Procession starts at 2pm from HSBC Bank Route runs along pedestrian area William Street, past the Seaside Museum, crossing at Makcari’s to the Sea Front and to the Clocktower Plaza where there will be a short performance... ...Equality By Herne Bay High’s Female Drama Group, at the Clocktower Plaza before the procession continues through the alley by the Diver’s Arms through to Beach Street, across the crossing to Beach Creative for tea. A local newspaper article from 1910 provided the inspiration for the first celebration of International Women’s Day in Herne Bay. The article is a vivid description of a visit to Herne Bay Town Hall by prominent suffragette Christabel Pankhurst as part of her countrywide tour to campaign for votes for women.
In tribute, a procession in full Edwardian dress will take place on Saturday 12 March at 2pm. Young people studying drama and dance at Herne Bay High School will perform a piece on the Clocktower Plaza. A week of assemblies will take place in school celebrating International BOOK LAUNCH 2pm to 4pm women’s day focusing on reSuffragette Seaside - a history of the women’s enacting the suffrage campaign, suffrage movement in Herne Bay by Mandy Boxall & ‘Justice for women’ in Herne Bay Linda Bowditch, also book table/display at Beach Creative 1910 as well as looking at the Organised by Herne & Broomfield Local History Group role and aspirations of women in Seaside Museum, Herne Bay contemporary society.
