Dear Bay Supporters, Since our founding, Morning Meeting has served as a focal point, bringing students and adults together as one community. Knowing Bay, I felt reasonably confident of what I would hear last year in presentations and performances. Yet, from day one, I found myself inspired by the courage, interests, and vision of our students and alumni. On many occasions I’d head back to my office at 8:30 thinking, “Wow…I didn’t have that kind of insight when I was in high school!” From original musical performances with our singer-songwriters to students sharing their personal journeys through life, I was consistently struck by the power and impact of our students’ voices. The development of “voice” in children does not happen by chance. Rather, it requires an ecosystem, including both home and school, in which students are both nurtured and challenged to refine who they are and what they think about the world. As Bay enters its 13th year, I am deeply impressed with our school’s success in the hard work of cultivating student voice. Beyond the breadth of knowledge and skills our students develop, the confidence of self and the clarity of passion Bay students gain over their four-year journey will continue to promote their happiness and success in university and beyond. And, as educators, the development of our students’ individual and collective potential is exactly what motivates us. There is another voice critical to this work: yours. Bay has been built by the collective energies and contributions of so many supporters. Without your voice, your input, and your dedication Bay would be but an idea. Instead, we are a distinctive school with strong roots heading into a comprehensive strategic planning process that will drive our vision to 2020 and beyond. This year’s Annual Report acknowledges and appreciates the many groups of individuals, from parents and alumni to faculty and staff, who donated during the 2015-2016 school year to sustain an exceptional Bay education and our work cultivating the voices of the next generation. On behalf of the faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, and student body, thank you for preserving, and building our mission and the promise we make to each family. Thank you, Gracias, and 谢谢,

Luke W. Felker Head of School

Board of Trustees From the Chair, Board of Trustees Dear Friends, Bay enters its 13th year as an established and highly regarded high school, with growing momentum and great promise. There has been much accomplished in a short time and there are so many to thank: visionary and tenacious founders and an exemplary faculty and administration, a community of parents, guardians and friends generous with their ideas, their time and their means. Above all, we have a spirit of conviction that is, indeed, rare. We would not be where we are without each of you. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you! Over the past year, we have welcomed our new Head of School, Luke Felker, and his family to San Francisco and to The Bay School. Luke invested heavily in a smooth transition and, as the school year ended, we felt his strong leadership and emerging impact throughout the school. We are fortunate to have Luke’s vision, energy and commitment at our helm and we look forward to his leadership for years to come. In addition to the successful transition in leadership, much was accomplished in 2015-16. The school continued to enrich curriculum, advance pedagogy, strengthen support areas, revamp key processes and gain in its standing. Under the inspiring leadership of Colin Lind and Vicky Penny, we established a new record in giving to the Annual Fund. The Board successfully launched the preparation phases of a strategic planning process and advanced the quiet phase of an endowment campaign, both essential building blocks for enhancing Bay’s programs, continuing its strong trajectory, and ensuring its success in service to all members of our community. In June, the Board also welcomed new members to serve Bay’s mission. Joining us as trustees this year are: Joseph Dworetzky (P’18), Anne Harper (P’19), Wendy Hayward Wendling (P’19), Rich Levine (P’18), Maryam Muduroglu (P’18), and Stephanie Sears (P’19). As PGA President, Sue Partington (P’17 & P’18) also joins the board as an ex officio member. Our new Board colleagues each have deep experience with non-profit organizations, as well as passion for Bay and its community. Collectively, their backgrounds include multi-cultural and global life experiences, as well as expertise in education, law, youth advocacy, development, finance, marketing, and strategic planning. Inevitably, each year also brings departures from the Board. In June, we bid farewell to Lesli Hobart, who concluded her term of impactful service as PGA president, and said our good-byes to long-serving trustees Therese Lawless and John Hafernick. The contributions of these trustees have been innumerable and immeasurable and we will forever be grateful for them. After a strong 2015-16, we look ahead with excitement, aspiration and a strong sense of accomplishment.

From the President of the Parent Guardian Association (PGA) Building Community and Volunteer Spirit! Every year, Bay parents and guardians come together to build a warm and welcoming community for families to get to know each other through our wonderful PGA. This group enthusiastically contributes countless volunteer hours to support Bay students and staffulty. We kicked off the 2015-2016 school year with two all-school family gatherings. In the fall, we welcomed freshman families with a festive BBQ potluck in the courtyard accompanied by live student music. We capped off the first trimester with the Winter Dinner in the Great Room, with delicious potluck celebrating our Bay families’ rich and diverse heritages. Bay parents and guardians mixed and mingled at morning coffees and potluck dinners, on group hikes in our beautiful Presidio location, and while working together at the Audubon Society and the San Francisco Food Bank. Parents learned more about Bay student life at staffulty presentations covering topics such as the Bay Precepts, Mindfulness, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This year, a record number of parents and guardians actively supported the Bay community by volunteering their time and talents in the mornings, evenings and on weekends. Parents cheerfully staffed Admission Open Houses, helped put on the fabulous Bay Splash Anchors Aweigh celebration, phoned fellow families for our annual fund drive, staffulty appreciation snacks and breakfasts, and greeted guests at Bay’s graduation, just to name a few. Thank you, parents and guardians, for continuing the tradition of building a welcoming community for all and for your generous volunteer contributions. Your enthusiasm and inclusive spirit are truly the heart of what makes The Bay School such a distinctive community for our students and families! Warmest Regards,

Lesli Hobart Parent of Bobby ‘17 and Kathryn ‘12 President, Parent Guardian Association 2015-2016

Alumni Profiles: Bay Impact Rebecca Roycroft ’09 “ I love how easy it was to pursue any and all of my interests at Bay”

After graduating from Bay in 2009, where did you attend college? How did you end up becoming a Physics PhD student? I started at UCLA in fall of 2009 and graduated in summer of 2013 with a degree in physics and a minor in classical civilization. I decided to major in physics during my first year at UCLA (I was also considering chemistry), and started working toward the minor in classical civilization towards the end of my second year. When I started college, I did not really know what I wanted to do with my degree in physics, but always knew that graduate school was an option. I started working in a research laboratory in my second year of college. When I joined the plasma physics research group at UCLA, I learned that physics research— specifically, plasma physics research—was something I wanted to pursue. With that in mind, I applied to graduate school, specifically to PhD programs with strong research and curriculum in plasma physics. Here at University of Texas, Austin, I work at the Texas Petawatt Laser, studying laser plasma interactions and the behaviors of high-density plasmas. I am currently visiting Los Alamos National Laboratory and working on an experiment at the Trident Laser Facility there. I have also taken some courses in Latin to continue my studies of classical civilization. Are there certain Bay precepts to which you still feel particularly connected to? One precept I always come back to is: “We value patience with ourselves and others; we don’t rush to judgment.” This precept is important to me both for personal and professional reasons. Scientists are urged to look at data in an objective way and evaluate different explanations and ideas logically and thoroughly. It is important not to rush to judgment, because in rushing, details can be overlooked. In my research, there are often multiple hypotheses explaining the phenomena we observe, and we must try to be as accurate and thorough with our experiments as possible to test different theories.

In my personal life, I find that taking the time to get to know other people and learning their perspective is important. I’ve found that patience and a willingness to learn and understand has been useful as I navigate the world and meet new people. Do you still maintain relationships with students or teachers from Bay? I do! I try to connect with fellow Bay alumni wherever I may find them. I love seeing what everyone is doing over social media and am so proud to be a part of the legacy of Class of 2009. Everyone is out there doing some seriously wonderful stuff. I also make a point of coming to the yearly open houses for alumni, because I love to see how Bay has changed since I graduated—and how it has stayed the same! How did Bay prepare you for your college – both socially and academically? I love how easy it was to pursue any and all of my interests at Bay—my intellectual curiosity was both stimulated and encouraged in all of the classes I took, including the math and science classes! I have some of the fondest memories working on a capstone project for analysis of functions in 11th-grade, where I would take a notebook with me everywhere just in case I was inspired. I also appreciated the senior projects course, where I had the opportunity to work in a chemistry research lab during the summer before my senior year. Math and science were very exciting for me in high school and I truly felt like I could have a career in STEM if I kept working hard and being curious! Socially, Bay was a place where I felt I could be myself, and where I felt I could work on becoming my best self even if I made some mistakes along the way. The confidence and strong sense of self that Bay helped me cultivate has served me well throughout the challenges of college and graduate school.

Samuel Green ’11 “ Bay’s teachers were the real difference-makers for me during my college experience.” Sam Green, second from the left.

How did Bay prepare you for your college – both socially and academically? I believe that academically, Bay’s teachers were the real difference-makers for me during my college experience. I would say that going to a big school, Boston University, meant that I had to seek out those relationships with professors. Because I knew of the importance of a strong relationship with my teachers in high school, I didn’t hesitate to approach professors at college (which was far more daunting) who still advise me on my career path today. After graduating from Bay in 2011, where did you attend college? How did you end up becoming a Peace Corps Volunteer? Following my time at Bay, I went to Boston University where I completed a degree in international relations with a minor in business administration. During my senior year, while trying to mull over my options, I decided to send in an application for the Peace Corps. I had spent the majority of my senior year taking graduate classes focusing on European history, specifically the Balkans. Naturally, I was deeply immersed in the region while applying for the Peace Corps. After graduating in the spring of 2015, I interned for Congressman John Garamendi, 3rd District of California in Washington D.C., I would go on to be hired as a staffer working as a special assistant to the Congressman, assisting with foreign policy related legislation and assisting our chief of staff on American made ship building initiatives. During my time in DC I received the life changing acceptance notice from Peace Corps. Luckily I wouldn’t be on the fence about what to do for long. Congressman Garamendi actually served in the Peace Corps himself in Ethiopia in the 1960’s, and he encouraged me to go on the adventure of a lifetime. He repeated the famous slogan “The toughest job you’ll ever love,” and encouraged me that working as an economic development volunteer in Kosovo would not only be an amazing experience, but that it would also be a step in the right direction for my aspirations to work in international development or for the State Department.

I worked for 9 months in DC, before I shipped out to the new Peace Corps program in Kosovo on June 4th. I am the youngest member of the founding group of Community Economic Development Volunteers in Kosovo, and plan to serve for a total of 27 months. My base project is to work with a Roma non-governmental organization that focuses on integrating the Roma population into the education system and encourages civic engagement in the municipality of Prizren in the South of Kosovo. Three months in, I have basic proficiency in Albanian and am excited to get started on my base project next week! Are there certain Bay precepts to which you still feel particularly connected to? “We value patience with ourselves and others; we don’t rush to judgment.” This precept has proven especially relevant here in Kosovo. The repercussions of the war in Kosovo in the 90’s are still very much present. The past three months, I have spent living with a host family in a small Albanian Muslim village in the north east of Kosovo undergoing training. One of the extended members of my family would always eat his food in an extremely fast and unsettling manner. At first I was a little bit shocked and might have rushed in my internal judgment of the situation. After a little bit of investigation and a conversation with other members of the family, they explained to me that ever since the war (which he fought in), he has always eaten his meals incredibly fast, the same way he used to when he was in the field. There are all sorts of small signs of the incredible devastation the conflict has had upon this small and young nation, but one has to look below the surface to see the whole picture. Do you still maintain relationships with students or teachers from Bay? There are a handful of friends and one or two teachers I keep in touch with. Primarily Mr. Broudy, my advisor when I was at Bay, and Coach Glass, one of my mentors.

Thank You Matt Hannibal! After 12 years of dedicated service, founding Bay Staffulty member Matt Hannibal moves on from Bay to his next adventure. From the Admission Office to Athletics to College Counseling, Matt made an indelible impression on this school and will be forever remembered fondly for his important contributions to the Bay community. Below Matt describes his time at Bay.

“ It is hard to believe that I will no longer start my day with Morning Meeting. It was probably what I looked forward to the most each day.

Why did you choose Bay? I heard about Bay two years prior to joining the faculty, when Malcolm, Nancy, Pam, Dennis and Ryn were just starting to get the idea off the ground. I was immediately drawn to the idea of helping to start something new and was even more intrigued by the fact that the school was aspiring to do something different: the idea of building a curriculum and designing co-curricular programming where science, religion, community and culture could all occupy the same space intrigued me. These topics and disciplines no longer had to live separately, but could instead be poured onto the canvas of this new school to intermingle the way they do in the real world as opposed to what you might see in a traditional textbook. What made Bay so special? I want to say it is the people that make Bay so special, but the more I think about it, it is more than just the bodies that fill the classrooms and the Great Room. It is, instead, the collective sense of appreciation for one another that really makes Bay what it is. You see it in the classroom, you see it in the halls, you see it during Morning Meeting, and I believe visitors see it on tours. There is a palpable sense of appreciation for one another within the community that I think is rare in a high school setting. Please name your fondest memory from Bay? While there are dozens of memories I could point to, the one that immediately comes to mind was a snowshoeing backpacking trip to Peter Grubb Hut that Katherine Riley led. It is the only outing club trip I went on while I was at Bay, but it stands out as one of my fondest memories. It was one of those moments when kids from different grades and different social groups came together to share an experience. I loved watching as kids stepped up in different ways. Each student at some point on that trip demonstrated strength, showed vulnerability, and displayed a balance of levity and humility that allowed everyone to return to school with a new appreciation for each other. What will you miss the most about Bay? Morning Meeting. I was tempted to say the beef enchilada casserole, but I’ll go with Morning Meeting. I will miss how organic and authentic Morning Meeting feels. I will miss the bravery, the humor and the humility displayed by students and staffulty alike. I will miss the spontaneity of announcements and the predictability of applause. I will miss sitting up straight and standing in silence. It is hard to believe that I will no longer start my day with Morning Meeting. It was probably what I looked forward to most each day.

Chris Garlington, Volunteer Coordination Heidi Ho, Sponsorships Lesli Hobart, PGA President Sue Partington, Sponsorships Nancy Payne, Solicitations Valerie Testa, Event Production Aaron Winer, Wine Candice Rankin, Bay Staffulty Member, Fundraising, Special Events, Alumni Manager

A heartfelt thanks to the entire Bay community for their contributions of time and resources to Bay Splash 2016. This year’s theme, Anchors Aweigh, allowed parents and guardians, faculty and staff, trustees, alumni and friends of the school to celebrate while exploring nautical delights and undersea treasures without having to get wet or even leave campus. Bay Splash is a special event because it focuses on bringing the community together while also raising critical funds for Bay. Thanks to generous sponsorships, online and silent auction bidding and fund-a-need donations, this year’s event raised well over $200,000 for Bay’s tuition assistance and academic enrichment programs. Thanks to the hard work of the Steering Committee and countless volunteers, the evening was a great success. We are grateful to the whole Bay community for making this event possible every year. See you in April for Bay Splash 2017!

Precepts The Bay School Precepts were developed to inform both our individual and community choices. They are not rules, but rather aspirations: we believe that honoring the precepts in our daily lives will allow us to develop strong, healthy relationships with ourselves and our communities. • We value living with kindness and honesty; we are careful truth tellers. • We value the importance of boundaries; we take only what is given. • We value respecting ourselves and our friends in relationships; we don’t misuse sexuality. • We value a clear mind and a healthy, strong body; we don’t intoxicate ourselves with alcohol, drugs, unhealthy food, or the misuse of technology. • We value kind speech; we don’t slander or gossip. • We value the richness of difference and diversity; we don’t praise ourselves at the expense of another; we don’t bully or haze. • We value communication; we don’t harbor anger or ill will, especially toward ourselves. • We value generosity; we share, giving and receiving help. • We value patience with ourselves and others; we don’t rush to judgment. • We value the earth, our home; we don’t pollute, we recycle and we are careful, conscious consumers.
