Already weeks before young villagers gather piles of wood on some of the mountains that surround Oberammergau. On the evening of August 24 the Oberammergau musicians walk (or better: climb) to the rocks of the Kofel mountain to play some of the King’s favorite tunes. When the music finishes and night falls over Oberammergau, the bonfires are lit: a huge crown on top of the Kofel, an "L II" and a cross on other mountains around. Afterwards the musicians and the "fire-makers" return to the village in a procession and meet in a traditional pub to celebrate together.

Heads up: Sat, September 27, 11 a.m., Garmisch Schießstätte am Hausberg, Open Invitation to the German-American Air rifle Friendship Shoot No experience needed. Shooting from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Buffet opens at 11:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult and at least 10 years of age. Cost for shoot and BBQ buffet: € 12,00. This year will be the first time for the shoot to take place in a new location. Since we are losing the Keans Lodge as an event area, we are very lucky to have found new partners for this traditional German– American event. The local Garmischer Schützen (shooters) have offered to host the shoot for us. Many of their members used to come to our event and they felt it would be a shame to not continue the tradition. It will be slightly different than it used to be but nevertheless a great opportunity to meet new people and to spend a fun day with our German friends. Please rsvp by 20 September to: andrea.u.winter.ln@mail.mil Cake and dessert donations welcome, please let us know at the time of registration.

Berchtesgaden Salt Mines The visitor discovers a modern underground experience on the Salt Time Journey, combined with the venerable tradition of salt mining since 1517. The visitor’s train, the Salt Cathedral and the Mirror Lake are the hearts of the multimedia installation on a subterranean surface of approximately 6000m². The Salt Laboratory and the Treasure Vault make you familiar with the nature of salt, its history and its abundance of functions, which are essential to people and life. After dressing in specially made overalls, a little train leads the visitor into the depths of the mountain. In the “Kaiser‐Franz” sink works, the secretive stage setting of light, color and salt creates a Salt Cathedral, in which the universe is reflected. The 40 meter long miner’s slide takes the visitor down to the next level. It continues in the tunnel, past a salt grotto in mystic lighting, past memorials of earlier salt mining. In the Treasure Vault and the Salt Laboratory, questions about the whole salt range are answered playfully and in an abundance of languages. The 150 meter deep Mirror Lake leads back to the reflective area: the ferry crosses the water in a fascinating composition of sound and light – with the music of the world‐ famous composer Peter Wolf ‐ taking the visitors to the other bank of the brine, under the canopy of salt crystals, which are growing and reflected in the lake. Mighty salt veins reveal the potential of the rocks, before the path leads back up to daylight. The guided tour lasts one hour and will be translated in many different languages. Besides this wealth of experiences, additional innovations and benefits also await the guest: the glassy visitor’s centre, imbedded in the landscape, gets visitors in the right mood for the adventurous journey into salt; the light‐flooded salt shop with a wide range of salt products and a traditional restaurant round off the visit. The Berchtesgadener Land spells majestic alpine peaks, idyllic lakes and woods, worldclass cultural attractions and world‐famous sightsee‐ ing attractions. Berchtesgaden is located a stone’s throw from Mozart’s birthplace, Salzburg in Austria, and is also known for its hospitality and Bavarian “Gemuetlichkeit”.
