Russian River’s Relaxing R&R • by Ronn Vigh

ost San Franciscans react to the idea of traveling outside the city as if they were just asked to join a friend for an impromptu dinner in Texas. Fog city may encapsulate all we need for an evening of dining, drinking and entertainment. However, if you’re looking for a lazy weekend with some specks of city flavor, perhaps a car ride north to the Russian River Valley can give you the “R & R” you desire without feeling too far from your city roots. Guerneville, nestled approximately 19 miles west off of Route 101, is a quaint, LGBT-friendly community of roughly 4,500 people, which swells considerably in the summer months. With a downtown Main Street that disappears into the stretch of forest just as quickly as it appeared, Guerneville marries the classic idea of country living with a few specks (but, just specks) of big city flair. While many businesses have changed hands and names over the years, we find Guerneville rich with history and a community proud to be who and where they are. For a small town nestled in the woods, Guerneville is highly progressive and home to many LGBT-friendly businesses and vacationers. The Rainbow Cattle Company is a local gay bar that has stood the test of time (16220 Main St. (707) 869-0206. www.queersteer.com). Rob Giljum is one of the current owners of the bar where the rustic interior paneling has soaked up over 30 years 4 BAR★TAB • bartabsf.com • July 2012

of spilled cocktails, laughter and heavy cruising. Rob is particularly enthusiastic about the bar’s ‘Giveback Tuesdays.’ “We realize we are a member of this community, and try to give back to it as well,” notes Giljum. “We hold functions every Tuesday where ten percent of our sales are donated to a charity.” The bar is open 365 days a week, whether it be tourist season or not. “It’s a wonderfully open and accepting community up here,” he adds. “Plus the setting on the River surrounded by the hills makes it picturesque.” Simone Campbell, a San Francisco based performer, enjoys the escape up North. “I love the Russian River area up in Guerneville,” says Campbell. “And as someone who is not fond of hot weather and nature, that says a lot!” While the weather is a draw for some, it’s specialty events and weekends that pull other vacationers to Guerneville. As a part of the popular annual Women’s Weekend, Simone hosted an event called “Dragstraveganza” at The River Theater –as well as judging a wet t-shirt contest– proof that the little community doesn’t shutter at sundown as small towns often do (16135 Main St. (707) 869-8022. www.russianrivertheater.com). Simone calls the weekend the best mix of organized chaos she has ever experienced, and found herself enamored with The River Theatre, where some of those events took place. “You can really feel the history in the space that is littered with stage design of shows and way-gay parties of years past.” The venue, now known as Jerry Knight’s Historic

River Theater, was established in 1947 as a movie theater, but has enjoyed various historical uses such as burlesque, comedy and music through the years, even seeing appearances by The Jerry Garcia Band, Buddy Holly and a pregnant EmmyLou Harris. Today the venue offers a variety of bands and parties and will host events for the annual Lazy Bear Weekend, August 1-6. Yes, it’s back! The organizers of the popular weekend will host a whole herd of parties and events. Advance Bear Tags are $105. For info on the hirsute happenings, visit www.lazybearweekend.com While that weekend will be joyfully crowded, and summer is always busy, you can find a place to stay in Guerneville or nearby Monte Rio. For accommodations, several options range from totally rustic (campground rentals for those who prefer the romantic intimacy of a tent) to luxury-rustic (rooms that include a view, a kitchen, even a fireplace). The Woods offers this entire range, from cozy cabins starting at $95 a night, to the spacious penthouse suite, which goes for $295-$335, with a four-night minimum. The best part for guests? Perhaps it’s the convenient location to the river, and their clean big clothing-optional swimming pool, surrounded by colorful floral displays. If summer’s too busy for you, consider an autumn trip, where the local foliage transforms into a riot of warm colors. (16484 4th St., Guerneville. (877) 887-9218. www.rrwoods.com) Just a block down from Main Street lies the revamped R3 Hotel, which many remember as the Russian River Resort or The Triple R. The resort has been a fixture of the community for years. Whether remembered for their outdoor patio and pool parties in the summer heat or for a questionable hot tub which might be better identified as Egg Drop Soup after a long evening of use, it remains a popular destination. (16390 4th St. (707) 869-8399. www.ther3hotel.com) “I performed comedy there one time and afterward they let us use the facilities, including the hot tub,” says comedienne Susan Maletta. “That hot tub apparently had seen a lot of action, because I

The Rainbow Cattle Company

woke up in the morning and I was pregnant!” Clearly a joke (we hope), that is the legacy that lives on at R3, which has reopened after a few shuttered years. R3 is ready to party again and new weekly events include Shiny Disco Balls, a Saturday night dance party, as well as Hey, Gurl Hey on Thursdays, and Karaoke every Sunday. The resort still boasts a full bar, pool, sun deck, restaurant, piano bar and hotel as well. If you think the R3 Hotel sounds like it could lead to an evening of debauchery, who knows what might happen at the Naughty Pines, a 15-acre private men’s retreat nestled in the hills above Guerneville. There are cabin and tent rentals available ($40-$75 a

That could definitely be a o most memorable experience! www.naughtypines.com m Nearby Monte Rio is equally scenic, and a little off the main drag. For another riverside view, the o ggay-owned Rio Villa offers all the conveniences of a hotel with the rustic flair of the area. It’s also o ssecluded and surrounded by lush forests. I m was a newbie comedian at the time, and was pretty w much booed off the stage at the Triple R, but not m without being heckled first. A (drunken) man at the w bar yelled, “What room are you in, boy? Because I b aam a chickenhawk!” With nearby hiking trails, campgrounds, wineries aand plenty of quaint restaurants with down-home menus, you can keep busy while relaxing. So, m whether you’re a bear, bear-chaser, fair or fowl, you’ll w find plenty of wildlife where the River runs. ✸

ark Twain, brilliant as he was, probably didn’t consider the prospect of global warming when he opined about spending his coldest winter day one summer in San Francisco. We have our share of out-of-season brisk and foggy days. Heck, we don’t even have normal seasons. Outdoor and daytime nightlife can be fun, especially when you can get a bit wet. This brought up the question; where can a queen enjoy a poolside cocktail? The easiest route? Get a room. Numerous hotels include indoor and outdoor pools. Treat yourself like a tourist and enjoy the many accommodations. You can also attend one of the many (mostly straight) parties held at the renovated Phoenix Hotel. Juanita More has held annual Pride parties there. This year, due possibly to the event’s sheer popularity, she doubled her efforts and moved them elsewhere. Unfortunately, that venue’s management noted that photo shoots at their quaint little pool required lengthy advance legal permissions from the artist who added those, uh, creative swipes of color on the pool. So, you’ll not see any photos of that ‘work of art’ here. 2010’s Utopia party, held at a South San Francisco pool, was quite a hoot. It’s too bad it’s not become an annual event.

Fortunately, the friendly staff as Casa Dolores apartments (240 Dolores St.) let prolific photographer Steven Underhill captures cutie-pie models Kareem and Frank (a friendly staffer at The EndUp, by the way), as they donned skimpy swimwear and cavorted in the apartment complex’s lovely pool. But if you’re not planning on renting, where can you go to get wet and wild? Several gay and very gayfriendly hotels, resorts and bed and breakfasts in the Russian River are only a short drive away. Check out our feature article “Into the Woods,” for a summer full of fun opportunities. If you’re headed to San Jose, The Watergarden offers a clean outdoor pool that’s not only clothing optional, it’s a sex-happy cruisefest for men 18 and over; check out the special events on their website. 1010 The Alameda, San Jose. (408) 275-1215. www.thewatergarden.com For pool of a completely different kind, stop by Kok Bar (1225 Folsom St.) and other taverns that feature pool tables. It’s cool, dark and sometimes cruisy. Until then, perhaps you’d like to smuggle a flask on a seaside hike, park yourself along the coast for a view of the ruins of the Sutro Baths, and pine for the days when bartenders and poolboys offered dual service. ✸

TAKE ME TO THE RIVERd • by Dr. Jack Fritscher

P

roud Mary, Rollin’ on the River! Grittier than the Catskills, Guerneville is a Dirty Dancing resort where nobody puts Baby in the corner. Prehistoric two-spirit Pomo Indians, queer Russian trappers (1812), and bachelor California loggers (1840) had no idea the Big Bottom settlement would become Stumptown and be renamed Guerneville after sawmill owner George Guerne, who clear-cut redwoods to build houses in San Francisco. Locals laugh at tourists saying “Gur-nee-ville” the way San Franciscans freak at “Frisco.” Thank the Rainbow Gods, “Gurn-ville” is not the Pines, South Beach, or Palm Springs with their status codes. Diversely eclectic, Guerneville is San Francisco’s backyard playground on the fabled Russian River where generations of GLBTs have retreated like Thoreau at Walden Pond to vacation, party, recover, and then retire in woodsy homes near world-famous wineries, while remaining part of the City, ninety-six minutes away. The 99% need never mind the 1% herd of white male Republican elephants wallowing every summer at Bohemian Grove in nearby Monte Rio. More truly “bohemian,” Guerneville, like the Cannes of film festivals, has beauties sun-broiling on its croisette beach, Lazy Bear poolside weekends in its B&Bs, and leatherfolk and discomaniacs remembering its historic bars: Russian River Eagle, Drums, Mineshaft, Highlands disco, and down River Road, near the legendary nude cruising at Wohler Bridge, The Rusty Nail. Long before Philadelphian Peter Pender pondered purchasing posh property to found Fife’s (1977), gays, hippies, pagans, straight red necks, and vegetarians (if pot is a veggie) perfected the un-gentrified good life of River Rats. Conjugating DNA ancestry, Pender’s “Fifi’s” was a Polkstrasse cocktail lounge. The Woods, featuring Charles Pierce, Sylvester and Sharon McKnight, was a cloned Trocadero. Molly Brown’s was the plaid-shirt Ambush, and The Rainbow Cattle Company (1979), owned by a former LAPD cop, spun like a Folsom bar

out of the original RCC (1977) on Valencia at DuBoce. The Rusty Nail was a lesbian bar originally frequented by SoMa men, including Leatherneck bar owner Allan Lowery. It was owned by three ladies, including the sporty Pat Conway, whose home in the canyon behind the Nail hosted invitation-only pennyante poker, pool tables, potluck parties, and a hot tub for twelve back when the orgiastic 1970s was a 24/7 cabaret, ole chum! Eyewitness history is local color. In his book Folsom Street Blues (2011), SoMa author Jim Stewart makes beach-read comedy of boozy, cruisy, cokedup Guerneville in “Up at the River.” He recorded this exchange around the Nail pool table: “I’m the token straight guy here.” “I’m the token transsexual. Let’s go to your place and token fuck.” I’ve experienced Russian River culture since 1961 when my Uncle Henry, who danced to big bands at River venues during WWII, introduced me to Buck’s Bar (1896) and the mystique of Guerneville. Since the 1890s, San Francisco’s faster guys and gals, as well as same-sex jitterbugging soldiers and sailors, arrived by ferry and a long-gone railroad. That transportation will be restored hopefully in 2015, with a new Smart Train, giving city queers easier access by ferry and rail to the gay summer place where the girls and the boys are. ✸ Excerpted from Gay San Francisco.
