NPR RADIO STATION SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA
THIRD YEAR DESIGN
The interaction with radio is based in the auditory realm. This perception changes completely when it engages the public visually. Watching the workings of a radio station while listening to the programming creates a connection that is otherwise lost in its transmission. In this project, a dialogue takes place between the public, the users and the radio station. It provides a setting with which to engage in the radio programming in the visual and simultaneously in the auditory realm. This is only successful, though, if together the programmed areas create a seamless sense of space with which everyone can connect. The building skin becomes an iconic image, giving a face to radio. The skin reflects the nature of the transmission of radio and its technical roots. It creates transparency, allowing for a relation from inside to outside as the user experiences the project. The site presents both a design challenge and design opportunity. San Luis Creek run through the middle of the site. Instead of building over the creek, the program is divided into two buildings, creating open space that draws people through the project and provides public space for the city.

EASTERN MARKET LIBRARY WASHINGTON, D.C.
FOURTH YEAR DESIGN
Situated at an intersection created by the L’Enfant plan in Washington DC’s Eastern Market, this library seeks to blur boundaries created by residential and commercial districts. The site is on the edge of one of the parks created by the intersecting of diaganol streets. The library connects with the park space, creating an extension of the park as well as providing spaces within the library that reflect back on the park. The proximity to schools and public transportation (including the metro) allows the library to act as a node of activity and serve several demographics simultaneously. The form of the library tells a story of the journey one may take during a visit. Upon arrival at the grand reading room, the users can move up through the library defined by the solid form. Once they arrive at the top floor reading room the user is able to overlook the park which reinforces the connection of the spaces. The transparency of the reading room allows the library to reach back into the community and maintain the connection with the park and city.

TABLE The design of the table started as a conversation in stereotomy, the art of cutting shapes out of solids, and evolved into a excerise of folding. Taking a simple rectangle shape and folding opposite edges creates a dynamic, yet balanced shape. Dimensions: 18”H x 36”W x 18”D Material: Black Walnut Status: Unbuilt
BOOKSHELF The design of the bookshelf is a reinterpretation of what most consider a utilitarian piece of furniture. The bookshelf is broken into component parts and shifted in plane, which alternate as the bookshelf ascends. Dimensions: 84”H x 36”W x 12”D Material: Black Walnut Status: Unbuilt

The design is a simple parti consisting of an outer form wrapping the program. It introduces materials and scale so that it fits in with the bungalow style, the Broadmoor neighborhoods dominant housing typology. The ramp, contained within the outer form, introduces views of both the back and front yards as you move up it to the front door. The plan is a reflection of the shotgun house. A main hallway acts as a spine, connecting all the interior and exterior spaces efficiently. The gable roof geometry allows for vaulted ceilings throughout the majority of the house. The kitchen, dining and living room act as multi-use spaces. Two sets of French doors open to the covered front patio, extending the living space to the outdoors. The focus was on designing a house with a tight building envelope, materials that reflect the principles of LEED, a low maintenance yet attractive landscape and to introduce renewable energy to offset the use and cost of electricity. With a strict budget of $100,000, traditional framing materials and methods were used in a sustainable way. The efficient floor plan maximizes principles of passive cooling, namely stack and cross ventilation. Clerestories along the hallway evacuate the hot air while cross ventilation brings in cool air. Designing a sustainable house is more than choosing the right materials and approaches to design. Part of living sustainable lifestyle is not relying on fossil fuels to generate power for the house. Introducing renewable energy was an important part of the approach to this design. A 1kW photovoltaic system produces more than 85% of the energy needed in the house. By utilizing traditional methods of construction in a sustainable manner, overall construction costs could be reduced, affording the opportunity to use better quality materials. Additionally, replicable tax credits made an otherwise out of reach PV system affordable.

Solar Strategies A generous overhang shades the porch from summer sun, reducing solar heat gain. In winter, when the sun angle is lower, light and warmth reach the interior spaces. Material Efficiency On the North end of the lot, the deck is shaded by the home for the majority of the day. As a result, overhangs were eliminated to cut back on wasteful material use.

WEST HOLLYWOOD LIBRARY LOS ANGELES, CA
JOHNSON FAVARO
The West Hollywood Library is the first building built as part of a master plan for West Hollywood Park. At three floors and 48,000 GSF in size, the library establishes a relationship with both the city and the park. At the ground level, the library opens up to provide a pedestrian and vehicular entrance as well as a cafe and public meeting space. The first level opens up onto the park, while the upper floor frames views of West Hollywood and the park. Project Responsibilities: • Development of construction documents including coordination with engineers. • Primary focus was on the ground floor level, focusing on design and detailing of the city council chambers (see photo on bottom right), cafe, and connection through building to parking garage • 3d modeling of site revisions for park and entrance to library READING ROOM
