>>Fun as big as all OUTDOORS! for boys and girls ages 8 -16

Boundary-Defying Adventures For nearly 40 years, Baylor Walkabout has set the standard for school-based outdoor programs. From canoeing and kayaking to camping and climbing, Walkabout has helped young people explore their own limits and learn to lead the way.

Unleashing discovery. Now, that same adventurous fun is available to any rising 3rd – 11th grade boy or girl looking for a uniquely fun summer experience. Camp Walkabout gives campers experience in the outdoors, memories that will last a lifetime and friends with whom to share them. And there is no experience necessary! Tennessee’s outdoor buffet. Chattanooga’s incredible array of outdoor opportunities makes it the Southeast’s premiere adventure destination. Walkabout campers will kayak, canoe and paddleboard through the Tennessee River Gorge, hike to remote waterfalls and swimming holes, rock climb on the world-renowned sandstone known as the Tennessee Wall, head underground to explore the vast network of local caves, sleep under the southern stars and experience exhilaration they can’t find anywhere else.

“Walkabout” is a term used by Australian aboriginal tribes to describe a young person’s transition into adulthood through self-discovery in the wilderness. Find out more at: www.baylorschool.org/campwalkabout.

The Director. Bett Adams ’02 began his outdoor career on Baylor’s freshman trip in 1999 when he first sat in a kayak. He has been involved with Baylor Walkabout ever since. In his lengthy career as an outdoor professional, Bett has worked with middle school-aged students in all aspects of outdoor education. Underneath that very professional and responsible exterior, though, Bett is just a kid who loves the fun and adventure that can only be experienced through summer camp. If you have any questions about Camp Walkabout, he would love to hear from you!

The Staff. The Camp Walkabout staff sets this program apart from other camps. All veterans of Baylor’s renowned Walkabout program, they are more than just counselors; they are mentors, instructors, facilitators, role models and above all, friends. The group is carefully selected for their youth, energy, dedication and passion both for the outdoors and for teaching the young people they lead through it. They are highly qualified in fostering a supportive, noncompetitive environment that sets campers up for success and lifelong friendships.

Job One: Safety. We recognize that safety is the top concern for any parent, and Camp Walkabout creates an environment that allows campers to stretch their limits while ensuring their well-being. Well-managed risk is the key to success in an outdoor program, so the counselors all have outdoor medical training and the group leaders have all completed the 80-hour Wilderness First Responder certification. Baylor Walkabout has built an extraordinary safety record over its 40 years, and the same safeguards are built in the Camp Walkabout experience.

Lessons in Leadership. Leadership training is a Walkabout cornerstone, and the outdoors has a way of teaching young people leadership skills that they cannot learn in any other setting. Beyond the lessons intrinsic to working together in the woods and on the water, every camper gets a chance to be the Leader of the Day, an honor that can consist of picking a hiking route to leading the discussion at the close of the day.

Time to eat. The key to a “happy camper” is a varied and delicious menu, and Walkabout campers enjoy a mix of hearty meals prepared in Baylor’s dining facility. They also learn to cook on their own during their wilderness adventures, and even prepare backcountry meals for the group. Warning: aspiring outdoor chefs will want to try their recipes out on the family when they return home.

Re-define your summer. We know it’s time to put down the books. Question is: What should you pick up? This summer, make it a map, a paddle board, a kayak, and whole new set of experiences with Camp Walkabout. No previous outdoor experience is necessary… just an adventurous spirit, an enthusiastic attitude, and a willingness to try new things and make new friends. Re-define yourself. People travel from all over to play in Chattanooga, one of the Southeast’s premiere destinations for outdoor adventure because of its ability to exhilarate and revivify them. Baylor is located on a river adjacent to a lake at the foot of three mountains. If you can do it outdoors, you can do it at Camp Walkabout!
