It’s been hot outside and summer is still going strong. When you beat the heat by going to the pool, river or lake, make sure you and your family are staying safe while cooling off. Only swim in authorized swimming areas. Use the buddy system, but don’t push yourself. Swim only within your ability and comfort level. Don’t drink and swim and be cautious of hidden objects in murky water. These tips apply to a beach vacation, too. But, when you’re at the ocean, please be aware of riptides, undertows, sea creatures, surfers (kite & wind) and changing beach conditions.

All on-post flyers must have garrison commander approval Anyone wishing to place any flyers or advertisements around on-post in the BMC MUST have garrison commander approval prior to distribution. This rule pertains to both members of the military community and outside organizations. In fact, AER 210-70 prohibits personnel with post access to "distribute, display, or leave advertising materials on installations without written authorization beforehand from the garrison commander or ICAO. Advertising materials include flyers, posters, billboards, car-top advertising boards, product literature, and all similar items." Violators will be subject to punitive action.

Read more to learn which MILES loans are eligible for automatic refunds.

Hazardous weather tips Hazardous weather can occur all year and is extremely unpredictable. Most severe weather fronts provide little time for advanced warning. Don’t assume that weather is predictable. Most serious weather conditions occur without warning. If it looks like weather will become hazardous, take inside anything that can be moved by high winds. If at home, don’t leave.
If driving, be prepared for blowing debris, falling limbs and trees and be aware that you may need to stop suddenly. Drive slowly. Listen to local radio stations for road closures. Bring pets inside. Stay away from windows and doors while inside.
USPS Express Mail now Priority Express Mail The USPS has changed the name of the Express Mail service. The new name will be Priority Express Mail. Current boxes can continue to be used until exhausted. All other services will continue as normal.
Do you want to be a JAG (and have the Army pay for school?) The Army is looking for dedicated and talented junior officers who could become JAGs. The Office of The Judge Advocate General is now accepting applications for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program (FLEP). Under the FLEP program, the Army projects sending up to 25 active duty commissioned officers to law school at government expense. Interested officers should immediately sign up for the LSATs as the scores are needed for the selection board. Selected officers will attend law school beginning the fall of 2014 and will remain on active duty while attending law school. Interested officers should review Chapter 14, AR 27-1, to determine their eligibility. Officers serving in Bavaria interested in applying should contact their unit’s legal advisor (see contact info here.) or the 7A JMTC Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Major Ed Linneweber, at DSN 475-8061, edward.c.linneweber.mil@mail.mil. The OSJA will hold informational briefings about the Funded Legal Education Program from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on 13 Aug and from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on 27 Aug. The briefings will be in the 7A OSJA Conference Room, Bldg. 106 in Tower Barracks.

But, assigning a sponsor is only the first step – the quality of the sponsorship program rest solely on the shoulders of sponsors. Remember that it is extremely important to stay in touch with new community members before, during, and after arrival. Sponsors should answer questions, and if they need help, they can ask ACS, the unit sponsorship coordinator or contact the Garrison Sponsorship Liaison. Training is available for Soldiers, spouses and DA civilians at Rose Barracks, Bldg. 322. For more on training dates/availability at please call, DSN 476-2650 or CIV 09662-83-2650.

Vilseck Elementary School Vilseck Elementary School administrators and faculty wish all of our students and their parents a safe and enjoyable summer. Students, don’t forget to keep reading and do some math, and by all means enjoy being outside and playing in and around Germany. Child Find: What is child-find screening? Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-83-3221. What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly. How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation. Why is it important? When learning challenges are identified at a young age, early intervention can help the child with learning tasks. If parents are interested, what do they need to do? They can go to the school’s website and find the link for Child Find. Under that link is a questionnaire they need to fill out and email back to the email address provided on the form. Someone will be in contact with them within 48 hours. If they do not hear back please contact the school at 09662 832812 and let them know what happened. (Just in case the email was rejected as SPAM) Continuous School Progress Goals: Goal 1: By 2016 all students will improve competency with numbers and operations as measured by increased performance on assessments. Goal 2: By 2016 all students will demonstrate improved reading comprehension through written and oral communication as measured by increased performance on assessments.
