Sound Off d Hunter Valentine to Rock the Regency by Heather Cassell
L
esbian punk rock band Hunter Valentine and the stars of Showtime’s season three of The Real L Word will rock San Francisco this month with Canadian punk band Sum 41 January 12 at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. “I love coming to San Francisco,” said frontwoman Kiyomi McCloskey, who has lost count of the number of times Hunter Valentine has performed in the city. “The people are great. It is beautiful there. The food is amazing.” With bassist Veronica Sanchez and drummer Laura Petracca, it’s just the beginning of the band’s U.S. tour promoting their most recent album, Collide and Conquer. The band has already blown through 70 cities in Canada and Japan in recent months, said McCloskey. The album is filled with edgy guitar riffs and vocals that show off McCloskey’s alto, which shifts from hard and pointed in-your-face Joan Jettstylings to deep soul-searching that sometimes echoes Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde. “I really like loud rock and roll, and that’s the way I see myself playing music for the rest of my life,” said McCloskey, a 27-year-old McClosky. But her acoustic days still show up in some of the album’s ballads. The burning “Liar, Liar,” the first single on the album, has been heating up the airwaves across the U.S., and the accompanying video has been accepted as The Freshman on the show MTV U. Created with famed Canadian producer and Treble Charger frontman Greig Nori, Collide 4 BARHTAB • bartabsf.com • January 2013
and Conquer diverges from the band’s previous albums Hunter Valentine EP in 2005, The Impatient Romantic in 2007 and Lessons from the Late Night in 2010. The notes and depth of sound on this album are fitting with the complexity of the hard songs that expose the rawness of broken hearts and deception to softer ballads about transformations and self-discovery. Edgy songs, such as “Liar Liar,” “Pulse,” “Little Curse (shit happens),” and ballads, such as “Lonely Crusade” and “Crying” are grabbing music lovers’ attention, propelling the band into a broader spotlight. It doesn’t hurt that the band has been followed around by The Real L Word, which catapulted the three rockers into a new realm and gave an inside look into the life of women musicians. The band doesn’t know if they will be back for the fourth season of The Real L Word, according to their spokeswoman Mona Elyafi. Music captured McCloskey’s heart at the tender age of 12 when she first picked up a guitar, but it was a rocky start that has only gotten sweeter with time. She nearly didn’t follow a music career. Due to a strict instructor, “a love for music didn’t click at that point,” in spite of having a “really high respect for it,” she said. A year later, her passion for rock n’ roll took hold under a more creative and supportive guitarist and songwriter who gave her the support and guidance she needed to envision her musical path. She became “obsessed with song-writing,” said the Toronto, Canada native,
road sometimes,” said McCloskey. “It’s hard to be away from your family. It’s hard to be away from your partner. Basically, my bandmates keep me grounded and focused.”

who a decade later is a music maker. McCloskey, who resides in Brooklyn, New York, was a solo acoustic artist until a chance meeting with Petracca at a crowded bar eight years ago. The duo bonded over cheap beer and rail whiskey and formed Hunter Valentine. They began charting their course through the music industry, slowly evolving and maturing for nearly a decade as they put the pieces together, finding the right band mates and record labels. During that time they produced three studio albums, performed more than 200 gigs a year on tours through Canada, parts of Europe, the U.K. and the U.S., and worked with two different labels before signing with Megaforce Records this past summer. “I’ve always wanted to have a band,” said McCloskey, who attempted starting two bands (Trash Before Class and Dirty Remedy) before Hunter Valentine. “I still play shows on my own just to keep my chops up as an acoustic player, but I love playing with the band. It just takes it to the next level of sound.” Her band mates also help her keep the rock n’ roll lifestyle real. She credits them for keeping her grounded during long periods of time away from home and loved ones. “It’s hard to be on the

drank a little too much through the course of her evening. “Eventually, the woman went from zero to obliterated in about five seconds and passed out on her boyfriend. I dropped the check, telling the guy that he had to get her out of there. At that moment, Sleeping Beauty decided to wake up, look me dead in the eye, say ‘I’m sorry.’ She then threw up all over the table.” Of course, Justin was the one who had to clean everything up, but he says while he was gagging, that wasn’t what bothered him the most. “I’m the oldest of four. It takes more than that to fully gross me out. What bothered me the most was that the cheap fuck left such a piss poor tip; ten percent!” Clearly, it was not a good night for anybody involved. Yours truly once had a date with someone who couldn’t hold their booze in, either. Well, it wasn’t a date as much as a dance floor meeting turned cab ride back to his place in the Bayview. I was new to the city, didn’t know many people and certainly didn’t know where the Bayview was. It was so long ago that there was no Grindr, (gasp!) no Adam4Adam, no Iphone maps. All I had was Badlands and my bad decisions. After our cab ride to the unknown, I found myself on a dark street, entering a narrow loft apartment and my ‘date’ running straight to the bathroom where he proceeded to throw up. Not sure where I was or what to do, I was about to

he New Year often starts with a handful of resolutions which we seldom keep. And, with the company I keep, the resolutions I hear pour forward usually involve less drinking, less partying, less late nights, less indulgence and all those wonderful things that are so easy to do in the Castro and surrounding areas. Most “worst night ever” experiences seem to have roots in the Castro. Justin O’Neil, a long time Cheer SF member and aspiring stand up comedian, was poised to celebrate his 30th birthday party starting at Trigger. O’Neil, who is proudly clean and sober now, is one of the few who are not shy about their past. “I got filthy drunk the night before, made some bad decisions and wound up getting high on drugs, went to two all-night sex parties and took Viagra, which I had an allergic reaction to,” explains O’Neil. With “allergic reaction” in tow, i.e. a neverending boner in his pants, O’Neil continued on to his birthday gathering at Trigger and a slew of neighborhood venues, where neither the partying with his friends nor the party in his pants would let up anytime soon. “I ultimately blacked out, woke up with a stranger in my bed and still high, and still with a boner,” exclaims O’Neil. “I had to go to the hospital to have my dick drained and face the worst humiliation of my life.” Justin is also a veteran of the restaurant and bar business and recalls a recent customer who

exit before he came out and tried to make out with me. While I was honored that someone was that into me, I didn’t have to do much to decline his stinky-mouthed invitation to tonsil-box, as he soon ran back to the bathroom to spew once more. Here’s the problem, I hop into a cab, flee the unfamiliar territory, arrive curbside at my apartment and dig into my pocket to determine that my wallet and keys were sitting on his couch. A gentleman who would like to be referred to as “Ed” once spent New Years morning navigating the streets of San Francisco in what may have

There are the perks when she gets to share her adventures with her family. During the band’s Japan tour, McCloskey, who is one-quarter Japanese, was joined by her father at the end of the tour. It was the first time the two had been to Japan, in spite of their Japanese heritage. “It was a really cool experience,” said McCloskey, a foodie who enjoys exploring the culinary scene in the places she visits. In the end, it’s the fans that inspire her to keep her wheels on the road and performing. “Every 8 BARHTAB • bartabsf.com • January 2013
looked like a Baby New Year costume. After some time in the Castro, Ed decided to hit up a South of Market club where the dress code is no dress at all. After an evening of partying and letting loose, when Ed returned to his locker, he painfully realizes that his clothes and belongings were not there. “I left in the few white towels they could spare, walking home in the rain at four in the morning.” Having your belongings stolen and traipsing through your neighborhood practically naked is certainly embarrassing, but even more so with this admission from Ed: “I had mistakenly put my clothes in another locker and took the wrong key. They were there the whole time!” Let’s face it. At some point, We’ve all indulged a little more then we should have and chances are it will happen again. If you’ve taken anything away from this article, it should be that we’re all the same. We all get in a little over our heads every once in a while and there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Oh, and if you ever strip naked and put your clothes in a locker somewhere, you should most definitely write the locker number on your hand. ✸
time when you get to a new city where people are waiting to see you play music, that really makes me want to keep going,” said McCloskey. “It’s just a really thrilling feeling. I feel very grateful for that privilege.” Bay Area fans that miss Hunter Valentine’s San Francisco appearance can catch them on Jan. 15 at Ace of Spades in Sacramento and Jan. 16 at the Knitting Factory Concert House in Reno, Nev. All shows begin at 8 p.m. ✸ For more information about Hunter Valentine, visit www.huntervalentine.com.

fter locking the Leatherneck Bar I hopped in my pickup and headed for the Gay Community Center at 330 Grove Street, behind the Civic Center. I squeezed into an illegal parking spot, adjusted my chaps, and entered the neo-Spanish Colonial building, long since demolished. Nobody asked for my boarding pass. Night Flight 1977, considered the world’s first gay circuit party, was already launched. Manhattanite Michael Maletta’s production was the first Circuit Party on the West Coast. Sheets of white woven nylon that had once hung on Christo’s Running Fence now hung in an aging industrial building like clouds in a night sky. I undid another button on my 501s. “Think that’s gonna help?” A familiar voice said. “There’s always hope,” I turned to see my pal

Paul. “Wait till you see this.” He led me toward a huge room filled with dancing men. I grabbed a beer from a nearby ice pool and was nearly sucked into the crowd as a scaffold-tower rolled onto the floor. Atop the tower a slide-jockey manipulated six projectors casting multiple images onto screens around the room. “You like?” Paul said. “I like!” “Steve and I put the slides together from Wake’s collection.” I stood mesmerized by the slides, the light beams, all flashing on Christo’s panels. I grabbed another beer. Paul had melded into the crowd of thousands. On the upper floor, a platform provided a stage for acts reminiscent of medieval fairs. Jugglers, slight-of-hand artists, wrestlers, jesters, and shape-shifters of all types played to the crowd. Fuck film booths and pinball machines were everywhere. At one machine, two players, each with one hand, tried to keep the ball in play with the flippers, while they used their other hand to fist or fondle. The contortion exhibitionists held this voyeur’s attention until a red light beckoned me to an unlit room. Anonymous groping hands ushered me in. I emerged satiated. My buddy Allan had replaced the duo at the pinball machine.
“Get your knob polished?” Allan said, with his knowing cowboy grin. I grinned back. He offered me a toot from his plastic bullet. “I just might try that myself,” he said, and disappeared into the dark room behind the red light. Back at the dance floor a tightrope walker crossed a cable over the heads of nearly naked men who sniffed poppers and merged into a mass of sweaty bodies on drugs of choice. I reached for another beer from the ice pool. “Aren’t you glad I talked you into moving to San Francisco?” I recognized Jack’s voice instantly. Before I could answer we were engulfed by whirling dervishes sucking on Popsicles tossed from the scaffold-tower. Night Flight boogied on, refusing to climax
until well into the first day of the new year. Historian Jack Fritscher preserves Night Flight in Gay San Francisco: Eyewitness Drummer. In his contemporary 1978 Drummer article Fritscher tagged it “The bitch-and-bull mating of New York energy with San Francisco attitude…” that … “strengthen[ed] the solidarity of the gay political front.” If such things exist, Night Flight was gay San Francisco’s “Spirit of Place” and “Spirit of Time.” Gay community businesses helped sponsor Night Flight. Proceeds from the revelry went to the Pride Foundation. Little did we know, as we danced past dawn, the importance gay cooperation and solidarity would have just down the road and around the corner. ✸
