Winter Beauty

“AN ICY WINTER SUNRISE”

A quiet moment in nature watching this peaceful sunrise, and the gentle sounds of the pancake ice bobbing around. Photo taken at Lighthouse County Park on Lake Huron near Port Hope, Michigan.

An unseasonably warm January sunrise on the shores of Lake Huron,Tawas Point State Park, East Tawas, MI.

“POINT BETSIE LIGHTHOUSE”

Winter losing its icy grip at Point Betsie. The combination of the morning sun, and the melting ice made the water in Lake Michigan a gorgeous aqua blue, typical of this area.

"SAND POINT ICE CURTAINS"

Shelly McCormick checking out the Sand Point Ice Curtains. The frozen columns of blue-green ice form from spring water trickling down from above. Simple, stunning, and pretty scary being in there too!

“GRAND ISLAND ICE CAVES”

These ice cave photos were taken along the historic and beautiful Grand Island shoreline, part of Lake Superior. When Michigan has a cold winter, Munising Bay can freeze over, making it possible to cross the ice to the island. McCormick and his wife, Shelly (pictured), always check with the locals first for information regarding the ice conditions, and where to cross. "It's an amazing thing to see, ice curtains over 30 feet tall and hidden caves to find and explore. Ice cleats, snowshoes, or ice crampons are a must, along with a warm pair of boots,” says McCormick.

MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER: John McCormick

Photographer and owner of Michigan Nut Photography

John McCormick has been interested in photography since he was a young boy. “My father had a German-made 35mm camera that he brought home from overseas that I was fascinated with,” he explains. “It was around 1982 when I purchased my first single-lens reflex camera and started shooting Michigan landscapes as a hobby.”

There is beauty in all of Michigan, but McCormick is drawn to Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. He especiallyenjoys shooting at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. To him, this area has everything a nature photographer could ask for: spectacular sunsets, sand dunes, pristine rivers and streams, beautiful waterfalls, rock formations and sandstone cliffs. Another subject he enjoys photographing are stunning lighthouses throughout the state. He expands, “I really enjoy shooting them in late autumn when the storms are blowing in off of the lakes, and in winter when freezing spray encases them with a beautiful coating of ice.”
