Dear Whoever...We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole week of regular curriculum in intersession for whatever it was that we signed up for, what we felt passionate about. You may think we're crazy for taking a music appreciation class when we could have been out doing cool things like chasing waterfalls or making cheese...But the truth is, we chose "Cultivating Your Inner Music Snob" because we wanted to listen to music...because listening to music is what we do. You may not have thought it was possible, but we deepened our appreciation for music, as well as learned about what goes on "behind the scenes" in the music industry. 4
In addition to listening to copious amounts of music, we gained access to the backroom record vault at Amoeba Records, spoke about the realities of radio with Live 105 Music Director Aaron Axelson and got hands-on DJ training from DJs Vinnie Esparza and Professor Brian Oblivion...and we are the better for it. In the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions we are bigger music nerds, better fans, critics and DJs...And this is our Zine. Read it with caution...and rock on.

The Mr. T Experience: Meet Dr. Frank

Frank Portman (Dr. Frank) was the lead singer of the bubblegum band called The Mr. T Experience (MTX). The band could be described as Green Day’s happier, funnier and more sarcastic peer. Both bands played at Gilman and got signed to “Lookout!” But, (as I’m sure you have realized) Green Day quickly passed them by and became punkrock billionaires.

The Mr. T experience was really just the creative outlet for Dr. Frank. Almost all of their songs are about girls. Frank Portman was able to bring his sarcastic sense of humor into almost all of their songs, which is the only reason to listen to their music. 6
Unlike Green Day who started out angry, reached super-stardom, and then faded out. MTX has been very successful in keeping a decent amount of local fame by changing their style (ever so slightly) every few years. They have released thirteen albums and 10 singles. It all comes back (of course) to Dr. Frank. He is the only member of the band to last since the beginning and has stayed successful by remaining open to new kinds of people, styles and instruments. Frank Portman proves that talent is not nearly as important to being creative. In short: the message trumps the music. But Portman’s creativity did not end with MTX, he has released a few solo albums and continues to play shows around the San Francisco Bay Area with former members of The Queers, The Dwarves and Kepi Ghoulie. He has also written three YA mystery novels; all of which take the point of view of high-school outcasts and tell their stories in hilarious ways without the elves and laser guns that occupy most YA. So here’s the big take-away: you can be as musically adept as you want, but it is not near as important as delivering a unique, intelligent message.

ARTIST PROFILE: Royal Blood Come On Feel The Noise! By Adam Larrimore Can a band with only one bassist and a drummer compete with a band with three people? Royal Blood, a band consisting of two, screams yes. When Royal Blood plays it sounds like a three or even four man group, but don't be fooled by the ingenious use of a bass and drums combined with a great singing voice. The heavy, distorted, and boisterous sound that Royal Blood creates is an adrenaline rush put to music. The vocals are “Muse� like and drums heart pounding. Royal Blood formed in the UK early in 2013 when Ben Thatcher went to pick up his friend Mike Kerr from the airport. The very next day the duo performed their first gig. The music that Royal Blood creates is a mix of modern garage rock and blues rock. It's true that there are a lot of musical duos like Brick + Mortar and The White Stripes but none of them have the edginess and fury that Royal Blood brings to their music. With the use of two amps and a variety of looping, distortion, and octave pedals Mike brings epic distorted melodies and complex licks into each song. 8
1+1= LOUD?
Paired with heavy pounding drums and mixture of crashing cymbals and tambourine from Ben, their music takes on a whole different energy. Royal Blood got recognized for their sound in the musical community even before their first release of their single "Out Of The Black". While playing at the Glastonbury festival of 2013, Matt Helders, drummer for the Arctic Monkeys, was seen wearing a Royal Blood T-shirt. Later, in 2014, Royal Blood was able to play at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. Earlier in 2015, Royal Blood won at the BRIT Awards in London for best British group. Royal Blood is going to be playing locally in San Francisco on 11th street at Slim’s on April 14th and 15th. You should definitely go check them out and see them “live.”

PERSONAL TAKE: WHY WE SHOULD ATTEND CONCERTS By Cat Corrado
Music has taken a pivotal role in my life, and opened a new dimension to what I am capable to feel. A song can stir my emotions and conjure the most exciting or profoundly melancholic images. As the philosopher Nietzsche reminds us, “how little is to happiness! The Sound of a Bagpipe. Without music, life would be a mistake. The German imagines even God sings songs”. And, perhaps that is why music has become my religion. I can’t pinpoint the moment when this passion began to grow, but I can see how over the years it has developed from an instinctive need to sing along a catchy tune, to a more scrupulous learning and discerning process of its components: music, musician and performance. Each will determine a certain mood, which I can control when I choose the song to listen to, in the same way one would select a blend of tealeaves to relax or wake up, to fall asleep or dream. But, I also learned that the way music is recorded could drastically affect its flavor. To appreciate this, one must attend a concert. At a live performance, the same song I had heard repeatedly on the record, takes a new life. 10

There are noises, dissonances and even mistakes that add to the texture of music, which in the recording studio are diligently edited by sound engineering; there is an uncontrolled rhythm that moves notes faster or slower, defying the fixed metronome that in a studio holds musicians to a squared tempo; there is the energy of musicians performing together, allowing the voices of their instruments to converse, laugh and curse at one another, free from the trap of separate recording-tracks that imprison each instrument, for sake of clean sound. At a concert, music is unrestrained; it leaps from the stage without the safety net of sophisticated sound software, and allows us to partake in the excitement of the acrobats. Musicians tune it with the audience, with the applause, with fans whispering or screaming lyrics until they lose their voice. At a concert we have a chance to hear music as it happens, not as it once did. (continued ) 11

At a concert, I –myself-record the music; I record it with my heart and soul, as there will not be a way to playback the same emotions, if not through the memory I retain. My ears are still buzzing from the loud sound and noise of each theater, stadium and hall where I danced and sang along, where in many ways I performed the music I love, as I spontaneously did when I first began to enjoy music, and instinctively sang along a catchy tune.

The Hills Are Alive...With the Sound of Hip Hop? By Sebastian Johnson Unbeknownst to most foreigners, over the past 3 decades hip hop has been steadily growing in popularity in Sweden. The origins are not well known, as it was hardly documented and barely known. What is known is that it was inspired by American hip hop, and so all of the original songs were in English. This was in the early 80’s and at this point Swedish hip hop was still building its identity, and was the same as American hip hop, but in 1989 MC Tim made the first major song in the Swedish language, Jag Är Def, and after that song Just D, a three person rap group, decided to start doing their songs in Swedish in order to appeal to a larger audience in Sweden. From this point on the foreign influence on the Swedish hip hop/rap scene was changing; instead of the USA being the exclusive influence, the various immigrant communities in Sweden were completely changing how the music sounded. Scandinavia is known for being 14
very liberal in its domestic and foreign policy by US standards, and Sweden specifically is no exception especially in its policy on immigration. This has brought many immigrant communities to Sweden, and to quote Swedish rapper Adam Tensta, born to Gambian immigrants, “Every burb the same man / and we got every color / we all the same man / at least to them we are / we all immigrants.� One of the most prominent Swedish immigrant communities is the Swedish Serbs, and with their consistent flow into Sweden, they changed the language itself. A sociolect commonly spoken in various immigrant communities known as Rinkeby Swedish takes a lot of influence from Serbian, and Arabic. Rinkeby Swedish is commonly used in Swedish hip hop and rap songs. An extremely popular duo who show this new immigrant influence on Swedish hip hop and rap is Ison och Fille. Ison was born in the US and moved to a Stockholm suburb when he was 5, and Fille was born in Venezuela and also moved to a Stockholm suburb when he was 5. Their music generally is related to what it is like to be in the suburb communities where many immigrants live, and they’ve been making music since the point when rap in Swedish got more popular, and have really spearheaded the music. Swedish Hip Hop? Continued...
An interesting part of all of this music is instead of talking about disdain for the government, or the country, it generally rather invokes a sense of nationality, and is about how everyone is the same no matter what their background is, which to me is an extremely Swedish concept. While of course this is talked about all over the world, you can see by viewing Swedish policies and Sweden’s overall culture that this is more than a just talked about idea, but an ever-present practice in Sweden. As Sweden deviates from America politically, its hip hop and rap music has too, even though their pop music is becoming just like the US’s and is trying to appeal to the US. Swedish hip hop and rap have always been directly influenced by Sweden’s culture, no matter what else is going on with Sweden’s music, which is why I believe Swedish rap and hip hop will endure.

Boy Band: An all-male vocal group in any pop genre. Most don't play instruments. Girl Band: An all-female vocal group in any pop genre. Most don’t play instruments.

In my opinion, two of the things that define a band is their music and their personas. First, let’s talk about music. Boy bands are known for having catchy hits such as “Bye Bye Bye” (N’SYNC) and “What Makes You Beautiful” (One Direction). Boy bands will often write their music about love, heartbreak, and partying. They also write songs that are catchy, and that people can dance to, and that’s usually what gets them such a big fan base. On the other hand, while girl band’s songs are also catchy and danceable, they usually also have messages, even if it isn’t intended. For instance, Destiny’s Child. Their song “Survivor” talks about how her ex-boyfriend underestimated her and thought she was going to fall apart when they broke up. However, she stayed strong and showed that she doesn’t need a man to survive. Most girl band songs talk about things such as being independent, staying true to yourself, and having standards for relationships instead of letting yourself be pushed around. Even if girl bands don’t have as many hits, when a band gets a hit the song sticks with you.

Girl vs. Boy Bands Continued... Persona:
Personas are the second thing that defines a band, other than music. Boy bands often have different personas for each member. One is the bad boy, one is the shy kid, and one is the partier, and so on. Personas change from band to band. However, some of the band member’s personas are based off of their actual personalities. One newer band with a memorable persona is 5 Seconds of Summer. Their persona (as I’ve interpreted through their music and interviews and such) is that they’re the rebel-bad-boy band that are secretly really sensitive, as shown through their hit song “Amnesia”. However, I feel like a lot of boy bands' personas are the same. Girl bands often do the same things with their personas, and one particularly memorable band with some memorable personas is the Spice Girls. They literally created their stage names after their personas, with names such as “Baby Spice”, “Scary Spice”, and “Sporty Spice”. The five of them have very varied personas, and that’s part of what got them famous. Girl Band personas are very varied and I think that no two bands are alike. 22
Fan Base:
Let’s take a look at boy bands first. Boy bands are notorious for having fan bases full of screaming teenage girls so desperate to meet them that they will do anything. They mob the bands wherever they go, climb on top of their cars and even try to propose to them. They stay up for hours sleeping in tents just to see them or buy concert tickets. Almost every single boy band owes it to their fan base because that’s the reason they become popular. Now girl bands. Now I love a feminist girl band as much as the next person but I have to admit; their fan bases aren’t as notorious as boy bands. Of course they may be just as enthusiastic and crazy as those fans of boy bands, they just aren’t as known for those types of things as boy bands' fan bases.

Girl vs. Boy Bands Continued...
I think that girl bands are better than boy bands for a few reasons. First, most of their songs have positive messages, whereas most boy band songs are generic and don’t really have a lot of meaning behind them. Second, since girl bands are a lot harder to come by, they tend to have a lot more originality than boy bands. Lastly, girl bands' fan bases aren’t known to be as crazy and obsessive as boy bands. Even though I like girl bands more than boy bands, that doesn’t mean I’m not a fan of them either. I am pretty neutral about the subject. I’m not a crazy fan, but I don’t hate their guts either. But whether you like to admit it or not, we have all listened to a boy and girl band at one point or another. For some people it’s a guilty pleasure but for some it’s a ritual. I myself have listened to a couple songs by N’SYNC and One Direction, but I don’t listen to them religiously. So my final point is that whether we like it or not boy bands and girl bands are a part of our lives, and of the music industry, and will continue to be for a while.

A PLACE REMEMBERED: On the Corner of Turk and Hyde By Michael Schmeltzer
Nowadays, upon the corner of Turk and Hyde in the upper Tenderloin, there is a parking lot. A black fence surrounds the perimeter of the parking lot. Cars ranging from Toyotas to Volkswagens rest in the miniscule area. Outside of the gated square, people attempt to sell their worn-out goods with disparity. Although it may not seem like it at the moment, that parking lot used to be the home to a prominent jazz club. In 1949, the Blackhawk opened its doors in the upper Tenderloin district of San Francisco and was owned by Guido Caccienti, Johnny Noga, and Helen Noga. The club offered adolescents the opportunity to listen to jazz music for free by putting a ‘chicken wire’ to separate the underage and those of age. Later on, the club would get in trouble with the police for this act because many worried that the older males would take advantage of the younger females.

Black Hawk Down Continued...
By the 1950’s, the Blackhawk had evolved into one of San Francisco’s premier jazz clubs. Many prominent musicians flocked to the venue to perform and record. In 1951, the San Francisco based Dave Brubeck Quartet was formed. The group originally included Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Bob Bates, and Joe Dodge. The jazz quartet would make the Blackhawk their home. In 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet released their single, ‘Take Five’. The instrumental piece became popular due to its catchy saxophone and gratifying drum solo. ‘Take Five’ would eventually grow to become one of the most influential songs in the history of jazz. In addition to the Dave Brubeck Quartet, artists such as Miles Davis and Cal Tjader also played at the Blackhawk. On April 21 & 22 of 1961, the Miles Davis Quintet recorded what would become In Person Friday and
Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, Complete. Columbia Records released
material from the performance in 1961, but the complete sets did not become commercially available until Sony Records digitally released a mastering of the collection. Davis composed some of the most influential music of the 20th century, including the song, ‘So What’. The music of 26
Miles Davis was often innovative, with his album Kind of Blue being noted as one of the greatest albums ever by Rolling Stone magazine. Cal Tjader, a latin-jazz musician, recorded Saturday/Sunday
Night At The Blackhawk, San Francisco. The record was released in
1962 by Verve Records. Cal Tjader was one of the most successful non-Latino Latin musicians. He grew up in San Mateo County, which is located just south of San Francisco. The Carl Tjader Trio was the first jazz group to take the stage at the Blackhawk. Their music was considered to be jazz with Cuban-influences. By the 1960’s, the influence of Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Cal Tjader, and others did not stay with the Blackhawk. The jazz scene in San Francisco moved to North Beach due the impressive reputation of entertainment in the area. By 1963, the Blackhawk had shut down. Today, the area where the old jazz club once rested continues to be a parking lot. However, near all the Toyotas and Volkswagens, there lies a plaque commemorating the significance of the Blackhawk. The once premier jazz club of San Francisco is no longer, although it is still remembered for its impact on the culture of San Francisco. 27
“Where did you get your name from?� A SHORT ANALYSIS ON BAND NAMES By Nina Solinas "Where did you get your name from?" is the interview question most bands and artists dread, some bands are so inspired by their favorite artists that they not only try to emulate them, but actually named themselves after them.
Panic! At the Disco
They may have one of the oddest names in music right now but its story of origin isn't that unusual. It actually comes from The Smiths' 'Panic'. Quite dull really. I assume Psychedelic Horesh*t got their name in an equally noninteresting way. Oh, and before you ask there was never an exclamation in the song title.
Childish Gambino
Donald Glover used a Wu-Tang Clan name generator in his sophomore year of college at NYU; inputting his real name and coming up with Childish Gambino. 28
Elvis Depressedly
The alter ego persona of Mat Cothran, has absolutely nothing to do with Elvis Presley. In an interview he explains this persona, “The people here are psychotic, self-obsessed, murderers, addicts, wild animals. Elvis is a persona. It’s something to escape into away from the expectations people have on Coma Cinema and me. It’s a place I can be honest because not as many people listen to it as my other projects.”
Dandy Warhols
Simply put, the name is a word play on famous artist, Andy Warhol, known for painting soup cans. A “dandy,” is a fancy man of the 18th Century. Back in 2005, Globe writer James Parker reviewed the Portland-based band's show at the Paradise Rock Club and said their music was "spangled, surging trance-pop in four-minute slices, all a-shimmer with ironic appreciation of its own redundancy." The band will release its sixth album on Aug 19. continued-29
Pink Floyd
Originally called The Tea Set, the members of this iconic band showed up at a gig one night to discover that there was already another band on the roster who had already called dibs. Thinking quick, Syd Barrett mixed the names of two blues musicians he loved, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, to rename the band ‘The Pink Floyd Sound,’ and then later shortened the name to Pink Floyd.
A-ha
The origin of the name "A-ha" comes from a title that member Pål Waaktaar contemplated giving to a song. Morten Harket was looking through Waaktaar's notebook and came across the name "a-ha". He liked it and said, "That's a great name. That's what we should call ourselves". After checking dictionaries in several languages, they found out that a-ha was an international way of expressing recognition, with positive connotations. It was short, easy to say, and unusual.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
After Leonard Skinner a gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida who was notorious for strictly enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair. 30
Garbage
Either lead singer Shirley Manson's father yelled down to the band at one of their basement practice sessions, "Play more quietly - you sound like garbage" or from a friend of drummer Butch Vig, who said "This stuff sounds like garbage!"
Twenty One Pilots
Lead signer Tyler Joseph got the name from studying the play "All My Sons" by Arthur Miller in a theatre class. The play is set in World War II, the main character finds that parts to various planes are faulty but lets them fly anyway, resulting in the deaths of 21 pilots.
The Beatles
Original bassist came up with the Beetles in 1960, a play on Buddy Holy’s Crickets. John Lennon altered the spelling to Beatals before meeting 19 year old poet Royston Ellis who suggested Beatles as a double play on poetry and beat music. 31
A Brief History of Alternative Rock By Price Ohmer
In February of 1981, a 14-year-old boy sat in his room in Seattle, picking out the opening chords to “Stairway to Heaven” on a used guitar he received for his birthday. Ten years later, when his band Nirvana released their second album, it flew to the top of the top of the charts, forever changing how mainstream musicians and producers would think about rock music (Erlewine). Alternative Music was coined as a term “in the 1980s to describe punk-rock inspired bands on independent record labels who did not fit into the mainstream genres of the time,” (Alternative). Although Kurt Cobain and Nirvana are often thought about as the “flagship” of alternative rock and grunge music, the entire concept of music being produced outside of the “mainstream” can be traced all the way back to the punk rockers of the 70s. The Velvet Underground got their start in underground venues in New York City during the mid-60s. Their style was reminiscent of mainstream rock groups that were popular during the same time, but there was something unique, almost distorted about their music. The band continued 32
releasing music for the next 10 years, replacing members along the way. Although The Velvet Underground received very little mainstream coverage during their tenure as a group, they had a significant influence over music within the underground rock scene and were instrumental in the start-up of the punk rock movement. Their influence was in large part to the fact that their music “espoused a bleakness and primitivism that would inspire alienated singers and songwriters of future generations” (Unterberger) and their timely unpopularity due to their content matter being too extreme to air on radio stations or play in clubs. The Velvet Underground stopped releasing tracks in the 1970s and Nirvana got their start in 1989, so what happened in between? Well, in the late 70s and 80s, British punk rockers started “softening” the genre to make it more palatable for the mainstream. The bands who perfected this style, like The Cure and R.E.M., are still popular today (Erlewine). But somewhere along the way, audiences grew tired of the forced perfection of this new style. So when Nirvana broke out in Seattle with their “distorted guitars” and “general discontent” (Hunter), the music world went wild. Nirvana’s newly discovered sound was dubbed “grunge” and began to spread(con't)33
throughout the world. Although Nirvana was hugely popular between ’89 and ‘93 their fame seemed to fizzle with front-man Cobain’s suicide in ’94. So where do we go from here? While other Seattle-based grunge bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains continued on with their semipopularity, and grunge continued into the 21st century where it delineated, it’s now time to look over to a different part of the world: France. While all of this punk and alternative evolution was taking place in the U.S. and Britain, France was producing a new style of disco, called House music. At this point, you might be confused as to why I’m introducing a completely different genre with completely different origins now, because it is confusing. However, looking at the evolution of Alternative rock to Indie rock, you cannot ignore the role that electronic music played in it. Phoenix, one of the earlier Indie rock bands, started in France in the mid-90s. They were influenced by house artists like Daft Punk, causing their earlier music to have a “similar approach to 70s disco,” (Potts). As they kept playing through the 90s and early 21st century, their music style began to take on more of the styles of The Cure and other late 80s bands, incorporating a blend of 34
electronic synth music and live instrumental that was incredibly unique at the time. Their breakout finally came in 2009, when their 4th album went viral. To me, Phoenix is the culmination of current alternative rock in terms of inspiration. The styles that they embody have become widely popular thanks to bands like Vampire Weekend and Foster the People, but, at least in my mind, they’ll always be The Indie Alternative band. Although bands Phoenix focus intently on incorporating the synth styles of House into their Rock, many bands such as The Strokes have been keen on sticking with the 4-5 man analogue outfit (Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, Vocals, and perhaps Keyboard) that was championed by countless Rock and Alt Rock pioneers before them. Thus far, we’ve explored the styles of rock music through the late 20th and early 21st centuries and how different styles have been popularized by multiple bands of multiple geographic origins, but writing can only take you so far. I’ve written this because of the importance that this specific style of music has in my life, and the emotional connection I have with it. I want everyone to experience this music for themselves. Listen to Nirvana, and Phoenix, and The Velvet Underground and listen for the influences and subtleties that tie this genre together. And have fun with it. 35
Who's on top?: HowKids Influence the Top 100 By Nori Patterson You listen to the radio and your favorite song comes on. Only it isn’t the same. Phrases are bleeped out and words are changed. Or maybe the first time you hear a song is the censored radio version and not the six minute explicit edition. Why? Kids. Everything has to be kidfriendly because they are a part of the target audience. A large amount of artists and songs that end up in the top 100 are there because of kids, and probably more specifically teenage fan girls (and the occasional guy). Artists like Justin Bieber became well known because of their YouTube presence and attractiveness to young girls. Sure, they might be talented, but being cute makes them accessible. Other artists like Miley Cyrus became popular after their presence on kid shows and as they grew up so did their listeners. The same people who listened to Miley back then are the people who listen to her now, plus younger audiences who’ve probably at least heard of her former alter ego Hannah Montana. 36
Kids are a large reason why certain songs and artists become big, therefore influencing others. I guess in a way I’m saying a lot of us have the same music taste as a 12-year-old girl, but we really don’t have a choice. As a kid I listened to artists like the Jonas brothers and Hannah Montana, better known as Miley Cyrus. As I grew up, so did they. The Jonas Brothers split up and Nick became a solo artist and Miley Cyrus ditched her blonde wig and decided to twerk with teddy bears and smoke weed. Way back when they were singing about the year 3000 and how nobody’s perfect. Growing up listening to a celebrity who’s about the same age as you, you get to experience the changes in that artist’s music. An artist’s work should reflect who they are. Practically everyone who grew up watching Selena Gomez on Wizards of Waverly Place can legally buy cigarettes or at least drive a car, so it would be awkward if she was singing about some middle school drama when she’s old enough to be in college. Other artists such as Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande came later on, and their primary audience can be split between kids born in the late 90s’ and Y2K kids. Sure, Ariana Grande started off on Broadway, but she didn’t make it big until she was on the Nickelodeon show Victorious. Everyone knew that she was

more vocally gifted than the show’s leading lady Victoria Justice, so it was only a matter of time before she made it to the radio. Grande’s success can be credited to her character’s character on Victorious and of course her voice, but it seems somewhat doubtful that she could have a #1 single with grammatically incorrect lyrics like “now that I’ve become who I really are”. Obviously some people chose to look past that and enjoy their favorite wild, artificial red head from one of their favorite shows making it big. In the end, the childhood television success of singers such as Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande boosted their careers and helped them make it into at least the top 100 song and artist charts. There are probably a few people out there who still have Kidz Bop CDs, but are a little too old for them. From its start in 2000, Kidz Bop has sold over 15 million albums, is listed as #32 on Billboard’s top 100 artists about others such as Sia and Kayne West, and has two albums on Billboard’s top 200 albums (#17 and #46). How they managed to rate above Mark Ronson’s Uptown Special and
Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 isn’t much of a surprise. Kidz Bop is safe for parents to

play in the car with cleaner and kidfriendly lyrics as opposed to lyrics about sex and alcohol. When it comes to actual content, Kidz Bop doesn’t compare. With each song’s clashing harmonies with the pre-pubescent voices of 10-year-olds, it seems practically impossible that a Kidz Bop song will ever be #1. Some of you probably remember 14year-old singing sensation Justin Bieber. He had the power to make millions of girls swoon with the help of his mentor, Usher. Well, now that kid is all grown up. While Bieber might only be #65 on Billboard’s top 100 artists at the moment, Bieber has become an icon and created a sort of revolution for young girls. The popular British boy band One Direction has been compared to five Bieber clones. What some people may remember is Bieber’s start on YouTube. Justin Bieber was the teen heartthrob for girls born in the late 90s’, but now a new singing sensation named MattyB has arrived for the younger generations. Known by his YouTube username MattyBRaps, 12-year-old Matthew Morris has a fan base of over 3 million subscribers and over 1 billion total views. His cover version of OutKast’s Ms. Jackson has over 38 million views while the original only has 32 million. It seems like there is another Bieber in the making.

Success in the music business has been essentially foreseen because of kids and who is popular at the time. Based on many factors, kid actors and YouTube sensations can grow up and be in the top ten. Everything is geared towards being accessible to kids. If they don’t like the song, it won’t succeed. Kids are taking over the charts. They are the judges who get to decide how popular a song and an artist gets by telling their friends to check out a cute 14-year old drummer/singer from Canada and telling their parents to buy them the soundtrack from Frozen. People say that kids are the future leaders, but in the music industry they are the present dictators who choose what’s hot and what’s not. The future of music is in their hands, which doesn’t seem like a good thing at all.

Anyone who knows about American culture would know who the Grateful Dead is. Maybe they know their music. And maybe they listen to it. But for some, it wasn’t only music; it was a lifestyle. Only a Deadhead, a diehard Grateful Dead listener, would join the parking lot scene; a utopia of hippies that followed the tour, creating their own traveling town that was committed to following the Dead. To imagine this picture a massive parking lot covered with tents, spray painted vans and rainbow buses. Even though the music is what united families and friends at first, tie dye and good energy were signs of an entire culture sparking. The Deadhead community was a paradise for someone looking to be around peace and happiness. The same people would show up at each show. Because of this, many great friendships were made. Sometimes, people would pull out a guitar and

cover a Grateful Dead song. Some people I know, including my parents, have met their closest friends on tours and shows. One of my parents’ friends said that while there, she met so many people of the same mindset, and they were closer than friends from high school. Meeting people on tour was a real experience in many ways. The crowd was typically between young adults and thirty-year-olds. Stacia, who is close with my parents because of the Grateful Dead, says that the friends she made while dancing at shows and the Parking Lot are better than her friends from high school. “We all had a similar mindset. They were all funny, witty, and amazing to be around,” she told me. “It wasn’t only the band. The energy just blows your mind. The audience was so excited.” One beloved story about the beautiful people in the crowds I’ve heard more than a few times came from my mom. There was a night that she and her good friend wanted tickets for the show at the Kaiser Center in Oakland. To get tickets, they walked around outside the stadium singing a folk song about spirituality and the universe. After a while, a woman and her friend came up to them. “I love hearing you guys sing,” she said. “Come on in. You 42
both are beautiful people. You can really sing.” My mom and her friend went and enjoyed the show. Finally, sometime later, my mom ran into the same woman in the food line at a women’s spirituality retreat. They freaked out, screamed, and hugged. The two haven’t kept in touch lately, but the story was unforgettable for her. Another thing that made the experience unique was the band products. When you would buy something at a Grateful Dead show, it was probably going to be made from a Parking Lot hippie rather than official products. All of it was made by Deadheads themselves, usually by hand. People sold homemade food, T-shirts, tie dye, and even fabrics and beaded items from Guatemala. At first, the band gear was made for the love of the music and people did it just for extra support. However, once more people started to get into it they sold their products for mostly profit, even though nobody could become rich selling their shirts at a Grateful Dead concert. There was one person I heard of who had a small tie dye shirt business. At one show, he managed to sell 10,000 shirts. “It was like he ran a small factory,” my dad said. He had multiple washing machines and about five employees.

Of course, he didn’t make as much money as he spent. But after a while he sold to stores and even clothing lines. The community was based around the beliefs that love, peace and happiness are important parts of life. It was easy to feel like you were in the happiest place on Earth, maybe because you really were. However, even a place like this had a dark side. Sometimes, you would have to be careful. Not everyone was a happy hippie like they claimed to be, but instead a predator in disguise. One wrong move could get you stuck with men who liked to creep on young girls. “Give me a hug, sister,” they would say. It was often hard to tell whether or not someone was safe. “You really had to trust your judgement,” said Stacia. Another thing to watch out for were drugs. Most people tried them, and more did them on a regular basis. Usually it was harmless, but some got really involved. You can easily assume that it wrecked a lot of people’s health. But for some, it wasn’t necessarily their health. If you got too involved with dealing, it was almost too easy to get in trouble with the law. While not all their songs were about drugs, some of the music 44
related to the culture because of the lyrics about psychedelics. In Scarlet Begonias (my personal favorite), Jerry Garcia sings about seeing a beautiful, unique girl but she is simply a hallucination. One of my favorite lyrics, “Sky was yellow and the sun was blue”, describes an epic and colorful landscape that you can only see in dreams. Most of all, though, the song describes the type of person that would be in the Grateful Dead crowd. The mood, lyrics and meanings of the music had a large influence on the subculture the band helped create. However, not all the songs had lyrics about drugs or hallucinations. Box of Rain, a song that named one of their tours, about how everyone feels pain sometimes and it’s natural to not always be happy. One of my favorite lyrics, “A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through”, describe how time is the best remedy for pain. The song was famous for what is known as the Box of Rain tour. The band played the gentle, heartwarming song in 1972-73, but after that it disappeared from their sets. Finally, it was played every single show on the ’86 tour, which was then named after the song. Once they finally played it, it was described as amazing. The song was also the last that the Grateful Dead played before beloved lead singer and guitarist, Jerry Garcia, passed away. continued -45

Word spread quickly after Jerry died. It was a tragic ending for many flower children, music lovers, and Deadheads. In the Bay Area, San Francisco was the place where most people went to mourn. “We all kind of migrated to the Haight-Ashbury district,” Stacia said. “It was intense and sad.” Haight Street, the heart of the hippie counter culture movement, was where Jerry and other band members once lived in a small house. A couple weeks later, 20,000 Deadheads showed up in Golden Gate Park for his official memorial service. The band tried to replace him with members of other jam bands, including Bob Weir’s band, Rat Dogs. They sounded nice, but no one could replace Jerry. There was also the band that came after the Dead, Phish. Their style was similar. But still, seeing them in concert was not the same. Needless to say, Jerry and the rest of the band will never be forgotten. “It was really fun,” Stacia told me. “And it’s miraculous we all lived.” Music brings people together like nothing else. though, was something that made a big and inseparable family. It is how my parents met the best friends that brought them together. It is the 46
reason why I was born into this happy family. Hearing their music has given me memories that will never be replaced, just like their music. And for all this, I have got to say I am incredibly grateful.
