Dear Bay Supporters, 14 years. A drop in the bucket of time. And, yet, as Bay enters its 14th year we do so with enormous pride in the impact and strength of our school and community. In an educational milieu that still looks far more like 20th century learning and teaching than it should, Bay stands out as a pioneer. Our founders grappled with the educational model that would prepare Bay graduates to be leaders in their communities come 2040, and we continue to look long-term to guide our evolution. In this Annual Report, you’ll find a feature on Bay’s Intersession Program, an illustration of our focus on experiential education. We believe that students need to experience the world beyond our walls, and that such engagement is exponentially beneficial as a complement to Bay’s classroom education to develop student capacities, skills, and voice. To ponder one’s future steps in life without practical experience is at best a theoretical exercise; from the core curriculum to civic engagement opportunities, we want students to test assumptions, try on new intellectual hats, and refine what they know of themselves and the world. This same spirit of inquiry and hands-on learning imbues the launch of “immersives” in the fall of 2018-2019 as part of Bay Schedule 2.0 featured on page seven. We live each day our mission to unlock each student’s potential as an individual and as part of a wider community, and this work drives our energy and focus to continually innovate the Bay program to provide as relevant and impactful an education as possible. At every turn a deeply committed group of supporters and leaders have stood with Bay. I consistently remind our students at Morning Meeting of the intentional tending a community like Bay’s requires. This year’s Annual Report acknowledges and appreciates the many groups of generous individuals, from parents and founders to faculty and staff, who contributed during the 2016-2017 school year to sustain an exceptional Bay education. To give of oneself to a cause greater than one’s own is powerful, bringing a sense of common purpose to our complex world and engendering the school community’s deepest appreciation and respect. The innovative programs, passionate people, and enriching experiences that the Annual Fund sustains make Bay an exceptional educational home for our students, and we will continue to call upon you for support. On behalf of the faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, and students, thank you to our committed supporters for preserving, and building, our mission and the promise we make to each family. Thank you, Gracias, and 谢谢,

Luke W. Felker Head of School

Board of Trustees From the Chair, Board of Trustees Dear Friends, Bay enters its fourteenth year as an established and highly regarded high school with a distinctive proposition. There has been much accomplished in a short time and there is more underway as we innovate to meet the current and future needs of our students. Bay has the advantage of youth and flexibility and a spirit of conviction that allows us to remain agile and distinctive. There are so many to thank for where we are: our visionary and tenacious founders; an exemplary faculty and administration; a community of parents, guardians and friends generous with their ideas, their time and their means. We would not be where we are without each of you. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you! During the past year, his second as our Head of School, Luke Felker continued to invest in his transition while strengthening our academic and administrative foundations and taking us to the next level in educational aspiration and initiative. We are fortunate to have Luke’s vision, energy and commitment at our helm and are delighted to let you know that Luke has made a long-term commitment to Bay. In 2016-2017, the school continued to enrich curriculum, advance plans for evolution and advancement in pedagogy and schedule, strengthen support areas and enhance processes. We have unprecedented levels of interest in admissions and record enrollment. The Annual Fund, under the inspired leadership of Nancy Levine (P’18) and Vicki Penny (P’16 & ‘19), and Bay Splash have continued the track record of meeting and exceeding fund raising goals. The Board successfully launched a strategic planning process, which will be completed this year, and continued to advance the quiet phase of the endowment campaign. These initiatives are essential building blocks for enhancing Bay’s programs, continuing its strong trajectory, and ensuring its success in service to all members of our community. In June, the Board welcomed new members to serve Bay’s mission. Joining us as trustees this year are: Marian Baldauf (P’20 & ’21), Mark Blumling and John Rumsey (P’18 & ’21). Lisa Whitescarver (PGA President, P’19) will join in ex officio capacity. Our new Board colleagues have extensive experience with non-profit organizations combined with passion for Bay and its community. Collectively, their backgrounds include expertise in education, finance and investment, science and technology, and real estate development. Inevitably, each year also brings departures from the Board. In June, we bid farewell to long-serving trustees Sandy Drew, Rob Hobart, Robert Kleiner, Jim Sano and Demi Seguritan. The contributions of these trustees have been innumerable and immeasurable and we forever will be grateful for them. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to Sue Partington, our departing PGA President, who has been tireless in her efforts. On a more personal note, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve as Board Chair for the past three years, working side-by-side with such a talented and committed community of students, parents and guardians, faculty and staff, and trustees. Please join me in welcoming Rich Levine as he steps into the role this year. After a strong 2016-2017, I know Rich joins me as we look ahead with excitement, renewed aspiration and a strong sense of accomplishment.

From the President of the Parent Guardian Association (PGA) Building Community and Volunteer Spirit! This past year The Bay School Parent and Guardian Association (PGA) continued to grow and develop as a kind and inclusive organization. At Bay, parents and guardians eagerly volunteer to support the teachers and administration, and 2016-2017 was no exception. At every event many parents and guardians were ready and willing to help out. I am grateful I had the opportunity to serve as President this past year. It gave me a chance to better understand what an amazing place Bay is, as well as deepen my relationships with the staff and parent/guardian community. The PGA has always helped out in many ways, and this year with support from the administration, we forged ahead into new areas. The Bay Forum was launched in an effort to increase communication and dialog regarding parent related topics. We added The Bay Blanket, which supports families in crisis, and we held our first Grandfriend’s Day. We also debuted a Pop-up Shop at our Winter Potluck, which showcased many parent culinary talents. Our class coordinators worked hard organizing events and disseminating information specific to each class. The PGA hosted a number of social events: parent potluck dinners and coffees, hikes in the Presidio, the annual family holiday dinner, and interesting parent education lectures. We volunteered to help with social events, fundraising efforts, admissions, arts and athletic support, student mentoring, and faculty appreciation. Parents took on leadership roles for Intersession, assisted in the library, and showcased art in our glass gallery. The parents continued their commitment to provide an inclusive and supportive community. A special heartfelt thank you to all the parents and guardians for their tireless effort and support for the Bay community this past year. Your talents and commitment truly make a difference in the lives of our students. These past four years have gone by fast and volunteering at Bay has been a true pleasure. Thanks for making Bay a special place for learning and growing for all our families. Sincerely,

Sue Partington Parent of Katie ’17 and Christine ‘18 President, Parent Guardian Association 2016-2017

Experiential Learning: Intersession 2017 Each spring during Intersession week, Bay students and their teachers venture out of the classroom and into the exciting world that surrounds them. Five full days of experiential learning await students as they choose from more than 20 courses offering a broad range of hands-on learning opportunities throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Intersession is a unique opportunity for students and teachers to explore their interests together in small groups. Teachers and students work together to propose courses, varying the selection of offerings from year to year. Whether it’s shadowing medical professionals in the workplace, backpacking through Death Valley, creating a short film or analyzing outer space, Intersession is a time to work collaboratively—a time for students and teachers alike to expand their horizons.

5

Adventures in Astronomy! Bay students made their way to Tuolumne Skies Observatory in the Foothills near Yosemite to take pictures and observe the night sky. Students of all science backgrounds learned about astronomy and the fundamentals of observation as they used the observatory’s state-of-the-art equipment to capture photographs of objects deep in space. After a week of sleeping all day and working all night, students returned to Bay to analyze their photos and reflect on their experience.

Bay’s Anatomy: Intro to the Medical World Students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field had the opportunity to spend a week in the life of real medical professionals. This intersession took students to hospitals and research labs, including Kaiser Permanente and Genentech, where they learned first aid skills and basic medical training as they shadowed and learned from medical professionals. Students also had the opportunity to interact with patients and experienced first-hand the value of helping others.

Point Reyes Unplugged On this five-day “unplugged backpacking trip, students got to hike, camp and disconnect from the rest of the world. The intersession group hiked a leisurely loop through Point Reyes to a new camping spot each night. The hiking pace was slow and the focus was on being present in their environment and community, without the distraction of personal devices. Students practiced accountability, wilderness preparation, and survival skills by sharing responsibilities throughout the week, including pack weight distribution, camp set-up and meals. They also learned about the incredible and unique diversity of plant and animal life they encountered each day.

Bay Schedule 2.0

Bay’s faculty and administration have spent the last two years carefully reimagining how the schedule can further our mission of preparing students to meet the emerging obstacles of the 21st century through challenging academics and innovative thinking. Our goal was to create a schedule that increased opportunities for experiential, project-based, and interdisciplinary learning. As a result, starting Fall 2018, Bay will operate on a semester schedule, punctuated by two 3-week immersive terms. In each semester, students will take five courses that meet four times a week, for 80 minutes each day, in a rotating weekly block schedule. In each Immersive, students will take one course all day, every day. Over the course of a year, students will complete 12 course credits. 80-minute blocks, which have always been a part of Bay’s practice, allow for the incorporation of in-depth lessons and activities such as lab work, field trips, student-initiated projects, in-class writing, research, and extended discussions. Immersives lend themselves to Bay’s values of depth over breadth and real world learning, allowing us to keep our focus on preparing students for college and beyond. Bay teachers will have the ability to dive deeper and go beyond the walls of our buildings, designing educational experiences for students that are unimaginable at most other schools. The semester and immersive model is unique among Bay Area high schools and an innovative leap forward. We aim to create a more thoughtful pace to the school year, and allow greater flexibility in our notions of class time while more closely mirroring the world of work and learning in the 21st century.

PRECEPTS The Bay School Precepts were developed to inform both our individual and community choices. They are not rules, but rather aspirations: we believe that honoring the precepts in our daily lives will allow us to develop strong, healthy relationships with ourselves and our communities. •

We value living with kindness and honesty; we are careful truth tellers.

We value the importance of boundaries; we take only what is given.

We value respecting ourselves and our friends in relationships; we don’t misuse sexuality.

We value a clear mind and a healthy, strong body; we don’t intoxicate ourselves with alcohol, drugs, unhealthy food, or the misuse of technology.

We value kind speech; we don’t slander or gossip.

We value the richness of difference and diversity; we don’t praise ourselves at the expense of another; we don’t bully or haze.

We value communication; we don’t harbor anger or ill will, especially toward ourselves.

We value generosity; we share, giving and receiving help.

We value patience with ourselves and others; we don’t rush to judgment.

We value the earth, our home; we don’t pollute, we recycle and we are careful, conscious consumers.
