Senior Tiles Reflect our “uKnighted” Community Each spring, seniors create a ceramic tile that represents a personal statement about their identity, affiliations, and experience during their time at BB&N. Some are serious, others whimsical, some ironic. “I encourage students to think of something indicative of their time at BB&N—a subject they explored, a sport they had a passion for, or something they can relate to,” explains Upper School ceramics teacher Christian Tonsgard, who currently oversees the process. The creations vary widely in subject but there are some commonalities across generations. Throughout this year’s Report of Giving you will find selections of senior tiles from many eras, grouped by theme, and how the philanthropic support celebrated in this Report helps makes these experiences possible.

THANKS TO OUR “UKNIGHTED” COMMUNITY!

Dear BB&N Community, With a year now under my belt, people have been asking me if I’m enjoying my time here. My answer is an unequivocal, full-hearted “Yes!” I’m so grateful for the way the entire BB&N community has embraced my family and me, both as head of school and as a Class of 2023 parent. Thank you. It’s just another example of what makes this place so special! So many things have stood out about BB&N in my first year, but one aspect I have found especially remarkable is the way our entire community contributes so selflessly to this school and the students we serve. Philanthropic generosity, of course, is one way this happens each and every year. The 2018-2019 school year continued the BB&N community’s stellar track record with an incredible 1,950 donors providing $4.56 million in support for The BB&N Fund and other initiatives. Volunteerism is another big way that our community members are constantly improving our students’ experience. You’ll see callouts throughout this report that highlight some examples of parents, grandparents, and alumni/ae who have lent BB&N their time and talents to help advance our mission. Thank you so much for these efforts; we are by far a better school because of them. A third important way that community members invest themselves in the life of our school is by sharing their perspectives and feedback. I am a huge believer in the value of community-wide input in helping to shape important decisions about the school’s future. After all, each of us cares deeply about this school and the way it impacts the trajectories of our students’ and families’ lives. Last spring was a great illustration of this collaboration as more than 170 community members joined us to launch an in-depth strategic planning process. Regardless of what shape or shapes your support took last year, I want to thank you all for the incredible impact you have on the success of this school and our students, faculty, and staff. I look forward to continuing to communicate and collaborate with you throughout the year ahead and moving forward. Best,

Dr. Jennifer Price P’23 Head of School

The generosity of the BB&N community—alumni/ae, current and past parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends—can be measured in many ways; and is reflected in the experiences of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the breadth of academic programs and opportunities that, as noted in BB&N’s mission statement, “prepare students for lives of principled engagement in their communities and the world.”

CL A SS OF 2019 AND 2025 PARENTS R AISE MORE THAN $1 MILLION FOR FINANCIAL AID, F A C U L T Y, A N D S T U D E N T E N R I C H M E N T

For more than 30 years, the Senior Parents’ Gift program has provided an opportunity for parents of seniors to celebrate their children’s BB&N experiences through generous support for the School’s highest priorities. This year, senior parent donors contributed an extraordinary $1,020,231 to the Class of 2019 Financial Aid Fund, the Class of 2019 Faculty Support Fund, The BB&N Fund, and other capital initiatives, leaving a lasting legacy benefiting BB&N students and faculty of the future.

1.02m

$

Class of 2019 parents contributed more than $1 million through the 2019 Senior Parents’ Gift.

The Sixth Grade Gift program provides a similar opportunity for parents in this class to show their appreciation for their children’s time at the Lower School. Thanks to the generosity of Class of 2025 parents, $79,110 was raised through this year’s Sixth Grade Gift—the highest total since the program was launched more than ten years ago—with 97% of parents participating in this fundraising initiative. This year’s Sixth Grade Gift has fully endowed the Sixth Grade Endowment Fund for Student Enrichment Programs, originally established by the Class of 2013 Sixth Grade parents. The Fund will provide a permanent source of funding to enhance and enrich learning opportunities for Lower School students through supplemental programs in the arts, sciences, and other academic areas.

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

11

Academic excellence has been a hallmark of BB&N since its founding as Buckingham and Browne & Nichols. Each year, gifts to The BB&N Fund and income from general endowment funds support all areas of our academic program on all campuses. Above: Ellie Wade ’22.

12

The importance of Kindness (Comitas)—the third part of BB&N’s motto— can be seen in many senior tiles such as those depicted here. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are an integral part of the school’s past and present and an important strategic priority for the future. The Lower and Middle School Comitas Endowment Funds, established by BB&N parents 20 years ago, continue to provide crucial funding and support for student programs and faculty professional development related to these initiatives. Above: Annisa Enos ’31, Kindergarten teacher Maya Stiles-Royall ’04, and Shreya Swaroop ’31.

13

Since 1995, a highlight of the second grade science curriculum—and an experience shared by generations of Lower School students—is the Tree Study unit. Originally using the Cambridge Common as their laboratory, second graders now visit nearby Longfellow Park four times during the year. Working in pairs, students select, illustrate, photograph, and write about “their” tree during each season. The study helps students develop such skills as observation, research, measurement, collection and organization of data, as well as an appreciation of nature and their environment. GRADE 12/SENIOR PARENTS’ GIFT

Under the inspiring leadership of Senior Parents’ Gift Co-Chairs Negin and Oliver Ewald and Betsey and Charlie Gifford and a committee of dedicated parent volunteers, the Class of 2019 Senior Parents’ Gift raised a meaningful total of $1,020,231 to support BB&N’s endowment and annual giving priorities.

The 2019 Senior Parents’ Gift

included $330,993 to establish the Senior Parents’ Class of 2019 Financial Aid Fund and $239,068 to establish the Senior Parents’ Class of 2019 Faculty Support Fund. In addition, Class of 2019 Parents raised $220,420 for The BB&N Fund and $229,750 for other capital priorities.

We are particularly

appreciative that 83% of Senior Parents participated in this milestone fundraising program.

BB&N’s drama program has been a hallmark of the school since the days of Buckingham and Browne & Nichols. Opportunities for students include the annual sixth grade musical; a musical, plays, and improv troupe at the Middle School; and fall and spring plays and winter musical at the Upper School. Generous donors to The BB&N Fund, as well as the Patricia Ann Blevins ’44 Drama Fund, the Chow Family Theater Fund, and the Anna Minot Warren ’35 Theater Production Fund, provide support for these programs. Above: The annual Upper School winter musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying featured a large cast of student actors, set and costume designers, tech crew, and orchestra musicians. “ I volunteer for BB&N because the school has been such an important part of my life. I made lifelong friends and received a top-notch education. I believe that continuing to support the school today will enable future generations of students to have this amazing educational opportunity. Meeting Dr. Jen Price reinforced the importance of a BB&N education and how she is leading the school into the future by educating students both in and out of the classroom.” — Wendy Falchuk ’89 30th Reunion Committee Co-Chair, Former Trustee

“ I spent 14 years at BB&N learning to be accountable for my actions, to value education, to have empathy, to give back to those in need, and to understand the importance of great friendships. BB&N helped raise me, from age 4 to 18, and I wouldn’t be the same person I am today without it. I give back to the school and choose to stay involved so that other kids get a chance to have as amazing a childhood/young adulthood and education as I did.” — Eliza Appleton ’09 10th Reunion Committee Co-Chair, Alumni/ae Council Member,Young Alumni/ae Leadership Chair

BB&N students at all grade levels have the opportunity to express their creative and artistic passions through a variety of classes including painting, drawing, ceramics, woodworking, photography, film and video, 2D and 3D art, and architecture. Philanthropic support through The BB&N Fund, as well as restricted funds such as the Petropoulos Art Scholars Fund, help make these opportunities possible. “ To say my involvement as a parent volunteer at BB&N has been rewarding would be an understatement. It has served as the perfect medium in which to meet other parents and realize the unwavering commitment of the BB&N faculty and staff across campuses. My appreciation for art and its influence across various disciplines and cultures will be further enriched in my new role as co-Upper School Arts Liaison. But more than anything, I look forward to it as another great way to connect with students, parents, administrators, and the amazing faculty at the school.” — Gitika Desai P’22, ’24 Parents’ Association Middle School Parents’ Independent School Network (PIN) Representative

“ It has been my work with the Parents’ Association (PA) that really gave me the most insight and connection to BB&N. It gave me a chance to interact with wonderful parents from all three campuses and allowed me to understand the importance of the PA’s role in supporting the BB&N community. It was important to me that the Executive Committee reflect the diversity that is valued by the school. I was encouraged to share a perspective that can be overlooked if the PA is not represented by a diverse group.” — Phyllis Grant P’19 Parents’ Association Treasurer

“ Being able to reach back in support of future generations of leaders, a fantastic faculty and an amazingly supportive community has me excited for what lies in store for BB&N! As I’ve recently become a student once again at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University, it’s salient how well BB&N prepared me to succeed academically. I look forward to continuing to help perpetuate this impact in any way I can.” — Milyna Phillips ’99 Alumni/ae Council Member

Senior Tiles Depict our “uKnighted” Community Each spring, seniors create a ceramic tile that represents a personal statement about their identity, affiliations, or experience during their time at BB&N. Taken individually, each tile is an expression of a student’s adolescent identity; in totality, the mosaic of tiles represents something larger—the fabric of our “uKnighted” community.
