...and where have they gone?

A native of Gulf Shores, Ala., Sophie Shea ’18 was accepted as one of Baylor’s Cartter Scholars. Given her academic success at Baylor, it is no surprise that she was sought after by colleges and universities and is now attending Grinnell College through the competitive QuestBridge College Match program that includes early acceptance with guaranteed tuition, room and board, and other expenses.

How will they lead? Baylor’s Cartter Scholars have been actors, athletes, dancers, debaters, outdoor enthusiasts, writers, mathematicians, student government officers, singers and scientists. They have hailed from California to Connecticut and Washington to Texas. They have been male and female, reflecting diverse personal

backgrounds and the world views of Baylor’s coeducational culture. What they have had in common are academic aptitude, the desire to achieve excellence, and a passion for self-discovery. They have left their marks on Baylor, and Baylor has become a part of them.

honoring excellence THE HARRIS-STANFORD HONORS PROGRAM Students admitted to Baylor as Cartter Scholars are automatically enrolled in the prestigious Harris-Stanford Honors Program, joining alongside other select members of the Upper School student body. Modeled after college honors programs, Harris-Stanford collaborates with local, regional, and national partners to provide extraordinary civic engagement, extracurricular seminars, travel and other learning and leadership opportunities for motivated students. Among the partners is the prestigious Institute for the Public Trust, a nonpartisan, non-profit organization based in Raleigh, N.C. Baylor is the first high school in the U.S. to be brought into the Institute’s leadership program.

Activities. Travel. Seminars. The curriculum for the Harris-Stanford Honors Program encompasses many aspects of business and leadership, including media and communications, philanthropy, government, justice and law enforcement, health care, economic development, and entrepreneurship. Scholars have had behind-the-scenes tours of government offices, non-profits, and thriving small businesses, as well as seminars with leaders of private and corporate foundations. Recent trips have included:

Tours of Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University in conjunction with the Institute for the Public Trust. Mock on-camera interviews with a seasoned television journalist. A visit to the state capitol in Nashville, which included lunch with a group of state representatives, a mock senate session, and presentations by elected officials, the governor’s Chief of Staff, and the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

A mission to change the world “I can truly say that my experience at Baylor can be described by one word –

transformative – and the Harris-Stanford Honors Program has been especially beneficial to me. The program prepares Baylor students for a sole purpose with many applications –

changing the world. I can only imagine the good work this

program will do as it continues to grow and gain experience year after year.” ~ Parker Catlett ’16

The Harris-Stanford Honors Program is named for legendary Baylor faculty members Bryce Harris (left) and Jack Stanford, whose lives, careers, and legacies serve as examples for Baylor scholars and leaders.

ELIGIBILITY AND NOMINATION PROCESS • Baylor’s Cartter Scholars Program is open to any rising 9th or 10th grader new to Baylor’s boarding program. recommendations, school report and transcripts, and results from the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). Finally, they must participate in a conversation with a Baylor admission counselor during a campus visit. • Scholarship finalists will be invited back to Baylor for Cartter Scholars Weekend, where they will meet with a panel of Baylor faculty members. The scholarship winners will be selected from the finalists. • Additional information regarding deadlines and application procedures can be found under the ADMISSION tab on the Baylor website.
