Women’s Events Pride-wide by Jim Provenzano

his year’s Pride events enjoy the fourth incarnation of the multi-event Eden in the Bay production team. With pop stars, ‘celesbian’ chefs and dance parties each day and night of the weekend, women’s events in San Francisco have taken a step up. Christine De La Rosa (aka Miz Chris) noted the growth of the events she’s organized three previous Pride weekends. “Our first year we had about 2,500 women for evening events,” said De La Rosa. “The second year, that more than doubled. This year, we expect a lot more women, so we’re offering a variety of different events.” Not that wild grooving dance parties aren’t popular. “But we learned not everyone wants to go out late,” she said. “So we added comedy shows and food events. For people who want variety, we have that, too.” But the most popular events remain the dance parties. And according to De La Rosa, “These girls are crazy. We sell out of bottle service every year, in advance. People have offered me extra money to let them in, but we can’t.” Previous events have been held at Supperclub, The Factory and other local nightclubs. “Any event we had, in the past two years, we sell out. We have to turn people away at the venue.”

To adjust to the growing demand for Eden events, the (comparatively) smaller Supperclub will be used Thursday night, June 27. The more intimate ambiance will serve as more of a warmup, De La Rosa said, “because some people have to work on Friday.” Friday June 28, at The Factory will attract more than 2000 women, and the Saturday night event at warehouse club Mezzanine is “almost always a sell out.” The events draw a “surprisingly younger crowd,” said De La Rosa. “We have a large local scene, but it’s also become a large national event, with people coming from all over the world to San Francisco, and a lot of people who don’t have this anywhere else.” While many women tourists now know of the Eden events, when De La Rosa was visiting only half a dozen years ago, she said, “I didn’t know where the party was.” That inspired her to create one. “You need to take people through the weekend and let them know where your people are.” Although she’s happy with the event’s success, she said it’s nothing like she predicted. “The first year, I told my partners, ‘If we get 500 women, I’ll be happy.’ We were overwhelmed.” Other upcoming events include their July 15 parties in Sacramento, and San Jose Pride in August. Their expanded tour will soon include events in the Pacific Northwest. “They want our DJs and performers,” said De La Rosa. “We’re so lucky to have a plethora of talent at our fingertips. I truck in people from the Bay. We want to hire people who are local, when we travel. And they want our type of parties and music. We’re creating these events from the ground up.” And like any beautiful garden, Eden has sprung from some very fruitful ground.

Garden Fresh This year, 100 percent of the proceeds from all ten of its celesbian-spangled events goes to the new Eden LGBTQ Youth Foundation. California’s finest female DJs will tear up the turntables at Eden’s five dance parties, including Angie Vee, Lady Fingaz, Fusion, Lezlee, LP, Motive, Ry Toast, Ryan, ThatGirl, Trinity, and Val G. Pop singer Eve will headline several events, and celesbian Chef Khristianne Uy, better known as Chef K, will also raise money for the foundation. Chef K, winner of the ABC Season 1 The Taste, and the first lesbian to be matched by Bravo’s Millionaire Matchmaker, will host the Chef K Foodie Brunch on Friday, June 28, 11am to 3pm at Bisou Bistro in the Castro. “I couldn’t be more ecstatic,” said Chef K about hosting the brunch and raising money to support LGBTQ youth. “I’m actually doing something I love and helping a cause that I support.” “We were thrilled when Chef K agreed to be one of our celesbians for the weekend,” said De La Rosa. The celebrity chef will be helping Eden help LGBTQ youth. Bay Area lesbian fashion designers will show their style at the second annual Eden Fashion Event on Thursday night, June 27. Alyah Baker, style director of Eden Pride Events and co-owner of Show & Tell, said this year’s designers are a mix of homegrown nationally-known brands as well as some “budding new talents.” Hosting the fashion show is AzMarie, Next Top Model contestant and L.A.’s latest genderbending fashion model and performance artist. On Friday night, world-renowned lesbian comedians Gina Yashere and Dana Goldberg will have the women laughing at Brava Theater. “I am super excited to have both Gina and Dana this year at the Eden Comedy Show,” said De La Rosa. “Both of these fantastic comedians performed at our inaugural Eden weekend in 2010, and this is their first time back for this event.” Rose Garcia, star of The Real L Word’s first season, is now the co-host of The Romi and Rose Show. She’ll again host Eden events. “I love Christine’s passion for bringing such a large event for the women of our community during the biggest Pride event in the country! It’s an honor to be a part of it,” said Garcia. Also hosting the weekend are the Bay Area’s Aima the Dreamer, spoken word artist Mona Webb, Jazzifer “Jazzy” Miller, Kayko Tamaki and Shanna Holmes. Participation takes on full swing as Eden will also march up Market Street for the first time in Sunday’s Pride Parade with the Eden LGBTQ Youth Foundation float. Volunteers are being accepted.

HARMONIC HUNKS by Jim Provenzano
Jeb Havens at 2012’s Folsom Street Fair
T
he divisive politics of Pride may still be squawking by the end of the month, but some voices will remain beautiful and honest despite it all. Jeb Havens and Xavier Toscano, two gay local singer-composers, both known for performing everywhere from bars to benefits, will be among the talents at this year’s Pride main stage show, Sunday June 30. Catch up with them before they get more famous. Xavier Toscano’s enthusiasm is contagious. That is when he isn’t being flown to London, Reno, or Hawaii to perform. The local boy has done good. His new album Feels So Good is nearly complete, and at the Pride performance, he’ll be singing songs from that CD. “It’ll probably be twelve tracks, mostly with a dance vibe,” said Toscano. “I’m working with new producers. We’ve been hard at work at it. It’s better than the stuff I’ve done before,” he said. Like others, Toscano remains independent, and dependent on fans, for sales and bookings. “I just go where the music takes me,” he said of his recent travels, which included Washington, D.C. and Washington state. Toscano says he grateful for any opportunity to perform, even at far-flung Pride events.

“In the beginning when people knew barely knew who I was, it was a lot of knocking on doors,” he said. “But I started doing fundraisers and said if I wanna get out there, I should do whatever I can. I’ve been lucky and I still do fundraisers, and it’s all good. But at the same time I love to support good causes, if someone else is donating their time.” But like other indies on the way up, he also likes a paid gig. Along with sponsorships from SuperCuts, Toscano has done some commercial song work to back up his own creativity. It’s paying off. His Reverb Nation profile has 60,000 fans. (www.reverbnation.com/xaviertoscano) With an open vocal style, some of Toscano’s dance songs take on a sad tone, as with heartcrushed “Threw Me Away.” But others like “To the Sky” celebrate life, while more R&B do-wop-influenced songs like “Movin’ On” hint at eras gone by. And the acid-dance “Sex on Fire” hearkens to guilty-pleasure ‘80s synth bands. Toscano mostly takes a dance-track Top 40 approach with his music, and his inspirations are expansive. “I redid my bio and cited so many artists, the list got longer, I made it more concise. But overall, I like music that makes people feel good.” Big crowds are no stranger to the performer, whose gig at London Pride was outdoors, with estimated 5,000 people in Trafalgar Square. “It was thrilling; it was a joy,” Toscano said with his catching enthusiasm. “The main difference is that people are accepting at such a show. I would prefer to do events like Pride. People are there to listen. In a club, only the people who know you are there to listen.” After San Francisco’s events, Toscano will also perform at Castro Valley’s Pride events on Saturday, July 13; Reno Pride on Saturday, August 17, and Salinas Valley Pride on Saturday, September 14. With songs and music videos, you can check out Toscano’s music online at www.xaviertoscano.com

To hear Jeb Havens sing of woeful breakups, you might think that the handsome bear cub vocalist and composer specializes in romantic heartache. His lyrics can get searingly intimate, as in “Closer.” The variation between his studio-produced music and his plaintive and open live performances is notable. He also can do a mean cover of other artists’ songs. His most frequent gig is Homophonic, held each third Saturday at Martuni’s (4 Valencia St.), and he’s performed with colleagues (also out gay) singersongwriters Matt Alber and Eric Himan. But can Haven’s intimate emotional music translate to the Pride mainstage? Fortunately, Havens has a few talented friends. Along with an informal unplugged cover ensemble, The Hangover Brigade, Havens’ recent collaboration with Oliver Voigt and Rowsy Bosch has expanded his solo sound to more layered music. “It’s definitely a bigger sound, a sort of a blend of our two styles,” said Havens of his collaboration with Voigt. “Each of us come from a different musical background. Oliver comes from electronic music, and is originally from Germany. When we first start-

ed working together, it was a process to find where we were coming from. Some elements from my piano, vocals and storytelling hold the arc of a song. His has more of an industrial sound. It’s been a good journey for me, learning how to write more kind of pop songs.” Expect new material at the group’s Pride gig. “We’ve been spending a few months in the studio, and releasing then one at a time, soon,” said Havens, who was almost as happy to have found back-up dancers. At about the same time, new music will be available on iTunes. “It’s been a lot of working together for a year and a half, with deciding what kind of sound to work together,” said Havens. “I’m excited for the new stuff to be released.” Unusual gigs are no stranger to Havens, who performed at last year’s Folsom Street Fair, and even in a boy band at a theme park (years ago). But is Havens more comfortable in a smaller performing environment? Among the many videos he’s recorded and shared on his YouTube channel are the charming “closet sessions,” where, (“strictly born out of necessity, so I wouldn’t bother my neighbors,” Havens said), Havens recorded some songs literally in his closet. “I do love the intimacy of the Martuni’s environment,” he admitted. “Even though people are drinking and talking. Hosting that monthly show has been a great way to show off new material in a relaxed environment. If I can get people to be quiet, maybe I’ve done something right.” “But I definitely enjoy it, a part of playing and performing is self-therapy, and an emotional experience for me. I would be happy to play in an empty room, especially if there was a grand piano.” Along with his own versions, Havens has also done a few cover songs with the Hangover Brigade. “It’s been a really great challenge and experience to

The Gay Freedom Day parade on Polk street in 1976.
I
t was Gay Freedom Day. Sunday, June 27, 1976. “Want to watch the parade?” Essex said. He’d gone last year. It was all new to me. “I love a parade,” I said, taking a last toke on the dying roach. “The parade route’s different this year,” Essex said, “but I bet we can find it.” “Bet we can,” I said, popping the dead roach in my mouth. We hopped in the mustard yellow van and headed for Polk Street. Parking spots were nonexistent. “There’s one,” Essex said. He pulled the van into a yellow loading zone and hopped out. His purple tank-top came off and was threaded under his belt, showing off his many years at the gym. Groups of shirtless men passed us. “Let’s follow them,” he said. The parade was forming along Polk Street. I retrieved a 1976 Official Gay Freedom Day Program someone had dropped. “It says here the parade will form on Polk Street between Pacific and Pine, head to Market Street, then to Noe, and end up at Duboce Park,” I said. The cover of the eight-page brochure featured a long stemmed rose dividing two women from two men, all balanced on an open hand. We continued down Polk toward Pine. The roar of motorcycles brought us curbside just in time to see bare-breasted Dykes on Bikes gunning their hogs and choppers, leading off the parade. 10 BARHTAB • bartabsf.com • June 2013
“That’s new,” Essex said above the roar of the bikes. The scent of exhaust fumes and sweat hung in the hot air. Dykes on Bikes continued vroom-ing their way toward Market. Floats sponsored by gay bars and other gay groups followed. A vintage firetruck from a Folsom Street bar was cheered as it sprayed the crowd. The Angels of Light gave the crowd a free show as they tapdanced to applause from the crowd. A shirtless Kermit the Frog in short-shorts, a bouquet of roses ready for Miss Piggy, rode aloft on the roof of a pickup truck. Rainbow flags weren’t symbolic yet and political floats not yet de rigueur. Gay Freedom Day 1976 was a celebration filled with lighthearted fun. With temperatures in the 90s, most guys and some gals in the estimated crowd of 90,000 to 120,000 were shirtless. We reached Civic Center at Market, where the parade usually ended and post-parade celebrations began. “There’s nothing here,” Essex said. “Want to go to the Gay Freedom Day Fair at Marx Meadow?” Post-parade celebrations had been moved to Duboce Park where shuttle buses took revelers to Marx Meadow in Golden Gate Park. We made our way back to the van. It hadn’t been towed. We found Marx Meadow near JFK Drive. A crowd was gathering. Squawks from the on-
stage sound system delayed the show. The crowd continued to grow. The temperature rose. Many made their way to the shady glens that fed into the meadow. More than shirts came off. Other gay celebrations were consummated. I found myself buck naked as we waited for the faulty sound system to be fixed. A disco flatbed float with sound arrived. The on-stage
system finally came to life. The crowd roared at the double treat and stayed for the enchantment, and the sunburn. By the following year the parade route was changed to pretty much what it is today. Variations of the rainbow flag were introduced, and the floats were more political. It still remained a day of celebration and fun. ✸

look at contemporary pop and dance music and say, ‘What would I do with this? What kind of song would I write?’ I’m a bit of a chameleon, so it’s a fun challenge.” Is a fulltime singing career in the plans? Havens does have a day job. With dozens of songs on YouTube, Havens has developed a fan base. “My YouTube audience is just helping me continue to make music and put as much of it out there as I can,” said Havens. “I don’t think of it as much as a product. PR is a game I don’t understand or have a huge interest in.” The more personal style is his forte. “I definitely love when people find my music,” said Havens. “I’ll get a great email or online comment every once in a while. It’s great, hearing from people all over the world and how it’s connecting to them. That’s the Oliver Voigt and Jeb kind of reward that I love.” Havens’ Rowsy Bosch CD Still, getting people to listen does need a bit of promotion, which is why the Pride Day performance may Havens will also be performing at Vancouver pride provide a deserved boost to Havens’ fan base.
