Firstly, I would like to say thank you! Thank you to each and every one of you for the work that you do, in our local schools, for our students, and with our families. I am both honored and excited to be called to the role of Interim Director Evangelisation Broken Bay. It is an exciting opportunity to work alongside the EBB team, implementing Bishop Anthony’s six key priorities through activating Stage Three of the One in Christ Pastoral Mission I have been involved in the Broken Bay Diocese for nearly all of my life! I began working in the Diocese of Broken Bay in 1992, as a teacher, at St Agatha’s, Pennant Hills before moving to the Central Coast in 1995 to teach in several of the Diocesan primary schools in the area In 2013, I accepted a position at Catholic Schools Broken Bay in the Student Achievement team, supporting the pastoral care and wellbeing needs of students across the Diocese As part of the 35th Anniversary of our Diocese, Bishop Anthony invited the community of the church on the Central Coast to journey forward together as pilgrims and missionaries through an innovative and exciting project As many of you may know, this project was the Pastoral Discernment Central Coast Project
As project facilitator of this project, I had the fortunate opportunity to be able to collaborate and hear from the people of the Central Coast. The project involved listening and dialoguing, with opportunities for the community to share wisdom, experiences, and insights, enabling us to better understand how to ensure a sustainable and thriving community. I am confident that the actions borne from this discernment opportunity will bear fruit for generations to come.

I often refer to Catechists as Saints of our time holy people who spread the Good News of the Kingdom of God in abundance through their work in public schools. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide you and bless you as you go about your holy work. God bless,
Alison
As Catholics, we look to the saints as examples of lives well lived in the faith It may provide comfort to know that such holy people shared some of the same struggles, doubts and hardships as we do these days
This term in Connections, we are looking at some of the Saints in the Walking with Jesus curriculum The most famous Saint in the Church of course is Mary, the Mother of Jesus, who has many feast days across the liturgical year The saints are such an important part of our Catholic tradition, and it is important that we teach the children about some of our saints In this edition of Connections, we have included some additional activities about the saints which are authorised for use in SRE classes
The saints are made up of a diverse group of people with varied backgrounds and stories They include martyrs, kings and queens, missionaries, theologians, popes, parents, sisters, brothers and priests and everyday people who have dedicated their lives to the service of others and to the spread of the Gospel. Religious and non religious people have found inspiration from their lives, e.g, those who have devoted themselves to the service of the poor, like St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, St Mother Teresa of Kolkata and St Vincent de Paul. Martyrs are saints who were persecuted for their faith, such as St Stephen (the first martyr), who showed extraordinary forgiveness of those who stoned him. Many saints are revered for their humility, e.g., St Francis of Assisi and St Therese of Lisieux. Others were brilliant writers and thinkers who shaped Western thought for centuries, like St Thomas Aquinas and St Augustine Many saints have feast days observed by the Catholic Church in which their lives and contributions to the faith are formally celebrated Some saints are the patrons of certain occupations or causes, and these saints are often invoked to aid people in those professions or situations For example, St Matthew is the patron saint of accountants, St Jude is the patron saint of impossible or desperate causes, and many Catholics ask him to pray on their behalf to help resolve what seem to be impossible situations in their lives and St Anthony is the patron Saint of finding lost items Many Catholics take or are given a saint’s name when they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation A Confirmation saint is often seen as having a vested interest in fostering a young Catholic’s spiritual growth and is usually chosen because his or her life story inspires the Confirmation candidate.
The communion of Saints is a beautiful teaching of our Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church asks, “What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints?”(n 946) All the faithful form one body whether alive or deceased. This beautiful teaching provides great comfort to all of us and connects all the faithful in the Body of Christ. In his Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis speaks of “The saints next door”, reminding us that not all saints are already beatified and canonised and that “the Holy Spirit bestows holiness in abundance among God’s holy and faithful people” and that we should be inspired “spurred on ” by the signs of holiness that the Lord shows us through the humblest members of the people of God.
