, with one more due in August. They spent two days of fun and games at Big Shell Lake. The time with the little ones during the day was precious, and story time around the campfire at night brought out many confessions and memories. It was a priceless time of reminiscing. The Houles enjoyed raising their family in Spiritwood and have many

good friends there still and lots of precious memories. They retired to Saskatoon in 1999, but love to return to Spiritwood for visits and look forward to every visit by family members or friends at their home in Saskatoon. They appreciate every member of their family and love their company any time. An interesting definition of income tax is the fine one pays for being a useful, productive and contributing member of society.

Graduation weekend can evoke mixed emotions By Sherri Solomko Correspondent

Eugene Hartter of Wilkie Elks No. 568 is serving a one-year term as president of the Saskatchewan Elks. Photo by Helen Urlacher

Hartter Sask. Elks president By Helen Urlacher Correspondent

The Wilkie Elks have been a part of fabric of since 1927 when Wilkie Lodge No.65 was formed. It continued until it was closed at the outbreak of the Second World War. The present day Wilkie Elks No. 568 was formed June 17, 1978 with 56 members and the lodge is still an active part of the community and district. Wilkie Elks member Eugene Hartter became the president of the Elks of Saskatchewan in a ceremony June 9 in Kindersley. It was a proud and emotional moment for Hartter, his wife and strongest supporter Charlotte, family and friends of the Wilkie Elks. Hartter was born and raised in the town of Wilkie. Hartter, after a suggestion from his father-in-law, became an Elk and has been a strong and committed supporter of the organization and what it has done and continues to do for the community, district and province. Hartter became a member of the Elks Lodge 34 years ago. He joined the Grand Lodge as a district representative in 1986, before it changed to the Elks Provincial Association. He was the district representative for 22 years, holding many positions throughout the years. Hartter also spent 18 years working on an addiction awareness program, which was delivered in conjunction with the Peace 100. He has been an active member and has sat as an executive on every level within the Elks organization. When asked about his fondest memory of being with the Elks, Hartter said, “There are so many memories, like meeting the kids from the SPARC (Saskatchewan Pediatric Auditory Rehabilitation Centre) program, those we were able to help in cases of fire or hospital visits. The parents’ smile when we hand them a cheque with expenses, the list goes on and on. “But the fondest mem-

ory for me personally was last year when myself and members of the Elks from all over Canada, along with the Elks mascot, Charlie, went to Langley, B.C. to a Salvation Army evacuee camp, which held over 500 people. We loaded a truck full of colouring books and soccer balls and handed them out the kids. Their smiles were the big thing.” When Hartter found out that he was going to be president of the Elks of Saskatchewan, he was “very emotional, the Elks are family.” During the installation, Ron Potter from Moosomin participated in the induction ceremony. Potter had made a commitment to Hartter eight years ago that when he did become president of the Elks, Potter would be there to help install Hartter as president. During his term Hartter will make 21 visits to northern areas of Saskatchewan and travel to communities that haven’t had a presidential visit for more than three years. There is also a convention in Regina in July, a walk-a-thon in Estherhazy in October and in December he will be visiting the local lodges as district representative and president. A provincial conference in Moose Jaw in 2019 will end Hartter’s reign, but that’s not where he will stop. Hartter is already looking into the future with a position with the Grand Lodge, which is going to start working with the Elks of Canada in 2019. In a quote from the 1927 Wilkie Press, Al Vandrick is said: “Who and what are the Elks? The Elks are comprised of the best people on earth. The BPOE aims to promote the best interests of the town and district in which they are established. It is a community service club. It seeks to make life sweeter and the world happier.”

This weekend’s activities will evoke multiple emotions as graduates celebrate their successful completion of high school. Parents may be feeling melancholy, wondering how 12 years went by so quickly. And, those who welcomed these students into their lives the last several years at UCHS will already be missing them, knowing how different the next school year will be. Everyone is wishing these graduates a safe and happy graduation celebration weekend. As school is now down to report card distribution, both staff and students are looking forward to a welldeserved summer break, knowing eight weeks will fly by quickly. July 1 is this Sunday and the organizers of this year’s Canada Day activities would love to the see their efforts be rewarded with a good turnout at the museum. Events include a church service, booth, en-

tertainment, rides, bouncy castles, cake and balloons as well as fireworks on the northwest corner of town at dusk. The museum grounds play host to Canada Day festivities but they are hoping you spend a summer of visits there and bring along your visiting guests, too. Museum committee members spend much time getting everything ready for viewing in the summer as well as keeping the grounds in great shape. They are thankful to Unity Credit Union and Delta Co-op for completing the deck on the new office. The museum is not just stuff, it’s stories behind every artifact there is history and without visitors they cease to have a purpose. This venue is leaps above many other small town museums in its layout, variety of historical buildings

As Saskatchewan Rush season ticket holder, Sherri Solomko stopped in the Rush office the morning of June 21 and got up close and personal with the championship cup won June 9. The cup has been making stops around the province with a variety of players. The Rush were moved from Edmonton after they won this cup in 2015. In their first year in Saskatchewan, they captured the 2016 championship at home. In 2017, they lost the final to the Georgia Swarm but they would not be denied in 2018 as they captured the series with the Rochester Nighthawks giving them their third NLL title in four years. Irene was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She died at the age of 88 in the Peter Lougheed hospital in Calgary with her family at her side. She was born on a farm and moved to North Battleford where she and her husband, Bill began almost 60 years of married life. Together they raised a family, worked hard and travelled the world. She was a military wife who walked beside royalty and supported “the boys” every step of the way. She never forgot her roots or the values she taught us along the way. Her life was filled with music and she shared her talents with countless others until late in her life. Regardless of what she was doing at the time, she would break into song and have everyone singing before they knew it. She had a tremendous love of life. She enjoyed summers at Turtle Lake where friends and family gathered almost every summer weekend. In addition to her mother-bear like protection of her family, she attracted life long friends. Her family was deeply touched by the 113th Street Honour Guard was formed in tribute at her funeral. She is left to mourn her passing by her loving Children: Son, David (Judy) Warwick, Lethbridge, AB and Daughters: Susan (Brian) Sandberg, Chestermere, AB, Bobbi Joan O’Neil and Janie (Robert) Warwick of Calgary, AB; Grandchildren: Jennifer (Ron) Thatcher, Thomas Warwick, Bob (Alexei) Warwick, Matthew O’Neil, Patrick O’Neil, Sarah Sandberg and Katie Beardsworth; Great-Grandchildren: Danielle and Russell Thatcher and close relatives including all her nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Predeceased by her Husband, William Remington (Bill) Warwick, Parents: Rufus and Myrtle Brooks and brother Gordon Brooks. A Celebration Of Life was held on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. from St. Paul’s Anglican Church, North Battleford, Saskatchewan with Minister Rev. Trevor Malyon. CARD OF THANKS The family of Irene Warwick would like to thank everyone who has shown their love and support following her passing. Thank you all for the flowers, cards and hugs. Thank you to St. Paul’s Anglican Church Rev. Trevor Malyon, choir, and ACW ladies for the lovely rose ceremony. A special thank you to our 113th Street family - old friends can never be forgotten. Appreciation is also extended to Bob MacKay and Battlefords Funeral Services for your help and compassion. We cannot forget all the doctors, nurses and medical staff in Calgary that were there for her over the years. There is a special place in our hearts for her family doctor in Chestermere who always made her feel better no matter what was the case. David, Susan, Bobbi Joan and Janie and families ___________________________________________________

I wish I could see you one more time, Come walking through the door... But I know that is impossible, I will hear your voice no more. I know you can feel my tears And you don’t want me to cry, Yet my heart is broken because I can’t understand why someone So precious had to die. I pray that God will give me strength And somehow get me through... As I struggle with the heartache That came When I Lost You.

Sympathy goes out to the Mills family of the Battlefords and the Buckle and Flannigan families of Prince Albert on the recent passing of Molly Flannigan (nee BucklePreston), Stanley Mills’ last surviving aunt. Walter Olive, Stanley Mills and Elaine Theriault attended the funeral in Prince Albert. Sympathy goes out to the Greer and Rowlands families on the recent passing of Robert Greer. Robert was born in Spinney Hill on Oct. 22, 1936. As a baby he and the family moved to Elkhorn, Man. He moved back to the Sonningdale area in 1953 to work for his uncle and other farmers. He married Irene Rowlands in 1956 and farmed in the Baljennie area for a short time. Then they moved to Saskatoon and later to Edmonton, Alta. where he worked as a plasterer. The family returned to Baljennie area to work on a farm in 1964. They were able to purchase more land and moved the Consolidated elevator house in Baljennie to the old Tom Boulton yard. They added an addition to the house. They had a family of two daughters and five sons. Robert continued to farm while Irene drove school bus for a number of years. When Robert wasn’t able to do the farm work anymore a grandson took over. He was an activite member of the Baljennie community and was involved with the Baljennie Multiple 4-H Club. He

served as councillor for the RM of Glenside for a good many years. Robert remained on the farm, in failing health, after spending a few days at Battlefords Union Hospital. He passed away June 20 at the age of 82. A celebration of life was held June 24 at the Battlefords Agricultural Society grounds and he will be laid to rest in the Baljennie St. Bridgete’s Cemetery at a later date. Visiting with Stanley and Dorothy Mills was their only daughter, Elaine Theriault of Mississauga, Ont., and their youngest son, Glen Mills of Penticton, B.C. More work bees have been held at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford to repair the antique gas tractors and stationary engines. One by one they are getting some completed. It takes a lot of time to do all the little fiddly jobs required. More work bees will be held. The next one is Friday, June 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hopefully some of these antiques will be ready for Those Were the Days coming up in August. A big thank you goes out to all the volunteers who come to the museum to help. After such a long, cool spring, hot summer weather is here. Now there is a need for a soaking rain shower to help the crops. There has been some hail

Museum hosts July 1 events By Dorothy Schwartz Correspondent

MAIDSTONE — The Maidstone Museum has been a busy place since opening June 1. Christine Carlson has been the tour guide most days with the assistance of Mae Hinde. A crew has been in and re-shingled the CNR building and the church. June 18, the former Kay 40s had their annual social evening and barbecue at the museum. June 19, a group of seniors came by handi-van from Turtleford for a cold plate lunch and a tour of the museum. On their way home they visited Shilo Church with Dorothy Schwartz as tour guide. The museum is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. The July 1 parade will start at 11 a.m. Opening ceremonies are at noon.

Judging of decorated bicycles, children’s games and face painting will be some of the events during the day. There will also be a slow tractor race, horseshoe tournament, threshing demonstration, children’s races and straw scramble. Also offered will be stage entertainment, bingo and guided tours of the museum. Food booths and a beer gardens round out a full slate of activities with something for everyone. Come and join the celebration. The museum will host a farmers market every Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. Tables are free to all types of vendors. Come and sell baking, crafts, vegetables, plants, books and more. No pre-registration is required. There will be something new to see every week. For further information call Dorothy at 306-893-2663.

Looking like you have the boss’s authority Ed, my old neighbour from Saskatchewan, says, “Power attracts people, who like to run things and be bossy.” My old neighbour contends that some people will never be satisfied unless they are seen and heard. Who the leader is and those who are leading will, with him, always bring positive and negative reactions. Some folks do like to be in positions of authority, while others would rather let someone else lead. Many would rather criticize their leader than lead themselves and be criticized. When you are not in leadership positions, it is effort-

less to feel those leading should accomplish the impossible. Achieving the impossible is only a problem if you need to do it. Ed believes a pastor or a clergy person has the power and authority in a church. I told him that is because he does not attend a church. I informed Ed that God and His word should be the final authority in a church, but it is impossible to get people to let God be God. Instead of listening to and following God’s word, folks may ignore it, argue with it and challenge God’s word. In the Bible two of Jesus’s disciples, James and John, came up to Jesus

and tried to get Jesus to say he would give them what they were going to ask of Jesus. Jesus did not promise to give them what they asked, but told them to tell him what they wanted. They wanted to sit with him in his glory, one on his right and one on his left. They seemed to be thinking

regarding earthly glory. Jesus would be sitting in leadership at Jerusalem with earthly power and authority. They wanted to be Jesus’s advisors, those closest to him as the ruler in Jerusalem. James and John had an understanding that being a ruler or leader meant lording it over people. Like the Gen-

tiles, they believed leaders should exercise authority over other people like a boss. Leaders should give orders not take them. They felt leaders should be served not serve. Jesus told James and John that he could not promise they could sit beside him. God the Father would decide who would sit next to him in glory. The other disciples were indignant that James and John would ask for a special privilege with Jesus beyond themselves. Jesus used it as an opportunity to teach them that He was not on Earth to boss people around, but give his life as a ransom for

sinners. Jesus was on Earth to serve not to be served. Jesus was an authority figure from God who was called by God his Father, to act in His authority of love. God’s way of doing things is never about an arrogant or self-serving power. Jesus invited his disciples to learn of leading by serving, by wanting to be last not first. His disciples would be given the opportunity to do what was best for others not what was best for themselves. Most do not like the idea of being a servant. Many want to lead, but few want to follow. Who will serve God by obeying His word and example in Christ?
