The City of Panama City Beach is home to an estimated 18,000 permanent residents with over 4.5 million tourists visiting the area annually. The City continues to attract new businesses, medical facilities, tourist attractions, residents and visitors, and is the fastest-growing municipality in Bay County. Inside the City limits are nine miles of the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches. The local economy is dependent on the tourism industry, as Panama City Beach is the largest City in Florida without a property tax. The primary source of funding is a one percent business tax on all goods sold within the City. As with any fast-growing community, mobility is one of the City’s greatest challenges. Transportation issues are being addressed through the improvement of Front Beach Road, the City’s main tourist corridor. Within the Front Beach Road Community Redevelopment Area (CRA), roads are being widened, with trolly lanes, sidewalks, landscaping and buried utilities being added. Segment 3 of this project, which includes a roundabout at Front Beach and SR 79, will be completed in 2024, while Segment 4.1, from Lullwater Drive to Hills Road, began in 2023. In addition, the Florida Department of Transportation is adding two more lanes to U.S. 98. The first segment, beginning in 2023, is from the SR 79 area to Nautilus Street.
