iPad Information DEAR MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS: Please find below some information and instructions regarding the purchase and use of the iPad in the Middle School. WHICH iPAD TO BUY? The iPad is available in a variety of prices and configurations. The 32 GB, Wi-Fi only iPads, the least expensive option, are fully capable of handling students’ academic requirements. While the 32 GB model is sufficient for their academic work, students will be somewhat limited in storing other multimedia on the device, such as videos, music, and pictures. For students who anticipate the need to have access to these types of media, a higher capacity model of the iPad should be purchased. The iPad Air and Pro models are a more expensive option, but the increased capabilities are not a requirement for academic uses. The older iPads (generation 4 or earlier) or iPad Mini (any version) are not acceptable models for use at school. iPads do not need a data plan and are suggested to be Wi-Fi only models. The school recommends purchasing the AppleCare+ coverage which provides accidental damage coverage. APPROPRIATE USE AT HOME We encourage parents to talk with their student(s) regarding appropriate use and to help set up limits for screen time and content at home. In conjunction with that discussion, there are some software options that will help enforce family rules. The iPad iOS has some parental controls available through the Settings app. These include content restrictions, purchase limitations, and a few others. We encourage you to visit apple.com and search for “parental controls” for the full descriptions and instructions for each setting.

For parents who would like more in-depth control of content on the iPad, there are third party providers that have this service. While the school does not recommend a vendor, please make sure that the software is disabled during the school day so the students can make full use of the iPad. Most providers allow scheduling of exempt times or locations. APPLE ID AND APPS The school recommends the use of the Family Sharing feature available with App IDs. This allows for the creation of Apple IDs for children younger than 13 and with no credit card information linked to their account. Families may download apps over the summer that will be used for school. These apps include: Outlook (free), Notability, Word (free), OneDrive (free), and the Safari browser. HOW BAYLOR KEEPS OUR STUDENTS SAFE In order to protect our students and faculty, the school has in place a robust firewall and internet filter. Middle School students are the most heavily restricted users on campus and are prevented from accessing harmful sites as well as those with content that is objectionable. Additionally, in the Middle School, content that may cause a distraction is also filtered, such as online gaming or social media. Middle School students are also only allowed to send or receive email from Baylor faculty or other Baylor Middle School students. The school is constantly evaluating and determining the best methods to ensure the privacy, safety, and security of our students when using technology.

➡ If you have any additional questions or concerns, please

feel free to contact Shawn M. Arrington, Chief Information Officer at sarrington@baylorschool.org.

Attendance Procedures Regular class attendance is an essential part of a Baylor education and a key factor in academic success. Therefore, the school will closely monitor student attendance. Please keep in mind that while Baylor recognizes that students might have occasional absences due to illness or family emergencies, any absences beyond 12 for a year-long class and six for a semester-long class will require judgment by the Middle School Head for continued enrollment or schedule modification for the student. WHO DO I CONTACT ABOUT MEDICAL ABSENCES? Sam Bankston at (423) 757-2636 or sbankston@baylorschool.org. WHAT DO I DO IF MY CHILD IS SICK AND WILL MISS SCHOOL? To keep our school environment healthy, we ask that you keep your child home if they have a fever or vomiting in the last 24 hours. If your child must miss school or arrive late for any reason, please contact the Middle School Office each day the child will be absent before the start of classes at 8:40 a.m. (Sam Bankston at (423) 757-2636 or sbankston@baylorschool.org) WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD FEELS ILL DURING THE SCHOOL DAY? Your child should speak to an adult who will direct them to the Health Center. If a student needs to go home due to illness, the Health Center will talk with you and the student will sign out in the Health Center. WHAT DO I DO IF MY CHILD NEEDS TO MISS PART OF A DAY FOR A MEDICAL APPOINTMENT? Call or email Sam Bankston before your child needs to leave campus. Sign your child out through the Middle School Office. A doctor’s note should be turned in after the appointment for readmission that day.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CONTACT INFORMATION Middle School Office Sixth-Grade Dean Sam Bankston Austin Williams (423) 757-2636 (423) 267-8506, ext 450 sbankston@baylorschool.org awilliams@baylorschool.org Middle School Head Jenn Lindsay (423)757-2837 jlindsay@baylorschool.org

Seventh-Grade Dean Mae Weiss (423) 267-8506, ext 548 mweiss@baylorschool.org

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SCHEDULE A MEDICAL APPOINTMENT FOR MY CHILD? After classes end for the day is the best time to schedule appointments. Given the choice between missing classes or missing an afterschool roll, students should not miss class. If you need to schedule a regularly occurring appointment during the school day, please use the schedule on myBaylor to plan ahead. Please be mindful that your child does not miss the same subject repeatedly. HOW DO I REQUEST AN EXCUSED ABSENCE FOR REASONS OTHER THAN ILLNESS? Contact the appropriate Grade-Level Dean. Requests should be made a minimum of one week prior to the requested absence dates. Permission will be granted only for extraordinary circumstances and, if granted, will count towards the maximum number of allowable absences noted above. Students who miss school without prior permission should expect the absence to be unexcused. WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL BREAKS? CAN STUDENTS LEAVE EARLY OR RETURN LATE DUE TO TRAVEL? We ask families to pay close attention to break dates, to plan travel far ahead, and to live within the published dates. Any requests must also be directed to the Grade-Level Dean well before the break begins; however, students should expect that requests for adding additional time to school breaks will result in the assigning of a Make-Up Study except for exceptional circumstances. WHAT ABOUT EXAM DAYS? Students who miss any exam for any reason (other than illness) should expect to receive a zero on the exam.

Eighth-Grade Dean Matt Matoh (423) 267-8506, ext 461 mmatoh@baylorschool.org
