Grafenwoehr, Germany -- “We thank you fro your partnership and for your understanding an ask for it in the future,” said Brig. Gen. Antonio A. Aguto Jr. with regard to the exercises in 2018. Bavaria with Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Training Areas are the core of the U.S. Army’s and NATO alliance’s training in Europe. “The strong presence of our German friends and partners is a sign of the excellent friendship and cooperation we enjoy here in Bavaria,” said Col. Lance . Varney, the commander of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria during his welcome remarks at the New Year’s reception. Together with Brig. Gen. Antonio A. Aguto Jr., 7th Army Training Command, Varney had invited guests to the Tower View Conference Center. “Happy New Year” was the motto of the hand-shaking in the receiving line as the commanders and command sergeants major greeted their guests from the entire Oberpfalz region. Dr. Boris Niklas from the Bavarian State Chancellery, County Commissioners Richard Reisinger (Amberg-Sulzbach) and Deputy County Commissioners Albert Nickl (Neustadt/Waldnaab) and Arnold Kimmerl from Schwandorf. For all mayors present, Mayors Edgar Knobloch (Grafenwoehr), Hans-Martin Schertl (Vilseck) and Bernhard Graf from Hohenfels were welcomed. State Parliamentarian Annette Karl and members of the German Armed

Forces, police and other host nation administrations were also among the guests. Brig. Gen. Antonio A. Aguto Jr.. 7th ATC commanding general, started his speech with “Grüß Gott und herzlich willkommen.” “As in pat times, the U.S. Army, its partners and Bavaria stand side by side to deter aggressors and defend the freedom of democracy. This community, our friends and our partnership are extremely important for our alliance,” said the general. “Bavaria with Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels are the core of the training. We train NATO nations and nearly all Eastern European partners,” said Aguto. “2017 was a good year and 2018 promises to be an even better year,” he announced. The training command in Grafenwoehr was selected for one of the largest and most important U.S. Army and NATO exercises. “Participants from 15 nations with soldiers from all services and weapons systems will train; not a quite endeavor,” said Aguto and asked for understanding. The commander of the training command pointed out that successful exercises also equal growth for the military installation. Aguto said he was proud to call Bavaria his home and, on behalf of all Americans stationed here, thanked all guests for their friendship. | by Gerald Morgenstern Bavarian Times | 4

The new secretary and his wife visited Grafenwoehr Training Area on Jan. 30. "It is nice to be back in Grafenwoehr," said Esper upon arrival. Esper remembers Grafenwoehr from his time as a young officer when he was stationed in Italy and came to Grafenwoehr for training. While the secretary left to visit Hohenfels Training Area, following a town hall meeting with soldiers and civilians, his wife Leah stayed in Grafenwoehr and visited several facilities.

In the “Welcome Center” in building 244, garrison town mayors Edgar Knobloch, Grafenwoehr and Hans-Martin Schertl, Vilseck explained the good cooperation between the American families and their hosts. Many municipal facilities in both towns are also used by Americans in their “home away from home.” Therefore, regional leisure facilities are also presented in the welcome center. “My husband and I care a lot about the well-being, the care facilities and support for our soldiers and their families, and they are excellent in Grafenwoehr,” said Esper after her visit.

Mayor Edgar Knobloch is happy about the promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli

“He is one of the most intelligent people I know,” said Gen. Walter Piatt, praising his former successor. During his farewell in Grafenwoehr, before going to Hawaii, Cavoli received his second star. Now, the officer with Italian-American roots, receives his third star and takes command in Wiesbaden of all U.S. Army soldiers in Europe as lieutenant general. Knobloch said that making a third star in only a year is not only proof of Cavoli’s excellent human skills but also of his exemplary performance as a soldier. Per WhatsApp from Hawaii, Cavoli informed his friend Edgar that he was returning to Germany. “The entire family is happy except for son Alex who is a little sad because he goes surfing in Hawaii four times per week, which he won’t be able to do in Wiesbaden,” he said in his message. “The Cavolis felt at home in Grafenwoehr. His sons Nick and Alex used the leisure facilities such as the outdoor pool, his wife Christina regularly went shopping on the farmers’ market,” says Knobloch. The families met for get-togethers and bike tours. The Cavolis always attended city events and mayor and general rode to-

gether in a sow trough during the traditional Fischerfest race. "All generals, Piatt, Cavoli, and now Aguto and the garrison commanders have set examples for their soldiers regarding good host nation relations,” says Knobloch happily. “Lt. Gen. Cavoli was the first general to attend a city council meeting and provide current information; problems could always be solved one-on-one,” reports the mayor. And these relations to Wiesbaden can only be an advantage. “Grafenwoehr Training Area is of key importance to the future of our forces in Europe,” the former 7th ATC commander said in a speech. “It is great to have a friend in Wiesbaden,” says Knobloch. “The city counts on Grafenwoehr continuing to be an important U.S. installation.” In his personal message to Knobloch, Cavoli said he’d use every opportunity to come from Wiesbaden to Grafenwoehr. Therefore, Knobloch is hopeful to see his friend more often again. Cavoli took command of U.S .Army Europe in Wiesbaden on Jan, 18, 2018. | by Gerald Morgenstern Bavarian Times | 6

About Easter lambs, Easter rabbits and “egg picking“ There are many Easter traditions in the Oberpfalz region

Easter, the most important catholic celebration of the year, remembers the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday, or rather during the night of Easter. During that night, Christians take dark bread with raw or cooked ham, salt, Easter bread, Easter lambs and eggs, of course, into church which are consecrated during the church service and make up the Easter breakfast. The Easter candle with lamb, victory flag, cross and cicatrices is a typical symbol of Easter, just like the Easter fire that is ignited during the Easter night and passed on. It is a symbol of the love of God that is dispersed. After the church service, a large fire is ignited in front of the church. In earlier days, wooden sticks were held into the fire to later use them to ignite the fire in the oven at home. It’s a family tradition to color and stylishly and artfully deco-

rate the white or brown eggs bought in the super market. There are funny traditions regarding the eggs, one of which is the so-called “egg picking.” The combatants duel each other with the tops of their hardboiled eggs. The combatant whose egg survives the fight without breaking, wins. The Easter lamb is a symbol of defenselessness and often found in Easter baskets, home-baked by the women. There are also Easter wreaths with an egg in the center. “The Easter rabbit which originally is not a Christian symbol was first mentioned in 1682- It did not become popular until the 20th century because it sells so well,” explains Professor Dr. Hermann Kirchhoff in one of his books. Kids get an Easter rabbit made of chocolate and many sweet Easter eggs which are put in an Easter nest which is hidden so the kids have to search for it. There are always screams of joy when the girls and boys find the nests. Before Easter, decorated Easter fountains can be admired in the Oberpfalz and in Franconia. In Grafenwoehr, the Vintage Fountain at the bottom of the Annaberg mountain is decorated every year with more than 3,000 Easter eggs. It is especially fascinating to look at in the dark when it is illuminated.

Grafenwoehr, Germany – Why are there Easter rabbits? Why is there a fire in front of the church? And what is “egg picking” all about? Although we do not get as many presents at Easter as we get at Christmas, Easter is the most important celebration for Christians during the course of the year. The Oberpfalz region features a lot of Easter traditions.

Visit the enormous DEVIL`S CAVE! Please note: In the Devil‘s Cave, there are over 400 steps. Photography is allowed only without flash! Please stay with the group! The residents of this region had named the tremendous cave gorge the „Teufelsloch“ (Devil`s Hole) hundreds of years ago. But after the discovery, as one could see the huge dimensions of the cave, it was called „Teufelshöhle“, which means `Devil`s Cave`. „Devil`s Hole“ is the first hall in the cave, is 30 feet high and above it there are 50 feet of stone. 27 years

further there was a cave-in. In October 1922 the cave-explorer, a mining engineer called Prof. Dr. Hans Brandt, gave the order to break a passage through the cave-in. His workers had to dig 30 feet before they found the natural course of the cave. During the next ten years the cave was extended to one mile, which can be visited up to now. Right behind the entrance, one can see the first limestone- formations. The „Pope`s Crown“, the „Organ“ and the „Curtain“. They are between 10 000 and 12 000 years old. The limestones hanging from the ceiling are called stalactites and the ones growing out of the ground are the stalagmites. To build up 1 mm of limestone it takes 13 years. Next to our journey into „Devil`s Cave` is

Bears Grotto. Visitors can see even a complete skeleton of a cave bear. The bear was approximately 12 feet high and his weight was 900 pounds. After passing the „Nibelung Grotto“ the visitor enters the „Barbarossa Dome“. In this hall one can see „Barbarossas Beard“ which forms a fine waterfall. A stalagmite arising from the ground in the form of a Pagoda Pillar „Emperor Barbarossa“ is the most beautiful formation in the cavern and it is 200 000 years old. If the visitor looks downwards in the „Barbarossa Dome“ he can see the deepest location of the cave: it is situated 230 feet below the upper surface of the cavern. The visitor has to go up „Mount Calvary“ and after he has reached the last step, he can see

the multi-colour illuminated „Crucifixion“ to his right. After the „Three-Kaisers-Grotto“ and the „Witches Shaft“ the visitor enters the „Colossal Hall“. This cave is 42 feet high and above it there are 147 feet of stone. In this hall one can find the two oldest limestones of `Devil`s Cave`. The first stalacmite resembles a „tree“, the other one is called „Goliath“. Their age is thought to be over 300 000 years. Then one walks through the „Candle Hall“ and finally reavches the exit. As the exit is 82 feet higher, the visitor has to pass a romantic gorge to get back to the entrance.

West Wall Bunkers on Grafenwoehr Training Area

Hay-wire circuits, pole barricades and tank ditches are located in front of the bunkers near Pappenberg.

“Fortress fighting area Grafenwoehr“ Several meters thick bunker ruins, armored with lots of iron, line open areas and tank roads on the training area. They are witnesses of the disastrous time when Adolf Hitler directed that the bunker types of the West wall to be built on the “Fortress fighting area Grafenwoehr.“ While the original West Wall with its more than 22,000 bunkers and barricades was built along the border of France, a miniature version with bunkers true to scale was built on the training area in 1938. A large number of workers was necessary to finish the bunkers in a short amount of time. When he was a young man, the deceased mason Georg Brunner was one of the workers. Trucks were rented and farmers with their horse and oxen carriages hired to transport sand, gravel, concrete, iron and other materials, Brunner reported. The motorized concrete mixers ran and the craftsmen and helpers of the Reich’s Work Service worked day and night on the construction sites. Group shelters, casemates, artillery observation posts, regimental fighting positions, communication towers, shooting positions and other types of bunkers were built. Several tons heavy steel caps, observation domes, steel notches and towers were built into the various bunkers. Several meters high dry and wet tank ditches, lines of wooden posts, chevaux-de-frise, concrete bumps and hay-wire circuits were located in front of the bunkers on the Pappenberg defense area. Bridges were built there as well.

West Wall exercise never took place Hitler toured the construction sites of the bunkers in June 1938. An unprecedented number of maneuvers took place on the training area during that time. The large West Wall exercise entitled “Fortress War Exercise Grafenwoehr“ was scheduled for August 1939. But the huge bunker exercise never took place because World War II started only a few weeks later with the attack on Poland. During the war, the bunkers were used for various tests and as target construction bunkers and artillery observation posts, reported Franz Felten, an artillery soldier stationed in Grafenwoehr in 1938. The facilities were destroyed with vast amounts of explosives after the invasion of the Americans. Only two of the 34 structures were not demolished. The construction of the West Wall system can still be retraced today by following the bunker ruins and defense lines that are located everywhere.

Bunker ruins with several meters thick walls can be found everywhere on the training area. The bunkers were demolished by the Americans in 1945.

Steel domes and towers weighing several tons were built into the bunkers.

Elvis program starts in the summer

The Culture - and Military Museum filmed at original locations on the training area where Elvis Presley took part in military exercises. The camera team was accompanied by Margit Ringer, BR Radio (from left), Franz Zeilmann, cultural manager Birgit Plößner (with Elvis photo), contemporaries Peter Thometzki, Gisela Zechmayer and Erich Götz as well as the camera men Robert Neuber and Thassilo Scharnagel.

Grafenwoehr, Germany -- Interviews with contemporaries will be turned into films about Elvis’ stay in der Oberpfalz region and shown in a special exhibition in the Culture - and Military Museum starting in September. In addition to the exhibition, special guided tours and bus tours to the locations on the training area that were frequented by Soldier Presley will also be offered. In summer, the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Elvis’ stay in the Oberpfalz starts musically with a large Elvis concert on July 7, 2018 in the Grafenwoehr city park, hosted by the Culture - and Military Museum. U.S. vintage cars, rock ’n’ roll dance performances and snacks from the 1950s will be presented along with “Ron Glaser and the Ridin' Dudes,” the winner of the European Elvis contest and the highlight of the evening, says Plößner.

Following Elvis’ tracks in the Oberpfalz region Museum interviews contemporaries Grafenwoehr, Germany -- “Elvis was very, very friendly and courteous.” That’s how Gisela Zechmayer describes the King of Rock and Roll, whom she met when he was a young soldier training in Grafenwoehr. Accompanied by a camera team, the Culture - and Military Museum interviewed contemporaries at original locations on the training area to include barbers Peter Thometzki and Erich Götz. Sixty years ago, Elvis came to Grafenwoehr for the first time to participate in an exercise. The Culture - and Military Museum Grafenwoehr uses this opportunity for a new special exhibition in the fall. Preparations have already begun. “Last year’s exhibition showed that there are still some knowledge gaps regarding Elvis’ stay. We try to close them by interviewing contemporaries, “ says Birgit Plößner, cultural manager in the museum.

Therefore, people who met Elvis in the Oberpfalz region are interviewed on camera about their encounters with the former soldier, if possible, at original locations. Gisela Zechmayer was lucky and met Elvis frequently in the record department of the shopping center on the training area. She was a sales assistant then, selling, among other things, his records. She was also a friend of Elisabeth Stefaniak, a German-American girl, who dated Elvis and who he took with him to Bad Nauheim where she became his secretary. Peter Thometzki and Erich Götz are two other contemporaries who still work in the barber shop and cut the soldiers’ hair in Camp Algiers. Here, Thometzki saw Elvis walk by who stayed in one of the camp’s barracks. Both also claim to have seen Elvis in Micky’s Bar. Franz Zeilmann from the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria’s public affairs office arranged the visit and the shooting on the training area. Robert Neuber and Thassilo Scharnagel of Panorama Video Production recorded the interviews with the contemporaries. Mar-

git Ringer From Bayerischer Rundfunk radio also followed Elvis’ tracks. Contemporaries from Wies bus company in Weiden, the Golden Lamm restaurant in Hirschau were also interviewed about Elvis’ stay. The Culture - and History Museum Grafenwoehr is still looking for additional contemporaries who met Elvis in Grafenwoehr or elsewhere in the region and possibly have photos of their encounter or autographs from him. Contemporaries should call the museum at 09641-8501 or send a mail to info@museumgrafenwoehr.de. | by Gerald Morgenstern

Trink ma no a Mass (Let’s drink another mass of beer)! Bavarian must be studied.

Bavarian for Beginners – Learning Bavarian made easy Every year anew, Bavarian fests are opened with a loud “O’zapft is!“ (“It has been tapped!“). And “Schleich di!“ is not a polite request to quietly leave but means to get going as fast as possible. Following is a small but very useful Bavarian Translator that might be of great help to you when you’re in Bavaria.

Characteristics of the Bavarian language and phonetics There are many Bavarian dialects. Following are the most important basic rules to make pronouncing Bavarian words correctly easy for beginners: 1. An “a” can be pronounced in two different ways. There is an a that sounds in Bavarian like an o, and one that is pronounced clearly and unstressed. The Bavarian word “do“ is pronounced “da” in High German and means “here” or “there.” The sentence “Do kim i her” = “That’s where I come from.” However, the article “der” (the) or “ein” (a/an) is pronounced clear and soundless in Bavarian. “Wos für a Depp!” means “What an idiot!” or “da Bruader” for “the brother.” 2. The phonetic sound sequence “ie” or “il” is pronounced “ui” in Bavaria. The small word “viel” (many) thus turns into “vui” or “hilf” (help) into “huif.” 3. If a “ue” appears in a word, the Bavarian pronounces it sequentially as “u” and “I.” Thus, “füllen” (filling) becomes “fuin,” and “Gefühl” (emotion/feeling) turns into “Gfuih” and so on and so forth. 4. The consonant “l” at the end of a word is mostly silent, i.e. is not pronounced. Therefore, “schnell” (fast) turns into “schney” and “mal” (once) into “moi.” 11 | Bavarian Times

Simple greetings and courtesies You should definitely know the following Bavarian greetings and courtesies so you can appropriately respond to them and will not be regarded as an unfriendly “Saupreiss” (see below). But beware: Native Bavarians often use rather rough expressions and many beginners mistake that for rudeness which is not always the case. So just stay calm and you can’t go wrong.

Here, we would like to address the most deadly sin at Bavarian fests: The wrong pronunciation of the word “Maß” (phonetically “Mass”), meaning a liter of beer. Although the word “Maß” does indeed go back to describing a measuring unit for a mug of beer (exactly one liter), it is pronounced with a short, hard “a” as in the German word “nass” (wet). If you do not pronounce it correctly, your Bavarian neighbors in the beer tent will not only laugh at you, they will also make a lot of jokes. Additionally, you should never call a Bavarian farmer a “Bauer” (German word for farmer). In Bavaria, this word is regarded as an insult. The correct word to use is “Landwirt” (“land keeper”). Using the word “Saupreiss” (Sow Prussian) is a different story: It is a coy name for all persons that come from the other 15 federal states and do not speak Bavarian. But don’t worry, the word is not intended to be a true insult.

Lasting shine Expert tips for an effective and gentle nail care (djd/pt). If you want to do something good for your nails, you should regularly care for them. And that is not difficult either. Some household remedies can prevent drying-out and chipping. Nail designer Irina Claus-Gutunoiu of Bio Sculpture has seven care tips. And here they are: • Peeling and applying cream: Apply a peeling on your wet hands (available in drug stores and perfumeries), massage it in and rinse it off with lukewarm water. Applying cream to your hands and nails afterwards makes them softer and more resistant.

Photo Credit: djd/BSD Biosculpture Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG

Bathing and massaging: Bathe your hands once a week in lukewarm almond, olive, or jojoba oil. This replenishes your nails with oil and moisture. If they are brittle and dry, a massage with a special oil might help.

Caring for your nails with a nail file: If you want to avoid injuries, you should care for your nails with a nail file rather than cutting them with nail scissors or nail clippers. They can cause small cuts in the nail. Emery boards and glass nail files are gentler than metal files.

Avoiding ingrown nails: If you do not round your nails on the edges that much when you shorten them, you can avoid ingrown nails. Tip: Always file your nails in a straight motion from the edges to the center. Do not cut your cuticles, softly push them back with a cotton swab instead, or a special manicure tool made from wood or rubber.

A bath in lukewarm oil and a subsequent massage provide the nails with moisture and oil.

Dirt and chemicals: Dirt below the nails should not be removed with metal tools but with a soft nailbrush. If you wear gloves while doing your household chores, your nails will stay clean and won’t be negatively affected by cleansers or dishwater.

The right nail polish remover: Nail polish removers containing acetone or alcohol are poison for your nails according to the German Skin and Allergy Aid because they withdraw oils from your nails that keep them strong and elastic. Therefore, you should better use solvent-free and oil emulsive nail polish removers.

A gentle outfit: To achieve a shiny look, experts gently push especially made stencils under the nails and then shape them with three or four layers of gel that contains caring substances.

Many women suffer from recurring bladder infections.

Bladder infections: How to prevent them from becoming a recurring problem

(djd). Aggravating cramps in the lower abdomen, a burning sensation when passing water and the constant sensation of having a full bladder? Bladder infections can be stressful. Fifty to seventy percent of all women suffer from a bladder infection at least once in their lifetime. Five to ten percent of those women experience recurring bladder infections. . Generally, chronic and acute bladder infections are caused by enterobacteria, mostly E. coli. Chronic bladder infections are either caused by bacteria that keep infiltrating the urinary tract or by a previous infection that was not completely cured and flares up again. A goldenrod cure helps to stop such a boomerang effect. Treating recurring bladder infections with genuine goldenrod Genuine goldenrod can be taken long-term if bladder infections keep recurring. The natural remedy has a diuretic effect, flushing out potential germs, preventing them from entering the bladder. Additionally, genuine goldenrod is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antispasmodic. Its constituent parts have a

potential healing effect on the mucous membrane of the bladder. Genuine goldenrod also helps to prevent the formation of urinary stones and their prestage, the so-called renal gravel. Antibiotics: Curse or blessing? Antibiotics effectively kill bacteria. Unfortunately, they do not only kill pathogenic germs, they also kill useful bacteria. If lactobacilli in the vagina are reduced, the environment in the vagina changes and becomes more basic. That allows pathogenic bacteria to transcend this barrier and infiltrate the urinary tract. Therefore, an antibiotics therapy can potentially lead to a bladder infection. Often, it is good enough to treat a bladder infection with natural remedies such as bearberries instead of taking antibiotics right away. By the way: Hormonal changes, e.g. during menopause, can also promote the onset of a bladder infection because changes in the hormone level can also cause changes of the vaginal environment. Vaginal ointments, such as witch hazel, can be used to maintain a healthy vaginal flora.

When modern life causes headaches How to handle health problems caused by stress

Headache patients should take time off to recover and relax. Mainly women suffer from stress caused by multiple responsibilities such as job, household and family.

(djd). Modern life offers us many opportunities but also puts high demands on us: Timelines and pressure to perform dominate our work environment. At the same time, we strive to spend sufficient time with family, friends and our hobbies. Additionally, we have to deal with an immense amount of information, have to be permanently available and must deal with multi-tasking due to the ever present digitalization. Life is constantly getting faster and more complex, increasing physical and psychological stress.

Prevent attacks If you regularly suffer from headaches caused by stress, you should take as many counter measures as you can to prevent attacks. It is extremely important that you make sure to have enough breaks and time to relax. Everybody has the chance to take small breaks or a little time off, e.g. for a short walk during lunch time, a soothing bath after work, a quiet hour on the sofa reading to your kids, or a relaxing yoga unit. Patients suffering from headaches should also make sure to drink a lot, get fresh air and forgo using smart phone, computer and tablet for two hours per day.

Fast aid when suffering from a headache This combination causes headaches and migraine. Those who suffer from it, know that. In a recent poll, a quarter of those interviewed cited stress at work or at home as one of the main causes for his or her ailments. When a headache starts, fast and reliable aid is necessary. Germany‘s Migraine and Headache Association (DMKG) recommends a three-part combination of acetylsalicylic acid, paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) and caffeine. This combination is available as an over the counter drug in pharmacies and works very effectively and quickly, thanks to the caffeine. Additionally, it can be used for regular headaches as well as for migraine headaches. Therefore, it is ideal, if you are in doubt about what you are suffering from.

Simply rinsing off pollen (djd). If you are allergic to pollen and you have spent an entire day outdoors, you often suffer from the aftereffects throughout the night. Tiny pollen attach themselves to clothes, hair and nose and continue to affect your health at home. Here’s what you can do against it: 1. Change and wash or keep your clothes outside the apartment after engaging in outdoor activities. 2. Shower and wash your hair immediately after getting home. This rinses off pollen that have attached themselves to you. 3. Rinse your nose with salt water to remove pollen from your nasal mucous membranes. This can also reduce swelling. It’s easiest with a nasal douche, available at your pharmacy. 4. Hay fever patients should regularly stay informed about the current pollen counts in the air.

Spring make you want to go outside. However, sneezing spells and itching eyes are often waiting for allergy sufferers out there.

The most common medication are antihistamines. Often, however, they do not provide complete relief or patients suffer from adverse reactions such as fatigue and dryness of the mouth. The root extract of locoweed (astragalus) might be an alternative. "Astragalus extract helps in 89 percent of all cases,” says Hartmut Dorstewitz, MD, general practitioner and specialist for naturopathic treatment. "Additionally, the extract has an excellent tolerability.” The natural remedy decreases the sensitivity against pollen by counterbalancing the immune system’s reaction and thus reducing the allergy symptoms. Tips for outdoor activities There are other protective measures allergy sufferers can take outdoors other than taking the appropriate medication. In the countryside, the amount of pollen is lowest in the evening, in the city in the morning. Outdoor training after a rain shower is less stressful because there are less pollen in the air. If the amount of pollen in the air is very high, it might be better to go to a fitness studio and train inside than take a long bike tour through blooming meadows. If you experience coughing or shortness of breath while exercising, you should stop and, if necessary, see a physician. Bavarian Times | 16

since breathing increases when exercising, allowing even more pollen to get into the respiratory system. There, the actually harmless plant parts cause an overreaction of the allergic person’s immune system which leads to the typical, agonizing discomforts such as sneezing attacks, itching eyes, running or congested nose. An effective treatment is then absolutely necessary to restore quality of life and prevent the development of asthma.

(djd). Finally, the time has come to be outdoors again. In spring, days get longer, temperatures rise, leaves turn green, enticing you to take a walk, ride your bike, go jogging or engage in many other outdoor activities. However, as people become active again, so do trees and plants which has a detrimental affect on people allergic to pollen. Tree pollen from poplar, willow, birch, beech, oak and pine, as well as pollen from dandelion and rapeseed cause running noses and tearing eyes.

Spring Clean-Up: Prepare your car for spring A thorough cleaning helps to avoid unnecessary damages and costs

One tip through the car wash and that’s it! Many car owners prepare their car for spring in a pretty Spartan way. Sooner or later, this restraint will be costly. If you do not thoroughly and consequently remove the traces of winter such as salt or split, they can turn into small spots of rust.

So if you want to start into the summer season well-prepared, you should first stop in the wash box before going through the automatic car wash. Using a steam cleaners is the best way to get into the smallest cracks to remove any damaging winter residues. This includes the bottom, the edges and folding of the doors, the trunk lid, engine hood and between the ventilation grills where often leaves have been collecting since fall. Use a lot of water and feeling. Like always, one rule also applies wash box: Hands off the engine compartment. Cleaning this part of the car should only be done by a specialist to avoid unnecessary damage to the electrics and the motor itself. Checking the windshield wipers is also important. Here, frost and snow may have also left behind their traces. The interior should be prepared for spring as well. First, items such as snow chains or snow shovels should be put back into the garage or the basement because this 17 | Bavarian Times

unnecessary weight increases fuel consumption. Then thoroughly vacuum the interior, moving the car seats into different positions, and finish by foam cleaning your seats. Ensure proper ventilation while cleaning your car because moisture on the inside will condense on the windows. The windows should be thoroughly cleaned as well with a window cleaner. And if you also exchange your air conditioning filter, check your lights, the horn and whether all other functions of your car work correctly, you will start into the warm season safely and well-prepared.

(dmd). When the first sun rays tickle your nose and all windows are opened widely, then the time has come for spring clean-up in and around your car. Taking care of your vehicle preserves its value and allows you to start safer, cheaper and happier into spring.

Winter tires are mandatory in many countries: Violations can be costly If you get caught, fines can be as high as 5,000 Euro

(dtd). If you still refuse to put winter tires on your car, you do not only put your safety at risk, you also run the risk of having to pay high fines. And you can’t escape them by going abroad either on the contrary: If you get caught, you can expect fines as high as 5,000 Euro. Following are the most important facts at a glance. Austria is one of the most popular countries for skiers. And one of the most expensive ones for those who refuse to mount winter tires. While vehicle owners and drivers in Germany can expect fines up to 80 Euro and one point in the German Traffic Registry, our Austrian neighbors have to pay much more in extreme cases. Although the basic fine (35 Euro) is relatively low compared to Germany, it can go up to 5,000 Euro if Austrian authorities determine that driving without winter tires endangers other drivers.

In Italy, fines are also much higher than in Germany. According to the German automobile club ADAC, driving without winter tires is fined with up to 338 Euro. However, regulations in Italy are more complicated but also more flexible than in Germany and only applicable on certain routes during certain weather conditions. The same applies to France where road signs indicate on which roads winter tires must be mounted if weather conditions require it. In Switzerland, winter tires are not mandatory despite the high number of mountain roads. Nevertheless, Swiss traffic law also promotes safety. If you cause an accident or obstruct traffic because of bad tires, punishment ranges from a short revocation of your drivers license to imprisonment of up to three years.

Your vehicle’s first aid kit is a potential life-saver and should always be equipped to the latest standards

(dtd). It can save lives in the case of an emergency: The first aid kit is one of the most important utensils drivers must carry with them in their car. However, to make sure it is usable when needed, you should regularly take a look at it and check whether it still meets current requirements.

German Traffic Law regulates what type of first aid items must be carried in a car. It states that vehicles with less than 22 passenger seats must carry a first aid kit. If you transport more passengers, needs two kits. If you get caught without a first aid kit in your car, you will be fined five Euro. If you take your car to the technical inspection and do not carry a first aid kit, it will get recorded as a minor deficiency. While traffic law does not regulate which first aid items must be in the first aid kit, you should ensure that it is always completely filled and meets as many requirements as possible. Since 2015, all first aid kits sold meet the German DIN-standards set in 2014. However, some of them have been lying around in cars for decades -completely forgotten.

Life-saver First Aid Kit

First aid kits produced after 1989 have an expiration date. Once that date has been reached, the content must be renewed and exchanged. First aid kits adhering to the 2014 standard, for example, must include a 14-part band aid set, a K-bandage set and two wet wipes for skin cleansing. Although it isn’t a legal requirement, you should check the content of your first aid kit to see if it meets current DIN-regulations. For information on what your first aid kit should contain, go to the ADAC webpage.

Regularly checking your engine’s oil-level, keeps your engine running for a long time.

How to correctly check your oil-level (dtd). Whether it’s summer or winter - if you are driving with an insufficient amount of motor oil, you run the risk of severely damaging your engine. Modern cars automatically display when it is time to replenish oil. Owners of older vehicles, however, have to manually check the oil-level. Following is a tutorial on how to properly do that.

However, it is not only the oil-level that is important. Texture and color are also of significant important. If you want to manually check whether everything is okay, you have to follow some important rules. First, the motor should be lukewarm. After a long trip, let it cool down for at least five minutes, or drive around the block if your car has been parked for a while.

Engines need regular care and check-ups. If you take good care of your engine, you can use it longer. One of the most important aspects is to check the oil-level because the engine does not work properly without a sufficient amount of oil. Careless drivers risk severe damage.

It is also important that your car is parked on flat ground so the liquid is not swashed in one direction, causing a false reading. Taking a look into your car’s manual tells you where the oil dipstick is located. Make sure you have paper towels readily available before checking the oil. They are usually available at every gas pump. First, slowly take out the oil dipstick and wipe it off. Then, carefully insert and take it out again. There are two markings at the lower end of the dipstick. The oil-level should be in-between those two markings, ideally in the middle of the two markings or higher. However, if it is closer to the lower marking, you should replenish it. Before doing that, however, take another look into the manual to ensure the oil you use has the right grade. If you use the wrong grade of oil, you risk damaging your engine. Bavarian Times | 20

Circle safely The most important traffic circle rules

The whole purpose of traffic circles is to keep traffic flowing and increase safety when two or more streets intersect. Traffic experts have identified eight points of conflict in a traffic circle that can lead to accidents. That is significantly less than the 32 that are being associated with a regular intersection. The reduced speed and the abolition of left turning lanes provide more safety, according to the ADAC. However, accidents still occur and that is mostly caused by drivers neglecting to follow the rules: Many don’t know how to correctly use the turn signal when driving in a traffic circle. According to German Traffic Law, you are not allowed to use your turn signal when entering a traffic circle but are obliged to turn it on when exiting. If you get caught violating that regulation, you will be fined ten Euro. The right of way in a traffic circle is also clearly defined: Vehicles in the traffic circle have the right of way. Therefore, you should already reduces your speed when approaching a traffic circle. When exiting, bicyclists have the right of way. Additionally, drivers exiting a traffic circle are expected to pay special attention to pedestrians and stop, if necessary.

When driving through a traffic circle with multiple lanes, those wishing to take the first or second exit, should move into the right lane while those circling longer, should use the inner lane. It is always important to pay attention to those traveling in the outer lane. If you wish to exit and cannot change into the right lane on time, it is safer to circle one more time.

The BMW 4 Series has a lower center of gravity than the BMW 3 Series (Coupe: -1.6 inches, Gran Coupe: -1.2 inches, Convertible: -0.8 inches), a wider track at the front (+0.5 inches) and rear (0.9 inches), plus specially configured kinematics, giving it all the ingredients needed for even more agile handling. A Star is reborn: 50th Anniversary Ford Mustang Bullitt Revives Silver Screen Legend with new Levels of Power •

New limited-edition Mustang Bullitt features retuned 5.0-liter V8 engine that packs at least 475 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque and tops out at 163 mph New version salutes 1968 movie car with effortlessly cool appearance, available classic Dark Highland Green exterior paint and subtle chrome accents; interior highlights include 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster and available RECARO® black leather-trimmed seats with unique green accent stitching Original 1968 Mustang GT fastback that starred alongside Steve McQueen in award-winning movie “Bullitt” drives onto Ford stage at North American International Auto Show, ending 40-year mystery about the film car’s whereabouts

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of iconic movie “Bullitt” and its fan-favorite San Francisco car chase, Ford introduces the new cool and powerful 2019 Mustang Bullitt. Third-generation member of the McQueen family, Molly, starred in a special movie of her own introducing the new third-generation Bullitt at the North American International Auto Show. In the film, Molly races a new Mustang Bullitt through a parking structure battling a Dodge Charger for the final free space. Helping it win that particular spot was the Bullitt’s upgraded 5.0-liter V8 engine that will deliver at least 475 horsepower and

420 lb.-ft. of torque, pushing the new Bullitt to a top speed of 163 mph – an 8 mph increase versus the latest Mustang GT. Special Edition As a special-edition model due out this summer – the all-new Mustang Bullitt is equipped with a manual transmission, and the gear shifter features a white cue ball shift knob as a nod to the original. The vehicle packages all Mustang GT Premium and Performance Package content into a vehicle that maintains the original Bullitt’s understated persona. An active valve performance exhaust system is standard with new Black NitroPlate™ exhaust tips, and retuned to give the car a signature burble, as well as new Open Air Induction System and Shelby GT350 intake manifold with 87mm throttle bodies and powertrain control module calibration for optimal performance. Other standard equipment includes a heated leather steering wheel and a 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster, identical in function to the cluster introduced on 2018 Mustang, but with a unique Bullitt welcome screen that starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony. “This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool,” said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. “As a designer, it’s my favorite Mustang – devoid of stripes, spoilers and Bavarian Times | 26

The Original

Two identical 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the filming of the classic Warner Bros. movie “Bullitt” that debuted in theaters on Oct. 17, 1968. After filming, the cars went their separate ways: the hero vehicle driven by McQueen in the movie was sold by Warner Bros. to a private buyer, and the other – used in many of the jumps during the famous chase scene – was sent to a salvage yard. That jumper vehicle resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017, but the other was lost to history. Until now. Sean Kiernan, owner of the hero vehicle, inherited the car in 2014 from his late father, Robert, who had purchased the vehicle in 1974. To fulfill his family’s lifelong dream, Sean contacted Ford and the two parties worked together to reveal his movie star car alongside the allnew 2019 Mustang Bullitt at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything – it’s just cool.” Exterior paint choices are limited to Shadow Black and the classic Dark Highland Green – as worn in the movie. Other features that pay tribute to the car McQueen drove are subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic torque thrust 19-inch aluminum wheels, red painted Brembo™ brakes, and a unique black front grille. Inside and out, the vehicle uses minimal badging; only the circular faux gas cap Bullitt logo on the rear center is visible on the exterior. The leather-trimmed interior features unique green accent stitching on the dashboard, door panels, center console and seats. Aside from the two exterior paint choices, Mustang Bullitt buyers are limited to three factory-installed options: Bullitt Electronics Package includes navigation, driver memory seats and mirrors, upgraded sound system and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert that can alert customers of vehicles detected in difficult-to-see places. MagneRide® semi-active suspension system optimizes driving performance. RECARO® black leather-trimmed seats “When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have,” said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. “It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass.” That reputation was born after a Mustang GT fastback played a prominent role in the 1968 movie, and most notably in a chase scene that set new standards in filmmaking. The film’s nearly 10-minute-long sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen in his Mustang through the streets of San Francisco. (Ford USA) 27 | Bavarian Times

“You know, it was never our intention to keep this car a secret from everybody,” Sean said. “It just kind of happened with life. I’m just completely buzzing to join with Ford and the new Bullitt and show this car to the world on one of the biggest stages there is.”

Ford F-150 the favorite vehicle of America’s Military

Ford F-150 has again been named most popular vehicle among America’s active and retired military service members, according to an analysis of former and active-duty military personnel using United Services Automobile Association’s car buying service. This honor reflects 41 years of Ford’s uncompromising commitment to quality, durability and resilience with F-Series as America’s best-selling truck and 36 years as America’s best-selling vehicle.

According to Jimmy Spears, auto analyst for USAA, a financial services group, Ford F-150 was the No. 1 purchase choice across all branches of the U.S. military last year. “We are proud and humbled that those who protect and defend our country choose Ford F-Series,” said Todd Eckert, Ford truck group marketing manager. “F-150’s high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body is designed to serve customers who are used to performing in the harshest of environments and who rely

on the capability, durability, and functionality delivered consistently by Built Ford Tough.” This is the latest accolade for the new 2018 F-150 lineup, which earned 2018 Truck of Texas and 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year recognitions, along with the 2018 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award for the fourth year in a row. Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4² wins 2018 MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Award Since it was originally conceived in 1979 as a vehicle to be used primarily in tough off-road terrain, the G-Class has remained an icon in and of itself. The Mercedes-Benz G550 4x42 is the most capable G-Class ever, boasting innovative portal axles, three locking differentials, a ground clearance of more than 17" and a 4.0L V8 biturbo engine. MotorWeek has named the MercedesBenz G550 4x42 the 'Best Dream Machine' among their 2018 Drivers' Choice Awards. One of the auto industry's most coveted honors, the MotorWeek Drivers' Choice Awards were announced at the largest consumer-driven auto show in North America, the 2018 Chicago Auto Show. In selecting the annual Drivers' Choice Awards, MotorWeek's editorial staff evaluates more than 150 cars, trucks and sports utility vehicles every year. Winners are chosen based on driving performance, technology, practicality, fuel efficiency and value for the dollar. "What makes the Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4² a MotorWeek Best Dream Machine is that it is not only outrageous to see, but far more importantly it's a way for Mercedes-Benz engineers to showcase what the brand is truly capable of. Driving it, owners

can enjoy their labor of love, on or off road, in one of the most amazing vehicles we've ever driven," says MotorWeek creator and host, John Davis. First offered for the U.S. market in 2017, the G550 4x42 offers unprecedented amounts of off-road capability, even in comparison with the G550, and boasts a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that produces 416 hp and 450 lb-ft. Unlike a conventional axle, the portal axles found on the 4x42 allow for axle input and the wheel center to be two drastically different heights. By utilizing a series of gears similar to those found in a transmission, power is transferred from the G-Class' rigid axles downward to the wheel hub. These portal axles have afforded the 4x42 the ability to off-road where even heavily-modified off-road vehicles wouldn't dare thanks to massive ground clearance, fording depth, approach, departure and breakover angles. An episode of MotorWeek featuring the Mercedes-Benz G550 4x42 is currently scheduled to air on public television stations beginning February 10th – check your local listings to tune in.

Volvo XC60 Named Chicago News 2018 SUV/Crossover of the Year The all-new Volvo XC60 luxury SUV is the Chicago News 2018 SUV/Crossover of the Year. Editors presented the trophy to Volvo at the Chicago Auto Show today. The award comes on the heels of the XC60 being named 2018 North American Utility of the Year and Detroit Free Press Utility of the Year, besting a long list of other new models from European, Asian, and domestic carmakers for both accolades. "Our award for the SUV/Crossover of the Year goes to the sophisticated XC60, the muscular T8 hybrid,” said Jason Saini, pro race car driver and Chicago News automotive writer and host. “As the rest of the new Volvo line-up, it boasts a lot of safety features, including radar cruise control and autopilot semi-autonomous capabilities. It’s a hint of what driving will be like in the future, and a key component to Volvo’s safety commitment.”

Anders Gustafsson, President and CEO, Volvo Car USA, said, “As our most popular model it’s so important that the XC60 continues to get recognition from even local media like Chicago News. We hope others will appreciate the safety, technology, design and value the XC60 delivers.” All-new XC60 in detail Completely redesigned for 2018 the XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others, but to drive. The exterior has an athletic stance thanks to Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture platform (SPA) with exquisite details including signature Thor’s Hammer headlights. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology - all perfectly blended together. The XC60 provides a true Scandinavian experience which will make Volvo customers feel special.

The XC60 seats five and features all the safety of a Volvo. Pricing starts at $41,500. Features like a standard 9-inch tablet-like touch screen, available driftwood-inspired wood trim, and integrated mobile device storage under the second row seats are unique to XC60. The XC60 is available with a wide range of powertrains including the award-winning T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid at the top of the powertrain range delivering 400-horsepower and an EPA-rated economy of 56 mpg equivalent. The new XC60, one of the safest cars ever made, is fully-loaded with new technology. Steer Assist has been added to the groundbreaking City Safety system. A new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation uses steer assist to help mitigate head-on collisions, while Volvo’s Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS) now uses Steer Assist functionality to reduce the risk of lane-changing collisions. Pilot Assist, Volvo’s advanced semi-autonomous driver assistance system, which takes care of steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 80 mph, is available in the new XC60 as an option. Volvo Cars’ driver infotainment and connected services offer, Sensus, and the Volvo On Call app both receive a graphical update with improved usability. Smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available.

Checkpoint Charlie An exhibition in the Black Box at Checkpoint Charlie informs visitors about the times of the Cold War. The former allied checkpoint is the only place in the entire world where the superpowers faced each other with weapons in 1961. Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall divided the city for more than 28 years and many Berlin tourists want to know where it was located. Several city tours follow its traces, even by Trabi. The Berlin Wall memorial site at Bernauer Straße is the best starting point for a walk along the "Mauerweg" (Wall Walk). Almost all tourist agencies offer walks and tours. If you like, you can also visit historic Wall sites worth seeing on your own, for example Checkpoint Charlie, the world-famous East Side Gallery in Friedrichshain, or the old watch tower at Silesian Gate. You can also take a Wall tour by Trabi. Trabi Safari offers “The Wall Ride,” a convoy of Trabis driving along the former run of the Wall. Trabi XXL even offers stretch limousine-versions of its Trabi cars for its tours. Is it worth purchasing the Berlin Welcome Card? City passes for city tours are trendy. Using them often saves you money when visiting sights. But those cards are not always worth purchasing. The Berlin Welcome Card is one of the cards offered for Berlin. Whether the card is worth purchasing for your trip, you can find out here: The Berlin Welcome Card is a ticket that allows you to use busses, trains (BVG – S-Bahn, subway and street car) for free and provides a 25 to 50 percent admission discount at more than 200 sights, including museums, exhibitions, cultural events, some stores and restaurants.

The Oberharz region offers great adventures for the entire family (djd). The Oberharz tourism region at Brocken mountain features a lot of action: Up in the air on the world’s largest suspension bridge, down into the kingdom of darkness with a flashlight tour through caves, or into wilderness during a survival training class.

Adventurers taking a drop with the doublerope slide across the Bode water reservoir “fly” a distance of a 1,000 meters.

The world’s largest suspension bridge spans the Bode valley, 100 meters above the water reservoir.

Straight down: You lean across the dam of the Wendefurth water reservoir and to look down 43 meters … and continue walking, straight down. When "wall running," participants are safely roped up, determine their own speed and can produce their own action movie with their helmet camera. If that isn’t enough action, you can take a single or tandem 75-meter “Gigaswing” pendulum jump from below the "Titan-RT" suspension bridge. For more information, go to www.harzdrenalin.de. Just like flying: The view from the 120-meter-high start tower above the Rappbode water reservoir is already breath-taking. And then, you just let go! Adventurers ten years and older, can slide through the air on the 1 kilometer-long steel rope of Europe’s largest double-rope-slide "Megazipline." Alone, or parallel with a partner, you are safely attached to the rope. For more information, go to www.harzdrenalin.de. In the kingdom of darkness: The exciting flashlight tour through the Rübeländer stalactite caves is a highlight in the Oberharz region for all kids five-years and older. However, led by experts, it also offers young adults and adults a chance to discover impressive stalactites and cave inhabitants such as bats and olms way down below the earth’s surface. For more information, go to www.harzer-hoehlen.de. Vampires are back: Adults can enjoy an adventurous play in the unique backdrop of the Rübeländer stalactite caves. When attending "Carmilla - Dracula’s Daughter," they get to meet the famous vampire count belowground. A scary atmosphere and goose bumps are guaranteed. If you want to know more, go to www.harzer-hoehlen.de.

Food tastes twice as good when eaten at a self-ignited camp fire.

Survival tours: How do I start a fire without matches? How do I build a shelter from natural materials? How do I survive in the mountains? Young and old adventurers can discover their “wild side” in the wooded Oberharz region when taking survival training classes that ranging from 24 hours to five days. How to correctly grill burgers Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside - that’s how we prefer our burger’s patty. Flavor the hamburger meat with some salt and pepper, knead it and form it into patties. Ideally, they are two centimeters thick and have a diameter of ten centimeters. To make sure the hamburger meat does not fall apart on the grill, put a dent in the center of the patty with your thumb and then put it in the refrigerator. Then it gets hot: Roast or grill the patties at medium heat and turn them only once when the meat can easily be separated from the grill. Cover them and let them sit for

After ten minutes, reduce the oven’s temperature to 350 degrees F (convection oven 310 degrees F) and roast the haxen for about two hours. In between, pour beer or broth on it. There should always be enough liquid in the roasting tray. While the meat is cooking, clean the cabbage, quarter it, cut the leaves in large sections and wash them. Peel the onion and dice it into small pieces. Heat the butter oil in a casserole, add bacon and onion and sauté it. Add the cabbage leaves, lightly sauté and deglaze them with broth. Let it simmer to reduce the liquid. After 45 minutes, add the cream and let it simmer for another ten minutes. Flavor with salt, pepper and a small piece of butter. In the end, flavor the haxen to taste with caraway powder and serve them on top of the cabbage. Pour some gravy on top. Serve with roasted potatoes.
