COCKTAILS, ANYONE?d W • by Ray Aguilera

Ray Aguilera

hile the Castro has no shortage of bars, lately we’ve earned more of a reputation for bottomless mimosas (and the drunkand-crying over-indulgers they leave scattered across the sidewalk) than for finely-crafted libations. Don’t get me wrong, there will always be a place for the quick and dirty Jack and Coke in this town. But thankfully, for cocktail geeks and other alcohol enthusiasts, there are plenty of careful, handcrafted drinks to be had. On the edge of the Castro, two mixed bars in particular are mixing up amazing artisinal cocktails, with an eye toward innovative ingredients and menus that change with the weather. New kid on the block Churchill (198 Church St. at 14th St.) has taken over the space formerly known as Bar on Church (and The Transfer before that). The former windowless cave has been transformed into something that feels like a modern throwback, evoking the WWII style of the bar’s namesake. You could call Churchill a whiskey bar, as the menu skews heavily toward the dark spirit. It’s well showcased in the Jennie Jerome From Brooklyn, an homage to Winston Churchill’s mother, who hailed from Brooklyn, and was responsible for the invention of the Manhattan cocktail. Churchill’s Brooklyn pairs Bulleit rye with Dolin dry vermouth, Averna, Maraschino, bitters and orange peel. For fans of the Manhattan, this twist on a lost classic manages to feel fresh, and the light herbal sweetness cuts nicely through the rye. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, Churchill’s homegrown Homefront mixes Hangar One vodka, Dolin Blanc, rosemary syrup, and lemon into an amazing concoction that tastes like summer in a glass (or a Mason jar, in this case). Other favorites

include the very retro Bee’s Knees, with gin, honey, and Crème de Violette, or the Piña Colada, which tastes nothing like that sugary coconut thing you had in Key West last summer. Just around the corner at Blackbird (2124 Market Street, between Church & Sanchez), the handwritten cocktail menu features house specialties using top shelf ingredients and lots of house-made infusions and syrups. The cleverly named Tequila Mockingbird is an interesting twist on a standard Margarita, combining adding guava, lime, agave syrup, and bell pepper (really!) alongside the tequila. One sip of the Blackbird version, and you may swear off everyone else’s weaker versions forever. If you’re in the mood for something even more exotic, Blackbird features barrel-aged cocktails, which are exactly what it says on the tin: cocktails aged for four to six weeks in bourbon barrels. While the aging might seem a little gimmicky at first, it definitely imparts a mellowness and complexity to the cocktails that you’ll miss drinking the same thing made straight from the bottle. A recent session of daytime drinking included a Fairbanks (gin, vermouth, Crème de Noyaux-an almond liqueur-and orange) as well as the Apple Cart, an aged blend of Applejack, vermouth, casis, lemon, and lavender. If you’re more of a traditionalist, nothing beats a Martini. And if you’re talking about Martinis, you ought to take a trip down Market Street to Martuni’s (4 Valencia St. at Market St.) the venerable piano bar known for its extra-large, extra-strong cocktails. Stepping into the dimly-lit space is almost like taking a trip back several decades in a time machine—and we mean that in a good way. The candle-lit front room is a good place to meet a friend (or a “friend”),

CURTAIN UP!d I

A DJ spins music at a Berkeley Rep Night/Out party.

Theare Parties go for Gays • by Jim Provenzano t’s pretty much a no-brainer combination; theatre, gays and drinks. Isn’t that just another night out for some of us? Surprisingly, only in the past decade have local theatre companies established ongoing LGBT-specific after-parties. It’s fun and a great way for companies to fill the house on a weeknight (when such events are often held). For patrons, it’s a great way to mingle with a common topic –that evening’s entertainment– to discuss. While enjoying nibbly things and a cocktail, you can eavesdrop on chat between armchair critics and perhaps offer your own opinion. Nothing gets some of us going like talking about the arts over drinks. At Berkeley Repertory’s recent Night/OUT postshow event, gay fans cautiously flocked around the diminutive Rita Moreno, star of her own acclaimed autobiographical show, Life Without Make-up. The iconic actress offered quips and thank yous as others enjoyed food and drinks. “I love theatre, and if there’s family attending, I’m more interested,” said Carnelius Quinn of Oakland. “It’s a more fun experience,” he added, as the DJ began to play grooves at a reasonable sound level. One of Berkeley Rep’s first events was in 2002 for Tony Kushner’s hugely successful Homebody/Kabul, said Terence Keane, Director of Public Relations, adding that each of the post-show parties attracts more than 100 people. “We believe that it helps us reach more people, as we hold the parties early in the run, fill the house, have a fun evening, and that helps 6 BAR★TAB • bartabsf.com • November 2011

build positive word of mouth.” Berkeley Rep also hosts tastings of food by local culinary artisans before most weekend shows. And even when there aren’t parties, Keane mentioned that the concession stand’s custom cocktails and desserts are available at each performance. American Conservatory Theatre celebrated its tenth anniversary of hosting LGBT events with the recent production of Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City, said Evren Odcikin, ACT’s Public Relations Manager “The shows that have LGBT themes (Tales Of The City, Marcus; or The Secret Of Sweet) or artists of interest (Olympia Dukakis for Vigil) end up being very lively, exciting parties,” said Odcikin, adding that such events “are a great way for the theater lovers in the community to make contact with the artists involved in each production and with each other.” At the recent parties for the productions of Clybourne Park and No Exit, Out with A.C.T. parties were some of the most well-attended of the past few years, said Odcikin, adding, “We had to kick people out at the end of the night!” And what would the ballet be without gay fans? Square-dancing. Well, not exactly. But we’ve long been supporters of the terpsichorean arts. Kyra Jablonsky, Associate Director of Public Relations for the San Francisco Ballet, said that the next Nite Out event for their season will be held on January 27, 2012, which is also opening night. “Nite Out has been happening since 2004 with

DJ Guy Ruben is ubiquitous to the local scene (Outlook, 440, Truck, etc.). NIGHT BITESd Clubs, Sandwiches and More • by Ronn Vigh

Hearty meals rock at Slim’s. Jim Provenzano

bout halfway through an evening of San Francisco clubbing and bar-hopping, the need for two things often emerges: a trip to the ATM and food. While many bars do tend to dress a dimly lit corner with a money machine, finding food in a club environment isn’t so easy. While stopping to provide your body with more substantial fare might sound less fun than nourishing it with repeated rounds of beers and shots, I’ve explored establishments that offer the best of both worlds, all in one place. A neon sign, an entrance to a long, descending staircase and, during business hours, a flood of mostly skinny jeans-clad twentysomethings flooding the Market Street sidewalk for a smoke are Café Du Nord’s most identifiable features. Besides the long bar and nightly bands, the quaint underground pub boasts a dining menu for those who want to partake in dinner and a show. From Personal Pizzas to Pot Roast to Porcini Mushroom Ravioli, Café Du Nord has a variety of options for both meat lovers and vegetarians, and serves dinner 30 minutes after doors open. (2170 Market St. 861-5016. www.cafedunord.com) Café Du Nord isn’t the only live music venue that boasts a full dinner menu. Slim’s, the sturdy, American-roots music mainstay on 11th Street, regularly offers a bar food-heavy selection, including Bacon-Cheddar Potato Skins, Quesadillas and Veggie Corn Dogs. They also serve more complete dinner choices that vary from night to night, and include salad, seasonal vegetables, a starch and dessert. (333 11th St. 255-0333. www.slims-sf.com) 10 BAR★TAB • bartabsf.com • November 2011

Just down the street from Slim’s, DNA Lounge feeds hungry bar patrons even when the bar is closed—the attached DNA Pizza is open 24 hours. The choices go far beyond pizza, from sandwiches and salads to a full coffee bar. There are plenty of choices for pizza by the “splice,” as they say, with a special offering each day. The night I stopped by, the “splice of the day” was the Cheeseburger, whose official (laminated!) ingredient card lists cheddar, provolone, ground beef, bacon, red onion… and more bacon! Splice it any way you want it, there’s something for everyone here, no matter what time it is. (371 11th St. 626-0166. www.DNApizza.com) Over in the Tenderloin, it’s not uncommon to hear its denizens singing off-key renditions of show tunes to make a quick buck or two—but knowing there’s a full menu at The Great American Music Hall is music to my ears. On weekends, restaurants can entail lengthy waits that you just can’t afford when rushing to eat before a show—but The Great American Music Hall offers dining options to all patrons, with items such as “The After-School Special,” a combo of Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup; Pulled Pork Sandwiches; and Music Hall Tri-Colored Nachos. There is also a separate dinner menu, available to dinner ticket-holders only. (859 O’Farrell St. 885-0750. www.gamh.com) One of my newest discoveries is a venue that’s not new at all. The stylish yet informal Olive on Larkin Street is a comfortable, narrow lounge with an eager, friendly staff, serving a full menu of cocktails and nibbles. My favorite type of establishment is one where you can feel free to just
