DEEPER LEARNING INITIATIVES Bayside Academy is committed to increasing opportunities for student-driven learning experiences to encourage lifelong learning. Bayside’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) schedule is a hybrid schedule that combines three days of traditional shorter periods with two days of longer 90-minute periods. The purpose is to provide additional time for dynamic learning opportunities: reflection, exploration, differentiation, and formative performance tasks. The instruction on these days targets free-flowing learning skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. DOK days create an opportunity to facilitate extended activities such as projects, group work, class debates and discussions, feedback and reflection, and problem-solving investigations.
Civic Engagement: Historical Perspectives is a learning incubator that allows purposeful, self-driven, high-achieving students to pursue an individualized, focused educational experience coordinated with a faculty mentor or mentors. Students may design academic, service-based, or entrepreneurial projects. Students develop passion, purpose, and leadership through immersive real-world learning.
Understanding the Southern Mystique aims to dissect, dismantle, and ultimately reconstruct an understanding of regional identity in order to answer one question: What is the South? The course guides students to explore Southern identity and discover the interconnection between music, film, art, race relations, economics, psychology, environmental science, politics, and the history of the region. Using a cross-curricular and projectbased approach, students are challenged to see farther, think more reflectively and deeply, and drive their learning. Select students may substitute this course for American History.

COVID-19
Bayside Academy transitioned to virtual learning in March of 2020. The Upper School maintained the published grading scale and all graduation requirements. AP students successfully submitted 98% of their tests to the College Board. When Bayside went virtual in March, the bulk of extracurriculars and athletics went dormant (exceptions were Admiral TV, yearbook, literary magazine, and newspaper). For the (2020-2021) school year, extracurricular and athletic involvements will be assessed regularly for viability and be available as possible. Plans for (2020-2021) include multiple options for toggling from in-person to hybrid to virtual educational models as needed. This can vary by grade level or division or may encompass the entire campus. Needs will be determined by the administration; the Bayside Medical Advisory Task Force; and local, state, and national government and health agencies. At the beginning of the school year, approximately 1% of students in grades 9-12 elected to use a virtual education platform. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Students are required to accumulate a minimum of 23 units of credit in grades 9-12 in order to graduate. Requirements by discipline and minimum units for graduating are shown below. Algebra and/or Geometry may be taken in grades 7 and 8, but classes do not earn high school credit. High school students must complete four years in advanced mathematics. All courses are college preparatory. Courses marked as advanced are honors in nature. AP courses are available and are enrollment driven. It is strongly recommended that a student take no more than three AP courses in one year. A student taking any AP course is required to take the AP exam. A special program exists throughout the school for students who have diagnosed learning disabilities/ attention deficit disorders, etc. The Academic Coaching Center for Excellence (ACCE) Program serves the needs of LD/ ADHD students. Individual exemptions to graduation requirements may be made for students with documented special needs. Any exception to the required program must be approved by the administration. GRADING Bayside uses the scale listed. Grades earned prior to entry in the ninth grade are not calculated in the GPA. The grading scale appears on the transcript. O, S, N, and F grades are not calculated in the GPA. The numerical grades that are reported are unweighted. Both weighted and unweighted GPAs are calculated and recorded on the transcript. All numerical grades are used in calculating the GPA. In determining the weighted GPA, A’s, B’s and C’s in AP courses are weighted on a 4.0 scale by a 1.0 factor. All other advanced courses are weighted by a 0.5 factor. In the GPA calculation for transfer students, no additional weight is given for students who were enrolled in traditional college prep classes; no accommodation is made for grades labeled +/–, and Bayside’s weighting system is applied to the Bayside cumulative GPA. Bayside Academy reports grades on a semester basis. Students are not ranked. Bell ringers are the two sophomores with the highest GPAs; marshals are the four juniors with the highest GPAs.

Bayside Academy is a college preparatory school for grades PK3 through 12 (approximately 778 students, 256 in grades 9-12). Founded as St. James Episcopal Day School by Baldwin County families seeking a challenging academic environment for their children, Bayside Academy opened the doors to its very first students on September 8, 1970, with classes from kindergarten through 8th grade. David M. Smith was headmaster, and John A. Robertson was chairman of the Board of Directors. On September 8, 2020, Bayside Academy celebrated its 50th anniversary. Situated on an oak-shaded bluff overlooking Mobile Bay, Bayside’s 22-acre campus originally was settled in 1837 by a retired sea captain. The Greek revival mansion on the property served as a private residence, withstood the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay, and later served as a hotel. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart bought the property in the 1940s and used the facility as a boarding school. The original structure, the heart of the campus, serves as Bayside’s Administrative Complex. Bayside is accredited by the AdvanceED through the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). The school is a member of SAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA), and other professional organizations. Bayside competes at the Class 3A level of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field compete at the Class 4A level; Girls Volleyball competes at the Class 5A level). Admission is selective and based on academic ability, willingness to work, and potential for growth. The school serves a diverse student population and regularly enrolls a number of international students. Financial aid is available for students with demonstrated need and typically is awarded for students in grades 7 and above. Qualified applicants will be considered for acceptance without regard to race, creed, sex, or national/ethnic origin.
COLLEGE VISITS
COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVE VISITS
Students are encouraged to make individual college visits in order to facilitate successful college selection. In order for these visits to be considered as excused absences, students and parents must plan these trips at least one week in advance. Students are encouraged to visit with the college admissions officers who visit Bayside. Students and parents are also encouraged to participate in all available college fairs and school-sponsored programs.
The school will make every effort to schedule a visit around the travel schedule of the admissions officer. A calendar listing scheduled visits is published for students, parents, and faculty. The College Counseling Office is located in the Administrative Complex.

Directions from Mobile Regional Airport: Exit left from the airport heading east on Airport Blvd. Continue for 7 miles and merge onto I-65 South. Merge left onto I-10 toward Florida. Continue through the tunnel and across Mobile Bay and take Exit 35, U.S. 90/U.S. 98. Turn right onto Hwy. 98 East and continue for 4.5 miles. Turn right onto Hwy. 64. At the end of the street, turn left onto Main Street. Turn right onto Dryer Avenue and continue to the end of the street. This will dead-end into the Bayside Academy campus.
