David Jackson, Artistic Director BBC Cardiff Singer of the World

The singers this year are very exciting, and I am very proud to be Patron of this prestigious career-changing competition. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Patron

THE COMPETITION BBC Cardiff Singer of the World BBC Cardiff Singer of the World is a life-changing experience for twenty young singers at the start of their professional careers. Selected from hundreds of applicants across the globe, our finalists have a chance to perform in front of a jury of distinguished opera experts. The singers are accompanied by two world class orchestras – BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Thomas Søndergård and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra, conducted by Tomáš Hanus. The performances are broadcast across the BBC to audiences around the UK and beyond and the five strongest singers are selected to compete in the exhilarating final at St David’s Hall. The main prize winner, BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, is presented with the Cardiff Trophy and £15,000.

The Song Prize

The Audience Prize

Cardiff Sings!

The Song Prize puts our singers well and truly under the spotlight. Performing some of the most beautiful Lieder and art songs in the repertoire, the singers are accompanied by pianists Llyˆr Williams and Simon Lepper.

The Audience Prize is voted by our audiences and presented during the grand final. Winners receive The Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize, £2,500 and a crystal trophy. This prize is supported by Cardiff University School of Music.

In 2017, we are continuing with our series of fringe events across the city; throughout the week, audiences can experience a wider range of events throughout the city, from pre-concert talks to master classes, recitals and films. Full details will be released early in 2017 – keep an eye on our website for details. bbc.co.uk/cardiffsinger

The intimate recitals take place at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with a final at St David’s Hall. The winner receives the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize Trophy and £7,500.
