To help the environment in a big way, buy products that are environmentally friendly and durable. Buy appliances and computers with the energy star label and use products (like paper and plastics) made with recycled material. Green procurement can also be healthy. Water-based paints and environmental cleaning products are good for the Earth and your health.

Community Huddle 21 March: The Community Huddle is a bi-monthly, Town Hall style meeting, hosted by Garrison Commander COL James Saenz, for all community members to ask questions to civilian and military leadership and to find out the latest information on programs, events, construction, and other important issues happening in the community. Tuition Assistance suspended Due to our current fiscal situation, Soldiers can no longer submit new requests for Tuition Assistance through the GoArmyEd portal. Soldiers currently enrolled and participating in courses approved for tuition assistance are not affected and will be allowed to complete current course(s) enrollment. Soldiers can continue to access their GI Bill benefits, if applicable (either the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) or the Post 9/11 GI Bill), or use another funding sources (i.e. grants, scholarships, or Army National Guard Soldiers using state Tuition Assistance). Soldiers should be encouraged to contact their local education centers for additional information. Updated information will also be posted to www.goarmyed.com. The Army understands the impact of this decision and will re-assess as the fiscal situation matures.

In April, the physical fitness centers at USAG Grafenwoehr will save more than $56,000 a year by discontinuing towel services.

Energy Conservation Hotline updates Due to the Energy Conservation Hotline and input from members of the community, we have received a number of suggestions of how USAG Grafenwoehr can cut energy costs. Here are some suggestions the garrison have followed up on and taken steps to address:    

Turning off the scoreboard at VHS when it is not in use. Installing motion sensors for carports in on-post housing. Turning off the fans in the Rose Barracks DFAC. Disabling half the lights in Grafenwoehr Bldg. 206 to use half the energy.

We thank the community for having great ideas to help us cut costs and save energy. Keep ‘em coming! Email tips to usarmy.grafenwoehr.imcom-europe.list.bmc-energy-hotline@mail.mil.

We’re doing our part. Are you? The marquees are a great way to get information out to the community. But, we need to save energy, too. So, to do our part, we’re limiting the marquees’ hours of operation on both East Camp and Rose Barracks from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Every little bit helps!

How to properly perform Retreat in the BMC Retreat is a daily ceremony held at all Army installations as the national flag is lowered at the end of the day. In the BMC, retreat occurs at 5 p.m. with a bugle call followed by “To the Colors.” All personnel driving on the installation must stop. Service members and government civilian personnel will turn off their vehicles, and if safe to do so, exit their vehicles and render the appropriate honors. Individuals outside of buildings will render the appropriate honors to the flag during the Retreat ceremony. Service members in uniform render the hand salute at the first note of “To the Colors.” Normally the flag is faced when saluting unless duty requires you to face in another direction. At the conclusion of the music resume your regular duties.

Sequestration requires careful planning Sequestration planning requires teamwork from IMCOM Europe and partners like USAREUR, DeCA, DoDDS and many others. Taking steps to conserve funding while still providing reliable service and looking after our Soldiers, civilians and families takes careful planning. We will share the results of that planning as soon as possible.

New DPW Self-Help Store guidelines In an effort to better control the costs of issuing items from the Self-Help Store, DPW asks the community to abide by these procedures:  Authorized customers requesting toilet seat, towel holder and toilet paper holder assemblies need to bring in and exchange their old item to be issued a new one.  Customers getting paint for their personal quarters will be limited to two plastic paint containers. Those who need more paint for their project, will have to return to the Self-Help Store to request it once they have used up the paint they’ve already been issued.  Authorized customers requesting Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) must bring in an old bulb/CFL to get a new one. Exchanging the old bulb/CFL ensures that the customer gets the correct CFL and that the old bulb/CFL is properly disposed. For any questions, or those wishing to request an exception must contact DPW at DSN 475-6172, CIV 09641-83-6172 or DSN 475-8068/1560, CIV 09641-83-8068/1560 or DSN 475-8098, CIV 09641-83-8098.

Cut in office cleaning services Due to new fiscal realities, we must cut costs or we will be forced to cut family services. As such, we will be cutting the cleaning contract for administrative offices on East Camp and Rose Barracks from once per week to twice per month. It is recommended that directors talk with their staff to make plans to remove trash and keep their work areas clean. This change will not affect common area customer service locations or common use restroom service, but will save the garrison significant funds over the next year. These savings can then be funneled into maintaining high traffic areas.

Shuttle bus operations during dangerous road conditions Red and Black Road Conditions: As we brace for winter, we remind the community that community shuttle/housing area buses will not operate in red or black road conditions. If conditions elevate to red or black after departure from post, drivers will immediately return to base unless the driver determines he can continue without endangering the safety of persons and equipment. Customers that are already onboard will normally be transported to post. Should road conditions rapidly develop to a critical level and continued operation would be a hazard, the driver will stop at the next available safe parking lot and inform TMP and/or Staff Duty Office of the situation. After conditions improve, routes will commence at their next regularly scheduled time. Work Delays/Early Releases: When a two-hour work delay is authorized, all bus routes originating before 8 a.m. will not run. They will initiate service at their next regularly scheduled run. If an early release is directed, runs 6 and 7 of Route G-1 (Grafenwoehr to Rose Barracks Direct Run) will not operate. We appreciate the community’s understanding as we seek to ensure the safety of all during inclement weather conditions. POC for this action is Mr. Gerardo Martinez, TMP Branch Chief, DSN 475-6347, CIV 09641-83-6347 or gerardo.martinezrivera.civ@us.army.mil.

Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221. What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly. How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation. Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks. If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find. Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at 09662 832812 and let them know what happened. Passion Play Through 29 March: in 95478 Kemnath, at the Mehrzweckhalle (community hall), Badstraße 12 (adjacent to the school, ca. 20 km / 12.5 miles north of Grafenwöhr). Parking is available around the building. After a 200-year hiatus, the Passion play in Kemnath was reinstated in 1983. Since then, the play is put on every 5 years. It follows the script from 1731, probably written by a monk of the former Franciscan monastery in Kemnath. In the past, the play was the highlight of the Holy Week. It was stopped by decree as the Volksfest-like atmosphere around the play didn't please the authorities. It is thanks to around 140 actors, nearly 100 singer, 14 musicians and 10 assistants working behind the scenes that this play can go ahead every 5 years. Click here for some photos from previous plays. Tickets can be purchased online (only German but the dates and start times are easy to understand).
