Trending Topics: Millennials Looking for Pooch-Perfect Homes BY SABRINA LAPOINTE The days of the doghouse in the back yard are long gone. Well, maybe they’re still here, but decking out the doghouse isn’t the only thing homeowners are doing for their pets nowadays.

Helping clients find the home of their dreams has changed. For many, that dream now includes features for their furry (or sometimes not-so-furry) friends. Brushing up on all the latest pet-friendly home trends may just help you lead more clients to their dream home. According to the 2019 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report by the National Association of Realtors®, millennials made up the largest share of home buyers at 37 percent. Older millennials at 26 percent and younger millennials at 11 percent of the share of homebuyers. Not only are millennials making up the majority of the buyer pool, but they also happen to be leading the way in pet ownership. Given this information, it’s a no-brainer to become wellversed in what pets need in homes. For many millennials, their animal is much more than just a pet, some would argue they are like their first-born child. When considering what they want in a home, millennials will keep their furry-friend top of mind. Avocado toast and snapchat filters, step aside. There’s a new millennial trend in town and it’s pet-friendly homes. Here are just a couple of features millennials in the market will be on the look-out for.

1. A fully fenced-in backyard Especially for us up in Massachusetts where winters can be harsh, having a fenced-in yard is key when it comes to exercising your pet. Walking your dog isn’t always practical with New England winters, so it’s important to have that space for your pet to burn off energy. 6

2. Proximity to dog parks and walking paths While exercising your pet is a top priority, so is socializing your pet. Many pet owners want to make sure their dog gets exposure to other dogs and has the opportunity to play.
