The New Hopewell Deisgn IV: VERY WELCOME

The purpose behind the New Hopewell project is to rethink on the possibility of the leftover urban infrastructure from the bottom-up. The design turns existing abandoned infrastructure into new space concept that promote street activities and social interactions for the local community, as well as, giving tourists a worthwhile experience of Bangkok Street Life. The project consists of 3 vertical levels from 3 programs; the residential program, public program, commercial program. - The residential program: as the site location floods on a yearly basis; with the average height of 0.5-2 meters, the elevated accomodation is supported by the un-used concrete pillars. The program is purposed for local people and tourist as an accomodation to co-living together. - The public program: The collective programs, Urban Farming, Opening-Public Art Gallery, Public Movie Screen, and Children Playground, are mainly considered in particular context aiming to improve the relationship between local people and tourists. - The commercial program: the project gives flexibility for local people to independently occupy their street vendor carts within spaces, and also provide different strategies yet applies same structure to serve the diversity of local activities and commercial programs such as, The Frest Vegetable and Flower Market, Street Art Market, Street Fashion Market, and Street food market.

After the Hopewell Project or Bangkok’s Stonehenge, was cancelled in 1998 as the political corruption, it has been abandoned, and never utilised for more than twenty years. The never used concrete pillars standing along more than 6 kilometre in the Bangkok metropolitan. The Hopewell project significantly manifests an ongoing fundamental problem of architecture confrontation with obsolescence when built environments are devalued or perceived as they are expendable by the architectural industry and society today in Thailand. The area where the project located not only has been not utilised or occupied by local people but it also has become hostile to the city itself. Since the Hopewell project unconsciously encourages several violent crimes and drug traffickings, the Vibhavadi district where the project situates also has been devalued in term of financial and invested profit. 05

Prosthetic Branches Deisgn IV: Urban Animals

Coppersmith Barbet

excavator/ adorable/ cautious Favourite dining space: open forest Favourite private space: tree cavity Favourite unprivate space: tree branch Speciality: red forehead/ ‘tuk-tuk’ sound

The project propose a combination of organic and synthetic branches of tree, exploring the idea of temporary installation, as well as, creating a space that is conceived as an instument device to support humans and non-human being. It can be easily and quickly built up and dismantled to place in different location, depending on the suitability of the location. The project aims to investigate the possibility of designing element that creates spaces to respond to natural environment. With a condition of trees in Bangkok, the Prosthetic Branches could be assembled and create programs for both humans and animals. For instance, fertilization cycling, animal observation, organic food-source for humans and wild life, and sun bathing area. Each program was designed with the purpose to encourage and support the relationship between humans and animals. Therefore, people can interact and utilise spaces while animals can live in the urban area without getting disturbed by the humans. Bonder: A Wall That Unites (un) Common Grounds Honorable Mention Award

Bor-der (noun.): a line separating two political or geographical areas especially countries. + Bond (noun.): come or bring together for a common purpose or action. “RATHER BRING IN THAN DIVIDE.” In the world of communication, social interaction and exchange of cultures, walls should unite people, not divide them. We believe that physical borders are no longer relevant in today’s context including US-MEXICO border. However, if it is irresistible politically, we believe that the wall should attract rather than separate. Unlike a generic wall, it will be utilised for distinct functions and programs which question physical borders and purposes transforming the typology of a wall from a space-divider into a functional public spaces, serving user of any gender, ages and races, promoting social interaction, provoke culture exchange, and improve quality of life at the border. The project is focusing on exploring ideas and program typologies of public border park, creating a radical paradigm based on our manifesto about the dilemma of physical border. By understanding the context of US-MEXICO border area, the project purposes various typologies of exciting park activities as a combination of 3 zoning; sports activities, gathering area, and relacing area which we believe they could bring a lot of fun to the border, as well as, attracting and gathering people from both side, creating new community paradigms shift at outskirt.

Re-Habitat Coexist: Rethinking Zoos First Prize Award

Zoo has been phrased from enjoyable private collection to educational recreation facility. Since the animal has been perceived as an exhibited objects, the relationship between human and animal has become detached. Consequently, zoo - the only animal habitat in the city - has been disconnected to urban citizen’s sense. Instead of fencing a new territory for wildlife as a typical zoological park, we believe zoo should be part of the urban organ rather than being isolated. By understanding the existing context and animal’s requirement, the project purposes new threshold between human and animal, allowing people to publicly experience a so-called ‘Habitat Parc’ where they can rightfully use and observe Non-Sapien friends in their natural environment. This elimination of ‘urban cage’ between the Human and Animal Citizen will lead to the enhancement of the animal welfare and also raise animal preservation awareness. Urbanisation has gone far enough to the point where question of the responsibilities and the rights for urban wildlife shall be raised. This proposal sincerely urges to the public to declare urban animal citizenship, and establish zoological tax. By all means, we - as urban habitants - should take care of the animal’s quality of life and make sure that our descendant has opportunity to live in the city that has meaning more than just home to the people but rather a habitat that we all share with multi-species.

Mutual Habitat Micro-Housing Architecture Honourable Mentions “ Because housing is in everywhere, so why we only design about people who lives in the house? ” Bangkok as a lively city is recognised by its growth of the population. Thesedays, the more population increases, the more high-rise buildings are built. The project focuses not only the adaptive dwelling, serving for people high-density, but also purposes the idea to enhance citizen’s quality life and public urbanism aspect. The ‘Mutual Habitat’ is designed in simple modular in order to support a variety of each Bangkokian housing. The unit itself provides a flexibility to creates users’ own individual house. Additionally, the unit aggregation provides a variety of public spaces and programs, which serves to generate new modes of interaction between the in habitants, their neighbors, and the public spaces. It’s a chain reaction that the more units increase, the more urban piublic space for citizens will be built. This mutual relationship not onlt enchance people life quality and the city yet it also encourage social interaction within the city. PUBLIC ACCESSIBILITY The rythm of public and classroom areas provide more sufficient collective area accessibilities which encourages the campus learning environment.

Deforestation is currently one of the major issues in Malawi. School is not only an educational facility but also a dependable shelter for children. This School was designed to achieve 3 main goals that school in Africa needs; Education, Social Investigation, and Environmental Contribution. To mitigate the problem and raise awareness, the school could serve as a multi-purpose space for its local community. The building itself could be an active-learning instrument for people. Therefore, both materials and construction process should not promote an environmental impact. The designed system of construction method and planning arrangement support future expansion and other context application. Moreover, we explore the threshold between learning and living space on the campus by proposing an alternative school organization to create spaces that encourage the interaction between individuality and space. Therefore, this learning environment will not be merely occured in an individual classroom but in the entire school area. Suansaiyok Resort Project Area: 3,599 sqm (Design-Construction Drawing Process) When discussing about Kanchanaburi province, the railway pass cut through the Tenasserim Hills in the Second World War is particularly recognised by local people since there were memorable circumstances during the war. As the project client intends to build a hospitality business that reminds people, particularly visitors to acknowledge and memorise the significant historical uniqueness of Kanchanaburi, the proposed project proposition is to design the hotel that represents Kanchanaburi’s identities through the hierarchy of different spaces from reception lobby to the hotel unit room. One extraordinary area of the hotel is the reception and lobby space that were designed to reflect the railway pass with asymmetry concrete walls covered with a bamboo pattern with the local tree plants on top. The lobby area creates the main pathway connecting hotel units and all-day dining together, leading visitors to the hotel landscape that faces to the river of Kanchanaburi. Thus, visitors are able to experience distinct environmental spaces in the hotel. When they walk through the lobby, they can experience the atmosphere of cutting hill that natural light will penetrate into the space showing different patterns in different times of the day while when people arrive at the end of the lobby pathway, visitors can find the most spectacular landscape view of Khwae Noi river which is the prime viewpoint of Kanchanaburi province. With the use of local material, bamboo is essentially encouraged to apply in design hotel from the building load-bearing wall, ceiling, partition wall, doors to furniture and decorated elements in the hotel. Architecture Reading Aid Deisgn IV: VERY WELCOME

‘Architectural Reading Aid Bangkok’ is the second series of the ‘Architectural Reading Aid Ahmedabad’ (http://ruby-press.com/shop/architecture-reading-aid-ahmedabad/) which received the first prize award from the Most Beautiful German Book in 2016. The concept behind the book is to create a guide that might help its readers break free from the scripted view of the tourist and instead adopt the perspective of a temporary local , someone who engage with the city in a visceral way rather than just consuming it visually. Collaboration with Berlin-based publisher “Ruby Press” to create a new type of book for city travellers that looks different from the normal city guide books we all know.
