ow does a gay bar remain successful through the years? The Stud’s two coowners talked about their lengthy history managing one of the nation’s oldest gay bars, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary this month. The Stud Bar opened in 1966 as the early gay and hippie movements in San Francisco culture took hold. Originally a leather bar with a psychedelic Chuck Arnett wall mural, although it moved in 1987 (from the venue now known as Holy Cow), its current space, formerly The Arena, is also historic, having hosted the first Bare Chest Calendar contests in 1984. Ben Guibord, a current co-owner, has been working at The Stud since 1977, “almost 35 years, which are the best years of my life; almost half my life, actually,” he said. Guibord started from the ground up, literally. “I started by sweeping the floors,” he said. “Owner Jim Fleckstein was new, too. Both of us learned the business together.” Guibord became secretary of the corporation, and has also been a DJ. The 1987 move from the Folsom St. address stemmed from the landlord demanding a percentage of the bar’s income. When Fleckstein died and his estate was finalized, The Stud bought itself back from Fleckstein’s heirs a few times. Guibord has been the co-owner for two of those transactions, since 1977. The Stud team decided to find a new home, and considered venues where the Ambush had been (across the street from the Lone Star), as well as the current location of Slim’s on 11th Street. After moving to its current location on the corner of Harrison and 9th streets, Guibord said June 16 became the bar’s anniversary. Like Guibord, Michael McElheny started doing

basic work, later becoming a co-owner in 1996. Guibord said, “We were just happy to get our paycheck, to own our jobs. Michael and I aren’t about making a huge profit. With current times, we’re very fortunate to own our jobs.” How is it that The Stud, unlike so many other bars, has lasted 45 years? “Stick with it!” said Guibord. “If you believe in it.” For McElhaney, co-owning a bar was an adventure after moving to San Francisco from Hawaii in 1989. He still lives there part time. “I was super naïve and I was only 28 when I’d bought into the Stud,” said McElhaney. Starting as a cashier in 1991, and then a doorman, McElhaney was dating the manager at the time, and “in a fit of nepotism, he gave me his job,” he said. “I was thrown into bartending.” Before they undertook managing the bar, which went into probate, “A whole group of people bought it and kind of annihilated it,” said McElhaney. “It made me sad to see that. So I asked one of the owners if he’d like to sell it. He made an offer, and we took it. We were like, ‘Let’s do this. Let’s have fun!’ Fresh out of art school, the charismatic McElhaney landed a large bank loan and started improving the space. “The previous owners had stripped the place,” he said. “They left one disco ball and one pin spot.” After its first four years, under their ownership, the bar’s debts were paid off. Serendipity, and a lot of hard work, played a role in the bar’s resurgence. “Ben and I both have June 24 birthdays, which is also near the bar’s anniversary,” said McElhaney. “When we took legal ownership, it was also on our birthdays, too.” The bar’s most famous weekly night, Trannyshack, began as Singing for Suppers, a fundraiser for food programs for AIDS/HIV patients, which McElhaney

he bar may be closed, but The Eagle’s far from dead: it lives on in the memories of the thousands who have passed through its

doors. For decades, San Francisco’s LGBTs have been building a sort of mental scrapbook of The Eagle, one concert, fundraiser, and cracked peanut at a time. And now, with the business shuttered, it’s a fine time to look back over the past three decades, and maybe even farther back still. You can’t talk about local leather without talking about the role that The Eagle played in keeping the scene alive. It’s where San Francisco’s current reigning Grand Duke, Jason Husted, first met Daddy Ray Tilton and Mama Sandy Reinhardt. And it’s where he met his partner, Christopher Humphreys, whom you can see on the August page of 2012’s Bare Chest Calendar. Everyone has a favorite memory of the place. “Before I was employed there, I used to go to Sunday beer busts, just to rubberneck at the massive crowd of gay men,” recalled former manager Doug Hilsinger. “I remember kissing my wonderful husband at the Eagle,” said Christian Calson. “We were all dressed in leather and from out of town. It was wonderful. One of my favorite SF experiences.” “My first memory [of the bar] ... was a long time ago,” said Robert Ein. “AIDS was destroying our community by then, and I had a sense of camaraderie. I enjoyed the leather scene and I felt like I belonged here.” “I arrived in San Francisco in 1989, and The Eagle was one of the first bars I visited,” Dolph Pun told us. “I went to a Sunday beer bust and was amazed that there were that many gay people in one place.”

“I started going to The Eagle back in 1993,” recalled Will Brunner. “I was just getting into the leather scene and that’s where I started. It had a dress code at that time, and man, what a crowd. ... I used to bootblack there, so I was there most every Sunday for the past four or five years.” Brunner’s favorite Eagle memory: winning the title SF Leather Daddy’s Boy XX. “Frankly, most of my memories are a happy blur,” Demetri Moshoyannis, Executive Director of Folsom Street Events, told BARtab. “Most of the time, I can hold my liquor pretty well, but the only times I’ve ever blacked out were on the patio at The Eagle. ... I’m sure I did some really naughty things. Honestly, I think I just made out with lots of hot guys whom I can’t remember now.” Many Eagle patrons reserve their fondest memories for the concerts. “My most memorable performance at the Eagle was when Connie Francis sang ‘Where the Boys Are’ at a Sunday beer bust/ fundraiser, back in the days when the bar was known as the SF Eagle,” said Paul Jorgenson. And Doug Hilsinger listed off a who’s-who of some of the most memorable acts: Zen Guerrilla, Extra Action Marching Band, OXBOW, a BomB reunion at which the PA kept failing, Cinnamon Girls, Pansy Division, The Freedom Rockers every New Year’s Eve, Thee OhSees, The Quails, Grant Hart, High On Fire, StarFucker, OFF!, and all the annual Mission Creek Music Festival shows. Aside from the music, another big part of The Eagle experience was the decor. Doug Hilsinger’s favorite items were a motorcycle doing a wheelie across the back wall, the metal candle sconces, the wooden cutout of the NYC MineShaft guy, and the autumnal lights and leaves up over the bar through autumn.

“I love the fire pit at night on a weeknight,” said Christian Calson, still not used to talking about the bar in past tense. “You can just forget you’re in a crowded city and feel like you’re at home.” Dolph Pun misses the “fresh candy” machine. “The machine never worked, but we used it as a candy dish all the time,” he said. “People would bring in bags of candy.” And Gerardo Manzo’s favorite decoration: a small sign above the DJ booth door that read, “no room for racism.” So is this the end of the line for The Eagle? Maybe not. History buffs like Robert Ein are digging deep into the archives on the sixth floor of the Public

Library, scouring old maps and microfiche to determine whether the building could be declared a historic landmark. So far, some tantalizing clues have popped up. One map yielded a landlord’s name: Dan Gallagher, owner of a teaming (horses) and mercantile establishment. “It looks like it may have been a major travel hub for horses,” Ein said. A water record from 1888 shows more hints that it was, at some point, a saloon, a foundry, and a stable. And then there’s the slight offset between the building and the stage, hinting that portions of the property were built prior to the modern street grid.

All Dancing! All Dead! Backed by the Tom Shaw Trio, Martin appears on Monday, June 20 at 8pm, performing as Bette, Judy, Kate and other Hollywood royalty in tribute to their careers and the gay audiences that have kept their memories alive and well. So far, it’s all speculation. But investigators are hot on the trail of a Holy Grail: a painting rumored to exist, created sometime in the 1800s and depicting a barn that might, over the years, have become The Eagle. “If we can find that painting, it would be a very important piece for the Historic Preservation Commission to consider,” Ein said. “I’m still hoping
