26th Anniversary Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Award BreakfastAlpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for AfricanAmericans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906, by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African-Americans. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world. The Jewel founders Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy and the early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.
Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were developed at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. Alpha stresses academic excellence among its members, and the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community's fight for civil rights through leaders such as: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Whitney Young, Edward Brooke, Andrew Young, Thurgood Marshall, Maynard Jackson, William Gray, Paul Robeson, NO Mayors Earnest & Marc Morial, Rev. Joseph Lowery, Rev. C. T. Vivian, Cornell West, Judge Greg Mathis, Judge Joe Brown, John H. Johnson, John Hope Franklin, Gene Upshaw, Tony Brown, Buffalo NY Mayor Byron Brown, Roland Burris, David Dinkins, Richard Arrington, Charles Rangel, Dick Gregory, Duke Ellington, Jesse Owens, Eddie Robinson, Fritz Pollard, Lionel Richie, Stuart Scott, Garrett A. Morgan, Willie Brown, Louis Sullivan, Winston Scott, MG Walter Gaskin (USMC), Donny Hathaway, Art Shell, Roland Martin, Hill Harper, Will Packard, Jeff Johnson, Rev. Dr. William Barber, Senator Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock, Maryland Governor Wes Moore and countless others who are leaders in their communities, or on university and college campuses.
The fraternity, which has been interracial since 1945, has always been open to males of any color, continues to pride itself on the quality and value of its members and on its commitment to the communities in which they serve. The fraternity has long been an organization able to take advantage of changes in times, changes in the political arena and changes in technology. The fraternity looks to the future with the same sense of excitement and purpose that has driven it since its founding 116 years ago
The fraternity expanded its legacy on 26 August 2011 with the dedication of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial on the mall in Washington, DC.
MS Shauntia A. Lewis, serves as the Deputy Director for the Augusta Georgia’s Housing and Community Development Department. She is a product of the Glynn County Schools System and a graduate of thee Fort Valley State University
Upon graduation, inspired by her membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., she returned home, committed to giving back to the community that had given so much to her, designing programs to enhance and enrich lives. Serving as a mentor of high-risk youth, teaching computer classes to the elderly, and creating community food drives and fairs.
Ms. Lewis, whose bloodline includes an endless procession of strong women, is the consummate professional. One of her major passions is seeing women, who she believes are not always appreciated for their outstanding contributions to society, break through the glass ceiling that prevents many of them from elevating to positions of power and places of change. She believes that regardless of whether the seat is at the baby changing table or the board room table, women should not be taken lightly society. As the mother of a 16-year-old son, Robert Aaron Wright, she practices that mantra shaping the way he perceives women and assisting him in understanding the respect they are due.
Well known in Glynn County as a doer and not just a talker, she has a varied list of accomplishments and board service. She served as President of the Brunswick Job Corps Center Community Interagency Council and as a member of the Brunswick Golden Isles Chamber, and Family Connections Governance Board. She is most proud of her being a Glynn County 20 Under 40 Nominee and 2012 graduation from Leadership Glynn.
The former Community Development Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity Glynn County and Community Relations Manager for Goodwill Industries in Brunswick continued her life of service upon her moving to Augusta in June of 2019, when she accepted the Deputy Director position. In her position she oversees a budget of over 20 million, supervises over 25 employees, while assisting in designing strategic plans and developing housing and non-housing revitalization and community services projects. Additional duties include the facilitation of partnerships with federal, state, and local for profit and nonprofit business, thereby creating new revenue streams
Ms. Lewis is focused on “creating positive change by promoting self-sufficiency through partnership in economic development, quality housing, and neighborhood reinvestment. One of her proudest achievements came in September 2022 when she served as the chair in charge of planning the National Community Development Association 2022 Region IV Conference. The first time ever that the conference has met in Augusta.
She is a member of the 2021 Leadership Augusta Class and the Greater Columbia County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Boar memberships include the American Heart Association CSRA Board Member, Wilson Family YMCA, Riverfront YMCA (2021 Champagne Chair), and Augusta Metro Chamber Women in Business Committee

It is said that our past is our heritage, and our history tells a glorious story of Alphas upward climb toward the light. In 1928, a group of Alpha Brothers, initiated through various college, university, and alumni chapters across the country, desirous of rekindling their fraternal spirits and looking to make a difference in the community, met at the Tastee Shoppe on 9th and Perry Avenue with the idea of organizing a Graduate Chapter. Out of that meeting, the Alpha Club was formed, with two objectives, one was to live up to the ideals of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the second, introduce themselves to metro Augusta by participating in activities, sponsoring programs and social events
In early 1935, under the leadership and visionary spirit of Alpha Club President
Lawrence D. Perry, a petition for a chapter in Augusta was submitted and approved by the General Office. The name assigned was Alpha Chi Lambda and then First (Southern Regional) Vice President Charles W. Greene of the Eta Lambda chapter was authorized to perform the ceremony for the second alumni chapter to be chartered in the state of Georgia.
On 27 April 1935, in the Haines Institute library, with much fanfare, pomp and circumstance, the anchor was lifted, the sails were unfurled, the colors were hoisted, and the SS Alpha Chi Lambda left the port on its maiden voyage on the sea of Alpha with the following passengers. A. Murray Carter, initiated through the Eta Lambda chapter, was the Ordinary Manager at Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company, was the first Treasurer
Reverend Augustus C. Griggs, initiated through the Alpha Omicron chapter, was the Secretary – Treasurer, Business Manager and Member of the Board of Trustees at Haines Institute; He was the Associate Editor of the Sphinx and Assistant Secretary
Dr. Harold E. Hill, initiated through the Chi chapter, was a graduate of Meharry Medical College and the city’s only registered Pharmacist, served as the first Chapter President.
Solomon M. Jenkins, initiated through the Omicron Lambda chapter, was the Augusta Branch Manager at Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company, served as the chapter’s first Vice President
Dr. Robert L. Lockett, initiated through the Nu chapter, a prominent Dentist in the City.
Lawrence D. Perry, initiated through the Eta Lambda, who at that time was traveling auditor for Atlanta Life Insurance Company who would later become the Augusta Branch Manager
Professor John M. Tutt, initiated through the Alpha Omicron chapter, was a Mathematics Professor and the head of the Physical Education department and secretary of the Board of trustees at Haines Institute, served as the first chapter Secretary
Dr. Robert W. White, initiated through the Chi chapter at Meharry Medical College, was a prominent Dentist and served as the first chapter Sergeant of Arms
Rev. William D. Woods, initiated through the Nu chapter, the pastor of the Washington Georgia Presbyterian church and Principal of the Washington Georgia high school, served as the first chapter Chaplain
Eugene Y. Lowe, initiated through the Alpha Rho chapter, though he participated in the chartering ceremony he did not sign the charter as a chartering member.
After the ceremony the Brothers retired to the Private Dining Hall of the Haines Institute to render a stag in honor Brother Greene and celebrate the culmination of their seven-year journey. The grand and glorious affair paid tribute to their noteworthy achievement, celebrated Brotherhood, and confirmed their unselfish devotion to the ideals and principles of the fraternity.
In 1997, Brother Bert T. Thomas motioned that the chapter commemorate the birthday of Brother Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by sponsoring a breakfast on the morning of the holiday. Chapter President Brother George L. Bailey named Brother Johnny J. Holmes the chair of the committee charged with planning the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Award Breakfast. The first Breakfast was held at the then Sheraton Augusta hotel with Brother Judge John H. Ruffin, Jr. as the keynote speaker, and the first Unity Award was given to Augustans Together in honor of Brother Phil H. Waring.
In January of 2002 the breakfast was moved from the Sheraton to the Radisson Riverfront, now known as the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center. Then Medical College of Georgia President Dr. Daniel Rahn was the keynote speaker and the Greater Augusta Arts Council won the second of its two Unity Awards. Brother Holmes relinquished the chairmanship of the committee in 2003, in 2004, Chapter President Brother Augustus C. Thurmond named Brother Ellis B. Albright, who was the Immediate Past Chapter President, as chairman. The 2004 keynote speaker was Georgia State Supreme Court Judge Brother Robert H. Benham and the Unity Award was awarded to the Richmond County Board of Education. Following the induction of Brother Commissioner Lee Norris Beard into the Omega chapter, Brother Albright suggested that an award be given in his honor to recognize organizations or individuals in the CSRA who exemplified his leadership, and humanistic traits. The first Brother Lee Norris Beard Humanitarian award recipient was his friend James “JR” Riles.
Over the years many corporations and individuals have supported our efforts, since 1998, such as Dr. Varnell Gaines, Broadway Baptist Church, Minnesota Fattz and Cher Best. Others who have continuously supported our efforts have been Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Delta Sigma Thea Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Southern Nuclear at Plant Vogtle, Georgia Power, SRP Federal Credit Union, Eddie Bussey State Farm Insurance Agency, CSRA Business League, Starbucks, Manny’s Service Center, the late Tom Wiedmeier, Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood Engineering (GMC), the CSRA EOA, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Jenkins Memorial C.M.E. Church to name a few..
In 2016 upon the entrance into the Omega Chapter of Brother Bert T. Thomas, Brother Albright moved and the chapter approved that the Unity Award become the Bert T. Thomas Unity Award. The first Bert T. Thomas Unity Award was presented to the newly elected Mayor of Augusta - Richmond County, Rev. Dr. Hardie Davis, Jr.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Award Breakfast is a success because of the continuous support and attendance of those in the community who have been in attendance since 1998, and for that we are truly grateful and appreciative.
