Antonyms

Synonyms are words that have meanings similar to one another. Antonyms are words that mean the opposite of another word. There are different types of Antonyms: 1. Complementary and Binary pairs - are absolute opposite of the other word, and there is no room for confusion (dead or alive) 2. Gradable antonyms - are generally at opposite ends of a scale (ugly & beautiful). 3. Reverse or relational antonyms - known by their reverse relationship to each other (parent & offspring) 4. Add a Prefix Antonym – eg ‘dis’ or ‘un’ will form (able & unable, familiar & unfamiliar)

Importance of Antonyms and Synonyms.

 assists one to write creatively when words with opposite relationship are used.  allows one to use different terms to describe something or a phenomenon effectively.  enables one to show a change or difference in terms.
