PROJECT HOME

WITH ANGELA GOODALL

Summer is finally here! After so many cold winter days, we all look forward to sunshine, warmth and plenty of outdoor activities; making a new outdoor kitchen the perfect home addition for spring and summer entertaining. Beauty is important, but function should be the first consideration when planning your outdoor entertainment space. Key components are: #1 The grill, of course! Weber is still the most popular brand, but there are many others on the market. If your grill is going to be built into cabinetry or a structure you want to ensure that you are selecting a high-quality model that will last for many years. Wolf offers high quality grills in many sizes to accommodate any outdoor kitchen design. Take the time to research some of the additional features that you might like so they can be planned for in your design. For example, if you choose a rotisserie feature, power will be required to run the motor. #2 Outdoor refrigeration. Whether it is for additional beverage storage or to house food supplies, a double drawer unit is a convenience that I highly recommend. It will be much more effective than a standard beverage cooler.

#3 Last, but not least, is a sink. Let’s admit it, most grill masters are pretty messy, with BBQ sauce going everywhere. The ability to clean up without having to haul soapy water from the house is a huge convenience. Of course, there are always plenty of extras! Popular items are wood fired pizza ovens, ice makers, and the latest innovations such as the Big Green Egg charcoal grill. Do your homework when designing your outdoor kitchen to make sure that you have everything your need for perfect barbecues.

Once you have your design down, material selection is pretty standard, with wood and stone being the most popular. Stainless cabinetry will withstand Northern

summer chillin’ & grillin’

Michigan elements and can be warmed up with teak or mahogany door inserts. Make sure that your countertop material can withstand our freezing temperatures as not all granite material is dense enough and will absorb water, potentially causing freezing and cracking. Hopefully, this will set you up for grilling success and make your next bbq super memorable. Happy Grilling!

THE HABITUAL SAYING OF “WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN”

is the epitome within the walls of this home. The owner prides themselves on recycle, reuse, repurpose. You may have never seen the concept come to life so beautifully on this grand of a scale. It is entirely curated with rare, archaic objects and found goods from all over the world. It’s a diverse collection of erstwhile items; antiques, uncommon furniture, industrial lighting, aged doors, former windows, used signs, and hundreds of distinguished accents with a few manufactured reproductions blended in—all from Antiquities Warehouse of Grand Traverse. The home serves as the official crown jewel showpiece to exemplify the store’s wares and show “out of the ordinary” ways to rethink design to see your home in a whole new light.

THE FLAGSHIP

WAREHOUSE is located in Phoenix, AZ and features a mind-boggling 35,000 square feet full of these salvaged curiosities from around the globe. It’s where legendary designer Ralph Lauren handpicked elements to ship across oceans to adorn their latest stores, premiering in Barcelona, South Korea, and Sydney. Also, a frequent face is the famous Fixer Upper and Magnolia star Joanna Gaines, interior designer extraordinaire. It’s her hidden gem for the one-of-a-kind treasures she debuts in her dream home unveilings. And it’s the place late-night tv host Jimmy Kimmel asked to be shut down for his own VIP shopping experience.

We are fortunate right here in Traverse City, on a smaller scale, that the same unique experience is available for us to find just the right “wow” distinctive piece that screams “take me home.”

The original home was beautifully built, but to effortlessly portray the warehouse style and ambiance of the procured goods as a model masterpiece, a detailed renovation was necessary. Talented craftsmen’s hands laid the foundation for the finished home to radiate at any angle. From the exquisite landscaping to the striking kitchen’s handcrafted walnut cabinets and beyond, the homeowner makes sure we mention every professional skilled tradesman that was put to the test many times over. To make blueprints on mere paper become a remarkable reality. “I showed them lots of pictures of what I envisioned, and they made it happen.”
