Lessons from the Governor Dominic A. Santore & Alexander Ellison

Reporters

An arena filled with the cheered and chanted bravado of over 1,200 Buckeye Boys State delegates greeted Ohio Governor John Kasich, as he entered the arena. Deciding not to do the cliché of talking on stage, the Governor went the route of a more intimate proceeding. He ditched the stage for the ground floor, walking in front and to the sides of the band. Though his procedure was not cliché, his topic was, but not in a bad way. Governor Kasich talked of the drug epidemic inflicting Ohio at this time. “There are many challenges that come way…Be aware of drugs,” Governor Kasich said. He compared doing drugs to drunk driving; as Kasich discussed how that was a problem in his upbringing as drug use is to us. Additionally, he promoted following dreams and cutting the people who discourage others from pursuing those aspirations. Ohio’s Governor would go on to say: “How do you achieve goals? You gotta work hard. There is no free lunch.” He followed that up with: “If you work, if you study, if you are polite, if you have manners, if you struggle, and if you are persistent, you can be whatever you want to be.” After his speech came the

Monday, June 12, 2017 questions. The Hetuck staff asked eight questions ranging from his childhood experiences to health care. There were originally twelve questions set to be asked, and the governor tried his best to get them all in, but only eight questions ended up being answered. But this was understandable as Governor Kasich needed to go off to Buckeye Girls State, where he should be anxiously awaited. As Kasich progressed within his speeches and messages, a sense of respect was earned, and with it, pride that can be seen from all of the Boys State Citizens. Kasich came to Boys State to address the importance of integrity, a key quality in the constitution of a good man. He said that integrity is about doing the right thing, regardless of who is watching. He understands teenagers views of success. Governor Kasich states,

“There are many challenges along the way.” He knows what it takes to not only meet, but exceed beyond expectations. As previously known, Boys Staters can be dubbed as “the cream of the cream of the crop.” As such, being in the presence of such a high state government official very much enhances the experience for all Boys Staters. Governor Kasich also referenced his twin daughters, both of whom are seventeen years old and planning to attend college. From this given statement, Governor Kasich revealed that he understands the core values of a hardworking student, one who achieves for academic success, both for a current academic record and postsecondary education. As Governor Kasich states, “When you listen, you can help, and when you help, you can change the world.”

Federalist Party Platform Economy- Adopted The Federalists Party wants to keep the government out of the pockets of the citizens and encourage competition and growth. Education- Adopted The Federalist Party wants school districts to create their own finals but the content must be state approved. Teachers will not be evaluated on the basis of student performance but on the basis of student improvement over one school year. Also, prisons should be required to provide a GED style schooling program. Schools should be required to provide classes based on everyday living and adult skills, including career-based credit and internships. Energy/Environment- Adopted The Federalist Party’s goal is to transition to renewable sources of energy in the foreseeable future, while maintaining a balance of those working in coal and oil. We will work to increase the number of clean parks and reintegrate organizations such as Conservation League, and to create incentives that encourage businesses to use more renewable sources of energy.

Drugs- Adopted Federalist Party Supports legalization and taxation of marijuana in order to fund public services, including rehabilitation and education centers for drug addicts. Also, the Federalist Party supports further regulation of pharmaceutical opiate distribution.

Social Policy- Adopted To provide support to veterans following their terms of service, and to assist them with reintegration into society. To keep prisons and other detention centers publicly owned, and to provide assistance with rehabilitation following discharge and release. Setting the bar… exam Garrett Reese

Reporter

In order to hold any office regarding the interpretation of the law, one must first pass the bar exam. Unless someone has taken it for themselves, it is tough to judge if a 44/50 minimum passing score has set the bar too high for only a 60 minute test. So some investigating on the matter was done by interviewing delegates following their test. Overwhelmingly, the feedback of the test takers supported this statement by Cummins. This is largely due to the fact that the first test is entirely multiple choice while half of the second test is true and false questions. This set up resulted in a pass/fail rate of just 1:5 for first time takers and then rose to 3:1 for second timers. Of the sample size collected, the delegates who did not pass the second time did not plan on taking it a third time. Overall, there was little correlation between the amount of time spent studying to passing rate. In total, just over 30 minutes on average was spent studying before the first test. Before the second test most of the delegates interviewed spent just a few minutes looking their materials over. “I spent about five minutes studying before the first test,” said Eli Cless who missed passing the

first test by just one point. Knowing where to find answers in the book was crucial for test takers as none reported that they knew more than half of the answers based on prior knowledge alone. But this did not necessarily mean the test of overly challenging.

“The answers were a little lengthy,” said Jack Lambert in regards to challenges of the test. The responses on what was challenging about the test often varied. Some said that having to flip through the book frequently was a challenge, while others specifically claimed it was simple. The same can be said about the wording of the questions. One consensus response that remained steady was that a decent amount of answers had to be inferred rather than being word for word. The most important thing learned was that no matter how many attempts it took for Most test takers claimed someone to pass the test, they that the questions were of mod- will have the necessary erate difficulty with the first be- knowledge to hold a law position. ing harder than the second due to the amount of answer choices.

“The second

test was definitely easier than the first” -Hayden Cummins
