INTRODUCTION When I was younger, my mother always told me to challenge myself. I took harder classes, I joined organizations and sports teams, I intentionally made life hard and consistently overloaded my schedule. This seems to have had a sort of positive impact on my life as it has led to a certain kind of personal mantra. The experiences that I subjected myself to growing up have taught me that if you are not progressing then you are regressing. The world is constantly moving and if you are not moving with it or ahead of it then you are already behind. I hope that the projects presented here reflect a sort of illogical path between thoughts. I considered each project a new experience and thus experimented with new ideas and systems in each. I hope that you can see a certain level of uncomfort as each project attempted to teach me something on its own and resolution came with struggle and trial. I believe that we should all be faced with trial in order to learn the most and to learn the most of ourselves. I hope you enjoy.

MULTIPURPOSE THEATRE PROJECT BRIEF:: A multipurpose theatre containing three different stage and house configurations, one being an experimental vertical stage, was designed for an expanse of space between downtown and midtown Atlanta. The design attempts to stitch these two areas together through programmatic interjection into the site. The desire was to use the creative arts of multiple theatre types to be a draw to an otherwise void in the city. PROJECT LOCATION:: DOWNTOWN ATLANTA, GEORGIA

SEMI-TRANSPARENT REFLEXIVE SKIN STUDY- FORMED OUT OF SILICON

DESIGN DESCRIPTION:: The design for a multipurpose theatre in Atlanta went through various phases. It began with the conception of “stuffing a program into a shell and eventually married that idea to a program organizing operation. A series of final diagrams were abstracted from a transformative model that certain pragmatic criteria were applied. The idea being that a program overlap occurs and within this overlap hybrid program and circulation are applied. The models on the previous pages explore the initial formal concept that was abandoned early in the design. The study models to the left show a two dimensional application of the diagrammatic model. The models below begin to express the three dimensional space forming spacial possibilities the design could attain.

CONEY ISLAND AMUSEMENT PROJECT BRIEF:: In the early eighteen hundreds Coney Island was a get away for local Manhattan residents. It was a serene and natural place. By eighteen forty a boardwalk had been built and with it various hotels and amusements. These amusements, with other urbanizing factors, led to the island’s current unnatural and commercialized state. Architectural interventions within Coney Island theme park utilize the natural/ commercial imbalance by proposing the reuse and reinterpretation of naturally occurring elements as the amusement. INTERVENTION:: GARDEN, SPRING

DESIGN DESCRIPTION:: A series of horizontal layers are proposed as the design strategy- each relating to a pre-existing contextual element. The first layer, at existing ground level, is an intervention of new vegetation derivative of naturally occurring species. This introduction of dense vegetation will shroud the path from adjacent amusements and create a seasonally changing environment. The second layer, a raised “boardwalk meanders through the adjacent amusements and the new vegetation allowing each to be a spectacle along the visitors trip. A canopy, designed to increase the focus on the sky by framing, is introduced and brings the sky to a level just over head. Lastly, a series of viewing apparatus are inserted along lengths of the path in order to frame the existing content and allow a visitor to see a juxtaposition of the new insertion against the existing context.

THE FINAL STUDY MODEL ILLUSTRATES THE NOTION OF BRINGING THE SKY TO THE VISITOR LEVEL. THE ABSTRACTED PATH IS SEEN WITHOUT THE HINDRANCE OF THE EXISTING SITE IN THE MODEL IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE IMPRESSION OF A MEANDERING PATH.

SEMI-TRANSPARENT REFLEXIVE SKIN STUDY- FORMED OUT OF SILICON

HIGH RISE PROJECT BRIEF:: A mixed use building containing residential, commercial, and retail situated in the fast growing Midtown district of Atlanta. The design reflects no interest in the all too cliche of a large glass monolith. Instead, through a formal dialogue, the design creates a kinetic relationship with the street and the occupants of the building. PROJECT LOCATION:: MIDTOWN ATLANTA, GEORGIA

A SERIES OF MAPPING EXERCISES WERE CREATED WITH A SUBJECT PASSING THROUGH A DEFINED SPACE. THE RESULT LED TO THE APPROXIMATION OF MOVEMENT ON AND BESIDE THE EXISTING SITE.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION:: The design began with a series of mapping studies of a stagnant space and the influence a body may have upon it. These mappings were considered freeze frame moments of movement along the sites edges. The information was then modelled in multiple architecturally inspired formal variations. Once exhausted formally, pragmatic criteria were interjected into further variations to account for the realization of the forms as programmed space. The skin was developed simultaneously as a constantly changing/adaptive element that would give a continuous physical dialogue between the inhabitants of the building and those pedestrians along the street edges.

TYPICAL COMPETITION SWIM SCENARIO TO ATYPICAL SCENARIO: THE SPECTATORS OF THE EVENT NORMALLY VIEW THE ACTION OF THE SWIMMER FROM ABOVE THE WATER. THIS IS A WEAK VANTAGE POINT AS THE REAL ACTION IS SEEN FROM BELOW THE WATER.

TYPICAL DIVING SCENARIO TO ATYPICAL SCENARIO: THE SPECTATORS OF THE DIVE EVENT ARE SITUATED SUCH THAT THE VANTAGE POINT ALLOWS THEM PERPENDICULAR VIEWS TO THE DIVER. ALL ACTION OF DIVE IS WITNESSED.

NATATORIUM PROJECT BRIEF:: The program brief for an ACSA steel competition in an undisclosed location stated the need for a natatorium. The primary structure would be steel with long spans. The program called for three pools of different character as well as a concession area and supporting spaces. PROJECT LOCATION:: FICTIONAL

PROCESS MODELS TO FINAL MODEL

DESIGN DESCRIPTION:: The design of the natatorium began with the recognition of the action of a swimmer. In a typical competition spectators view the pool and swimmer from above in stadium style seating. While efficient, the layout does not allow the spectator to view the action the swimmer makes but rather splashes of water and heads. The intention of the design was to invert the swimmer/spectator seating relationship and encourage the awareness of the movements required of swimming. The first response was to stack the program in order to place the spectator closer to the action. Since the design was a steel competition, the primary structure was a series of stacked steel frames that acted in unison as a truss. The program specified the requirements for the frames thus placing individual programmes into specified areas. The skin was conceived as a series of horizontal corten steel panels left natural and untreated. Over time, the building would allow visitors to see its age and witness the weathering of natural steel while also witnessing the structural capacities of the material.

A PROCESS OF VISUAL RESEARCH WAS EMPLOYED IN ORDER TO GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF POSSIBLE SIGHT PLANNING AND FORMAL STRATEGIES.

COSTA RICA PROJECT BRIEF:: A client came to Plexus R+D to design a mixed use complex in Costa Rica. The program included office condos, retail and restaurants, a hotel, and a casino. The team at Plexus worked collaboratively on designing a series of buildings to successfully meet the clients demands. We began with context and image research which resulted in a strategy reflective of naturally occurring moments around the site. The office buildings are abstracted edges of an operation performed on the ground plane. The extrusion of earth reveals the layering that occurs below ground now seen in the floor plates. The implied green space in the center of the site is an attempt to bring the natural rainforest into the site for every day activity and enjoyment. I was involved in the office condo design, as well as taking the detail and drawing information into design development.
