Odyssey is a bookstore that takes occupants on a voyage to worlds and times beyond, showcasing science fiction concept art through books and exhibitions. Inspired by Light and Space Movement paramount James Turrell and famed Star Wars illustrator Ralph McQuarrie, the space provides a dynamic, unearthly experience that changes to fit the essence of the works it is showcasing. Transparent modular shelves encapsulate visitors as they make their way throughout the undulating pod and explore the unknown.

The central pod that envelopes occupants consists of multiple modular components that interlock in various ways. Variants of the base module are present in the custom arrangement in order to provide structural stability in a formation of this complexity.

Considering previous material explorations of storage systems, the studio was asked to design a bookstore in Austin, TX within a generic strip mall typology, which presented both a design challenge and opportunity. Without context given by highly specific architecture, the active role of interior elements presented potential to activate a previously mundane space. The studio was given discretion on the type of bookstore presented in order to enrich the city and develop a design strategy accordingly. The Austin Forum is the living room of the city; a place that fosters community dialogue. The Forum makes the boundary between the public and civil discourse permeable by providing amenities like a coffee shop and public discussion space, which utilizes conversation pits to eliminate hierarchy and foster open communication from all occupants of the city of Austin. The front desk notifies visitors what topics are being covered in their respective conversation pits and skylights positioned above conversation pits invite participants to debate.

Built in the 1940s, the former Austin Carpenters’ Union building hosts the Austin Forum. Connecting to the site’s history of hosting an association of people with a common purpose, the Austin Forum hosts debate in a democratic, accessible format in the popular Zilker neighborhood. The use of conversation pits within the space respects the building’s mid-century origins and takes inspiration from architect Eero Saarinen.

The Innovative Screen Assembly serves as a flexible, simple, and sustainable partition for a variety of spaces. The partition consists of two elements: recycled plastic electrical caps and biodegradable yarn found in surplus at Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The electrical caps are easily clicked together in groups of four using their grooves. The modules are tied together using yarn and can form assemblies that are held at the top and bottom from tension. Because the electrical caps are not altered, they are able to be reused after the partition is deconstructed, which is simple due to the lack of adhesives. With Payton Russell

The Urban Farm Stand creates a necessary connection between the community and the contemporary urban farm committed to sustainability. Exploring methods of attracting visitors and expanding interest in urban farming, the stand contains a movable, double-layered shelving system which expands into an outdoor display to entice passersby, hearkening to the traditional roadside produce stand. A canopy extends over the roadside face of the stand providing a gathering space next to the point of purchase, which services customers both on the outside and inside of the stand.

The site of the prototype stand is Agua Dulce, an urban farm in Austin, TX. Seeking to expand their interaction with the community, Agua Dulce wanted to create a space that would serve as a place to sell their produce and educate visitors on their sustainable farming practices. Committed to aquaponic and integrated hydroponic methods, Agua Dulce provides Austin with healthy and affordable produce.

Attico, an Italian luxury clothing brand that seeks to create the “penthouse” experience of clothing design, expands their presence to Austin, TX in their first stateside brick and mortar retail space. The interior integrates the brand experience of negligee inspiration and ornate embroidery into the physical space. Inspired by Petra Blaisse’s exploration of curtain design, transparent curtains with vegetal embroidery hang from the ceiling, defining display space and allowing varying intensities and positions of LED lights to cast shadows onto the space.

Starting the design process by exploring the notion of The Sublime, students created dioramas to manifest material explorations of this concept. This diorama investigates the effects produced by light and reflection passing through a permeable screen as well as ornament inspired by plantlife to create an uncanny representation of a common motif. The explorations of The Sublime reach their physical culmination in Attico’s store, which is situated in a storefront space of the historic Starr Building in downtown Austin, TX. The storefront acts as a life-size “diorama”; an opportunity to draw visitors into a physical space.
