MISSION STATEMENT

The Social & Behavioral Sciences and Human Services Pathway is committed to transforming and empowering students’ lives.

We are dedicated to understanding human behavior from a cultural, historical, individual, physical, political, and social context, and to the application of this knowledge.

The Pathway promotes intellectual scholarship, encourages civic engagement that improves our local and global communities, and inspires meaningful career goals that benefit society.

DEAR SBSHS COMMUNITY,

The Social & Behavioral Sciences and Human Services (SBSHS) Pathway would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of our Pathway Community. I applaud you for your dedication, hard work, and professionalism. Our students’ lives have been enriched and transformed significantly through the efforts of the faculty, staff, students, and administrators who participated in planning, delivering, and executing numerous College-wide activities.

The SBSHS Pathway Community has seen significant changes since COVID-19. Nevertheless, we met each institutional challenge as an opportunity to learn more about the depth and breadth of our pathway, as well as to grow stronger as a community.

In the coming year, we hope to build on our accomplishments and to continue focusing on more opportunities for faculty development and student engagement. These endeavors will deepen our commitment to student success and broaden our Pathway’s scope.

Let’s take a moment to reflect and review this year’s highlights and accomplishments. This report contains some key successes and milestones that we have reached.

5K WALK FOR AWARENESS

On January 27, 2024, SBSHS hosted their Second Annual 5K Walk for Human Trafficking Awareness. Human trafficking affects individuals across various socioeconomic backgrounds, including college students facing financial hardship. In addition to raising awareness, the annual walk helps provide economic stability to students through the Social Behavioral

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE SYMPOSIUM

SBSHS North Campus collaborated with Walking One Stop for the annual Environmental Justice Fair and Symposium on February of this year. The event focused on crime prevention and community well-being through environmental design, offering students a chance to deepen their engagement with local environmental organizations, law enforcement and gain insight into their efforts within the South Florida community.

OF BROWARD COLLEGE STUDENTS PASSED THE FCLE ON THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT

This year, our Pathway offered boot camp, tutoring, and resources to students across the college who were preparing to take the Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE).

In an ongoing partnership between the SBSHS Pathway, the Academic Success Center (ASC) and the Testing and Assessment Center, we are proud to report that Broward College surpassed all other institutions in the State of Florida with the highest passing rate of students taking the exam.

Because of this partnership, Broward College students who took the exam passed on their first attempt.
