USAG Bavaria to open 24/7 fitness center at Tower Barracks
GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria opens its first 24/7 fitness center open to all DOD ID cardholders 18 years or older. The Field House Gym — scheduled to open in the following weeks — is located in Grafenwoehr at the Tower Barracks Field House, Bldg. 547, behind the AAFES Military Clothing shop across from Burger King. The new facility is the result of an initiative begun by former garrison command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj Robert Todd, well over a year ago, said Serge Kearse, Chief of Sports and Fitness Operation Branch for USAG Bavaria.
some cardio equipment such as treadmills and Ellipticals. Fitness center patrons, after completion of the orientation class, will be able to access the facility by swiping their ID card through an installed ID card access system. Cameras are installed to ensure safety and accountability. “Due to all the interest in functional fitness, we designed an entire room so everybody can come in and do their functional fitness. We have a lot more room and good equipment,” said Anna Olson, a family member, Army spouse and volunteer. But maintaining the facility will require community assistance.

In order to use the 24-hour facility and functional fitness areas, ID cardholders must attend a mandatory orientation class. Participants will be required to fill out a Release of Liability form upon completion, authorizing them 24/7 ID card access. “The safety orientation and training covers also physical activities that you will have to do,” Kearse said. “We want to make sure that everybody who uses this facility has the basic knowledge without injuring themselves. We also cover emergency aspects, such as where the emergency phones and First Aid are located. Orientation dates and times will follow and information will be made available at the Tower Barracks Fitness Center. For more, or to register, call DSN 475-9007, CIV 09641-83-9007.
The Field House Gym at Tower Barracks will serve as a pilot for the other installations at USAG Bavaria, where the demand for a 24/7 fitness center extends across the footprint. “Processes are in place to bring a 24/7 gym to both Rose Barracks and Hohenfels,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Todd. “Prep work is underway and a bulk purchase of gym equipment has been made. We expect to receive the equipment by July 2018.” Those seeking top volunteer at the new fitness center, or for more information on orientation dates, visit or contact the Tower Barracks Fitness Center at DSN 475-9007, CIV 09641-83-9007.

USO Europe names US Soldier in Bavaria Volunteer of the Quarter GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — When Spc. Kasheem Stephens is asked why he volunteers at the USO, he is quick to smile and point out the obvious: “It’s fun, a good place to relax and meet new people.” Stephens, who currently serves with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment Regimental Support Squadron at USAG Bavaria, has been such a consistent volunteer at both of USO Bavaria’s two sites in Grafenwoehr and Camp Aachen, that he was recognized as the Volunteer of the Quarter for 2017 throughout the European theater. Stephens was blown away by the award. “I thought I was in trouble,” Stephens said. “I was really surprised.”
He has been in Germany a little over one year, working and training as a military medic. Currently, he is enrolled at Central Texas College and is considering pursuing an advanced nursing degree. Stephens – originally from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – joined the Army in September 2012. He became involved at USO Bavaria after his non-commissioned officer invited him to do some volunteering. Stephens really enjoys interacting with other volunteers and has been incredible asset, said Carly Harris, USO Bavaria region manager. “Volunteers are our lifeblood, and we really appreciate everything they do,” she said.

How to PCS to Germany with Pets
GRAFENWOEHR Germany — So, you are getting ready to PCS to Germany, and you’re scared, excited, nervous or all of the above. You’ve already gathered your family’s information, but what about your pets? This can add more stress to an already stressful situation. As a military wife and beloved pet owner, I have compiled a list of several resources that will make traveling with your pet a little less stressful. First, let’s talk about paperwork. If you don’t remember anything else during your travels, be sure to remember to save and keep every bit of militaryrelated paperwork with you. One of the first things you should know as a pet owner about PCSing to Germany is the country’s breed restrictions. Germany has specific laws that prohibit some dogs from the region. Dog Breeds Restricted in Bavaria The state of Bavaria enacted a law in 2002 classifying dog breeds into two categories and restricting specific breeds deemed dangerous. Class 1 dogs — both pure and cross breeds — are not allowed in Bavaria. These dogs have been shown to react aggressively with little provocation and have been traditionally used as fighting dogs, based on studies evaluated by the Bavarian government. Owners must provide proof of pedigree.

The following breeds, and mixes with these breeds, are not authorized in Bavaria: • American Staffordshire Terrier • Pit-Bull • Staffordshire Bull Terrier • Any dog mixed with any breed listed above • Bullterrier In Bavaria, class 2 breeds, as well as their crossbreeds, are also presumed to be dangerous and aggressive. Owners must provide proof the animal does not possess tendency for heightened aggression. Typically, these dogs are required to pass a temperament test with a licensed provider and then registered with the host nation safety and public order office. Tests can cost up to several hundred euro, and dogs must be at least nine months old to be eligible, according to USAG Ansbach. Dogs that fail the mandatory test are treated with the same legal provisions as class 1 breeds and are illegal in Bavaria. • • •

Bull Terrier Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff/Italian Corso Dog) Dogo Argentino Dogue de Bordeux Fila Brasileiro Mastiff Mastino Napoletano Mastin Espanol Dogo Canario (Perro de Presa Canario) Rottweiler Perro de Presa Mallorquin (Ca de Bou)
NOTE: Owners of temperament-approved class 2 dogs are required by German mandate to keep the pet muzzled and on a leash in public areas. Additionally, the dog walker must be least 18 years old and physically capable of controlling the dog. Only one class 2 pet can be walked at a time. Be sure to have all required paperwork completed when entering the country. Providing pedigree and being prepared is the owner’s responsibility. For more information regarding breed restrictions and requirements for dangerous breeds while in Germany, visit Dangerous Dogs Law for the State of Bavaria and Military Installations pet shipping guidelines. Now that we’ve covered breed restrictions, here is a list of the things you’ll need to travel with a pet. Identification with microchip. All pets must have an ISO compliant 15-digit microchip to enter Germany from the U.S., said Shayla Hogue, Veterinarian, Vilseck Veterinarian Clinic. It is recommended to keep record or proof of when that microchip was implanted.
If your pet does not have an ISO compliant microchip, you will need to: •
•
•
Travel with a microchip reader that can read your pet’s microchip or contact the veterinary officials at the intended port of arrival to verify that they have a reader capable of reading your pet’s microchip. OR Have your pet chipped with an ISO-compatible microchip. The number and implant dates of both microchips must be documented on the pet’s health certificate. Rabies Vaccination Certificate (DD Form 2208). A rabies vaccination must occur after microchip implantation and be current upon entering Germany. The rabies vaccination may be administered the same day as the microchip implantation, but any rabies vaccination administered before a microchip is implanted is invalid. Continued on page 10

• NOTE: If your pet had a non-ISO compatible chip implanted at the same time as or before your pet’s most recent vaccination, your pet will not have to be re-vaccinated even if it had to be re-microchipped with an ISO compliant chip to travel to the EU. Pets less than 12 weeks old without rabies vaccinations, as well as pets 12-16 weeks old vaccinated less than 21 days prior to departure, are not allowed to enter Germany. Health Certificate (DD Form 2209). The health certificate must be signed by an accredited veterinarian after examining your pet and determining that it is free of infectious diseases and satisfies all German import requirements. Afterward, have your completed paperwork endorsed by your local APHIS Veterinary Services office. Your local APHIS Veterinary Services office will be able to provide specific information about the process and fees associated with endorsement of the EU Health Certificate. Other. Your pet’s safety for travel is your responsibility. It is ultimately your responsibility as the owner to ensure all requirements are met. Additional documents, such as immunization lists, border clearances, kennel labels, proof of ownership and bi-lingual certificates may also be required, depending on the family’s circumstances. For a full list of importing requirements, visit APHIS Pet Requirements for Germany.
Traveling on Patriot Express Air Mobility Command authorizes families traveling on PCS moves to transport pets on DoD-sponsored airlines, such as Patriot Express, according to AMC’s pet brochure guide. Pet space is very limited on Patriot Express flights and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To book your pet’s space, contact your local transportation office, or TO, as early as possible. In general, families are usually limited to two pets. Owners with more than two pets must notify the TO at least 15 days prior to the flight to reserve any possible additional space. Owners must also accompany pets on any AMC flights and pay the transport fees.

Single-pet travel rates (includes weight of pet and container): • Up to 70 pounds: $125 • 71 – 140 pounds: $250 • 141 – 150 pounds: $375 Pet owners must also pay a €55 fee to the German Government upon claiming your pet and processing through customs. For more, take a look at the AMC Pet Travel brochure. Traveling on Commercial Flights If pet slots are not available on Patriot Express, your pet may need to travel commercially. Several airline companies will ship pets for military families, including United, American, Delta, Alaska and Hawaii Cargo.
Typically, prices can range from $400 – 2,000, depending on the airline, pet size and weight, and location. Be sure to check with specific airlines for their rates and requirements. Standard Pet Container Kennel Requirements The International Air Transport Association, or IATA, lays out some basic requirements for travel pet carriers, but every airline maintains different standards. In general, a flight-ready pet carrier must: • •
• •
• • • •
Be sturdy and properly ventilated (four sides of ventilation for international flights) Be constructed to rigid plastic, wood or metal. Roof must be solid with no doors or ventilation openings. Kennels made exclusively from wire will not be accepted. Be large enough for the pet to freely sit, stand and lie down in a normal posture Provide a three-inch clearance above the tallest point on the pet’s body (head or ears when standing in a natural position). Be secured with a metal nut and bolt in each hole to connect the top and the bottom. Have two empty bowls accessible from outside the kennel must be attached. Contain absorbent material. Contain no toys or other objects.
It is very important to keep in mind ever airline is different, it is recommended to check with the airline or AMC officials for exact requirements. Also, the American Veterinary Medical Association does not recommend sedating or medicating your animal prior to the flight. Your pet is finally here When you land, head to the cargo location to pick up your pet. In most circumstances, your pet will be quarantined until a veterinarian can perform a quick examination and release them. You may also have to pay around €200 in international import fees. You will need a valid government-issued photo ID to pick up your pet. Once your pet arrives in country, you will have 14 days to register them with your on-post Vet Clinic. If you are issued government-leased or on-post housing, you will also have to show proof of registration at the on-post Vet Clinic and notify the Housing Office of any pets. USAG Bavaria environmental program best in Europe
To win the award, the USAG Bavaria Environmental Division ranked first among other overseas Army installations in the 2017 Secretary of the Army Environmental Awards program. Once the Army award was secured, the division went on to compete against, and beat, the winners from its sister services. The Installation Management Command – Europe Director, Michael D. Formica, presented the award to representatives from three on-post organizations that sync efforts and execute the environmental management program at USAG Bavaria – the Directorate of Public Works’ Environmental Division, U.S Army Europe’s Integrated Training Area Management, and the Logistic Readiness Center. In addition to the on-post partnerships, the environmental program works closely with Germany’s Federal Forest Office and other host nation authorities. This close working relationship was highlighted by German forest officials during a recent visit, Formica said. “The [forest meister] and his deputy educated me on the great teamwork that exists between our Environmental Division and [their office] and how that teamwork has enabled this training 11 | Bavarian Times
area to be referred to at the Serengeti of Europe. This area is better preserved than any other place in Central Europe.” In the last few years, the garrison’s training areas have seen the re-emergence of highly-threatened species that have been absent since the 19th century, said Manfred Rieck, chief, Environmental Division. “The white-tailed eagle, European lynx, fish otter, wild cat and greater horseshoe bat are just a few of the species that are now thriving,” said Rieck. “Currently, we are excited about European wolf sightings in the Grafenwoehr Training Area. It was first spotted in September 2016 by a wildlife camera and has been breaking news in German media.” The garrison’s environmental program is multifaceted and oversees a range of environmental aspects such as managing hazardous substances, remediating contaminated sites, improving energy efficiency, recycling, conserving wildlife and habitats, monitoring water quality and protecting the area’s cultural resources. Supporting the military readiness mission and its ever evolving needs is the environmental program’s top priority, while environmental stewardship is its essence. “I have always known we have the best environmental program in USAREUR,” said Col. Lance Varney, garrison commander, USAG Bavaria. “This award was hard-won and is greatly deserved by the folks at the Environmental Division. I take tremendous pride in their efforts and sound environmental stewardship.” | by USAG Bavaria Public Affairs

How new recycling program at Neustadt affects you
GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Neustadt an der Waldnaab, the county which oversees Grafenwoehr, Netzaberg and Eschenbach, rolls out a biodegradable recycling program this October requiring residents to separate and recycle plant-based kitchen waste.
To ensure high quality and no contamination, waste management teams will use automatic electronic detection systems before dumping the contents of each bio bin into the compost mix, Bueller said. Bins contaminated with metal and plastic will not be collected.
The new program is the next in a series of other county-specific biodegradable recycling policies designed to comply with Germany-wide environmental mandates.
View your community’s updated trash separation table and pick-up schedule below, or head to the Self-Help Store for a hard copy.
Who does this affect? The cities of Altenstadt, Eschenbach, Etzenricht, Grafenwoehr, Kirchentumbach, Mantel, Netzaberg, Neustadt, Neustadt am Kulm, Oberwildenau, Parkstein, Pressath, Schwarzenbach, Speinshart, Steinfels, Trabitz and Vorbach are affected. Residents are now required to separate biodegradable waste, or “bio waste,” from ordinary refuse and discard it in a new brown “biotonne” bin, according to the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria waste management program. Servicemembers, DOD civilians and families are also required to participate in accordance with the DOD’s Environmental Final Governing Standards for Germany, a document aligning U.S. military standards with German federal regulations. When does it start? The program officially begins Monday, Oct. 1. All Neustadt residents will receive their new individual brown 120-liter “biotonne” containers from the county’s waste management office before October, said USAG Bavaria Tower Barracks SORT Coordinator Helmut Bueller. What, exactly, goes inside? The new brown bins have address labels and stickers that describe the program and list examples of permissible bio waste items. Families should refer to the label on their bin and review their community’s updated trash separation chart for more specific instruction.

In general, bio waste consists of compostable or plant-based kitchen waste, such as leftover vegetables, fruit peels, coffee grinds, egg shells, grass clippings and dead flowers. Bio waste does not include meat or dairy products. How does it work? Neustadt will provide bio waste pick-up will on a biweekly basis, according to new pick-up schedules. Families should roll their bio waste bin to the curb or designated pick-up location the evening before scheduled pick-up. First pick-up dates are as early as mid-October. Collections of the county’s biodegradable waste will eventually be used to produce heat and energy for the region, Bueller said. The new program is also an opportunity to help your community improve waste management and foster a healthier environment.

In some instances, if left untreated, these struggles may escalate to more serious problems, including divorce, domestic violence and even suicide. The Army acknowledges the extraordinary strength required of families and Soldiers and considers preservation of the family among its top priorities. USAG Bavaria’s Army Community Service, or ACS, is perhaps your most effective response to the increasing stress placed on families. It is an organization solely dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for the community, and it is one of the best resources for those seeking support through challenges — military or otherwise — and community integration. Maintaining personal and familial resiliency through the extraordinary challenges faced by military families and service members requires all parties to be committed and proactive. Pressure from consecutive deployments, isolation, financial hardships and emotional instability, for instance, can all have negative effects on relationships and deteriorate family units.
The organization also has a New Parent Support Program (NSPS) aimed at helping families with children three years or younger adjust to the everyday demands of parenthood. Their schedule and offerings always change, so be sure to visit the ACS Calendar regularly.

Domestic violence: Take pre-emptive measures
Fire Prevention Week: Every second counts, plan two ways out
GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Have you ever thought about what to do in the event of a fire? Flames can engulf rooms, block entryways and bring homes to disrepair in a matter of minutes. Do you know at least two ways out? Fire departments across the U.S. join their efforts every year to host National Fire Prevention Week. This year, the campaign runs Oct. 8 – 14, 2017.

The U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Fire Departments on Tower and Rose Barracks teamed up to host several events on our installations. From open houses and various fire and rescue training to school visits and static displays, fire department staff hope to help drive awareness about fire prevention and generate community readiness for any and all fire-related incidents — especially those that occur at home, said USAG Bavaria Fire Chief Josef Rodler.
These are all important considerations. And there’s never been a better time than now to step up your fire prevention plan. Attend this week’s Fire Department Open Houses, attend training on how to use a fire extinguisher, request an in-office rundown of fire safety or come out to the equipment displays to meet one-onone with fire safety staff. How to prevent home fires Practicing basic prevention measures will greatly reduce the risk of fires at home. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security provides a few tips: •
• •
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, fires can fill an entire home in just a few minutes and reach temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. But it’s not the flaming heat that poses the greatest threat to safety. It’s the black smoke and poisonous gases that lead the nation’s causes of fire-related deaths. Before we dive into daily fire prevention tips and what to do in the event a fire breaks out in your office or home, it’s important to have a game plan: where are your fire exists and what is the best fire escape route? Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher? Does your smoke detector work?

Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. Position grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Take the mystery out of fire play by teaching children that fire is a tool, not a toy. Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach and sight, preferably in a locked cabinet. Never leave children unattended near operating stoves or burning candles, even for a short time. Consider creating a “kid-free zone” of three feet around the stove or cooking areas. Smoke outside, and completely stub out butts in an ashtray or a can filled with sand. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash can. Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately and do not run cords Bavarian Times | 14

To escape the flames and heat, crawl low — staying under any smoke — to your exit. Heavy smoke and poisonous gases collect first along the ceiling. Before opening a door, feel the doorknob and door. If either is hot, or if there is smoke coming around the door, leave the door closed and use your second way out. If you open a door, open it slowly. Be ready to shut it quickly if heavy smoke or fire is present. If you can’t get to someone needing assistance, leave the vicinity and call the fire department. Tell the emergency operator where the person is located. If pets are trapped inside your home, tell firefighters right away. If you can’t get out, close the door and cover vents and cracks around doors with cloth or tape to keep smoke out. Call the fire department. Say where you are and signal for help at the window with a light-colored cloth or a flashlight. If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll. Stop immediately, drop to the ground and cover your face with your hands. Roll over and over or back and forth until the fire is out. If you or someone else cannot stop, drop and roll, smother the flames with a blanket or towel. Use cool water to treat the burn immediately for three to five minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth. Get medical help right away by calling the fire department or an ambulance.

When fighting crime, MPs partner with German police to keep Bavaria safe
GRAFENWOEHR, Germany -- In almost no other institution in or outside the military is a partnership as engaged, interdependent and successful as the one between garrison military police here and German police departments of the surrounding area. U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria's military police regularly team up with host nation police departments known as Polizei, as well as many other law enforcement organizations ensuring maximum safety, efficiency and friendship. "Partnership and communication is key," said USAG Bavaria's top cop and director of the Directorate of Emergency Services, Lt. Col Mike "Heavy" Burden. Burden has aimed to establish and enhance partnerships since only arriving during the summer of 2017. He recently hosted his first quarterly Police Chiefs Association Meeting to build off existing relationships and forge new commitments with key law enforcement leaders. Discussion topics at these meetings illustrate the symbiotic relations necessary to fight crime and keep citizens safe -- both on- and off-post. At the next scheduled meeting, for example, both German and American law enforcement leaders will discuss policing statistics, German police patrol schedules of U.S. bus routes, abandoned pets, joint patrol efforts and German police investigations. The goal at these meetings is to emphasize establishing direct lines of communication, Burden said.

"By incorporating more law enforcement leaders from all of the jurisdictions surrounding the USAG Bavaria community, DES can better support community readiness through enhanced emergency response, coordinated and rehearsed training events, and positive partnerships through regular engagements with local Polizei leaders," Burden said. But the partnership extends far beyond the discussion table. Horse-mounted Polizei from Munich have been assisting MPs at the garrison's German-American Volksfest. German law enforcement and first responders participate annually in the garrison's force protection exercise. And leadership representing U.S. Army and German law enforcement convene annually for the garrison's Emergency Management Summit to share best practices and build a common operating picture.
German law enforcement and first responders participate annually in USAG Bavaria's force protection exercise. In almost no other institution in or outside the military is a partnership as engaged, interdependent and successful as the one between garrison military police here and German police departments of the surrounding area.
Processes and police structures are also in place to ensure continued and sustainable relations. For a smooth operating law enforcement partnership, for example, a German Polizei liaison officer has an office physically located at USAG Bavaria's MP station. The German liaison -- who speaks both German and English -- works closely with the U.S. liaison officer, and both pull data from the same systems and files. The German Polizei liaison offers service within the USAG Bavaria footprint. The liaison, for example, assists U.S. military personnel and their families receiving letters or forms from the German Polizei. This is not a one way road. U.S. Army MPs often support the German Polizei. Compared to the U.S., where MP responsibilities end outside installation gates, USAG Bavaria MPs can take over off-post police activities in some specially-defined cases, such as in off-post housing areas or in cases involving only people protected by the Status of Forces Agreement. And no two agencies could work effectively together without regular training. Combined training, like K9 training, supports shared goals in safety and readiness. U.S. Army military police within the garrison train regularly with German Polizei counterparts. But it doesn't end there. Recently, MPs at Hohenfels worked alongside and assisted an element of Dutch Military Police in support of Exercise Swift Response 2017. And just this past summer, the USAG Bavaria MP force augmented emergency services and law enforcement measures at the new Novo Selo Training Area in Bulgaria. "Community safety is absolutely our number one priority. It's what we think about every single day. It's job number one," said Col. Lance Varney, USAG Bavaria commander. "We are very closely integrated with our host nation based on the strength and our partnership with the German authorities, their emergency management systems. We integrate very well to bring that safety within all our communities."

A Soldier within the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria footprint recently received messages on a private Facebook page deemed by investigators as malicious and aggressive. "Potential foreign adversaries are using social media to make threats toward service members," said Adam Troxel, lead special agent with the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade. It remains unclear how many service members have been targeted, but even one is one too many. "We take any cases of malicious and aggressive social media activity very seriously," Troxel said. "For one, we will ensure the security of our service members and their families. And secondly, we aim to maintain readiness within the ranks. A commander cannot afford to lose a Soldier who must travel home in response to an online threat to his family." If you or someone you know is in receipt of threatening or malicious social media messaging, you can submit an online report at iSalute (www.inscom.army.mil/isalute). If you live within the USAG Bavaria community, contact the USAG Bavaria counterintelligence office (www.bavaria.army.mil/ci) at the Grafenwoehr Field Office at DSN 569-1928, CIV 09641-70-569-1928. Or, contact CID at DSN 475-7339/7340, CIV 09641-83-7339/7340. As social media continues to evolve, so too has the number of online predators. While only a few years ago cybersecurity implied protecting personal information online, today cybersecurity translates into a more proactive role. "It's important to realize that social media is a global domain where our personal lives can be exposed to potential threats," Troxel said.

Vilseck Army Health Clinic conducts first in-home Telehealth visit Renata Lukezic, General Pediatrician at the Vilseck Army Health Clinic, conducted her first Telehealth to the Home appointment in September which launched the Medical Department Activity Bavaria Telehealth to the Home pilot program. Lukezic is the first MEDDAC-B provider to conduct a follow-up appointment utilizing virtual technology to connect to the family in their home. The patient's parent, Shaneka Mangler, said, "not having to drive all of the way to Vilseck took a lot of the stress out of going to the clinic. I loved it! I wish all of my appointments could be this way." Dr. Lukezic added, "I thoroughly enjoyed the home telemedicine visit. The atmosphere was completely relaxed and I could tell the mother was relaxed as well. She was in her warm home, did not have to travel to the clinic, nor worry about parking. The mother and I took our time as a team. I had time to answer all of her questions and had the advantage of being able to order their prescription at a clinic closer to their home, which significantly reduced their driving time. I envision home telemedicine as the perfect tool for promoting health, wellness and quality of life." As the MEDDAC-B Telehealth to the Home pilot program progresses, more appointments may be offered to patients as an alternative to coming in to a clinic For more information on the Regional Health Command Europe Telehealth Program, please visit: https://rhce.amedd.army.mil/landstuhl/ services.cfm?MTFinfo_id=896. | by Ruth Carlon, Medical Director, MEDDAC-Bavaria Telehealth

Formica is responsible for the infrastructure and management of all U.S. military installations in Europe. He is a senior executive service civilian whose rank equals that of a two-star general. U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria belongs to IMCOM-E. Mayor Edgar Knobloch welcomed Formica and his wife Kim, garrison commander Col. Lance C. Varney and his wife Amy and the new garrison command sergeant major Micheal D. Sutterfield and his wife Kelly in the conference room of the town hall. Knobloch pointed out that the town hall was built in 1462, 30 years prior to the discovery of America. However, the city does not only have a lot of history to offer - it also features a lot of new and modern leisure and infrastructure facilities. Knobloch presented them in a slide show, including the outdoor pool, Stadthalle (City auditorium) and the newly renovated school. Cultural manager Birgit Plößner invited the American guests to a walk around town, showing them the historic market square with the plague column, Holy Mary Assumption Church and
the Annaberg mountain were the tour stops. The Americans were excited about the newly renovated Schönberg stage, suggesting that it would be the perfect place for a concert of the U.S. Army Europe Band. Then, Knobloch presented a global player in the Huetten subdivision: Rainer Zechmayer provided an overview of his tools, mold design and construction company. With his products, well-known international car manufacturers produce high-quality vehicle interior parts. Birgit Plößner presented the cultural section of the museum, focusing on the exhibition featuring the most famous soldier ever training in Grafenwoehr: Elvis Presley. The ladies immediately started playing the songs of the King of Rock and Roll in the jukebox. Josef Neubauer guided the visitors through the military section of the museum, explaining the historic development of the training area. The day ended with dinner and interesting conversation in the museum’s Zoigl beer pub. food and beverages were provided by Willi Gottschalk from the Historic Society. Formica thanked Mayor Knobloch and the other hosts for the interesting briefings and ensured them that the good cooperation and Bavarian-American partnership will be continued.

tower barracks Painter Rudi Breit (center) restored the historic Krupp cannon. CSM Robert G. Todd (from right), Stephanie Kramer, Anton Gnauck and Lt. Col. Florian Rommel were happy about the successful refurbishment.
Old cannon, new splendor The project was supported and approved by Stephanie Kramer, chief, maintenance division and foreman Anton Gnauck. The restoration was initiated Command Sgt. Major Robert G. Todd, the former USAG Bavaria command sergeant major. One of his projects was the static display of historic military vehicles on the parade field across from the eater tower. The historic cannon will also be put on display there to commemorate the training area’s official hour of birth.
On June 30, 1910, the first shot on the training area was fired with a howitzer made by Krupp armory. A similar weapon has now been restored by the U.S. Army and for Breit it was a special and extraordinary task.
However, to protect the more than 110 year-old cannon from the weather, a pavilion still has to be build. Todd gave that task to his successor, Command Sgt. Major Micheal Sutterfield, who took office on Sept. 27. Once the pavilion is finished, the Krupp cannon which was formerly displayed at the Grafenwoehr military museum will officially be given to the garrison as a loan by the city, the museum and the German Army.
He restored the Krupp cannon which was made in 1905 where normally trucks and other garrison equipment are painted. He invested almost 40 work hours in the refurbishment of the demilitarized cannon. It included completely removing the old paint and sanding the metal parts until they were shiny again. The still functioning optics and sighting mechanism were restored with great attention to detail and movable parts and hand wheels were loosened again. Then, the entire cannon was painted again.

Elvis in front of his barracks at Camp Algier. Elvis was in Grafenwoehr for training in 1958 and 1960.
“Elvis GI” - Legend has it that the King himself etched it into this brick of Bleidorn Tower on the observation point in the training area.
“Elvis GI” the famous singer and U.S. soldier is kept alive in the museum
But what does the abbreviation “GI” mean which is commonly used as a synonym for “American soldier” and was established between 1915 and 1920. It is assumed that its origin goes back to the metal garbage cans that were used by the U.S. Army in those days and who were imprinted with GI, “Galvanized Iron".” Later, it was assumed that it goes back to the imprint on all military items that stands for “Government Issue,” meaning issued or owned by the government. So the marking “GI” on the soldiers’ equipment became a synonym for the American soldiers themselves. “Elvis G.I. Blues” is also the name of a well-known album and movie by the famous singer. The song “Wooden Heart - Muss I denn zum Städtele hinaus” from that movie became a millionseller and until today signifies bidding farewell to a soldier. An entire section is dedicated to Elvis at the Grafenwoehr Culture and Military Museum and currently, a special exhibition entitled “Elvis as G.I. - the King in Grafenwoehr” commemorates the 40th anniversary of his death. Elvis, the G.I. is commemorated in a lot of literature, photos and contemporary documents. A special highlight is the original baby grand and piano bench from Micky Bar. There, Elvis sang a few songs for his hosts and their employees. It was his only concert ever outside of the United States. The exhibition is open until Nov. 16 but a visit to the museum is always worth your while. Why not go and take a selfie with Elvis at the legendary baby grand in the museum’s setting of the Micky Bar.

health Stefanie Mollnhauer treats patients who suffer from muscle cramps with massages and magnesium.
No chance for sore and aching muscles
Endurance sports: Prevent muscle ache with mineral nutrients (djd). If you regularly engage in endurance sports, you can expect that acute muscle strain will lead to sore and aching muscles. Therefore, you should slowly build up the intensity of your work-out. Otherwise, exercise can result in painfully sore muscles, combined with micro injuries of the muscle fibers. Usually, pain occurs one or two days after exercising. “The danger of suffering from muscle pain is especially high when engaging in so-called eccentric, decelerating activities, for example when walking downhill,” says Stefanie Mollnhauer, sports physician from Lindau at Lake Constance. Fill up your mineral nutrient depots Beginners should start exercising on flat ground and slowly build up their amount of training. Before and after exercising, endurance athletes should ensure they are well-hydrated and sufficiently supplied with minerals and other nutrients. Measures enhancing blood flow such as massages or a warm bath following after training can help avoid muscle pain. More tips on how to avoid muscle soreness can be found at www.rgz24.de/ muskelkraempfe.
Sudorific sports such as running or biking lead to the loss of fluids and mineral nutrients through sweating. “To maintain fitness and to avoid muscle cramps, it is important to replenish mineral nutrient depots such as magnesium when relaxing and regenerating,” says Mollnhauer. A balanced diet with food rich in magnesium such as whole-grain products, nuts and mineral water with a high magnesium content sometimes just isn’t enough. To avoid a lack of magnesium, Mollnhauer recommends additionally taking 300 to 400 milligrams magnesium from the pharmacy per day. Exercise increases loss of magnesium A magnesium deficiency is the most frequent cause of muscle cramps when exercising explains former duathlon national team coach Mollnhauer. Sweating, an increased metabolism, increased secretion via the kidneys and increased muscle activity lead to the depletion of magnesium when exercising.

(djd). Patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) know that a stressful day and non-balanced, hectically eaten meals are bad for their digestive system. The results are abdominal pain and cramps, flatulence, diarrhea or constipation. IBS is one of the most often diagnosed illness of the digestive system. In Germany alone, more than five million people suffer from that illness which has only recently been recognized as a separate illness. Sleep disorders have a negative impact on the illness Many patients do not know that there is a correlation between sleep disorders and a worsening of the illness’ symptoms. A new study shows that IBS patients often suffer from sleep disorders which leads to a worsening of the symptoms, the patients’ well-being and more abdominal pain, all of which has a negative impact on their quality of life. A true vicious circle. The more important it is that IBS patients ensure they get a relaxing sleep. A first step to achieve that is to alleviate pain and cramps. Additionally, there is a lot you can do yourself to make sure you will get a relaxing sleep: A quiet, dark and not too cold room, removing all electronic devices from the bedroom, choosing the right mattress and abstaining from caffeine and alcohol in the evening. Every year it starts at the same time: A true coughing concert welcomes you in the office, when you get home the kids are sneezing - and your nose has already started to run as well. Colds are a recurring issue and the topic of this special. We will provide tips on how to strengthen your immune system, on getting your flu shot and how to avoid annoying cold sores. And finally, we will address the exciting question whether chicken soup really helps when you are suffering from a cold.
A small prick can prevent a flu. Modern four-part vaccines protect better than threepart vaccines.

How to protect yourself and others Make sure to get your flu shot on time with regard to the annual threat of a flu epidemic. It protects yourself and others. Every year, WHO releases a new recommendation regarding the composition of the flu vaccine. Modern four-part vaccines protect not only against three but all four important influenza virus strains. While a flu shot does not provide 100% protection, it is a great way of reducing the risk of getting a flu. First the cold, than the blisters Many people who suffer from herpes know it: First you catch a cold, then the annoying blisters on the lip show up. One reason for that is the fact that a cold reduces the strength of your immune system. If you want to prevent a cold and the annoying blisters, you should boost your immune system with a balanced diet, rich in basic food and vitamins with a lot of vegetables, herbs, fruit, potatoes and fresh juices. Additionally, taking certain micronutrients at the first signs of herpes can support the healing process of a herpes infection. Does chicken soup help when you are suffering from a cold? Chicken soup is known as a healthy and natural household 23 | Bavarian Times
remedy when suffering from the onset of a cold. Does chicken soup really help? Researchers of the University of Nebraska found out that believing in the healing effects of chicken soup is not a superstition. Its ingredients can indeed block the activity of certain white blood cells which promote developing a cold. A chicken-noodle soup, for example, is available from Erasco. It contains noodles, vegetables and juicy chicken meat. The ingredients are processed in a modern, gentle way.

Power for the immune system There are many ways to strengthen your immune system for the cold season. Your diet is most important. If you mix apples, pears, grapes and nuts with orange juice in a blender, the result is a breakfast smoothie rich in vitamins. A dash of sunflower oil ensures that the fat-soluble vitamins A and E are absorbed well by the body. So-called omni-molecular granulated from the health-food store contain the power of more than 100 different flowers, roots and fruits. Those blends such as “WurzelKraft” (root power) provide your body with the most important minerals and micronutrients. The granulate tastes well in muesli and yoghurt, as well as in soups or as topping on your salad. From a naturopathic standpoint, a balanced acid-base metabolism also plays an important role when trying to avoid a cold. Overacidified tissue, mainly caused by animal products, sugar or white flour, can block the nutrient supply of the cells. Basic food, i.e. food of pre-dominantly crop origin, can counter-balance that and improve the immune system.

Everything you need to know about winter tires in Germany
GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Warm weather is giving way to cold, which means you should prepare your vehicle now for winter. A German federal law that took effect in November of 2010 mandates the use of winter tires when conditions are icy. The law does not specify specific dates, according to ADAC, the German auto club that provides roadside assistance and air rescue. Many German drivers, however, abide by the general rule of “von O bis O” (from O to O), which means snow tires should be put on in October and remain on until Ostern (Easter).

You may be asking: What kind of winter tires does the German law require? First of all it is very important to look for certain signs placed on the tire. European winter tires have two kinds of markings: a snowflake for snow tires or M+S for tires designed to work in mud and snow, or “matsch und schnee” in German. All-season or all-weather tires may also have the M+S marking and are acceptable for winter driving, but tires designed specifically for snow function better than all-weather tires, according to a U.S. Army Europe winter driving fact sheet. The law also apply to motorbikes, trucks and buses, regardless of whether the driver is the owner or is renting the vehicle. To drive in Germany — no matter the road conditions — ensure you have a tire tread depth of at least 1.6 millimeters. The best is to have 4 millimeters, according to ADAC. A one euro coin can be
used for a quick “tread check.” When placed in the tire’s tread, you should not be able to see the golden edge of the coin. If you can, the tire needs to be replaced. | by Priscilla Rey U.S. law requires tires to have easy-to-see tread wear indicator bars running from one side of their tread design to the other when the tire’s tread has worn down to the minimum legal limit of 2/32 inch, according to the USAG Bavaria Safety Office. In some parts of Germany, particularly in the southern mountainous region, it is recommended to carry snow chains. Know how to put them on before you need them and make sure you don’t exceed 50 kph when driving with them on. Tires can be ordered, purchased and changed on-post at the Car Care Center on Vilseck. You can also change them yourself at the Auto Skills Center. If you’re unsure if other countries have similar tire laws, check the European Road Safety website. And for more on winter driving, check out the Army Europe Drivers Handbook and Examination Manual for Germany. Remember, if you don’t follow there requirements you can receive a ticket of €80 or higher. If you have questions, contact the USAG Bavaria Safety office at DSN 475-1470, CIV 09641-83-1470 Be smart and drive safe Bavaria! | by Priscilla Rey Bavarian Times | 24
German roadside assistance: Understanding ADAC
For the past several years, Thomas Ullrich, the ADAC adviser to the military, travels between the installations of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria to inform the American audience about the popular German roadside assistance service. “Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club” translates as German automobile club and is generally known as A.D.A.C. While most Americans pronounce it “Adac”, Germans most likely won’t recognize the pronunciation. Germans part the letters and say “A.D.A.C.”
speak English, they will transfer you to our English hotline,” said Ullrich. ADAC is comparable in performance to AAA in the U.S., Ullrich said. “But the difference is that AAA only insures the stated vehicle, whereas ADAC insures the person. Hence it doesn’t matter what vehicle is used or how many cars are owned. And normally American road side services only get you to the next mechanic, but ADAC gets you to your final destination. ADAC is cheaper too,” Ullrich said. Community members interested in joining ADAC can register online at www.adac.de.
ADAC provides roadside assistance whenever you’re in a jam. If, for example, you get a flat tire on the autobahn, you can call the ADAC hotline and they will provide assistance, Ullrich said.
But, according to Ullrich, because there are some problems with the English portion of the ADAC website, Americans are encouraged to sign-up through him at his booth on-post.
And benefits extend outside of Germany.
“People can get information and sign up at the ADAC booth,” he said, adding he wants the customers to get 100 percent satisfaction.
“With the plus membership…benefits are available in Europe, around the Black Sea, Mediterranean, Scandinavia and Russia,” Ullrich said. “Benefits regarding the person are worldwide. For example, if you get hurt outside Germany, [ADAC] will bring you back home.”
The cost of ADAC Plus membership varies depending on family size, but expect to pay €84-134 per person annually. You can evens set up automatic payments through your bank.
“My office hours are Monday till Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can find me in Grafenwoehr at the Auto Skill Center across from the gas station.” Ullrich travels between the USAG Bavaria installations — from the beginning of April until the end of October — to register those interested and inform community members of the benefits.
But what if you’re an ADAC member who speaks limited to no German. Can ADAC still help if you’re stranded on the road? No worries, Ullrich said.
“I have a booth in Vilseck at the library and in Hohenfels at the gas station. Office hours are the same as in Grafenwoehr. I switch between the locations weekly,” Ullrich said. “And we want to open another location in Garmisch but that is still in planning.”
“ADAC employees on the service hotline normally can speak English. If Americans call and the person in charge can’t

(djd). You can save a lot of money when buying a used instead of a new car. Sometimes, however, an attractive bargain can turn into a bad buy when defects were concealed or important aspects neglected in the contract. Dealer or private owner? When buying a used car from a dealer you should pay close attention to his behavior. “If he pushes you to make a quick decision, or if he can tell you little about the vehicle for sale, you should be careful,” says Christian Teppe, an attorney-at-law at Teppe Law Assoc. in Hamburg. Certain proofs of quality can provide safety and reliability. “Buying from a dealer has several advantages, to include getting up to two years of warranty, often additional warranty adjustments or affordable finance offers.”

From test driving to signing the sales contract When buying a used car, you should take a good look at it and take it for a test drive. It is best to have a witness or witnesses with you. If you decide to buy, read the sales contract carefully and close the deal in writing. Despite legal obligations, some dealers attempt to exclude warranty or liability in the contract. “Such clauses have no legal validity,” says Teppe. Additionally, make sure the contract is complete and includes sold accessories, supplementary equipment and known deficiencies for the purpose of subsequent proof. Also, make sure to get all necessary documents, most importantly part I and part II of the motor vehicle registration certificate.
Buying a used car from a private owner, might get a cheaper price. In turn, you pass up warranty and defects liability. Most private sellers add the clause “bought as seen” to the contract,” precluding warranty for obvious defects. “These include scratches and dents but do not include concealed defects and, therefore, do not exclude defects liability or contestation of the contract due to malicious deceit.” There is no legal difference between buying a used car online or from a dealer or private person. “You have the same legal rights,” says Teppe. Deer crossing: When it get dark, it gets dangerous The most important rules to avoid accidents You put yourself in danger if you do not react correctly in such situations.

(dtd). When winter comes, deer mating season starts. Every year, ten to 20 drivers are killed in accidents according to the German automobile club ADAC. To minimize the risk before or during an accident with deer, you should follow a few important rules. The animals primarily leave the forest, searching for food and potential partners, during the hours of dawn and dusk. The basic rule during those hours of the day is that drivers of cars and motorbikes should drive slowly and defensively along or in forests and fields and increase their attention to be able to react faster and better in the case of an emergency.
If you have an encounter with deer while driving, dim the lights, honk your horn and apply the brakes as fast as possible. To ensure you are able to automatically react in that manner when necessary, you should practice it when the road is empty and no other traffic is in sight. If you don’t do that you run the risk of blinding the deer with your light, causing it to freeze on the road or running towards the light, potentially causing a collision. If your breaking distance is not long enough, you should avoid risky evasive maneuvers - as bad as that might be for the animals. If a collision has occurred, remain calm, quickly secure the accident site and call the police. They will then inform the respective hunter who will take care of the injured or dead animals. Taking the animal with you is a total no-go because it is considered poaching. 27 | Bavarian Times

Novice drivers should get prepared early for the cold season. Fall with fog and wet leaves on the road already has a few surprises in store. To ensure safe driving on snowcovered roads, you must put the right tires on your car. Winter tires are now a must.
Four tips for novice drivers Safe and accident free through the winter months
1. Adjust your way of driving The driver is the most important factor when it comes to ensuring a safe arrival when roads are slippery. It is even more important to drive in an anticipatory way during fall and winter. That’s not only true when roads are icy and snow-covered but also when there are wet leaves on the road that make it slippery. Therefore, it is recommended to pay close attention to changing road conditions, accelerate more carefully, avoid abrupt breaking and slow down earlier. 2. Winter tires are a must-have There is no exception for novice drivers: The car’s tires should always be adapted to the weather. If the police stops you driving with summer tires on a snow-covered road, will be fined. However, the condition of your winter tires is also important because they only provide the necessary grip on winter roads if they have enough thread depth. Therefore, you should not take them to the limit of 1.6 millimeters. “It is recommended to switch to new winter tires much earlier, best when the thread depth has reached 4 millimeters,” says Thierry Delesalle of the online tire shop Tirendo. de.
is offered at many locations in the fall and is advisable especially for older cars. 4. Necessary care Over time, sludge, salt and Co. can damage the paint and the car’s body. Therefore, regular care is a must. When doing that, you should always check your winter tires’ thread depth and pressure. Check your emergency equipment You should not only check your tires, brakes and light at the beginning of the cold season. A look into the trunk to check your emergency equipment is now mandatory as well. Especially when driving a used car, which many novice drivers do, the expiration date of the first-aid kit should be checked and a warning triangle should be in the car. “In addition to a completely stocked first-aid kit and a warning triangle, warning vests must also be carried in cars in Germany,” says Delesalle. He also recommends putting warm clothes, hot beverages and something to eat in the car in case you run into a traffic jam on the Autobahn during winter. When cleaning your car, you should always check your tires’ thread depth and pressure.
3. Prepare your vehicle’s technology for winter Winter weather does not only pose a challenge to novice drivers, it also challenges your vehicle’s technology. Therefore, it is recommended to regularly check tires, battery and lights to avoid annoying breakdowns while on the road. A tip: A free light check Bavarian Times | 28

(djd). As exciting as getting your drivers license may be, many challenges await novice drivers, especially during fall and winter. It’s a fact that driving safely in rain, fog, ice and snow can only be trained when those road conditions are actually present. The more important it is to adjust your way of driving and to make sure your car is technically prepared for the cold season. Following are four important tips:

Stains Happen: 2018 Equinox Designed for Everyday Life Durable, easy-cleaning seat materials inspired by social media research People turn to social media to share experiences and track the latest trends in fashion and design. So does Chevrolet. When working on the 2018 Equinox’s interior, the design team crafted a comfortable, fashion-forward interior with features and materials developed for easier everyday use. During the process, they followed real people on Instagram and other social media channels, along with designers and lifestyle influencers, monitoring color and fabric trends as well as common consumer problems such as dark-wash denim staining other fabrics it touches — including new-vehicle seats. “Many fashion trends disappear after a year of two, while the Equinox is designed for the long haul, making the durability of its materials very important,” said Mara Kapsis, color and trim designer for the 2018 Equinox. “By following real people and absorbing the little things in life that help or hinder them — such as photos posted of muddy paws, spilled drinks or stains on the seats — we learned more about how we could make the new Equinox easier to live with and enjoy every day.”
The 2018 Equinox interior offers a durable denim-like seat fabric that is easy to clean, or available leather seating surfaces with a new treatment that resists staining and scuffing. The denim-like material’s appearance and color were inspired by contemporary trends in black denim clothing, while the material offers exceptional wear resistance and easy clean-up. “The fabric is very durable, while the color and even the pattern help hide dirt and stains,” said Kapsis. “It’s also very easy to vacuum and clean, which saves owners time and helps keep the interior looking great year after year.”
As for the available leather-trimmed seats, the newly developed surface treatment makes it easier to clean any “bleeding” of other materials such as new jeans and annoying scuffs from black leather belts or boots. “The Equinox is designed for the way our customers live,” said Kapsis. “Complementing its style with durable, easy-to-clean materials helps ensure it and its owners make a fashion statement every day.” Fashion forecasting was also part of the process, as the design team needed to anticipate color trends about three years ahead of the Equinox’s launch, which is typical for vehicle design. “More than anticipating where design will be when the vehicle is introduced, you’ve got to balance it with a timeless quality that will keep it looking modern for years to come,” said Kapsis. “There’s risk involved with that, but it paid off with the new Equinox.” About the 2018 Equinox The all-new 2018 Equinox is a fresh and modern compact SUV that features an expressive design, increased cargo space, the latest connectivity, an expanded roster of available safety features and an all-new range of turbocharged engines — including the segment’s first turbo-diesel. Purposeful technologies are designed to help keep passengers safe, comfortable and connected. Teen Driver is offered, along with safety features such as Safety Alert Seat, Surround Vision, Forward Collison Alert with Following Distance Indicator and more. The 2018 Equinox is on sale now, starting at $24,525 (including destination charge). (Chevrolet) Bavarian Times | 32

The XC60 has been the Swedish car company’s most popular vehicle. More than one-million units have been sold worldwide since it was introduced in 2008. The First-Ever 2018 BMW X2: powerful and agile
Today, BMW announced the first-ever BMW X2, a new breed of car takes on the stage as the newest addition to the BMW X family featuring an unmistakable design with sporty yet urban genes. The car’s specifically tuned chassis and xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system, promise undiluted driving fun. The cutting-edge BMW TwinPower Turbo engine strikes the ideal balance between sporting dynamics and exceptional efficiency powering this Sports Activity Coupe in just 6.3 seconds from 0-60 mph. The latest digital services from BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW ConnectedDrive Services add the necessary technology for the first-ever BMW X2 to fit perfectly into a seamlessly connected lifestyle. The bold, uncompromising nature of the first-ever BMW X2 is evident at first sight and stands out from the crowd in any setting. Even next to its bigger brothers, the BMW X4 and BMW X6, the BMW X2 makes a distinctive impression with its unique design language. The main contributing factor is the car’s exterior design, which essentially combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupe with the robust construction of a BMW X model. “The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice
President BMW Group Design, in describing the first-ever BMW X2. “Its standalone vehicle concept brings a new, fresh and exciting facet of the BMW to the compact segment.” On the road, the BMW X2 has the poise of an athlete in peak condition. This is true for the basic version and even more so for M Sport X models. The BMW X2 M Sport X package combines design elements from BMW M and the BMW X family. The first-ever 2018 BMW X2 will be available in Spring 2018 with pricing to be announced closer to market launch. The first ever BMW X2: powerful and agile. The BMW X2 has an invigoratingly fresh feel to it even in its standard specification. It immediately stands out as a BMW X model, yet it has a highly distinctive and unique appearance. This is partly due to its unique proportions, the execution of many of its details, the placement of the BMW roundel and the reinterpretation of a BMW design icon – the kidney grille. In addition, the black strip of body trim encircling the body produces the characteristically robust X model look, while lending visual emphasis to the ground clearance. A distinctive character define the first-ever BMW X2. Many of the design details emphasize the BMW X2’s standalone nature while simultaneously and unequivocally signaling its membership of the X family. The iconic BMW kidney grille is just one example, turning the familiar trapezoidal shape on its head and instead widening from top to bottom. This is the first time this design detail has seen the light of day on a modern BMW. The C-pillars host two characteristic BMW features: the hallmark BMW Hofmeister kink and, for the first time on a BMW X model, the BMW roundel. There is something special about the design of both these items. As an integral element of the C-pillar, the Hofmeister kink on the BMW X2 is slightly elongated and does not cross over the door line. This boosts the dynamic looks of this Sports Activity Coupe. The BMW roundel on the C-pillars invokes a design cue much admired on classic BMW coupes such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL, and ensures the car is instantly recognizable on the road. BMW HP4 Race Named Best Superbike Among Cycle World’s Ten Best Bikes for 2017
The BMW HP4 Race – BMW Motorrad’s all-new racetrack-only, limited-edition superbike – has earned top honors among Cycle World’s “Ten Best Bikes for 2017”. Named “Best Superbike,” the 215 hp masterpiece of engineering prowess represents the most exclusive motorcycle ever offered by BMW. It is the first motorcycle in the world to offer a fully carbon frame and fully carbon wheels; and each handmade edition is identified with a sequentially numbered carbon badge on the milled fork bridge, ranging from 001/750 to 750/750. “We are extremely proud to receive this coveted award from Cycle World right out of the gates with this bike,” commented Michael Peyton, Vice President, BMW Motorrad North America. “The HP4 pushes the boundaries for racing performance in ways that were previously unimaginable; and it advances motorcycle technology in ways that will benefit riders across our entire model range, both on and off the track.”
Featured in the November issue of Cycle World (and www. cycleworld.com), the BMW HP4 is hailed by editors, who write: “In a world of super superbikes, the BMW HP4 Race takes it a step beyond. It is in many ways more exotic than those machines raced at the pinnacle of the sport in World Superbike. The 377-pound HP4 Race weighs, for example, only 7 pounds more than the World Superbike-class minimum weight limit, and that’s with a full tank of fuel. Such is the glory of the bike’s carbon-fiber frame, swingarm, and wheels. But the finest components complete this beautiful track-only machine: an Öhlins FGR 300 fork and TTX 36 GP shock, Brembo GP4 PR Monoblock brake calipers, and Forged Pankl rods in an engine that is claimed to make 215 hp. Some things are too fantastic to be common. The HP4 Race is one of those things.”
(BMW USA)
2018 BMW HP4 Race makes its U.S. Debut at 13th Annual Barber Vintage Festival BMW Motorrad USA is bringing something very new to one of the largest vintage motorcycle festivals: the 2018 BMW HP4 Race. This 215 hp masterpiece of engineering prowess represents the most exclusive motorcycle ever offered by BMW; it is a handmade, racetrack-only limited-edition superbike that will only be available to 750 racing enthusiasts worldwide. Reinforcing its exclusivity, each HP4 Race is identified with a sequentially numbered carbon badge on the milled fork bridge,
ranging from 001/750 to 750/750. The HP4 Race – the first motorcycle in the world to offer a fully carbon frame and fully carbon wheels – will be showcased at the BMW display in the vendor area as well as in the pit area with BMW Motorrad Motorsports Advisor and test rider Nate Kern. Festival attendees will have no trouble locating it, as the bike will be started up periodically throughout the weekend and the roar of its purebred engine will be unmistakable.
