THE BAYLOR DIFFERENCE
SCIENCE
Immerse Yourself
IN THE WORLD OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
You will learn to think like a research scientist. In fact, that is at the core of the Baylor Research mission. We understand that science is not about content or a body of facts that explain the natural world, but instead is a process that we use to generate and confirm new knowledge. This principle of experiential learning guides Baylor Research in the Upper School and is most evident in our laboratory spaces. Even as early as sixth grade and throughout Middle School, Baylor exposes students to meaningful scientific topics, processes and procedures, and equipment.
AS A STUDENT IN THE BAYLOR RESEARCH PROGRAM YOU WILL: Learn about the natural world through a scientific process, not a collection of content or a body of facts. Generate and confirm new knowledge. Describe and test patterns and generate testable explanations. Understand the quantitative nature of science and technology.
Have your own research critiqued and evaluated by peers. Understand the connection between statistics and confidence and learn to use statistics to quantify uncertainty Know and embrace failure. Discovery and development is an iterative process. Failure helps identify next steps or alternative steps toward a goal. Learn to be critical of your own research and those of your peers using logic to evaluate research.
1st year You will be guided on a progression of advanced courses... Once you have an area of interest in either Engineering, Biomedical, or Environmental Research, you will progress through the program in stages. Successful students are considered for Advanced Research and Thesis in their selected field. Each year, students highlight their work at the annual Science and Engineering Symposium, and students are recognized through peer-reviewed presentation and publications.

THE BAYLOR DIFFERENCE You will learn from experienced research faculty.
You will see what leadership looks like.
Baylor students learn from and with three Ph.D. researchers who are leading the way in developing curriculum and programs that will inspire the next generation of research scientists.
As Chattanooga faced an overwhelming need for COVID-19 testing in March 2020, two Baylor Research faculty members stepped up to the challenge. Dr. Dawn Richards and Dr. Elizabeth Forrester, both trained molecular biology researchers, implemented a protocol that reduced the turnaround time for test results from days to hours. It was a game-changer – and probably a life-saver – for the local community. This is leadership in action: recognizing a need and taking steps to make a positive difference. Now, they are turning their expertise to the Baylor community by providing COVID-19 testing for all students and faculty.
You will use top technology tools in state-of-the art labs. The Weeks Science Building is supported with a $15 million endowment to ensure the most advanced program possible. In our molecular biology and engineering research labs, students work with an impressive array of highly specialized equipment rivaling technology found at leading universities.
