cultural language centre The Cultural Language Centre is to be designed for community involvement, therefore with focus on first and second generation immigrants, the intention is to enhance communication between the users as well as to create connection for users to the spatial qualities. The centre will be a collective space where multiple activities can take place at once through appropriate divisions of public and private spaces. Depending on the areas, the colour schemes are chosen accordingly to minimize distraction and maximize productivity, creativity, and wellbeing. Moreover, the centre is to accommodate both independant learning and group work, thus will integrate various zones to meet a variety of standards and preferences. The main requirements as well as goals for the space were accessibility, sustainability, and proper segregations of space. The design was aimed to challenge conventional educational institutions and was instead presented through a creative and aesthetically pleasing environment which prioritizes functionality and user behaviour. 10

The interior structures were informed by the building’s exterior extension. Playing with scale and proportions, the skewed rectangular attribute was applied to custom light fixtures, furnishings, as well as surface elements in order to achieve cohesion and identity.
Three primary finishes, corten, oak, and concrete, were used to highlight destinations and contrast surfaces. Heavier features were balanced out with light and open elements.

form development The form development was inspired by the nodes detected on the site maps as they represent modes of connection. Through multiple iterations, the intention was to maximize the connection between the users not only to the associated programs, but also to the exterior site inventories and nature. Therefore, the form was skewed just enough to maintain its structural rectangular quality, while providing the users with an extended horizontal and vertical view. AXONOMETRIC Harmony is a combination of a music cafĂŠ, open to the public, and a private co-working office space. The users are to share a unique and creative environment which aims to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency. The design of the space focuses mainly on acoustics and the use of natural materials, organic forms, and abstract lines to convey the overall atmosphere. Because the building is a heritage building, one of the key elements to maintain was the rich and historic qualities found on its exterior boundaries. Bringing the outside to the inside is a concept that communicates the entire project as the design was initially inspired by the many local buskers stops that do not fulfill the needs of that part of society. Consequently, Harmony is a project which can hopefully become the basis of a wondrous opportunity.

The focal point of the main floor is the stage where local artists and the target group of people perform alongside a café surrounding it. The stage is a two-way flexible unit as it is elevated 1’-0” above the finished floor and because placing a ramp would require a large area and take away from the design, the front of the stage is an accessible stage at the floor level. As shown, there is also stairs adjacent to it, what was intended with that element was an elevated view, mimicking the balcony seat views in an opera house. Underneath it will be an immersive transition zone related to the difference in acoustic volumes, similar to a gallery space, but for sound.

Majority of the furniture are custom millwork. This was to suit the flexibility of the designed space and also to accommodate the design language. Conveyed through linear angles and complex curves, the custom furniture are to fit smoothly along the surfaces and / or to perform as versatile units which could be re-arranged to suit one’s desire / needs.

LE TOTE The concept of the project was to design a brickand-mortar store for an online retailer. In this case, Le Tote, a professional clothng brand, was an appropriate selection to incorporate as the site is surrounded by office institutions. On their website, customers fill out a survey to arrive at a selection of items narrowed down to their preferences. Going futher with this concept, customers would appoint with a consultant and fill out a style profile which consequently informs them the clothing they prefer. Hence, they get assigned a personal stylist to come back for an appointment where they will have a selection of styles suited for their needs. ENTRYWAY The entry is located on the east side to benefit from the newly establishing True North and to make it easily accessible to people with vehicles as parking is highly limited in the area. The exterior faรงade consists of an indented fenestration so that passersby could glance into the store. Because the displays are quite light and are primarily along the walls to emphasize the openness of the space, the indented fenestration is a technique to allow them to grasp a full view, which will potentially draw them into the store.
35
36
CASH DESK In order to emphasize the quality of the promoted merchandise, the concept of metal rods is implemented to serve as display racks. The rods are to express the primary accent colour and material within the space and function as framings and hanging racks along the walls against a white background. The technique of framing is used to distinguish different zones.

Under the atrium, the lounge for consultation as well as the personal clothing viewing area is placed as they are the most active zones. They are to take advantage of the natural lighting and the open space. The fitting rooms are custom designed; they have a semi-partition in front of the opening to provide privacy. The partitions have rods which continue around to serve as racks. The rods ease the process of stylist-to-client activity and serve as trial and return racks.
E2
South Viewing Area Elevation NTS
FITTING ROOMS As for materials, the goal was to achieve a bold, yet simple look. Because the merchandise to display will be rather heavy and more neutral in colour, the design of the space is to conceive balance and harmony. Most walls are white gypsum boards because it brightens up the space and makes the ambience lighter, whereas some are black to create contrast between the self-standing metal rods. The colour scheme goes applies to the ceiling elements as well as the lighting; the black is carried onto the ceiling to emphasize the metal. Because this feature makes the space quite heavy, white porcelain tiles are used for flooring to achieve balance. View to Fitting Rooms

virn centre The VIRN Resource Centre is a non-profit organization which promotes an inclusive society, open for all, with primary focus on those with vision impairment. They aim to build positivity, productivity, confidence, and inclusivity for the people through affective programs and activities (VIRN, 2018). The new VIRN Resource Centre will act as a vocational facility for those with blindness and vision impairment; the inclusive centre will allow the users to socialize, learn and work within a comfortable and flexible environment. The concept was inspired by organic forms and textural elements which “envelop the users and create a soothing and comfortable environment, thus producing a sense of belonging and inclusion in the space. The design will allow users to navigate the space independently and identify specific areas supported by a natural yet contrasting colour palette. The primary elements in the space are the fabric ceiling installation, which informs direction, and the patterned flooring with concentrated areas, which indicates destination zones. With acoustics also being a fundamental component to consider, composing a balanced volume of sound echo and sound-proofing was critical; this was aimed to be achieved by the ceiling installation in collaboration with the other materials used in the space. Using the information presented by the VIRN representatives, the group focused primarily on developing effective wayfinding techniques while maintaining balance throughout the entire space. The main challenge was to create a floor pattern which differentiates from surrounding surfaces and provides a clear tactile as well as visual contrast, while also allowing the users to easily detect areas. This was achieved through the use of navy terrazzo (with a slip-resistant finish), with zinc transition strips (9/16”H x 1/2”W) which raise above the floor (1/16”) in concentrated areas only (height ensured to prevent tripping hazards). The pattern indicates direction, however, it also coincides with the curvilinear forms associated with the concept of “enveloping”. This meets the language found on the ceiling installations without competing with it. In addition, the concentrated areas are to include sensory technology which informs the users, through automated audio devices, about their location and directs them to nearby destinations (“Shoptalk” technology).

Metal inlays for navigation/direction 46
Sliding walls with fabric finish to enhance tactility as well as acoustics. Walls to open to accommodate a larger capacity Wall under-lighting to indicate direction, emphasize material transition, and generate an evenly-lit space
TRANSITION As for the ceiling, the sheer fabric material generates a cohesive language in the space and creates a unified environment by linking the building from the point of entry to the exit. The initial concept is achieved mainly through the ceiling as it translates the VIRN Centre into a soothing and comfortable environment. Custom LED linear lighting rests alongside the installation, matching the curves, to provide an even distribution of lighting into the space.
47
Furniture selected for user friendliness and safety purposes (fits concept to ‘hug’ the user and provide comfort) 48
Application of window film on exterior glazing to reduce glare and prevent heat gain
CAFE VIEW The method used in the ceiling installation was a solution to concealing distracting ceiling elements such as direct lighting (which may be of high intensity to some users) and surface material. To better accommodate the preferences of various users, light levels are to be controlled through window coverings (blinds and window films) to prevent shadows, glare, as well as heat gain.
